Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →hpbcsiswchooser.exe (also displayed as hpbcsiSWChooser.exe) appears to be a component of HP printer installation software, not a native Windows process. A Hybrid Analysis sample placed it in an HP LaserJet full-solution package and reported that antivirus engines found that sample clean. That result applies only to the analyzed file, however; a filename by itself cannot prove that every copy is genuine or safe.
To judge the copy on your computer, verify its complete path, digital signature, hash, parent process, startup behavior and security-scan results. If those checks match an HP printer package, repair or reinstall that package. If the file is unsigned, sits in an unexpected writable folder, or behaves suspiciously, treat it as a potential threat and investigate before deleting anything.

What hpbcsiswchooser.exe is
The name is associated with HP printer software. The strongest direct evidence comes from an analyzed HP LaserJet full-solution installer that contained hpbcsiSWChooser.exe alongside files including hpbcsiInstaller.exe and hpbcsiSWChooserWPFUI.dll. The sample was a PE32 .NET graphical executable, consistent with a setup or software-selection interface.
“Chooser” likely refers to a component that helps select software or installation options. The available evidence does not identify one universal function, a particular HP printer model, a single installer release, or a fixed list of supported Windows versions. Different HP packages can use different folders and versions, so do not assume that a path or file size found on one computer applies to another.

It is not a Windows system executable. Removing or repairing it affects HP printer software rather than core Windows functions, although an HP printer setup may fail if a required component is missing.
Is hpbcsiSWChooser.exe safe?
There is no safe-or-malicious verdict based on the name alone. The Hybrid Analysis report said antivirus vendors marked one dropped copy as clean, but Malwarebytes and independent Windows-process guidance both stress that zero detections do not authenticate every file with that name. A similarly named HP file has also appeared in a malware-detection report, making the actual path, signer and hash important.
Signs that support a legitimate HP component
- The executable is inside the HP printer software directory created by an installation you recognize.
- Windows shows a valid Authenticode signature from HP Inc. or the expected HP publisher.
- The version and SHA-256 hash match the file delivered by your installed HP printer package.
- It starts from an HP installer, printer utility or another expected HP process rather than an unexplained launcher.
- It has no unusual persistence, repeated recreation or unexpected network activity, and current security software reports no threat.
Warning signs
- The file is in
Downloads, a temporary directory, a user-profile startup folder, or another location you cannot associate with HP software. - The signature is absent, invalid, issued to an unexpected publisher, or Windows cannot verify it.
- The process starts at every logon without an installed HP printer utility that needs it.
- It was delivered by an unsolicited attachment, cracked software package or unofficial EXE/DLL download site.
- The file changes location, reappears after deletion, launches unrelated programs, or creates unexplained network connections.
A suspicious location does not prove malware, and an HP-looking path does not prove authenticity. Use several checks together.

How to verify your copy in Windows
1. Find the actual file, not just the process name
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Windows 11 or 10, select the Details tab. If the process is shown only under Processes, expand it and choose Go to details when available.
- Right-click
hpbcsiswchooser.exeorhpbcsiSWChooser.exeand select Open file location. - Copy the complete path. Also note the file size, modified date and version from Properties before closing the window.
If the process is not running, search the locations shown in startup entries, installed HP folders and any error message. Do not trust a shortcut’s displayed name; inspect the target path.

2. Check the publisher and signature
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is HP Inc. or the publisher expected for the HP package you installed.
- On the General tab, check whether Windows displays an Unblock option. An unblock option indicates that the file carries an Internet-origin marker; it is not, by itself, proof of malware.
An unsigned copy can still be a damaged or older installer component, but it deserves a scan and package comparison before you run it.
3. Record a SHA-256 hash
A hash lets you compare the exact bytes of your file with a known-good copy from the same HP package. Open PowerShell, replace the example path with the path you recorded, and run:
Get-FileHash "C:PathTohpbcsiSWChooser.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Save the resulting hash. Compare it only with a hash obtained from the matching HP printer model and installer release or from an administrator who can verify that package. A different hash means the files differ; it does not by itself establish that either file is malicious.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Inspect the parent process and startup entries
In Task Manager’s Details view, add the Command line and, where available, Parent process columns. An HP setup program or printer utility is more plausible than an unrelated script host or random executable. In Task Manager → Startup apps, disable an entry temporarily if it launches at logon and you do not need it while you investigate. Disabling startup does not delete the file.

Also check Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) for the HP printer package that owns the file. Record the printer model and package name before making changes.
5. Scan the file and the computer
Use an up-to-date antimalware product to scan the executable and then run a full system scan. Microsoft Security Intelligence states: “You should also run a full scan. A full scan might find hidden malware.” A clean result is useful evidence, not a guarantee, so interpret it alongside the path, signature and behavior.
If the file is unsigned, unexpectedly located, or starts in a suspicious way, disconnect the computer from networks when practical before investigating. If a scanner detects malware, follow its quarantine and removal instructions, restart, and scan again. If there is evidence that credentials may have been exposed, change important passwords from a known-clean device.

The correct repair depends on whether the file is a legitimate but damaged HP component or an unwanted file. Capture the exact error text, the printer model and when the message appears (during startup, printing, installation or removal). There is no universal fix established for every version of this executable.

Case 1: The file is verified as part of HP software
- Close HP and printer processes. Save work, exit HP utilities and stop any print job that is safe to cancel.
- Try Windows repair first. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select the HP printer package, choose the three-dot menu and select Advanced options if offered. Use Repair before Reset; labels vary by Windows edition and package. A classic desktop installer may instead provide a Repair option in Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows. Test the printer and check whether the same message returns.
- Reinstall the matching package. If repair fails, uninstall only the HP package associated with the printer, restart, and obtain the installer through HP’s official support channel for the exact printer model and your Windows edition. Do not substitute a similarly named EXE from an unofficial DLL or EXE download site.
- Reconnect the printer after installation. Follow the package’s order for USB connection or network discovery. Installing a generic package for a different model can leave the chooser component mismatched.
Keep the verified file’s path, version and hash before uninstalling so you can compare the replacement. If the error persists after a verified reinstall, contact HP support with the exact model, Windows version, installer release and complete error text.
Case 2: The file is missing or Windows reports “not found”
A missing file commonly means that an HP installation was incomplete, partially removed or quarantined. Do not download a standalone replacement from a file-collection site. Repair or reinstall the complete HP package for the printer model. If security software quarantined the file, review its detection name and restore it only if the file’s path, signature and package source are verified; otherwise leave it quarantined and reinstall from the official package.
Case 3: The error appears at startup but printing works
- Confirm the file’s path and signature before changing anything.
- In Task Manager → Startup apps, disable the HP chooser entry temporarily.
- Restart and observe whether the message disappears and whether printing remains functional.
- If the printer still works and the entry is unnecessary, leave it disabled or remove the associated HP utility through Installed apps. If a printer feature stops working, re-enable it and repair the package instead.
Do not delete the executable merely to suppress a pop-up. Disabling startup is reversible and preserves evidence for diagnosis.
Case 4: The copy is unsigned or in an unexpected folder
- Do not run the file again. Disconnect from networks when practical if it is actively launching or making unexplained connections.
- Run a current full antimalware scan, including the file’s directory and system locations.
- Quarantine or remove the file using the security product’s instructions, then restart and scan again.
- Review Task Manager → Startup apps and installed applications for entries that recreate the file. Remove only items you can identify confidently.
- After cleanup, change important passwords from a known-clean device if the investigation indicates possible credential theft.
Do not manually replace a suspicious executable with a file copied from another computer. If Windows or the printer package still reports an error after cleanup, reinstall the legitimate HP software from its official support channel.

Can you delete hpbcsiswchooser.exe?
Deleting it manually is usually the wrong first step. If it belongs to an HP printer package, deletion can break installation, maintenance or printer features and leave an incomplete uninstall record. Use the package’s uninstall or repair option instead.
Manual removal is reasonable only after a security product identifies the file as malicious or after you have confirmed that it is an orphaned, unwanted copy. Record the path and hash first, stop the associated process, quarantine or remove it with security software, and then remove the parent application or startup entry that recreates it. If Windows says the file is in use, restart into the security product’s remediation environment rather than forcing deletion of an unknown process.
What the main checks tell you
| Check | More consistent with a legitimate HP component | Needs further investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Recognized HP printer-program directory | Downloads, temporary or user-writable startup folder |
| Signature | Valid signature from HP Inc. or the expected HP publisher | Unsigned, invalid or unexpected signer |
| Hash/version | Matches the exact installed printer package | Unknown or differs from the verified package |
| Parent process | HP installer or printer utility | Unexplained launcher, script host or random application |
| Behavior | Normal setup activity and no suspicious persistence | Unexpected network activity, repeated recreation or unrelated launches |
| Scan result | No detection, interpreted with the other checks | Detection, quarantine or repeated alerts |
No single row proves safety. A valid signature can be attached to a legitimate file that is outdated or compromised elsewhere, while an unsigned old installer can be benign but unsupported. The combination of provenance, signature, hash, context and behavior is what makes the decision defensible.
When to contact HP or a security professional
- The exact printer model and package are unknown, but the error prevents printing or installation.
- A verified reinstall reproduces the same message.
- The file has a valid-looking signature but unusual behavior or persistence.
- Security software detects multiple related files, the file returns after removal, or accounts show signs of unauthorized access.
- You need to preserve evidence for an employer, school or incident-response team.
Provide the complete error text, Windows edition and build, printer model, HP package version, file path, signer result, SHA-256 hash and the time the problem occurs. Avoid emailing the executable itself unless a trusted support or security team specifically requests it through a secure process.
