idea.exe is the Windows launcher for JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA. A normal installation places it in IntelliJ IDEA’s bin directory; 64-bit installations may also contain idea64.exe, while idea.bat starts the same IDE through a command window. The filename itself is not evidence of malware. Safety depends on where the file came from, where it is stored, whether JetBrains is the signed publisher, and what a current antivirus scan reports.
If IntelliJ IDEA will not open, starts only with the batch file, disappears, freezes, or fails silently, work through the low-risk diagnostic steps first. Third-party plugins, damaged caches or configuration, invalid custom VM options, a broken update, and Windows Exploit Protection settings are all documented causes. Projects can usually be preserved while you repair the installation.

What idea.exe does
IntelliJ IDEA is a Java and Kotlin development environment, and idea.exe is its Windows launcher rather than a document, project file, or core Windows process. When you run it, the launcher starts the IDE runtime, reads the selected configuration, loads plugins, and opens the requested project or the welcome screen. JetBrains installs the launcher in the product’s bin folder. On a 64-bit build, idea64.exe may be present as the 64-bit launcher; idea.bat is the command-line batch equivalent.

The exact folder depends on whether you used the standalone installer, JetBrains Toolbox, a per-user installation, or a custom destination. That variation is normal. What is not normal is finding an identically named executable in a temporary folder, a random download directory, a Windows startup folder, or an unrelated application’s directory.

Is idea.exe safe?
An authentic copy installed by JetBrains is a legitimate application component. A copied file with the same name can still be unsafe, so check the file rather than trusting its name or icon.
1. Verify the full path
- Open IntelliJ IDEA’s shortcut properties, or open Task Manager while the process is running.
- Use Open file location (or the equivalent location command) and inspect the complete path.
- Confirm that the executable is under the IntelliJ IDEA installation’s
bindirectory. A Toolbox installation may use a versioned application directory; that is expected if it is inside the Toolbox-managed IntelliJ installation. - Treat a copy in
%TEMP%, a browser download folder, a startup folder, or another application’s directory as untrusted until you establish its source.
2. Check the digital signature and publisher
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab when it is available. The expected publisher for an official build is JetBrains. Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. An unsigned file, an invalid signature, or a different publisher is a warning sign, especially when the path is also unexpected. Signature checks support provenance; they do not replace an antivirus scan.
3. Scan the file and the computer
Update Microsoft Defender Antivirus, or another reputable antivirus product, and run a full scan. Microsoft notes that potentially unwanted apps are not necessarily malware but can display unwanted advertising, consume resources for cryptomining, install unexpected software, or perform other unwanted actions. A current full scan is therefore appropriate when the file’s origin is unclear or behavior is suspicious.

4. Remove an uncertain copy safely
Do not download a replacement idea.exe from a file-mirror or “DLL download” site. If you cannot establish a JetBrains origin, quarantine or remove the questionable copy using your security software and reinstall IntelliJ IDEA from the official JetBrains site or JetBrains Toolbox. Keep projects and important settings backed up before changing the installation.
Why IntelliJ IDEA may fail to start
A startup failure does not by itself indicate malware. JetBrains support identifies several ordinary causes:
- A third-party plugin is incompatible with the current IDE build or is damaged.
- The installation, an update patch, or files left by an interrupted update are corrupt.
- The IDE system directory contains damaged indexes or caches.
- The configuration directory contains an invalid setting, custom VM option, or incompatible plugin state.
- An update changed the runtime or launcher behavior and exposed a problem that was not present before.
- Windows Exploit Protection, particularly Mandatory ASLR, blocks
idea.exeoridea64.exe. In affected cases, the executable can fail silently whileidea.batstill starts.
These causes can produce similar symptoms, so collect evidence before deleting files or changing Windows mitigations.

Prepare before making changes
- Close IntelliJ IDEA and any background IDE process in Task Manager.
- Save or commit uncommitted project work. The repair steps target the IDE installation, system directory, and configuration; they should not modify source files, but a backup is prudent.
- Record the IntelliJ IDEA edition and version shown in the installation or Toolbox entry. JetBrains release numbers change, and instructions can differ between builds.
- Note whether the failure began immediately after an update, plugin installation, VM-options change, or Windows security-policy change.
- If the machine is managed by an employer or school, check with the administrator before changing exploit-protection policy.
Fix idea.exe errors step by step
Step 1: Run idea.bat to expose the first error
- Find the IntelliJ IDEA installation directory and open its
binfolder. - Click the address bar in File Explorer, type
cmd, and press Enter. This opens Command Prompt already set to that folder. Alternatively, open Command Prompt and usecd /d "fullpathtoIntelliJ IDEAbin". - Run
idea.bat. - Read the console output. Keep the first exception, missing-file message, plugin name, or VM-option error; later messages are often consequences of the first failure.
Starting from the batch file is low risk and diagnostic: it does not reset settings, delete projects, or weaken Windows security. If the IDE opens from idea.bat but not from the executable, note that distinction because it points toward launcher or Windows policy handling rather than a general project problem.
Step 2: Isolate a named third-party plugin
If the console or an error dialog names a third-party plugin, remove or disable that plugin first. Use the IDE’s plugin management screen if the IDE opens. If it cannot open, close all JetBrains processes, locate the directory specified by idea.config.path, and temporarily rename the third-party plugins directory by appending a suffix such as .old. Renaming preserves a rollback copy; do not delete it yet.
Start IntelliJ again. If it now opens, restore plugins one at a time, restarting after each addition, until the offending plugin is identified. Install a compatible version or leave the incompatible plugin disabled. Avoid blaming bundled JetBrains plugins when the evidence identifies a third-party one; the isolation test is intended to separate the two.

Step 3: Reinstall IntelliJ IDEA without discarding projects
- Back up projects and, if possible, export or copy important IDE settings.
- Obtain the same or a current supported build from the official JetBrains installer or Toolbox, not from a mirror.
- Run the installer or use Toolbox to repair or reinstall the IDE in the intended location.
- When offered a choice about settings, preserve the existing configuration if you have not already backed it up. JetBrains support states that reinstalling can preserve settings and projects.
- Launch the newly installed copy. If it starts, re-enable plugins selectively rather than restoring every old plugin at once.
Reinstalling replaces damaged program and patch files, but it may not remove a bad configuration or cache. If the same error survives a reinstall, continue with the directory-specific steps below.
Step 4: Clear the IDE system and cache directory
- Close IntelliJ IDEA and end any remaining IDE process.
- Determine the directory represented by the
idea.system.pathsetting for the affected installation. The location can vary by version, edition, and installation method. - Back up that directory, then delete it or rename it, for example to
system.old. - Start IntelliJ IDEA again. The IDE will recreate its system directory and rebuild indexes and other caches.
This step is moderately invasive but normally leaves source projects and the user configuration intact. The first launch can take longer while indexes are rebuilt. Do not remove the configuration directory in this step; system data and settings serve different purposes.
Step 5: Reset the configuration directory when the problem persists
- Close the IDE and make a complete backup of the directory identified by
idea.config.path. - Rename the configuration directory, such as
config.old, rather than deleting it. - Start IntelliJ IDEA. It will create a clean configuration with default settings.
- If startup succeeds, restore settings cautiously. Recreate custom VM options and add plugins individually instead of copying the entire old directory back.
Resetting configuration is more invasive than clearing caches: it can remove keymaps, UI preferences, plugin state, and custom VM options from the active profile. Keeping the renamed backup lets you recover individual settings after the cause is known.
Step 6: Check custom VM options
Invalid heap values or other custom VM options can stop the launcher before the IDE displays a window. If the console output mentions a VM option, undo the recent change or use the clean configuration created in Step 5. Do not increase the heap arbitrarily; use values supported by the installed IDE build and the computer’s available memory. If you need a custom option, add one change at a time and confirm that the IDE still starts.
Step 7: Review Windows Exploit Protection only when evidence points there
JetBrains support has documented startup failures caused by Windows Exploit Protection, specifically Mandatory ASLR. The pattern can be a silent failure of idea.exe or idea64.exe while idea.bat works.
- Open Windows Security.
- Go to App & browser control, then Exploit protection, and open Program settings. Labels can differ slightly between Windows releases.
- Look for a per-program entry for the exact IntelliJ launcher path. Check both
idea.exeandidea64.exeif both are installed. - Compare the program-specific settings with the system defaults and any policy applied by your organization.
- Use an executable-specific exception only if the evidence identifies Exploit Protection as the cause and you understand the mitigation change. Do not turn off exploit protection globally.
- Test the launcher, then restore the mitigation if the change does not resolve the problem. Record the setting so it can be reviewed after an IDE or Windows update.
Changing a mitigation has the greatest security impact of the repair options. If the setting is controlled by an administrator, ask that administrator to investigate rather than creating a local override.

Cleanly remove and reinstall IntelliJ IDEA
Use a clean removal only when ordinary reinstalling and directory resets do not work, or when the installation’s provenance is uncertain.
- Back up projects, settings, run configurations, and any licenses or environment details you need to restore.
- In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & Features in some versions), select IntelliJ IDEA, and choose Uninstall. If the installation includes it, you can instead run
binuninstall.exe. - After uninstalling, inspect the former installation directory and remove only leftover program files that belong to that installation.
- JetBrains documents separate per-user configuration and cache directories. Remove those remaining directories only after backing them up and only if you want a genuinely clean profile.
- Restart Windows, install IntelliJ IDEA from JetBrains or Toolbox, and test before restoring plugins or custom settings.
A clean removal can eliminate damaged program files and stale state, but it also removes the easiest rollback path. Keep the backups until the new installation has opened your projects successfully.

What to check after IntelliJ starts
- Open the project that previously failed and allow indexing to complete.
- Check Settings or Preferences for the installed plugin list, then add third-party plugins gradually.
- Review the IDE version and update channel. JetBrains’ September 2026 announcement covered IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2.3, but release numbers and available builds change; verify the version-specific documentation for the build you actually install.
- Remove obsolete VM options and keep a copy of any intentional runtime customization.
- Run another antivirus scan if the original problem involved an unexpected file path, signature, or process behavior.
- If a crash or silent exit returns, save the batch-file output and Windows Event Viewer details before repeating destructive steps. Those records make it easier to distinguish a plugin, runtime, file, or policy failure.
