Indirect prompt injection is an attack in which instructions come from content an AI system retrieves—such as a web page, email, PDF, or indexed company document—instead of from the person using the system. In AI search, that content is placed in the model’s context alongside trusted instructions. The model may then mistake attacker-controlled text for a command, changing its answer, revealing data available to it, or taking an unintended action through connected tools.
The central issue is a broken trust boundary: search systems must read external material, but they must not automatically trust that material. The damage depends less on the wording of the injected text than on what the AI can access and do.

Indirect prompt injection, explained
NIST defines indirect prompt injection as “A type of prompt injection executed through resource control rather than through user-provided input as in a direct prompt injection.” The distinction is where the hostile instruction enters.

| Type | Where the instruction comes from | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| Direct prompt injection | The user’s message or another input deliberately supplied to the model | A user tells a chatbot to ignore its system rules and reveal its hidden instructions |
| Indirect prompt injection | A resource the system reads or retrieves | A web page includes text telling an AI search assistant to disregard the user’s question |
Indirect attacks can be visible, hidden in formatting, embedded in metadata, placed in an image or document, or written in a way that looks like ordinary page content. The model does not inherently know that a paragraph came from an untrusted source. If the application places it in the same context window as system instructions, the model may treat it as relevant guidance.

OpenAI describes prompt injection as “a type of social engineering attack specific to conversational AI.” In this case, the attacker is socially engineering the model through material it was asked to read, not necessarily communicating with the end user.
Why AI search creates an ingestion path
Traditional search generally returns links or snippets for a person to inspect. AI search systems increasingly browse pages, summarize results, answer questions from retrieved passages, and combine private documents with public sources. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems follow a similar pattern: they fetch relevant chunks from an index and put those chunks into a model prompt.
That workflow creates several places where untrusted instructions can enter:
- A crawler indexes a page controlled or modified by an attacker.
- A browser tool fetches a page while answering a user’s question.
- An email, office document, support ticket, or PDF contains hostile text.
- An external connector automatically synchronizes poisoned material into a company index.
- An attacker manipulates a document before it is split, embedded, and stored for later retrieval.
- Retrieved tool output is passed to a planning model without a clear untrusted-content boundary.
Relevance does not make a source trustworthy. A malicious page can be highly relevant to the query that caused it to be retrieved. The model therefore needs explicit application controls that distinguish authoritative instructions from reference data.
How an indirect prompt-injection attack works
A useful mental model is a five-stage chain. The exact implementation differs between a public search engine, an enterprise RAG application, and an agent with tools, but the trust problem is similar.
- Content is influenced. An attacker edits a page, publishes a document, inserts text into a shared knowledge base, or compromises a source that an index trusts.
- The system retrieves it. A crawler, browser, connector, or vector search operation selects the content because it matches the user’s question or another workflow.
- The content reaches model context. The application supplies the retrieved text, often alongside system instructions, conversation history, and tool descriptions.
- The model follows or is influenced by the embedded instruction. It may obey an explicit command, give the source undue weight, or quietly alter its recommendation.
- The result reaches a sink. The sink may be a misleading answer, a disclosure of accessible information, a clicked link, an API call, an outbound message, or another tool action.
OpenAI’s agent-safety guidance separates the problem into a source and a sink. The source is the attacker’s way to influence the system; the sink is a capability that becomes dangerous when used in the wrong context. This explains why the same malicious page can have a modest effect on an answer-only search tool but a much larger effect on an agent that can read private files or send messages.
Where RAG systems are exposed
RAG security is not limited to the final prompt. The attack surface includes ingestion, document parsing, chunking, embeddings, vector or keyword storage, retrieval, response generation, output validation, and downstream agent integration. A poisoned chunk can persist in an index and affect future users even after the original page changes.

What an attacker can achieve
Impact is determined by the system’s permissions and safeguards. The same injected sentence can produce different outcomes in different products.
Answer manipulation
The least dramatic outcome is a wrong or biased answer. A source might instruct the model to prefer one product, omit a competing fact, repeat a false claim, or state that the source is authoritative. OpenAI uses a malicious apartment listing as an everyday example: an embedded instruction could make an assistant recommend that listing regardless of the user’s preferences.
Data disclosure
If the assistant can access private conversation history, internal documents, customer records, or other connected data, an injected instruction may try to make the model reveal that information in its response or transmit it elsewhere. Access controls still matter: content cannot disclose data the system cannot reach, but excessive permissions increase the possible damage.
Unintended external actions
An agent may be able to follow a link, call an API, create a ticket, send an email, or complete a transaction. An attacker can use retrieved instructions to steer one of those capabilities. Consequential actions are especially risky when the system performs them without showing the user what will happen and requesting confirmation.
Exfiltration through ordinary-looking requests
Malicious content may tell an assistant to append conversation data to a URL, include secrets in a form submission, or paste information into a third-party service. The action can look like normal browsing unless outbound destinations and parameters are inspected.
Documented examples and what they do—and do not—prove
Microsoft has described an earlier incident involving Bing Chat in which hidden instructions on a malicious web page caused the assistant to treat page content as a command, generate an image request to an attacker-controlled server, and unintentionally transmit conversation data through URL parameters. Microsoft says that specific issue was fixed. It is a documented historical example, not evidence that every current AI search product behaves identically.
Microsoft has also described hidden prompts in a Word document that manipulated an assistant summarizing the file into exposing private information. The lesson is broader than web browsing: any document-processing feature that treats external text as trusted instructions can be exposed.

These cases show why “the model only summarizes” is not a sufficient safety argument. Summarization still gives the model an opportunity to follow instructions embedded in the material being summarized, and the result can flow into another system.

Prompt-injection detectors can identify suspicious phrases, but no detector can reliably recognize every future attack or infer the full intent of arbitrary content. Benign documents may contain words such as “ignore,” “system,” or “instruction,” while hostile text can be indirect, multilingual, encoded, hidden in markup, or split across chunks.
Microsoft recommends layered probabilistic and deterministic defenses, isolation of untrusted content, and runtime monitoring. It also advises assuming that indirect prompt injection will happen. OWASP’s RAG guidance treats the entire pipeline as a security problem rather than placing all responsibility on the model’s final prompt.
Layering has costs. More checks can add latency, false positives, engineering complexity, and ongoing tuning work. The right controls depend on whether the application is a public answer engine, an internal knowledge assistant, or an autonomous agent handling money, records, or communications.
Defenses for AI-search and RAG builders
1. Mark external content as untrusted
Represent retrieved pages, documents, snippets, and tool outputs as data, not instructions. Keep them in a clearly separated context section and tell the model that they cannot change system policy, permissions, or the user’s request. Do not let a retrieved passage rewrite the tool definitions or planning rules.
2. Stage and inspect content before indexing
- Review which connectors and feeds are allowed to write to the index.
- Validate document type, parser behavior, ownership, and integrity before processing.
- Scan for suspicious instructions, hidden text, unexpected redirects, and embedded scripts where applicable.
- Record the original source, retrieval time, document identifier, and transformation steps.
- Avoid automatically trusting newly synchronized or externally editable repositories.
Inspection is a risk-reduction step, not proof that a document is safe. Keep provenance so an operator can remove or quarantine a poisoned item.
3. Preserve permissions through retrieval
Use permission-aware indexes and document-level access checks. Apply metadata filters before generation, verify authorization again when a result is opened, and prevent a model from using search as a way around tenant or folder boundaries. A relevant chunk must not become visible merely because it matched the query.

4. Apply least privilege to the model and connectors
Give the assistant only the data and tools required for its job. Separate read-only search from write-capable workflows. Restrict which domains, APIs, mailboxes, databases, and file stores an agent can reach. Short-lived credentials and narrowly scoped connector permissions limit the consequences of a successful manipulation.
5. Gate consequential actions
Require an explicit user confirmation before sending a message, publishing content, purchasing something, changing a record, transferring data, or calling a high-impact external service. Show the proposed action, destination, and material parameters. Confirmation should happen after the system has assembled the action but before execution, so the user can spot an injected change.
Recommended Free Tools
6. Validate outputs and destinations
Use deterministic rules for allowed domains, API methods, recipients, file locations, and data classifications. Check generated links and tool arguments before execution. A model’s statement that an action is safe is not an access-control decision.
7. Monitor, log, and preserve provenance
Log ingestion events, retrieval identifiers, permission decisions, model instructions, tool calls, confirmations, and outbound destinations. Keep enough context to reconstruct which source influenced an answer or action. Alert on unusual data movement, repeated instruction-like content, cross-tenant retrieval attempts, and calls that do not match the user’s task.
8. Test the whole pipeline
Use adversarial test harnesses that place known-bad instructions in web pages, PDFs, emails, metadata, and chunk boundaries. Test whether retrieved text can override system rules, whether a user can retrieve another tenant’s content, and whether an agent will send or expose data without confirmation. Repeat tests after parser, embedding, retrieval, model, or connector changes.

Users cannot repair an application’s architecture, but they can reduce exposure:
- Be cautious when an answer suddenly asks you to open an unrelated link, upload a file, disclose credentials, or disregard the original question.
- Check important claims against the cited source and an independent source.
- Do not paste secrets into an AI search session merely because a retrieved page requests them.
- Review recipients, URLs, permissions, and transaction details before approving an assistant’s action.
- Report suspicious pages or documents to the service owner, especially when the same instruction appears across unrelated sources.
These habits help with manipulation, but they are not substitutes for permission controls and safe agent design.

How to assess an AI-search architecture
When comparing systems or designing one, evaluate the following questions rather than relying on a generic “prompt-injection protection” label:
| Assessment area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Sources | Which websites, files, email systems, and connectors can enter context? Can an outside party edit them? |
| Trust boundaries | Are retrieved passages and tool outputs visibly separated from authoritative instructions? |
| Permissions | Do user and document permissions survive indexing and retrieval? Are checks repeated before access? |
| Data exposure | What private information can the model read, quote, summarize, or transmit? |
| Tools and sinks | Can it browse, call APIs, send messages, modify records, or make purchases? |
| Human control | Which actions require confirmation, and does the confirmation show destination and parameters? |
| Operations | Are ingestion, retrieval, outputs, and tool calls logged with provenance? |
| Testing | Are known injection cases, cross-tenant attempts, and poisoned connectors tested end to end? |
| Trade-offs | What latency, false-positive rate, maintenance effort, and usability cost do the controls create? |
This is a decision checklist synthesized from agent source-and-sink analysis and RAG security guidance, not a published product scoring system.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say about frequency
There is no topic-wide prevalence figure or comparable success-rate statistic that establishes how often indirect prompt injection succeeds across AI search products. OpenAI’s agent-design material reports one 2025 example that worked “50% of the time” under a specific prompt and test setup. That result should not be treated as a general attack-success rate.
Prompt injection is an evolving threat. A system that resists one known string may still be vulnerable to a different source, language, document format, or tool path. Security claims therefore need a defined threat model, test corpus, permissions model, and date.
The bottom line for AI search
Indirect prompt injection is not simply a bad phrase in a search result. It is a trust-boundary failure that occurs when an AI system reads attacker-controlled content and gives that content influence over decisions or actions. Retrieval makes the attack path possible; permissions and tools determine the consequences.
Design AI search as though hostile content will eventually be retrieved: isolate it from governing instructions, preserve user permissions, minimize access, require confirmation for consequential actions, validate destinations, and monitor the complete retrieval-to-action chain. Those controls cannot make the risk disappear, but they can prevent a poisoned page from becoming an unrestricted command.
