What Is imtclnwz.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix imtclnwz.exe Errors on Windows

imtclnwz.exe is a Windows executable that third-party file databases associate with Microsoft IME 2012 and other Microsoft components. That association does not prove that every file with this name is genuine. Treat the file as conditionally safe: verify its complete location, check its Microsoft digital signature, and scan that exact copy with Microsoft Defender before deleting, replacing, or allowing it to run.

For a missing or corrupted-file message, use Microsoft’s built-in repair sequence first: scan for malware, run DISM, then run System File Checker (SFC). Repair the application that reports the error with its official installer or repair option instead of downloading a loose executable.

What imtclnwz.exe appears to be

Third-party file databases identify IMTCLNWZ.EXE as a file associated with Microsoft IME 2012 and Microsoft Windows components. One database lists common locations under Windows system directories and a reported size of 69,120 bytes. Another lists Microsoft Corporation as the developer and associates the file with Microsoft Office Access 2010 version 14, Windows 10, and Windows 8.1.

Those entries are metadata reports, not a Microsoft-issued identity guarantee. Windows does not authenticate an executable from its filename alone. Malware can be given the same name as a legitimate component, and a damaged or incorrectly copied file can have the right name while still being the wrong file.

In practice, the question is not simply “Is the name safe?” It is whether this particular copy is in an expected Microsoft location, carries a valid Microsoft signature, and produces a clean security scan.

Is imtclnwz.exe safe?

A copy located in a normal Windows or Microsoft application directory, signed by Microsoft, and reported clean by Defender is more consistent with a legitimate component. A copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, an unusual AppData subfolder, or another location you cannot explain deserves investigation. An invalid or missing signature, a Defender detection, repeated recreation after deletion, or unexpected network and startup activity increases the risk that the file is malicious or has been tampered with.

No universal hash or Microsoft security bulletin establishes that every file named IMTCLNWZ.EXE is safe. Do not use the filename, reported file size, or a search-engine result as the deciding test.

Trust indicators to check

Check More reassuring Reason for caution
Full path A Windows system directory or the documented folder of a Microsoft application you installed Downloads, Temp, a random folder, or a path unrelated to Windows or the application showing the error
Digital signature Properties shows a valid Microsoft signature and Windows reports that the signature is intact No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer you do not recognize
Defender result The exact file and a broader scan are clean Any detection, quarantine event, or repeated detection after restoration
Behavior It is loaded only by the expected Windows or Microsoft program It launches at an unexplained startup point, changes security settings, or reappears from a new location

How to inspect the file before changing it

1. Find the exact copy

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager if an error or process refers to the file.
  2. On the Details tab, right-click the relevant process, choose Open file location, and note the complete path. If the file is not running, search for imtclnwz.exe in File Explorer and record every result rather than assuming the first result is the correct one.
  3. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the location, size, creation date, and version information. A reported size of 69,120 bytes appears in one third-party database, but size alone cannot authenticate a copy.

2. Check the digital signature

  1. In Properties, open the Digital Signatures tab.
  2. Select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report that the digital signature is valid. Check the certificate chain and signer name rather than relying on a picture or text description in the file’s version tab.
  3. If the tab is absent or the signature is invalid, do not replace the file with one downloaded from an unverified site. Quarantine or preserve the file while you complete a security scan and record its path and any detection name.

3. Scan that exact file

In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Show more options > Scan with Microsoft Defender. Open Windows Security’s Protection history afterward to see the result and the action Defender took. A clean result is useful evidence, but it should be considered together with the path and signature.

Why Windows reports imtclnwz.exe errors

The wording of the message usually points to the type of failure, but several causes can produce similar symptoms:

  • Missing file: the owning application was incompletely installed, a cleanup utility removed a component, or security software quarantined it.
  • Corruption: an interrupted update, disk problem, or damaged component store changed the file or related Windows files.
  • Wrong standalone copy: someone copied an executable from another computer or a download page into a system folder. A file with the right name can still have incompatible dependencies.
  • Application mismatch: an older Office or Windows component expects a version that is not present after an upgrade or partial uninstall.
  • Malware or tampering: a malicious program may use the familiar name, alter a legitimate file, or recreate a quarantined copy.
  • Path or permission problems: the file exists, but Windows cannot read it because permissions, storage errors, or a damaged profile prevent access.

Write down the complete message, the program that displays it, and when it appears (at startup, while opening Office, or during a particular task). That information determines whether Windows repair or application repair should come first.

Complete manual repair sequence

Follow these steps in order. Stop and preserve evidence if Defender identifies malware; do not restore a detected file merely to make an error disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Run a targeted scan, then choose the right Defender scan

  1. Use the File Explorer command above to scan the exact IMTCLNWZ.EXE copy.
  2. For a wider check, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. A Quick scan checks common locations; a Full scan examines all accessible files and running programs; a Custom scan lets you select a folder or drive.
  3. If the file is detected, open Protection history, record the detection name and path, and allow Defender to quarantine it. Keep the original quarantined rather than downloading a replacement.
  4. If the file returns, suspicious behavior continues, or the first scan cannot remove it, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can make persistent malware harder to hide. Save work before starting; the restart is expected.

Step 2: Repair the Windows component store with DISM

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for the operation to reach completion. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. Closing the window or restarting during the operation can leave the repair incomplete.

Step 3: Check protected files with SFC

  1. In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Allow the verification to reach 100 percent. SFC checks protected system files and can replace corrupted copies with a cached version.
  2. Restart Windows and test the program that produced the error. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Preserve the exact result text if the problem remains; it helps identify whether the issue is broader than IMTCLNWZ.EXE.

Step 4: Repair the application that triggers the message

If the message appears while launching Office, an older Windows component, or another identifiable program, use that product’s official repair workflow. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows), select the program, choose Advanced options when available, and use Repair or Reset. For Office installations that provide a repair choice, start with the less disruptive online or quick repair option offered by the official installer, then reinstall only if repair fails.

Do not copy a loose executable into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder. Installers register dependencies, permissions, and related files; a manually copied file may be the wrong build and can destabilize Windows.

Step 5: Install pending updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when requested. Updates can replace damaged components and resolve compatibility problems between an older application and the current Windows build. If the error began immediately after an update, note its date before attempting a rollback; do not remove updates solely because the filename is unfamiliar.

Step 6: Use System Restore when the timing points to a recent change

If the error started after a driver, application, or system change and a restore point exists, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Choose a restore point dated before the change, review the affected programs, and let Windows restart. System Restore changes system files and settings, not personal documents, but applications installed after the selected point may need to be reinstalled.

Step 7: Escalate after malware or storage evidence

  • If Defender detects malware, complete a Full scan and then an Offline scan if the detection returns. Disconnect from sensitive accounts while investigating and change passwords from a known-clean device if you have evidence of compromise.
  • If Windows reports disk errors, back up important data before repeated repairs. A failing drive can corrupt a replacement file again.
  • If no repair works and the error prevents normal use, restore from a known-good backup or use Windows’ official reset or reinstall path. Keep the path, signature details, scan result, and command output for reference.

Can you delete imtclnwz.exe?

Do not delete it simply because it is unfamiliar. If the file is a signed component in a Windows or Microsoft application directory and scans are clean, deleting it can break the program that owns it. If Defender identifies it as malware, follow Defender’s quarantine or removal action and do not manually restore it.

Situation Safer action
Expected Microsoft path, valid signature, clean scan Leave it in place; repair the owning application or Windows components if errors continue.
Unexpected path or invalid signature, no confirmed detection Do not execute or replace it. Preserve the path and scan results, then investigate with a Full or Offline scan.
Defender detection Allow quarantine, record the detection name, run a broader scan, and investigate why it appeared.
File missing after quarantine and a legitimate program will not start Repair or reinstall that program from its official installer; never obtain a loose copy.

Before any manual removal, create a restore point or ensure you have a recent backup. Reversibility matters: scanning and quarantining are safer than permanent deletion, while an official repair can restore the correct version and its dependencies.

What not to do

  • Do not trust the filename, icon, reported size, or a search result as proof of authenticity.
  • Do not use “DLL/EXE download” pages to obtain a replacement. A standalone file can be outdated, modified, or incompatible, and copying it into a system directory can create new errors.
  • Do not run registry cleaners that promise a one-click fix. They can remove entries needed by legitimate applications without repairing the underlying component.
  • Do not disable Defender or other security controls to launch an unverified copy.
  • Do not repeatedly delete a file that reappears. That pattern calls for a malware and startup investigation, not another deletion.

Choosing the next action by symptom

“imtclnwz.exe was not found” at Windows startup

Record the program named in the dialog and inspect its startup entry in Task Manager > Startup apps. Run the targeted and Full scans, then repair or uninstall the application that still references a missing file. If the entry belongs to software you no longer use, remove it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps rather than deleting a system file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The application was unable to start” or an invalid-image message

Run DISM followed by SFC, restart, and repair the named application. An invalid-image message can indicate corruption or an incompatible replacement, so downloading another copy is especially risky.

The error appears only when opening Office or an older program

Note the product edition and Windows version, install pending updates, and use the product’s official repair option. If repair fails, reinstall from the original account or installation media and keep the Defender result for the file that triggered the warning.

The file is in Downloads, Temp, or an unexplained AppData folder

Do not open it. Scan the exact file, review Protection history, and run a Full scan. Use Offline scan if it returns or if the system shows other signs of tampering.

Verify the result

  1. Restart Windows after DISM, SFC, application repair, or an Offline scan.
  2. Repeat the action that originally produced the message.
  3. Confirm that the repaired program opens without a new copy appearing in an unexpected folder.
  4. Check the file’s path and signature again if the executable is still present.
  5. Keep the final scan result and command output until the computer has operated normally for several restarts.

These checks distinguish a repaired component from a temporary disappearance. A clean scan does not prove that every unrelated startup item is safe, so investigate any new path or detection separately.
