1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsi_view64.exe is the legitimate 64-bit program file that runs IrfanView, a Windows image viewer. A normal installation commonly places it at C:Program FilesIrfanViewi_view64.exe. The file is generally safe when it came from an official IrfanView download and has the expected publisher, location, and checksum; a file with the same name in an unrelated folder must be investigated. The fixes below cover damaged downloads, stale file associations, read-only settings, plug-in mismatches, and systems that should use the 32-bit build instead.
What i_view64.exe does
IrfanView has separate 32-bit and 64-bit builds. In the 64-bit edition, i_view64.exe is the main executable—the component that makes IrfanView start and perform its image-viewing functions. It can open images, process files through IrfanView’s normal command-line operations, load file lists, and start slideshows. Those operations are normal application behavior and are not, by themselves, signs of malware.

The 64-bit build is intended for 64-bit Windows and is useful when working with very large images. IrfanView’s 64-bit page lists Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11 as supported systems. The current release shown there is version 4.76. The page also publishes SHA-256 hashes for the 4.76 installer and ZIP archive, which lets you check that a download was not damaged or replaced.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

On a standard installation, the expected path is C:Program FilesIrfanViewi_view64.exe. A custom installation folder is also legitimate, so the path alone is not a complete authenticity test. What matters is that the file belongs to an IrfanView installation you intentionally installed and that its publisher and checksum agree with the release information.

Is i_view64.exe safe?
IrfanView’s FAQ answers the question “Does IrfanView contain Spyware or Viruses, etc.?” with “NO.” That statement applies to IrfanView obtained through the official homepages and download links. It does not authenticate every file named i_view64.exe found on a computer.
Unofficial download sites may wrap software in custom downloaders, alter the package, or ask for payment for a program that is distributed free of charge. Treat an unexpected copy—especially one in a temporary, user-profile, or random system folder—as untrusted until you verify it.
Check the file’s location and publisher
- In File Explorer, right-click
i_view64.exeand choose Properties. - On General, note the complete path. Compare it with the IrfanView folder you intentionally installed. A custom folder is acceptable if you recognize it.
- Open Details and Digital Signatures, when those tabs are present. Check that the product and publisher information identify the IrfanView software you downloaded. The absence of a signature is not proof of malware, but an unexpected signer or a mismatch is a reason to stop and obtain a fresh copy from an official source.
- If the file appeared without you installing IrfanView, do not launch it. Quarantine or remove it only after preserving any information needed for a security investigation, and obtain IrfanView again from an official download page.
Verify the SHA-256 checksum
For the current 4.76 installer or ZIP, compare the file’s SHA-256 value with the value published on IrfanView’s official 64-bit page. The comparison must be exact; one changed character means the files are not identical.
Recommended Free Tools
- Download the installer or ZIP from an official IrfanView download link and note its location, such as
C:UsersYourNameDownloadsiview476_x64_setup.exe. - Open Windows PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash "C:UsersYourNameDownloadsiview476_x64_setup.exe" -Algorithm SHA256. Replace the example path with the real one. - Compare the returned
Hashvalue with the published SHA-256 value for that exact 4.76 file. Do not compare an installer hash with the ZIP hash. - If the values differ, delete the download, download it again from an official mirror, and repeat the check before installing.
A matching hash verifies the downloaded bytes against the published release value; it does not make an unknown file safe if you checked a different file or obtained the reference value from an untrusted page. Keep the verified installer if you need to repair the installation later.
32-bit and 64-bit IrfanView: which build should you use?
| Consideration | IrfanView 64-bit (i_view64.exe) |
IrfanView 32-bit (i_view32.exe) |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system architecture | Runs only on 64-bit Windows. | Runs on 32-bit Windows and is also the compatibility choice when an older 32-bit component is required. |
| Very large images | Designed for large images and can handle images above roughly 1.3 GB of image RAM, subject to available system memory. | More constrained by 32-bit address space. |
| Plug-ins | Requires plug-ins built for IrfanView-64. | Requires plug-ins built for IrfanView-32; many older plug-ins target this build. |
| Scanner and TWAIN support | Scanning command-line options are limited because 64-bit TWAIN drivers are uncommon. | Use this build for scanner workflows that depend on 32-bit TWAIN support. |
| Typical installation folder | Often C:Program FilesIrfanView, unless you selected another folder. |
Often a separate IrfanView-32 folder, depending on the installer and your choices. |
Do not install a 64-bit plug-in into the 32-bit folder or a 32-bit plug-in into the 64-bit folder. If you are on 32-bit Windows, i_view64.exe cannot run; install the 32-bit edition instead. On 64-bit Windows, choose the 32-bit edition when a scanner, TWAIN driver, or older plug-in has no 64-bit equivalent.
Prepare before repairing an error
- Close IrfanView and any file that it opened. If it is frozen, use Task Manager to end the IrfanView process before replacing files.
- Record whether you installed the 32-bit or 64-bit edition and where it is installed. This prevents repairing an association or plug-in against the wrong folder.
- Back up personal IrfanView settings and plug-in files before uninstalling or moving the program. Do not delete photographs or other files merely because IrfanView cannot open them.
- If the problem started after a cleanup or security utility removed files, check its quarantine and exclusion settings. Settings files and plug-ins can be removed even when the main executable is intact.
Fix “This is not a valid (Win32) application”
IrfanView’s FAQ attributes this message to a damaged or incomplete executable, usually caused by a download error. It can also appear when you try to run a 64-bit executable on 32-bit Windows.
- Check your system type in Settings > System > About. Under System type, confirm whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- On 32-bit Windows, remove the 64-bit installer or executable and download the 32-bit IrfanView build.
- On 64-bit Windows, delete the failed installer or damaged copy. Do not keep retrying the same file.
- Download the matching IrfanView installer or ZIP again from an official download link.
- Run the SHA-256 check described above when a published hash is available. A mismatch means the download must be replaced.
- Install the verified package, then start IrfanView from its new installation folder.
If a newly downloaded file still fails the checksum repeatedly, try another official mirror and check whether a browser, proxy, or security product is interrupting the transfer. Do not use a third-party “fixed” executable.
Fix “Cannot find the file or one of its components”
This message commonly appears when Windows has an old IrfanView association pointing to a folder that was moved, renamed, or deleted. It can also occur after uninstalling one bitness of IrfanView while the association still targets it.

- Locate the current executable in File Explorer. Right-click it, choose Properties, and copy or note its complete path.
- Double-click
i_view64.exedirectly. If it opens, the program is present and the association is the likely problem. - Repair the association through Settings > Apps > Default apps. Search for the image extension that fails, such as
.jpgor.png, choose the current IrfanView installation, and confirm the change. - Alternatively, right-click an image, choose Open with > Choose another app, select IrfanView, enable the option to always use that app for the file type, and confirm.
- Test each important image extension separately. Windows stores associations by extension, so fixing
.jpgdoes not automatically repair.tifor another type. - If the executable itself is missing, reinstall the same IrfanView bitness and then repeat the association steps. Do not point Windows at an old backup folder that you no longer maintain.
Fix settings that will not save
IrfanView stores settings in i_view64.ini (or the corresponding configuration file). If that file or its folder is read-only, changes may disappear when you close the program.
- Exit IrfanView.
- Find
i_view64.iniin the IrfanView installation or configuration location. Right-click it, select Properties, clear Read-only, and apply the change. Check the parent folder’s permissions as well. - Start IrfanView, change one setting, close it, and reopen it to test whether the change persists.
- If the installation folder is protected from writing, reinstall or move the INI to a writable AppData location using IrfanView’s configuration options. Use a location where your Windows account can create and modify files.
- Review cleanup, privacy, or security utilities that may delete INI files on exit. Exclude the IrfanView configuration location when that exclusion is appropriate for your security policy.
- If the INI is corrupt, close IrfanView, make a backup copy, and rename the file so IrfanView can create a fresh configuration. You will need to re-enter personal preferences.
Do not permanently run IrfanView with elevated administrator rights merely to bypass a read-only configuration. Correct the file location or permissions instead.
Fix plug-in load errors
Plug-ins must match both the IrfanView folder and its bitness. The official plug-in instructions specifically require 32-bit plug-ins in IrfanView-32 and 64-bit plug-ins in IrfanView-64.
- Check whether your main program is
i_view64.exeori_view32.exe. - Download the current plug-in package from the official IrfanView plug-in page.
- Install 64-bit plug-ins into the IrfanView-64 installation and 32-bit plug-ins into IrfanView-32. Do not combine files from the two packages.
- Check that the plug-in path shown in IrfanView points to the same installation you are launching. A second IrfanView copy can make a correct plug-in appear to be missing.
- Restart IrfanView after installing, replacing, or removing plug-ins.
- If an error began after adding one plug-in, remove that plug-in temporarily and test the program. Reinstall the matching package rather than copying individual DLLs from an unrelated download.
Fix scanner and TWAIN-related failures
The 64-bit build’s scanning command-line options work only where suitable 64-bit TWAIN support exists. Because 64-bit TWAIN drivers are uncommon, a scanner can work in IrfanView-32 while failing in IrfanView-64 even though Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Identify the scanner’s installed TWAIN driver architecture from the scanner manufacturer’s documentation or installer.
- If the driver is 32-bit or the scanner documentation specifies 32-bit TWAIN, install and use IrfanView-32 for scanning.
- Keep 32-bit plug-ins and scanner components in the 32-bit IrfanView folder; do not try to make them load into
i_view64.exe. - Use IrfanView-64 separately for viewing or processing very large images if that is useful. The two builds can coexist when each has its own folder and compatible plug-ins.
Reinstall cleanly when individual fixes fail
A clean reinstall is appropriate when the executable, configuration, association, and plug-in files are from different installations or when the installation folder is incomplete.
- Export or record settings you need, and back up custom plug-ins and personal files.
- Uninstall IrfanView from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label may vary slightly by Windows version).
- After uninstalling, check for a leftover IrfanView folder. Remove only files that belong to the old installation, not personal images or a configuration backup you intend to keep.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Download the correct 32-bit or 64-bit package from an official IrfanView source, verify its SHA-256 value when published, and install it to a known folder.
- Install only the plug-in package with the same bitness, recreate file associations, and test a normal image before restoring optional plug-ins or custom settings.
If the repaired program opens normally but one particular image still fails, the issue may be with that image’s format or corruption rather than i_view64.exe. Test several known-good images to separate a file-specific problem from an installation problem.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, and temporary or cache-file buildup. It also offers privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
When to stop troubleshooting
- Stop launching the file if its location, publisher, or download source is unexplained.
- Replace any installer whose SHA-256 value does not match the value for the exact release file.
- Use the 32-bit build instead of forcing 64-bit plug-ins or scanner drivers into IrfanView-64.
- Keep a verified installer and a backup of your configuration so a future association or INI problem can be repaired without downloading an unknown copy.
The practical test is straightforward: a verified IrfanView installation launches its matching executable, uses plug-ins of the same bitness, can write its configuration to a writable location, and has file associations pointing to its current path. When those conditions are true, most i_view64.exe errors can be resolved without replacing Windows or deleting personal images.
