Short answer: treat imesearchps.exe as unverified until you inspect the file itself. Microsoft’s MS15-116 Pinyin IME inventory lists imesearch.exe and imesearchps.dll, but not imesearchps.exe. A similar-looking IME DLL is documented under C:WindowsSystem32IMESHAREDimesearchps.dll, yet a filename alone cannot prove that any local file is legitimate. Check the process path, signature, hash and Microsoft Defender results before repairing or deleting anything.
What is imesearchps.exe?
imesearchps.exe is not an identity that Microsoft establishes in the file table for its MS15-116 Pinyin Input Method Editor (IME) update. That table records:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| File name | Evidence in Microsoft’s MS15-116 table | What it means |
|---|---|---|
imesearch.exe |
Version 14.0.7162.5000; file date 13 October 2015 | A documented executable associated with that legacy Pinyin IME update |
imesearchps.dll |
Listed in the same inventory | A documented IME-related library |
imesearchps.exe |
Not listed | The exact executable name is unverified and needs local inspection |
A DFIR registry-pattern corpus records the path Windows\System32\IME\SHARED\imesearchps.dll. That is consistent with an IME COM-proxy DLL, not proof that an executable with the almost identical name belongs to Windows. The 14.0.7162.5000 version and 2015 date apply to the cited Pinyin update; they are not a current version claim for every Windows release.

Windows components can expose a process name while loading a DLL with a different name. A visible task, an executable on disk and a library loaded into a process are three different things. A report that says “imesearchps.exe” may be a typo for imesearch.exe, a mistaken reading of imesearchps.dll, or a program deliberately using a familiar-looking name. Establish which object you actually have before choosing a repair.

Is imesearchps.exe a virus?
There is no safe or unsafe verdict from the name alone. The useful question is whether the specific file on your computer has a plausible location, a valid signature, a consistent version and hash, and a clean security scan.
| Check | Evidence that supports a genuine Windows/IME component | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Exact name | The file is actually a documented name such as imesearch.exe or imesearchps.dll |
The file is an undocumented imesearchps.exe, or the report does not match the file on disk |
| Full path | A protected Windows or IME directory, such as C:WindowsSystem32IMESHARED for the DLL pattern |
A user-writable location such as Downloads, a temporary folder or an unfamiliar profile subfolder |
| Digital signer | A valid Microsoft or expected IME publisher signature that Windows can verify | No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer unrelated to the component |
| Version and date | Details consistent with the installed Windows/IME release; the 14.0.7162.5000/13-October-2015 values belong specifically to the MS15-116 entry | Implausible metadata, a future-dated file, or a mismatch with the installed component |
| Hash and scan | A hash that matches a trusted reference and no detection from an updated Defender scan | Defender detection, changing hashes, persistence after removal, or unexplained network and startup activity |
Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted applications. An unknown file should be investigated and, if necessary, submitted through Windows Security for analysis rather than assumed to be malicious or harmless.
How to verify the file safely
Do these checks before renaming, replacing or deleting anything. If the process is currently consuming resources, record the time, CPU and memory readings first; timing can help you compare the event with a Windows or IME update.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the actual file location. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details or Processes tab, locate the suspicious entry, right-click it and select Open file location. If no process is running, search the drives for the exact filename and inspect each copy.
- Confirm what Windows is showing. Check whether the file is truly
imesearchps.exe, or whether the process has loadedimesearchps.dll. In Task Manager, a process name is not proof of the name of every module it uses. - Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signer, choose Details, and make sure Windows reports that the signature is valid. A signature is stronger evidence than a familiar-looking filename, but an absent signature is a reason for caution rather than automatic proof of malware.
- Record the path and metadata. Note the full path, file size, creation and modification dates, product name and file version. Compare the location with expected Windows IME directories. Treat copies in user-writable folders as higher risk.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. Open PowerShell and run:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathimesearchps.exe"
Replace the path with the one you recorded. Preserve the output so you can compare it with a trusted reference or provide it to security support. - Check the Authenticode result. In PowerShell, run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature -LiteralPath "C:fullpathimesearchps.exe" | Format-List
ReviewStatusandSignerCertificate. A status other thanValidneeds an explanation before you trust the file. - Update security intelligence. Open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, choose Protection updates, and select Check for updates.
- Run a full scan. In Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start it. Leave the computer connected to power and allow the scan to finish.
- Use Microsoft Defender Offline when suspicion remains. From the same Scan options page, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first: Windows restarts and scans outside the normal desktop. Review the result in Protection history after Windows starts.
If Defender identifies the file, use its quarantine or removal action and follow the recovery instructions. Do not download a replacement executable or DLL from an unofficial “DLL download” site. Keep the original path, hash and scan result for troubleshooting, and create a restore point or other recovery option before making system changes.

Can you delete imesearchps.exe?
Do not delete it merely because the name looks unfamiliar. If the file turns out to be the documented imesearchps.dll, a legitimate IME component, or a file protected by Windows servicing, manual deletion can break text input, search or another application and may be undone by a repair operation.
When deletion is inappropriate
- The file is a signed component in a protected Windows or IME directory.
- The error is actually a Windows Search problem and the file is not the cause.
- You have not recorded the path, signature and hash.
- You have no restore point, backup or way to undo the change.
When to quarantine instead
If the exact executable is unsigned or invalidly signed, sits in an unexpected writable directory, and Defender detects it, quarantine it through Windows Security rather than manually deleting it. If a security product reports a false positive, submit the file for analysis and keep it isolated while you wait for a determination.
Why imesearchps.exe errors can appear
An alert mentioning this name does not establish that the file caused the failure. Common explanations include:
- Name confusion: a message substitutes
imesearchps.exeforimesearch.exeorimesearchps.dll. - Windows Search damage: an index, Search process or package registration is broken, producing an IME-search symptom.
- Update timing: a Windows or IME update changes files or registrations and exposes an older dependency.
- Missing or altered component: a cleanup utility, failed update or disk problem removed or changed a required file.
- Masquerading software: an unrelated executable chose a name close to a legitimate component.
Compare the filename, full path, signer, version/date, hash and scan result together. Also note whether the error began immediately after a Windows or IME update. That comparison separates a genuine legacy component from a masquerading executable more reliably than the popup text.

How to fix Windows Search or IME-search errors
Use the following sequence when the symptom is search failure, a missing search panel, or an IME search error. These repairs address Windows Search; they do not prove that an imesearchps.exe file is genuine.
1. Install pending updates and restart
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install all applicable updates, and restart when prompted.
- Test Start/taskbar search and the affected IME after the restart.
On a metered connection or managed PC, an update may be deferred by policy. In that case, ask the administrator when the approved maintenance window is available rather than forcing a package change.
2. Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
On Windows versions that still support the legacy diagnostic tool, press Win+R, enter:
msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id SearchDiagnostic
Follow the prompts, apply the suggested repair, restart if requested, and test search again. Newer Windows releases may redirect or retire this troubleshooter; if the command does not open, continue with the restart and reset steps below.

3. Restart the Windows Search process
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Windows 10, select
SearchUI.exe; on Windows 11, selectSearchHost.exe. - Right-click the entry and choose End task.
- Open Start and search again. Windows launches the Search process the next time it is needed.
If the process immediately returns and fails again, continue rather than repeatedly ending it; repeated crashes usually indicate a package, index or profile problem.
4. Reset Windows Search with the version-appropriate Microsoft method
Microsoft provides different reset procedures for different Windows releases. Use the reset method that matches your edition and build, run it from an administrator account, and read every confirmation before proceeding. A reset rebuilds Search data; it does not validate or repair an unknown executable.
- Save open work and close Search-related windows.
- Back up important files and create a restore point before a reset.
- Run the Microsoft-provided reset script or procedure for your Windows version, allowing it to remove and recreate Search data.
- Restart Windows and allow indexing to rebuild. Results may be incomplete until indexing finishes.
5. Rebuild or regenerate the Search package data
Use this advanced step only after backing up. Close Search, Task Manager and Settings, then locate the Search package folder under %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages. The package name varies by Windows release; it commonly begins with Microsoft.Windows.Search_. Rename the matching package data folder (for example, append .old) instead of deleting it. Restart Windows so a fresh data folder can be created. If Windows refuses the rename because a file is in use, stop and use the supported reset procedure for your build rather than forcing permissions.

This is an administrator-level repair. Package names differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so first identify the Search package installed on your system. A general registration pattern is:
Best Value
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Where-Object { $_.Name -match 'Search' } | ForEach-Object { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml" }
Run it in Windows PowerShell (Admin) only when you understand which package it will register. If PowerShell reports that the manifest or installation location is missing, stop; do not substitute a random package name from the internet. Restart Windows and test Search after a successful registration.
7. Check the affected user profile
If Search works in another Windows account, the problem is likely profile-specific rather than a system-wide IME executable. Compare the package data and indexing behavior, back up the affected profile, and consider creating a fresh local test account. Do not copy an unverified imesearchps.exe into the new profile.
8. Repair system files only when evidence points there
A missing or corrupted Windows component may require the built-in system-file repair tools, but do not use them as a substitute for verifying the suspicious file. If Windows Update and Search repairs fail, record the exact error, run the supported system repair workflow for your Windows build from an administrator terminal, restart, and review the result before repeating commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuick Recap
What to do when the alert names imesearchps.exe specifically
- Pause the Search repair and complete the path, signature, hash and Defender checks.
- If the file is really a documented DLL or
imesearch.exe, correct the diagnosis and continue with the Search steps. - If it is an unsigned executable in a writable folder, isolate it with Defender and investigate its startup entry, scheduled task or parent process.
- If the file is signed and located in an expected Windows directory but Search still fails, preserve the metadata and use the update, troubleshooter, restart, reset and package-registration sequence.
- If the error began after an update, note the update’s date and build. Do not roll back or replace system files until you have a recovery plan and have confirmed the component identity.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching the web for an “imesearchps.exe download” and replacing a system file with an unverified copy.
- Assuming every file under
C:Windowsis safe or every file outside it is malicious. - Deleting a DLL because an error message displayed an EXE name.
- Running broad registry cleaners or package-removal commands before backing up.
- Calling a 2015 file version the current version for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Stopping after a clean scan while ignoring an invalid signature, unexpected path or persistence mechanism.
