IMFTips.exe is normally the “IObit Malware Fighter Tips” component installed with IObit Malware Fighter. A copy in that program’s directory with a valid IObit Information Technology signature is consistent with the legitimate component; the filename alone is not proof. Verify its path and signature, scan it with Microsoft Defender, and repair the related installation or Windows input services before deleting anything.
What IMFTips.exe is
Independent file references describe IMFTips.exe as “IObit Malware Fighter Tips,” with IObit listed as the developer. The usual installation path is C:Program FilesIObitIObit Malware Fighter. A sandbox record also shows the program launching from an IObit Malware Fighter folder under C:Program Files (x86) with the argument /starttips. That argument indicates a tips or notification component starting with the security application; it does not, by itself, indicate malware.

Windows can run either 32-bit or 64-bit applications, so the parent folder may be under Program Files or Program Files (x86), depending on the installed edition. The important point is that the executable should belong to an IObit Malware Fighter installation that you recognize. A similarly named file copied elsewhere is a separate object and must be assessed independently.
Is IMFTips.exe safe?
There is no filename-only answer. Safety depends on provenance, integrity and current scan results. A signed file in the expected application directory is more consistent with the bundled component than an unsigned copy in a system or temporary folder, but even a plausible path should be checked if the process behaves unexpectedly.

| Check | More consistent with the installed component | Reason to treat the file as suspicious |
|---|---|---|
| Location | The IObit Malware Fighter directory created by an installation you knowingly made | C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary directory, a user-profile folder, a downloads folder, or an unexplained duplicate |
| Digital signature | Properties show a valid signature from IObit Information Technology (or the signer expected for your installed release) | No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer unrelated to the installed product |
| Provenance | The file appeared when you installed or updated IObit Malware Fighter | It appeared after an unknown download, an unsolicited installer, or a suspicious browser event |
| Detection evidence | No detection after updated Defender scans and no other suspicious behavior | Microsoft Defender or another reputable scanner quarantines it, or several independent checks identify the same file |
| Integrity | The hash matches a known-good copy from the same release, when such a comparison is available | The hash differs from a trusted copy without a documented update or the file has changed unexpectedly |
ThreatInfo recorded one sample as PUP.Gen, analyzed on 2024-12-28. That is a sample-specific detection, not a prevalence rate and not proof that every IMFTips.exe installed by IObit is malicious. Use it as a reason to inspect the particular file rather than as a verdict about every copy.
Microsoft’s IME security guidance says that third-party input method editors must be digitally signed and that Windows Defender removes malicious IMEs. Those rules describe Windows’ input-method security model; they do not certify IMFTips.exe as a Microsoft component. IMFTips.exe is associated with IObit Malware Fighter, not with Windows itself.
Why IMFTips.exe keeps running or reports an error
Normal tips or notification startup
The /starttips launch recorded for the file is consistent with a component that starts when IObit Malware Fighter starts. A process that appears briefly and then exits can therefore be normal. Repeated pop-ups, a crash at every sign-in, or a process that consumes unusual resources points to a configuration or installation problem rather than proving infection.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Damaged or incomplete IObit installation
An interrupted update, removed support file, or mismatched program version can leave the tips executable unable to load. This is especially likely when the error began immediately after an IObit Malware Fighter update or a system restore.

A look-alike file
Malware and unwanted software can use familiar names. A copy in a Windows, temporary or profile directory, a missing signature, or an unexplained creation date should be handled as a separate suspicious file until scanning and provenance checks are complete.
Confusion with Windows input-method symptoms
Some reports use “IME” terminology for keyboard, language or text-entry failures. Those failures may involve Ctfmon.exe, the Text Input Management Service, or language-layout registry entries rather than IMFTips.exe. Repairing Windows’ input framework is appropriate when text entry, the language switcher or an IME fails, but it does not substitute for verifying the executable’s identity.
Language-pack or keyboard-layout conflicts
Microsoft documents conflicts involving the Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) language pack and custom keyboard-layout identifiers. A conflict can produce an input error at the same time that a user notices an unrelated IMFTips.exe process, creating the impression that one caused the other.

Verify the file before changing or deleting it
- Open the process location. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes or Details tab, locate IMFTips.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process has already exited, search for the filename in File Explorer and inspect each copy.
- Check the full path. Confirm that the file is inside the IObit Malware Fighter installation you intended to install. Do not assume that a result under a Windows, temporary or profile directory is legitimate.
- Inspect the signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature and choose Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid and identify IObit Information Technology, or the signer expected for your exact installed release. A missing or invalid signature is a stop sign: scan first and avoid launching the file.
- Review file details. In Properties → Details, compare the product and description fields with “IObit Malware Fighter Tips.” Record the creation and modification dates if you are investigating when the problem began.
- Record a hash when comparison matters. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathIMFTips.exe", replacing the path with the one you verified. Keep the result with the file version and signature details so support personnel can compare the exact binary. A hash by itself is not a safety verdict; it is an identity value. - Check installation history. In Settings → Apps → Installed apps (called Apps & features on older Windows), look for IObit Malware Fighter and note whether its install or update date matches the file’s appearance.
Scan and remove unwanted software safely
- Update Defender. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates and select Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Run a Full scan. Go to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options, choose Full scan and start it. Allow the scan to finish before deciding whether the file is safe.
- Use Defender Offline if the problem persists. From the same Scan options page, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads. This is useful when unwanted software keeps returning or interferes with a normal scan.
- Remove an unwanted parent application. If you do not need IObit Malware Fighter, uninstall it through Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features), then restart Windows. Removing the parent application is safer than deleting one executable from an installation you still use.
- Do not download a replacement executable. “DLL fix” pages and unofficial EXE repositories can supply modified or bundled files. Obtain repairs through the application’s legitimate installer or Windows’ own repair and update mechanisms.
If Defender quarantines the file, leave it quarantined while you investigate. Preserve the detection name, file path and scan date for support. Restore a file only when you have verified its provenance and understand why it was detected.

Repair an IObit Malware Fighter installation
When the file is signed and in the expected directory
If scans are clean but the tips process crashes, first close IObit Malware Fighter and restart Windows. Check the application for its own update option and install updates from the program’s normal, trusted channel. A version mismatch can be corrected by updating or reinstalling the parent application rather than replacing IMFTips.exe manually.
When reinstalling
Uninstall IObit Malware Fighter from Windows Settings, restart, and install a current copy obtained from a source you trust. Recheck the new file’s path and signature after installation. If the error disappears only after reinstalling, retain the old file’s hash and scan result in case the original needs further investigation.
When the application is needed for security
Do not disable Windows security protections to make the process launch. If the program conflicts with another security product, follow the documented compatibility guidance for the products involved and keep at least one actively maintained security solution enabled.
Fix Windows text-input and IME symptoms
Use this section when the actual symptom is a missing language switcher, a keyboard that stops working, an IME that will not initialize, or text-entry problems after sign-in. These steps address Windows’ input framework, not the identity of IMFTips.exe.

Restart the Text Input Management Service
Microsoft states that when this service is disabled, Ctfmon.exe cannot start and the IME framework does not initialize. On Windows releases before 11 version 25H2, the service was named Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service; newer releases use Text Input Management Service.
- Press Win+R, type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Text Input Management Service. On older releases, select Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service.
- Double-click it. Set Startup type to Manual or Automatic, as appropriate for your Windows configuration.
- If Service status is Stopped, select Start, then choose Apply and OK.
- Sign out of Windows and sign back in. Test the language switcher and the affected IME.
If the service cannot start, note the exact error from its properties and check Event Viewer for the corresponding service or application entry. Do not replace Ctfmon.exe with a downloaded copy.
Resolve a documented keyboard-layout conflict
If the problem began after installing the Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) language pack, Microsoft’s documented procedure checks custom layout identifiers in these locations:

Registry changes can prevent a user from signing in or can remove a needed layout. Before editing, open Registry Editor, select the relevant key and choose File → Export to save a backup. Record the affected user SID and layout IDs, then follow Microsoft’s current resolution method for the specific conflict rather than deleting random values. Restart or sign out only after the documented change is complete.
Best Value
When deletion is appropriate
Manual deletion is appropriate only when you have established that the file is unwanted and have preserved any evidence needed for support. If IMFTips.exe is the signed component of an IObit Malware Fighter installation you still use, deleting it can break that application or cause repeated repair prompts. Repair or uninstall the parent program instead.
Quarantine the file and complete the Defender workflow when it is unsigned, duplicated in an unusual directory, detected by Defender, or tied to an unexplained download. If the file is in the expected directory, correctly signed and not detected, leave it in place unless you remove the entire parent application.
Choose the response that matches the evidence
| Situation | Best next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Signed file in the known IObit directory; no detection; only a brief startup | Leave it installed and monitor the application | The behavior is consistent with a tips component launched by IObit Malware Fighter |
| Signed file in the known directory; repeated crash after an update | Update, repair or reinstall IObit Malware Fighter | The parent installation may be incomplete or version-mismatched |
| Unsigned or invalidly signed file in an unusual directory | Do not launch it; run a Full scan and, if needed, Defender Offline | Path and integrity do not support the claimed identity |
| Defender detection or persistent return after removal | Keep it quarantined, run Defender Offline and remove unwanted software | Persistence requires a pre-boot or full-system check |
| Keyboard or language input failure | Check the Text Input Management Service and documented layout settings | The Windows IME framework may be the actual source of the symptom |
| You no longer want IObit Malware Fighter | Uninstall it in Windows Settings and restart | Removing the parent program avoids leaving a partial installation |
These choices balance provenance, detection evidence, reversibility, symptom scope and whether you still need the parent application. Quarantine and uninstall are easier to reverse or support than deleting one file blindly.

Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep Microsoft Defender security intelligence and Windows updates current.
- Install applications and language packs only from sources you trust, and note what changed immediately before an error appeared.
- Keep the original path, signature result, hash, detection name and scan date when reporting the problem.
- Do not approve an unknown startup entry merely because its name resembles a Windows component.
- Back up the registry before changing keyboard-layout keys.
- Use the application’s repair or uninstall process instead of deleting files from a program directory.
