Hybrid cloud storage is an integrated setup that combines storage in a private or on-premises environment with storage in a public cloud. The organization decides where data lives and connects the environments so it can access or move data between them as needed. Simply having local disks and a separate cloud account does not, by itself, make a storage system hybrid.
What hybrid cloud storage means
The formal cloud definition comes from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST): a hybrid cloud combines two or more distinct cloud infrastructures that remain separate entities but are connected by technology that enables data and application portability. NIST’s wording covers private, community, and public clouds; in storage discussions, the term usually refers to integrating private or on-premises storage with public cloud storage. See the NIST hybrid cloud definition.

The defining feature is integration. Shared access, data movement, or an orchestration and management layer can connect the environments. The architecture does not imply that every file is automatically synchronized or duplicated: the organization’s design and chosen tools determine how data is accessed and moved. Google Cloud describes storage placement as a choice made across private and public environments, with orchestration often used to integrate them (Google Cloud’s hybrid cloud overview).

There is no standard percentage or fixed rule for what stays local. An organization may keep data on premises or in a private cloud for sensitive workloads, local processing, low latency, data residency, or constraints involving bandwidth, transfer cost, and timing. Other data may be placed in public cloud storage for capabilities such as archiving or additional capacity. These are possible design choices, not automatic consequences of using hybrid storage; applicable rules and workload needs determine the right placement (AWS hybrid cloud use cases).

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
- Keep data local when: applications need nearby, low-latency access; processing must happen locally; or residency, connectivity, or operational constraints make local storage appropriate.
- Use public cloud storage when: cloud capacity or services suit the workload, such as storing archive data or supporting a gradual migration.
- Connect the environments deliberately: decide which systems can access each data set, how data moves, and which environment is authoritative for each workload.
What connects hybrid storage environments
Connection methods vary. An orchestration layer can coordinate placement and management, while a storage gateway can expose cloud storage to existing on-premises applications. For example, AWS documents Storage Gateway patterns that let on-premises applications access cloud storage using protocols such as SMB, NFS, and iSCSI (AWS Prescriptive Guidance on hybrid architectures).
A gateway is one implementation, not a requirement in the definition. Before choosing an integration approach, check that it supports the applications and protocols in use, provides the access controls and monitoring needed, and meets the organization’s recovery and availability requirements.

Why organizations use hybrid cloud storage
- Local performance: keep data close to applications that need low-latency access or local processing.
- Existing infrastructure: continue using on-premises investments while extending storage or services into the public cloud.
- Gradual migration: move workloads or data over time rather than replacing the local environment all at once.
- Operational or regulatory constraints: retain particular data locally when residency, bandwidth, data volume, or timing affects where it can practically be stored.
- Cloud-supported storage tasks: use public cloud storage for workloads such as archiving where it fits the organization’s requirements.
These are reasons to consider the architecture, not guarantees of lower cost, stronger security, or improved compliance. Outcomes depend on the design and how it is operated.

Trade-offs and design checks
Hybrid storage offers placement flexibility, but it also means integrating and operating more than one environment. Management, security, identity, and access controls must work across the boundary. Microsoft notes the added complexity that can accompany hybrid cloud environments (Microsoft’s hybrid cloud overview).

No single hybrid design is best for every organization, and the cited provider material does not establish a universal performance or savings benchmark. Compare architectures against these requirements rather than assuming that a hybrid arrangement automatically improves cost, security, or resilience.

Hybrid cloud describes an integrated combination of private or on-premises infrastructure and public cloud infrastructure. Multicloud means using services from more than one cloud provider; it does not necessarily include on-premises infrastructure. An organization can use multiple public cloud providers and an on-premises environment, making its setup both hybrid and multicloud. The terms describe different dimensions of an architecture (Google Cloud’s hybrid cloud overview; AWS Prescriptive Guidance on cloud deployment strategies).
