INS Mangrol (P82) is the Indian Navy’s third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC). Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi, the vessel is intended to find and counter submarines and other underwater threats in coastal waters, while also supporting low-intensity maritime operations, underwater surveillance and mine warfare.
The ship was delivered to the Navy on 21 August 2026 and commissioned at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on 12 October 2026. More than 80 percent of its content is indigenous, according to the Ministry of Defence. Its name revives that of an earlier Indian naval ship, the minesweeper INS Mangrol (M85), which served until 2004.

INS Mangrol at a glance
INS Mangrol is a purpose-built coastal warfare vessel rather than a large ocean-going frigate or destroyer. The “P82” pennant identifies the current ship, while “Mahe class” identifies the design family. ASW-SWC means Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft: a compact warship optimized for detecting, tracking and attacking submarines in relatively restricted waters such as approaches to ports, harbours and the near-coastal zone.

Construction and commissioning timeline
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1983 | Earlier INS Mangrol (M85) commissioned | The former vessel was a Mahé-class minesweeper, not an ASW-SWC. |
| 7 April 2004 | M85 decommissioned at Kochi | The original ship left Indian Navy service after about 21 years. |
| 21 August 2026 | Current Mangrol delivered by CSL | Shipbuilder handover to the Indian Navy was completed. |
| 12 October 2026 | P82 commissioned at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai | The third Mahe-class ASW-SWC formally entered service. |
Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, presided over the October 2026 commissioning. Delivery and commissioning are separate milestones: delivery transfers the completed vessel to the Navy after shipyard work and acceptance activities, while commissioning marks its formal entry into naval service.
What missions does INS Mangrol perform?
Anti-submarine warfare in coastal waters
The principal mission is coastal anti-submarine warfare. A submarine operating near an Indian port, harbour or shipping route can exploit shallow water, background noise and complex seabed conditions to remain difficult to detect. An ASW-SWC patrols these approaches with sonar and other sensors, builds a picture of underwater contacts and can engage a hostile submarine if authorized.
Because the craft is designed for shallow-water work, its value is complementary to that of larger ASW frigates, maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters. It can remain close to the coast for routine patrols and respond to contacts in areas where a deep-draft warship may be less convenient to operate.
Underwater surveillance
Underwater surveillance covers more than searching for enemy submarines. It can include monitoring approaches to naval bases, anchorages, energy facilities and other sensitive maritime infrastructure. Persistent local patrols help establish what normal underwater activity looks like, making unusual contacts easier to identify and investigate.

Low-Intensity Maritime Operations
The Navy lists Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) among Mangrol’s tasks. LIMO generally describes maritime security activities below the threshold of conventional fleet combat. A craft in this role may support coastal security, presence patrols, protection of vital areas and responses to limited or irregular threats. The vessel’s sensors and weapons give commanders options without committing a much larger surface combatant.
Mine warfare
Mangrol also has mine-warfare capability. Naval mines can deny access to a harbour or channel and may be difficult to locate because they sit underwater and can remain dormant. A vessel able to operate in coastal waters and use its sensors for mine-related tasks can contribute to keeping approaches open and reducing risks to naval and commercial traffic.
How the vessel’s propulsion, sensors and weapons fit together
Water-jet propulsion
Mangrol uses water-jet propulsion. Instead of relying solely on an exposed propeller, a water-jet system draws in water and expels it at high velocity to produce thrust. This arrangement is well suited to a shallow-water craft because it reduces the vulnerability associated with a deeply projecting propeller and can provide responsive handling in confined waters. The available public information does not establish the ship’s maximum speed, endurance, engine model or fuel capacity, so those figures should not be inferred.
Sonars and radars
Sonars are central to the underwater mission. They transmit and receive sound in water or passively listen for acoustic signatures, allowing the crew to detect, classify and track contacts. In shallow water, operators must account for reflections from the seabed and surface, temperature layers, currents and heavy commercial traffic. The official descriptions confirm advanced sonars but do not identify their exact models, frequency bands, detection ranges or processing systems.

Advanced radars support the surface and navigation picture. Radar can track ships, boats and other objects above the water, help maintain situational awareness around a harbour and cue the crew to contacts that require closer investigation. Public releases do not provide a radar model, instrumented range or number of antenna arrays.
Torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets
The craft carries torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets. Torpedoes are self-propelled underwater weapons designed to home on a submarine or follow a programmed search pattern. Anti-submarine rockets deliver explosive charges into the water at a chosen distance, giving the ship another way to attack a submerged contact. The Navy’s releases do not state the weapon manufacturers, launchers, warhead sizes, inventory or engagement ranges, so those specifications remain unconfirmed in the public account.
INS Mangrol specifications
The following dimensions come from a 2026 report by The Indian Express, not from the Ministry of Defence’s commissioning and delivery releases. They should therefore be treated as approximate published secondary specifications.
| Specification | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Approximately 78 metres | Reported by The Indian Express in 2026. |
| Beam | Approximately 11.36 metres | Reported by The Indian Express in 2026. |
| Displacement | Approximately 896–1,100 tonnes | A range reported by The Indian Express; the public sources do not explain the loading condition behind the range. |
| Propulsion | Water jets | Confirmed in the Navy’s equipment description; engine and speed data are not stated. |
| Primary sensors | Advanced radars and sonars | Confirmed in official descriptions; models and performance figures are not stated. |
| Weapons identified publicly | Torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets | Officially listed; quantities and detailed weapon specifications are not stated. |
| Indigenous content | More than 80 percent | Ministry of Defence figure for the ship commissioned in 2026. |
Why the indigenous-content figure matters
The Ministry of Defence says Mangrol contains more than 80 percent indigenous content. That figure covers the ship’s Indian contribution across design, construction and systems integration, rather than meaning that every individual component is necessarily manufactured in India. The ministry describes the vessel as evidence of growing Indian capability in warship design, construction and the integration of complex naval systems.

For the Navy, a high domestic share can improve control over maintenance, upgrades and spares. It can also make it easier to build additional hulls to a common design and to adapt equipment for Indian coastal conditions. The percentage is a programme-level headline, not a substitute for a component-by-component breakdown; public releases do not provide such a breakdown for P82.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The origin of the Mangrol name
The current ship is named after Mangrol, a coastal town and minor port in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. Mangrol is known as a prominent fishing harbour, making the name especially appropriate for a vessel whose work is tied to India’s coastal approaches and maritime communities.
The Navy deliberately carries forward the name of the earlier INS Mangrol, whose pennant was M85. Reusing a ship name links the new craft to Indian naval history while assigning the name to a completely different operational design.

The former INS Mangrol was a Mahé-class minesweeper commissioned in 1983. It served for about 21 years and was decommissioned at Kochi on 7 April 2004. Its job was mine countermeasures: locating and dealing with mines that could threaten ships and restrict harbour or channel access.
Best Value
M85 and P82 should not be treated as the same type of vessel. The predecessor was a dedicated minesweeper, while the current ship is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft with a broader coastal-security mission that includes, but is not limited to, mine warfare.

How Mangrol fits into India’s coastal defence
Coastal defence depends on layers rather than one ship doing everything. Fixed surveillance, patrol craft, larger surface combatants, aircraft, helicopters and shore-based command networks each cover different distances and threats. Mangrol fills the compact warship layer: it can patrol near the coast, investigate underwater contacts and bring ASW weapons to an area without using a major fleet unit for every task.
Its shallow-water specialization is important because coastal seas are acoustically and geographically complicated. A submarine may exploit islands, seabed contours, fishing activity and merchant traffic. A craft designed to work in that environment can collect local sensor data and maintain a regular presence around the places the Navy most needs to protect.

Publicly confirmed facts include the ship’s P82 pennant, Mahe-class ASW-SWC designation, CSL construction, delivery and commissioning dates, mission set, water-jet propulsion, listed sensor and weapon categories, and more-than-80-percent indigenous content. Approximate dimensions and displacement are available through secondary reporting.
The public releases do not establish the crew size, exact sonar and radar models, combat-management system, engine output, top speed, operating range, endurance, detailed armour or the number of torpedoes and rockets carried. Those omissions are normal for a newly commissioned combatant and mean that precise performance claims should be treated cautiously unless the Navy or builder publishes them.
