ildasm.exe is Microsoft’s Intermediate Language (IL) Disassembler for .NET assemblies. It reads managed Windows PE files such as .exe and .dll assemblies, displays their metadata and IL, or writes IL text for use with Ilasm.exe. The genuine tool is safe when it comes from supported Visual Studio or .NET tooling, but Microsoft says to use it only with trusted input. Most errors have a straightforward cause: the wrong developer shell, a missing Visual Studio component, a native file, or an assembly that is not available as a normal file on disk.
What ildasm.exe does
.NET applications are commonly compiled from source into a portable executable (PE) file containing intermediate language and metadata. Ildasm.exe reads that managed PE and presents the contents as IL instructions, type and method metadata, and related assembly information. It has both a graphical interface and command-line options, so you can inspect one method interactively or create text output for a build or diagnostic workflow.

The output is IL, not the original C# or Visual Basic source. Comments, source formatting, and some source-level names are not part of the runtime IL. That distinction matters when you are checking what an assembly contains, comparing builds, or investigating a loader problem: ildasm shows what the managed assembly actually exposes, while a decompiler has to reconstruct a higher-level language.

The exact type and method syntax depends on the names in the assembly. If a name contains characters that the shell treats specially, quote the argument or select the item in the graphical interface.

Is ildasm.exe safe?
The filename itself is not malware when it is the genuine Microsoft utility installed with supported Visual Studio tooling. Microsoft documents Ildasm.exe as a Visual Studio component and supports launching it from the Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt or Developer PowerShell.
The important safety boundary is the file you pass to the program. Microsoft’s warning is explicit: “Ildasm.exe should only be used with trusted input. Do not pass untrusted files to Ildasm.exe.” Disassembling an unknown download is therefore not a safe way to investigate it. Verify where the assembly came from, keep it in a controlled location, and follow your organization’s malware-handling process before opening it.
Check the copy of ildasm.exe
- Open the Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt or Developer PowerShell from the Windows Start menu rather than an arbitrary terminal.
- Run
where ildasm. Windows will list the copy that the current shell resolves through its command path. A path inside the Visual Studio installation is expected; a copy in a temporary or user-download directory deserves additional verification. - In File Explorer, right-click the resolved file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. Do not treat the filename alone as proof of authenticity.
- If Windows displays a warning for downloaded content, read it before opening the file. Visual Studio and Windows use Mark of the Web information to flag content that originated outside the local computer.
A valid signature does not make an untrusted input assembly safe. It only helps establish the origin of the utility itself. Keep those two checks separate: verify the executable, then verify the provenance of every file you feed to it.

Microsoft’s current guidance is that Ildasm.exe is installed automatically with Visual Studio. The supported launch path is the Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio or Developer PowerShell for Visual Studio, because those shells set the environment needed by Visual Studio development tools.
- Open Start and search for the Visual Studio developer shell that matches your installed edition.
- Open the shell, type
ildasm, and press Enter. The graphical disassembler should open. To inspect a file immediately, use a command such asildasm MyFile.dll. - If the command is not found, run
where ildasmto confirm whether the shell can resolve it. - If no path is returned, open Visual Studio Installer, choose your Visual Studio installation, select Modify or Repair, and verify that the relevant .NET development tools or SDK components are installed. Finish the installer operation, close the old terminal, open a new developer shell, and test again.
Opening a normal Command Prompt does not automatically configure the Visual Studio tool paths. You can add paths manually, but the developer shell is the supported and less error-prone option because it uses the environment Microsoft expects for these tools.

Prepare the input before troubleshooting
Many apparent ildasm failures are really input mismatches. Before changing Windows settings, establish what you are opening.
- Confirm that it is the intended file. An
.exeor.dllextension does not prove that the file contains managed .NET code. Native Windows programs use the same extensions. - Use a file on disk. Ildasm operates on PE files available as files. It does not open an assembly directly from the Global Assembly Cache (GAC).
- Work from a trusted copy. Obtain the assembly from its legitimate installation or build output and respect permissions, licensing, and internal handling rules.
- Expect limitations for native content. A PE containing embedded native code, including output produced by Visual C++, may not produce a usable IL text disassembly.
- Keep the original unchanged. Write output to a separate location and use a copy of the input when you are experimenting with commands.
How to fix common ildasm.exe errors
“ildasm is not recognized as an internal or external command”
This message means the current shell cannot find ildasm.exe through its command path. It does not, by itself, mean that the executable is missing or damaged.

- Open the Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio or Developer PowerShell for Visual Studio.
- Run
where ildasm. If it returns a path, runildasmagain from that same shell. - If it returns nothing, use Visual Studio Installer to modify or repair the installation and verify the .NET/SDK development components. When the installer finishes, open a new developer shell; an existing terminal will not automatically receive the updated environment.
- If several paths are returned, check which one appears first and verify that it belongs to the Visual Studio installation you intend to use. Do not run an unexpected copy solely because its name matches.
Launching the right developer shell resolves the majority of “not recognized” cases. Installing a second copy into a random directory can create multiple versions and make future command resolution harder to diagnose.
“The file has no valid common language runtime header”
This error indicates that the selected PE does not contain the managed .NET header that ildasm expects. The usual causes are a native-only executable, the wrong file from a software package, or a file that is not a valid managed assembly.
- Check the file name and location against the application’s documented managed assembly or build output.
- Try the corresponding managed
.dllor.exeif the package contains both native and managed components. - Do not keep retrying the same native binary with different ildasm switches. A native-only PE cannot be converted into managed IL by changing the command.
- If the file came from a build, ask for the managed target or rebuild the project for the intended .NET target.
“No valid CLR header” is therefore an input diagnosis, not evidence that ildasm.exe itself is corrupted.

The assembly is in the Global Assembly Cache
Ildasm does not operate directly on files installed in the GAC. Locate the corresponding assembly file on disk, copy it to a permitted working directory, and inspect that copy. Follow the system owner’s permissions and the assembly’s licensing terms; do not replace or modify the GAC copy merely to make disassembly convenient.

If you cannot obtain a legitimate file copy, the correct next step is to contact the application owner or use the application’s supported build or diagnostic process. Changing ACLs or extracting files from protected locations without authorization can create a separate deployment or security problem.
The file contains native or mixed-mode code
Microsoft notes that the IL text workflow cannot be used with PE files containing embedded native code, such as files produced by Visual C++. Mixed-mode or native portions can prevent a normal managed disassembly even when the file also contains some .NET metadata.
Use a purely managed build when your goal is IL inspection. If the component is intentionally native or mixed-mode, treat the result as an input limitation and use the diagnostic method appropriate to that native component rather than repeatedly repairing the Visual Studio installation.
Access, trust, or download warnings appear
Use a trusted local copy of the assembly and follow Windows or Visual Studio trust prompts. Do not pass an unknown download to ildasm simply because you want to see what it contains. Mark of the Web warnings are a signal to verify origin and handling requirements first.

If the file is blocked by location or permissions, obtain an authorized copy in a working directory where you have access. Avoid disabling security controls globally; that changes the risk for every file, not just the assembly you are investigating.
The command runs but the output is incomplete or unexpected
Check the command and the output destination. /text sends the disassembly to the console, while /output: writes IL text to the specified file. A targeted /item: request can show only one class and method, which may look incomplete if you expected the whole assembly. Run the command without /item: when you need a full view.
Supported inputs and output behavior
Ildasm is primarily a managed PE inspection tool, but Microsoft documents additional PE-related inputs with specific limitations.

Assemblies can contain resources in addition to types and methods. When managed resources are embedded, ildasm can emit the IL text together with .resources files. Embedded unmanaged resources can produce a .res file according to the output filename convention. Seeing extra resource files beside the IL output is therefore expected behavior, not necessarily a failed export.

Reliable command-line recipes
Use these recipes from a Visual Studio developer shell, replacing the example names with files you are authorized to inspect.
- Open the graphical view: run
ildasm MyFile.exe. Select types, methods, metadata, or resources in the tree to inspect them interactively. - Create reusable IL text: run
ildasm MyFile.exe /output:MyFile.il. Open the resulting file in a text editor or pass it to a workflow that understands IL Assembler syntax. - Keep the terminal visible: run
ildasm MyFile.exe /text. This is useful for quick checks or redirected console diagnostics. - Inspect one member: use the
/item:option with the class and method you need instead of generating a large listing. - Confirm command resolution first: run
where ildasmbefore any of the commands above when troubleshooting a new machine or shell.
Use a distinct output filename for each input and preserve the original extension in your notes. That makes it easier to match a listing to the assembly version that produced it.
When you need readable C# instead of IL
Visual Studio can generate source code while debugging .NET applications. Microsoft documents this decompilation capability for Visual Studio 2019 version 16.5 and later. It is useful when you need to follow execution in a source-like view, set a debugging context, or understand a call path without the original project.
Generated source is not the original source. Comments and formatting are absent, and some source-level names cannot be recovered from runtime IL. Microsoft recommends using generated code to understand execution rather than treating it as a replacement for the author’s source files.

Choose ildasm when exact IL and metadata are the evidence you need. Choose Visual Studio’s generated source when readability and debugging context matter more than preserving the low-level representation.
A practical decision path
- Identify the symptom. If the shell cannot find the command, troubleshoot the developer environment. If ildasm reports no CLR header, troubleshoot the input file.
- Verify provenance. Confirm that the utility resolves from Visual Studio tooling and that the assembly is trusted and authorized for inspection.
- Confirm file type. Use a managed .NET PE on disk. Do not expect native-only, mixed-mode, or direct GAC input to behave like a normal managed assembly.
- Run the smallest useful command. Start with the graphical view or
/text; add/output:for a saved listing and/item:only when you need one member. - Switch approaches when the question changes. Use Visual Studio decompilation for source-like debugging context, while retaining ildasm for IL and metadata inspection.
These checks separate installation problems from file-format limitations. Reinstalling Visual Studio cannot add a CLR header to a native executable, and changing the input file cannot repair a shell that has no path to the tool.
