Is installusb9x.exe safe or a virus?

Inspect the publisher and signature
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists.
- Select a signature and choose Details. Check the signer name, whether Windows says the signature is valid, and the timestamp information.
- Record the signer and validity result before changing or deleting the file.
A valid signature from an expected vendor is useful evidence, not a guarantee that the surrounding package is desirable. An absent signature is a warning, not proof of malware; very old installers may not carry a signature that modern Windows recognizes.
Scan before running it
Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, then open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and run a Full scan. If suspicious software remains, or if the file repeatedly returns after removal, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Do not bypass SmartScreen, User Account Control or an antivirus warning merely to make the installer run. Microsoft’s baseline is to download apps only from trusted sources and to keep antivirus protection updated. Unknown software carries higher risk until its reputation and behavior have been checked.
Why installusb9x.exe errors happen

A power loss, forced restart, interrupted uninstall or failed update can leave the installer and its registry entries out of sync. Windows may then call a file that was removed or leave a shortcut pointing to an old directory.
Wrong package for the device or Windows edition
LG phone, modem and accessory packages are not interchangeable. A 32-bit-era component may be present in a package that was never designed for a 64-bit installation, a particular phone model or your current Windows release.
File moved, quarantined or overwritten
Security software, cleanup utilities and manual file moves can remove one component while leaving the parent installer configured to launch it. A second program can also place an unrelated executable with the same name in a different folder.

Permissions, blocking and compatibility
Running an old installer from a protected directory, a network share or a downloaded archive can trigger permission, reputation or compatibility blocks. Running as administrator may solve a permissions problem, but it cannot make an incompatible or untrusted binary safe.

The visible error may be a symptom of the device installation rather than a defect in this tiny executable. Device Manager can show a driver-signing problem or status code 10 (the device cannot start) or 28 (drivers are not installed).
Information to collect before changing anything
Write down the evidence while the error is visible. This prevents a reinstall from erasing the clues needed to identify the failing step.
- The exact error text, including any code or referenced DLL.
- The full path shown for
installusb9x.exe. - Your Windows edition, version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The LG phone, modem or accessory model and how it is connected.
- The LG driver package name and version, if listed in Installed apps or the original installer.

Complete manual repair procedure
1. Stop launching the questionable copy
If the executable is in a download, temporary or unknown folder, do not double-click it. Disconnect the LG device if repeated installer prompts are appearing, and preserve the file long enough to record its path and scan it. If Windows Security has already quarantined it, do not restore it just to test whether the error disappears.
2. Identify the parent LG package
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Windows 10 and search for LG United Mobile Driver or another LG USB/mobile driver entry. On older interfaces, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Note the exact product and version. If no LG entry exists, inspect the installer archive, desktop shortcut or Device Manager driver details to find which package installed the device.

3. Run security checks
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates.
- Return to Scan options and run Full scan.
- If the file is in an unexpected location, detection recurs, or unwanted software remains active, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan and save open work before the restart.
- Review Protection history after the scan. Quarantine is reversible; permanent deletion is not.
Do not install a second antivirus solely because this filename is unfamiliar, and do not disable protection to force an old installer through.
4. Uninstall the damaged parent package
- Close LG utilities and disconnect the phone or accessory.
- In Installed apps or Programs and Features, select the LG driver package and choose Uninstall.
- Use the package’s official uninstaller when Windows offers one. Do not delete random files from
Program Filesfirst; that can leave registry entries and services behind. - If the uninstaller reports that a file is missing, continue only if Windows offers a removal option. Record the message and proceed to the restart rather than downloading a replacement EXE.
5. Remove the device entry if it remains
Open Device Manager, expand the relevant categories such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, Portable Devices, Modems or Other devices, and identify the LG hardware. Right-click it and choose Uninstall device. Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device only when you are certain the entry belongs to the broken LG package; removing a shared driver can affect other hardware. If you cannot identify the device, leave it in place and document its name and status code.
6. Restart Windows
Restart normally after uninstalling. A restart releases files held by installer services, reloads USB enumeration and gives Windows a clean state for the replacement package. Do not reconnect the device until the desktop has loaded unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require it.
7. Obtain the correct driver from a trusted source
Use LG’s support channel or the device manufacturer’s official support page, selecting the exact model and your Windows edition. Prefer a complete signed driver package over a standalone installusb9x.exe download. Compare the package’s stated Windows compatibility, architecture and release date with your system. If the manufacturer no longer provides a current package, use the driver already supplied with the device only when its provenance is clear, and understand that an old package may not support current Windows builds.
Never use a “DLL fixer,” “EXE repair” or random mirror to replace this one file. A replacement can be tampered with, mismatched to the rest of the package or bundled with unwanted software.

8. Install in a controlled order
- Temporarily disconnect the LG device unless the official instructions say it must be attached during setup.
- Right-click the official installer and select Properties to inspect its publisher and signature before running it.
- Run the installer with a standard administrator approval when Windows requests it; do not disable SmartScreen or antivirus protection.
- Accept only the components required for your model. If the installer offers a compatibility option, use it only when the manufacturer documents that option for your Windows release.
- Restart when prompted, then connect the device directly to a reliable USB port rather than through an unpowered hub.
9. Check Device Manager after installation
In Device Manager, confirm that the LG device appears without a yellow warning icon. Open Properties > General and read the status. Code 10 means the device cannot start; code 28 means drivers are not installed. Under Driver, compare the provider, date and version with the package you installed. Under Details > Hardware Ids, record the identifiers if you need to match the device to a support package. Do not force a driver intended for a different model merely because it has a newer date.
10. Investigate persistent failures in Windows logs
Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and filter around the time of the installation for device-installation or service errors. Windows also records Plug and Play installation details in SetupAPI logs, commonly under C:WindowsINFsetupapi.dev.log and C:WindowsINFsetupapi.app.log. Search the logs for the device’s hardware ID, the LG package name or the failing file. Preserve the relevant lines before trying another uninstall.

Can you delete installusb9x.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the name is unfamiliar. If it is inside the active LG driver directory, manual deletion can break the package and leave Windows attempting to launch a missing component. Uninstall the parent driver first, restart, scan, and then inspect leftovers.
If a scanned copy is in a temporary or download folder, no trusted installer needs it, and the parent package has already been removed, quarantine it first. After you are satisfied that no legitimate installation depends on it, delete the quarantined item and empty the recycle bin. Keep the path, scan result and detection history if you may need to report the file or diagnose a recurring download.
How to reinstall an LG USB driver safely
- Identify the exact LG device model and Windows edition.
- Remove the existing LG driver package through Installed apps or its official uninstaller.
- Restart Windows and run a Defender scan.
- Download the complete driver installer from LG or the device manufacturer’s official support channel, not a standalone executable site.
- Check the package publisher and digital signature before installation.
- Install with the device disconnected unless the instructions require connection.
- Restart, connect the device directly, and verify it in Device Manager.
- If Windows reports code 10 or 28, capture the hardware ID, driver provider/version and SetupAPI entries before trying another package.
Legacy LG packages may not have a supported build for every current Windows release. If the official support page does not list your Windows version, do not assume that a 9x component will solve the problem. Ask the device manufacturer for a supported package or compatibility guidance, and consider whether the hardware itself is still recognized by a modern system.
When to escalate the problem
Seek help from LG or the device manufacturer when the official package fails on a clean restart, the device is not detected on multiple known-good USB ports, or SetupAPI reports signing, catalog or hardware-ID failures. Include the exact error, full path, Windows edition, device model, package version, signature result, Defender result, Device Manager status and the relevant log lines. This evidence is more useful than reporting only that “installusb9x.exe is broken.”
