On an HP computer, a correctly installed and digitally signed copy is normally legitimate: it runs tests on supported hardware and reports whether a component appears to be working. The filename alone is not proof of safety, however. An unexpected copy, a damaged installation, or an outdated package can all produce warnings and launch errors.
Use the sequence below to verify the file, repair the application, restore Windows components, and switch to offline HP diagnostics when Windows cannot run it.

What hphwdiag.exe does
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows is a Windows utility that tests supported computer hardware. HP says the software can be preinstalled on new HP computers. Its executable is commonly named hphwdiag.exe, with capitalization sometimes displayed as HpHwDiag.exe.
HP’s current SoftPaq page, SP173208, lists version 3.1.1.0 for supported 64-bit editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11, with an effective date of May 20, 2026. The correct package still depends on the exact HP model and Windows edition, so do not install a package merely because its filename looks similar.

The utility is intended to answer a hardware question, not to act as a general-purpose Windows cleaner. A test result can indicate that a supported component appears to be functioning or can produce a failure code that needs follow-up. Keep the model number and Windows edition available when downloading an installer, because HP publishes packages for particular systems and supported 64-bit releases.
Windows diagnostics versus UEFI diagnostics
Windows diagnostics runs inside the operating system. HP also provides HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, which starts outside Windows. UEFI diagnostics is useful when Windows will not boot, the desktop application will not open, or Windows components are too damaged for an in-system test.
When a test identifies a suspected hardware failure, HP documents a 24-digit failure-ID process that can direct the case to repair resources. Record the complete ID, the component named by the test, and any displayed test code before closing the diagnostic screen. A partial number or a paraphrased description may not be enough for a support representative to route the case correctly.

It is normally safe when it arrived with an HP computer or was downloaded from HP’s official support or SoftPaq pages. Safety depends on provenance, file location, signer, and patch level—not on the name alone.
Verify where the file came from
- If the executable appeared in an unsolicited browser popup, email attachment, or unofficial download, do not run it. Close the prompt and obtain the diagnostic package directly from HP support for your model.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A legitimate HP package should show an HP signer. If the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer does not match HP, treat the copy as untrusted.
- Use Windows Security to scan an unexpected copy before opening it. A reputable-looking filename or warning message can still be deceptive.
- Check the installation location. A copy inside the normal HP PC Hardware Diagnostics installation directory is more plausible than one launched from a temporary download folder, a browser cache, or a random user-profile subfolder. Location is only a clue; retain the signature and scan checks.
Do not make a safety decision from a single clue. Malware can use a familiar name, while a legitimate installer can be stored temporarily in a download folder before installation. Confirm the signer, scan the file, and compare the installed version with the current model-specific HP package.
Why keeping it updated matters
HP has reported potential buffer-overflow and elevation-of-privilege vulnerabilities in certain versions of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows. HP supplied fixed SoftPaq minimum versions and recommends keeping the software current. If your installed release is older than the model-compatible package offered by HP, update it even when the program still opens.
Updating is therefore both a troubleshooting step and a security maintenance step. Do not retain an old installer simply because it worked once; first check whether HP lists a newer supported release for your computer and 64-bit Windows installation.

Why hphwdiag.exe errors occur
An application error does not, by itself, establish that the file is malware. Common explanations include:
- A damaged, incomplete, or interrupted HP installation.
- A package that does not match the computer model, 64-bit Windows requirement, or installed Windows release.
- Broken Windows app-registration data or services needed to launch the utility.
- Corrupted Windows component files that affect the application or its dependencies.
- An update-related change that left the app or a supporting component in an inconsistent state.
- A genuinely untrusted replacement file, especially when the copy came from outside HP’s distribution channels.
If the same dialog appears repeatedly, note when it appears: immediately at sign-in, when you select the HP diagnostic shortcut, or only during a test. That timing helps distinguish a launch or registration problem from a failure encountered by a particular hardware test. Do not keep clicking through a warning from an unverified executable just because the message returns.
One HP Support Community case dated May 20, 2025 involved error 0x800702E4 when HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows version 2.7.2.0 was launched on Windows 11. The support response recommended uninstalling and reinstalling the application. That case illustrates a repair path; it is not evidence that every hphwdiag.exe error has the same cause.
Before changing anything: identify the failure pattern
Use the symptom to choose the least disruptive first step. This avoids resetting Windows when only the HP app needs to be replaced.

When more than one path appears reasonable, compare five factors: whether Windows still starts, whether only this app is affected, whether the installed HP package is current and model-compatible, whether personal files must be preserved, and whether an offline diagnostic medium is available. Those answers determine whether an in-app repair, a reinstall, component repair, recovery, or UEFI test is appropriate.
Step-by-step fixes for hphwdiag.exe
1. Stop and verify an untrusted copy
Do not bypass SmartScreen or Windows Security warnings just to make the program open. Delete or quarantine a copy obtained from an unsolicited source, then download the diagnostic installer from HP’s support pages using the computer’s exact model and supported 64-bit Windows version. If you are unsure whether the existing file is genuine, scan it before any further test.
2. Restart Windows
Choose Start > Power > Restart. A restart clears temporary installer state, releases files held by a stuck service, and reloads registration data. Try HP PC Hardware Diagnostics again after Windows has fully loaded. If the error returns immediately, continue rather than repeatedly restarting.

3. Repair or reset the installed app
Windows 11 exposes repair controls for many packaged applications:

- Find HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
- Restart the application and repeat the test.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and choose Reset.
Repair attempts to correct the app without removing its data; Reset reinstates the app’s state and may remove its local data. Microsoft notes that these options are not available for every application, so the absence of the controls is not itself an error. If the app is not listed at all, skip directly to the HP installer and Windows component checks instead of deleting unrelated files.
4. Uninstall and reinstall the model-appropriate HP package
- Save any diagnostic results or failure IDs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, and choose Uninstall. Complete the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- On HP Support, search by the computer’s exact product or model number and select the package for the installed 64-bit Windows release.
- Prefer the current supported package. HP’s SP173208 listing identifies version 3.1.1.0 for supported 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems as of May 20, 2026.
- Run the installer, restart if requested, and launch the diagnostic from the Start menu.
Do not substitute a package for a different HP model or an unsupported Windows architecture. If reinstalling resolves error 0x800702E4 or a similar launch failure, keep the installer details for future troubleshooting. After installation, check Properties and Digital Signatures on the newly installed executable, confirm that HP is the signer, and run a short diagnostic test before relying on the utility for a critical hardware decision.
5. Repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
If other applications are failing, the HP installation is intact but will not launch, or Windows reports missing or damaged components, repair the component store first:
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to finish. It may take several minutes and can appear to pause. Then, in the same elevated Command Prompt window, run:
sfc /scannowMicrosoft’s sequence places DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the files that SFC may need to replace corrupted protected system files. Restart Windows after both commands complete and test HP PC Hardware Diagnostics again. Running SFC first can leave it without the component files it needs, so keep the order shown above.
6. Roll back a recent Windows change
When the error began directly after an update or system change, use Windows Recovery rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same HP package. Depending on what Windows still allows, choose Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery actions. Options can include uninstalling the latest update or using System Restore to return to an earlier restore point.

Read the date and scope of each option before confirming. A rollback can remove an update or application installed after the selected restore point, while personal documents are generally retained by System Restore. If Windows cannot reach Settings, enter the Windows Recovery environment through the available startup recovery path and select the equivalent recovery option.
7. Reset Windows only after backing up
If component repair and recovery do not restore normal operation, Reset this PC can reinstall Windows. Windows offers a Keep my files choice and a Remove everything choice. The first preserves personal files but removes apps and resets many settings; the second removes personal files as well as apps and settings.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI runs outside the Windows installation. Use the computer’s HP startup-diagnostics key or the on-screen startup menu for the model, then select the hardware test environment. The exact key sequence can vary by HP model; follow the prompts shown at startup.
Run the relevant memory, storage, processor, battery, or system-board test. If a test fails, record the displayed component and the complete 24-digit failure ID. Give that ID to HP support or an authorized repair provider instead of paraphrasing it. If UEFI passes but Windows diagnostics still fails, the evidence points more toward the Windows installation or application package than an immediate hardware failure.

HP also documents a physical HP PC Hardware Diagnostics 4-in-1 USB Key for authorized service partners and mixed HP/Compaq fleets. It is an offline diagnostic medium, not a replacement for the Windows application on a normally functioning personal PC.
