ijplmui.exe is usually the Windows user-interface component of Canon’s Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program. Canon documentation identifies “IJPLMUI.exe” as the program users may be asked to allow when the survey sends printer-usage information. A file with that name is not automatically safe, however. The same executable name has appeared in Trend Micro’s 2024 research on DLL side-loading, where attackers used a legitimate-looking executable together with IJPLMCOM.dll. Verify the file’s location, digital signature and behavior before allowing it. If you no longer want the survey, remove its Canon package through Windows’ installed-app controls instead of deleting the executable or downloading a replacement.
What ijplmui.exe is
ijplmui.exe belongs to Canon’s Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program, a component installed with some Canon printer, scanner or fax software. The executable supplies the survey program’s Windows interface. It is not the main print spooler and it is not a universal Windows system file.

Canon’s help documentation refers to the executable as IJPLMUI.exe when explaining a security prompt. Windows may display the name in a different case, such as ijplmui.exe; capitalization does not change the file identity. The component can run in the background so the survey can collect printer-usage information after you have agreed to participate.

Why it may be running
During Canon printer-software setup, the Extended Survey Program can be installed alongside drivers and utilities. If you accepted Canon’s survey terms, information is sent over the Internet. Canon states that transmission occurs automatically from the second survey onward unless you change the setting. That explains why the process can appear even when you are not actively printing.

On older installations, software inventories commonly place the file at C:Program FilesCanonIJPLMijplmui.exe. A 32-bit package on 64-bit Windows may instead use C:Program Files (x86)CanonIJPLMijplmui.exe. The exact folder depends on the Canon model, package and Windows installation.
Is ijplmui.exe safe or a virus?
It is conditionally legitimate, not automatically trustworthy. A copy installed with Canon software, located in a Canon IJPLM directory and carrying a valid Canon digital signature is consistent with the survey component. A copy in a temporary folder, a user-profile directory, Downloads, or a random system folder deserves investigation. The filename alone cannot establish that a file is genuine.
What the threat research means
Trend Micro’s 2024 threat research lists ijplmui.exe in an example of DLL side-loading. In that technique, an attacker launches a legitimate-looking executable and places a malicious DLL with the name the executable expects beside it. The example identifies IJPLMCOM.dll as the sideloaded DLL. This does not mean every Canon installation is infected; it means an otherwise legitimate filename can be abused, so location, signer and surrounding files matter.
Check the full path in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Find ijplmui.exe (or IJPLMUI.exe) on the Processes or Details tab.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Compare the folder with the expected Canon IJPLM location. A different path is not proof of malware, but it is a reason to continue checking rather than allowing the process immediately.
If Task Manager opens a folder that has an unfamiliar name, a recently created executable, or other unexpected DLLs, leave the process stopped while you investigate. Do not copy a replacement executable from an unofficial download site.

Check the publisher signature
- In the opened folder, right-click
ijplmui.exeand select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the listed signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Canon as the signer.
Some older files may not expose a signature, so an absent tab is a warning to verify the package and scan the file, not a standalone malware verdict. An invalid signature, an unknown publisher, or a signature that does not match the Canon installation should be treated as suspicious.
Scan before restoring or allowing an unexpected copy
Use Windows Security when the location, signer, parent process or network activity does not fit a Canon installation:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Select Custom scan, choose the folder containing the executable, and start the scan. You can also right-click the file in File Explorer and select Scan with Microsoft Defender where that option is available.
- Follow Windows Security’s result. If it quarantines the file, keep it quarantined while you determine whether the Canon package needs repair or removal.
Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its name looks familiar. First confirm the path, signer and Canon software installation. If a security product detects a side-loaded DLL or another threat, preserve the alert details and investigate the whole directory rather than replacing one file.
Should you allow ijplmui.exe through a security prompt?
Allow it only when all three conditions are satisfied: the file opens from the Canon IJPLM (or another clearly identified Canon printer-software) directory, its signature is valid or the package is otherwise verified, and you intentionally use the Canon survey. If you do not want to send usage information, declining the prompt or uninstalling the survey package is reasonable. A firewall prompt by itself does not prove that the process is malicious; it reflects the survey’s Internet communication.

When the file is in an unexpected directory, unsigned or invalidly signed, repeatedly recreated after deletion, or accompanied by a suspicious DLL, choose the security product’s block or quarantine action and investigate before permitting network access. Printer operation and survey participation are separate decisions, but some Canon packages bundle components differently, so verify your model’s requirements before removing anything shared with printing or scanning.
How to remove ijplmui.exe safely
Remove the parent Canon survey package rather than deleting a single executable. Manual deletion can leave services, startup entries or installer records behind and may cause the installer to restore the file.
Windows 11 and Windows 10: Installed apps
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows 10 builds the page is labelled Apps & features.
- Search for Canon Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program.
- Select the three-dot menu (or the program entry), choose Uninstall, and confirm.
- Complete the Canon uninstaller’s prompts. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
Older Windows or the classic Control Panel
- Press the Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Highlight Canon Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the Canon installer prompts.
Canon’s manual documents this program-management route. Third-party software inventories also document a legacy uninstaller command, SETUP.EXE -R, in the Canon IJPLM directory. Use that command only when the installed Canon package exposes it and the normal Windows entry is unavailable; prefer the installed-program entry or Canon’s own installer.

What happens to the printer afterward?
Removing the survey component normally targets participation and reporting, not the printer driver itself. However, Canon packages differ by model and release. Before uninstalling, note the printer model and confirm that the listed program is the survey package rather than a driver, scanner utility or fax application. Afterward, print a test page and open any Canon scanning software you rely on. If printing or scanning stops working, reinstall the matching Canon package from Canon’s official support site for your exact model and Windows edition instead of downloading an isolated executable.

How to fix ijplmui.exe errors
The correct fix depends on what Windows reports and whether the file is genuine. Use the branch that matches your symptom.
Error: “ijplmui.exe not found” or “The program can’t start”
- Check whether the Canon survey program is still listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- If the package is listed, run its supported uninstall process and then reinstall the matching Canon printer software from Canon’s official support site. A missing executable can indicate an incomplete update, damaged installation or a security quarantine.
- If the package is not listed and you do not use the survey, remove leftover startup references through the Canon installer or leave the orphaned entry disabled rather than downloading a replacement file.
- Restart Windows and test the printer. Reinstall only the package intended for your model and Windows version.
Never obtain ijplmui.exe from a generic EXE or DLL download site. A file with the right name can be modified, unsigned or paired with a malicious DLL.
Error appears after a Windows or Canon update
An update may leave the survey component out of sync with the rest of the Canon package. First restart Windows and check whether the Canon survey entry is present. If it remains installed but the error returns, uninstall the survey package through Windows and install the current Canon package for the printer model. If you do not need survey participation, complete the uninstall and do not reinstall that optional component.

Occasional activity can occur when the survey prepares or sends usage information. Persistent high resource use is not something to dismiss solely because the filename looks familiar.
- In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Record the full path and check the file’s Digital Signatures tab.
- Run a Windows Security custom scan on the file’s folder.
- If the path or signer is unexpected, end the process, quarantine the file if security software recommends it, and investigate any adjacent DLLs, especially an unexpected
IJPLMCOM.dll. - If the file is verified as part of Canon’s package but you do not want the survey running, uninstall the Extended Survey Program using the steps above.
Windows Security or another security tool flags the file
Do not add an exclusion immediately. Stop or quarantine the process, save the detection name and file path, and check whether the file is in the expected Canon directory with a valid signature. A legitimate executable name can be involved in DLL side-loading, so inspect the directory and related files. If the alert persists after a clean reinstall, leave the survey package removed and contact Canon support with the detection details.
The file reappears after you delete it
That usually indicates that the parent Canon package, an installer repair task or a startup entry is still present. Deleting the executable does not remove those mechanisms. Use Windows’ installed-program list to uninstall the Extended Survey Program, restart, and then check Task Manager and the original directory. If a suspicious copy returns from a non-Canon path, scan the system and review startup items rather than repeatedly deleting the file.
You want to keep printing but not the survey
Uninstall only Canon Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program, not an entry labelled as your printer driver, scanner driver or fax utility. Canon states that the survey can be uninstalled from Windows program management. After removal, test the functions you use. If a particular model requires a shared Canon component, reinstall the model-specific package and decline survey participation when the installer offers that choice.

A mismatched path or signature does not identify the entire incident by itself. Treat it as an indicator requiring broader checks. Look for recently created executables and DLLs in the same directory, unfamiliar startup entries, repeated security alerts, or network connections that continue after the Canon package is removed. Run a full Windows Security scan if the initial custom scan finds anything or if multiple suspicious files are present. Keep important files backed up and avoid logging into sensitive accounts on a machine that may be compromised until the alert is resolved.
If malware is confirmed, follow the security product’s remediation instructions and consider professional incident-response help for a work computer. Do not attempt to “repair” a quarantined file by copying a similarly named executable from another PC; versions, signatures and dependent DLLs may differ.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting only ijplmui.exe: this can leave a broken Canon installation and does not remove the parent package.
- Trusting the filename: attackers can use the name of a legitimate executable in DLL side-loading.
- Downloading a replacement from an EXE site: the file may be modified, unsigned or incompatible with your Canon package.
- Removing the printer driver by mistake: select the Extended Survey Program entry, not a driver or scanner utility.
- Adding a security exclusion before checking the path: exclusions can allow a malicious copy to run unchecked.
- Assuming an Internet prompt proves infection: Canon documents Internet transmission for the survey after participation is accepted.
