hoststorageservice.exe is usually the Broadcom CV Host Component used by Dell ControlVault or Broadcom USH hardware. It is not a core Windows executable. The normal copy is under C:Program FilesBroadcom CorporationBroadcom USH Host ComponentsCVbinhoststorageservice.exe and runs as the Credential Vault Host Storage service.
Do not judge the file by its name alone. Confirm its location, Broadcom digital signature, service registration and a current malware-scan result before repairing, disabling or removing it. The steps below show how to verify the file, repair Windows and storage problems, investigate recurring crashes, and safely remove the parent package when you no longer need ControlVault features.

What hoststorageservice.exe does
HostStorageService.exe is generally distributed as part of Broadcom CV Host Component 1.0, also seen in Dell ControlVault and Broadcom USH Host Components installations. The component supports credential-vault functions associated with security hardware and authentication. SystemLookup associates it with TPM, smart-card and biometric authentication functions, while the related Windows service stores CV objects on the hard drive.

The service is registered as Credential Vault Host Storage. Its service description is commonly shown as “Host Storage Service for Persisting CV Objects into Hard drive,” with Broadcom Corporation listed as publisher. Because it belongs to a vendor package, Windows can continue to run normally without it on some PCs, but removing or disabling it may affect fingerprint readers, smart-card readers, TPM-linked authentication or other Dell security features.

Normal installation location
The commonly reported path is:
C:Program FilesBroadcom CorporationBroadcom USH Host ComponentsCVbinhoststorageservice.exe
The exact drive letter can differ if Windows is installed somewhere other than the usual system drive, but the directory should remain inside the Broadcom USH Host ComponentsCVbin tree under Program Files. A file with the same name in a user profile, a temporary folder, the Windows directory or an unrelated application folder deserves investigation rather than automatic deletion.
Is hoststorageservice.exe safe?
A correctly installed copy is usually legitimate, but no filename can prove that a file is safe. Malware can use a familiar name, copy a legitimate filename or replace a vendor file. Treat the following checks as a single verification process.

HerdProtect reported a 0/68 detection result for one identified sample. That result applies only to that file hash and the scan date; it does not certify every executable named hoststorageservice.exe.
Verify the path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Details tab, find
hoststorageservice.exe. If it is not running, continue with the service check below. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Confirm that File Explorer opens the Broadcom USH Host ComponentsCVbin folder under
Program Files. If several copies exist, record every path.
Check the signature and version
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab. Select the Broadcom signature, choose Details and verify that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Open the Details tab and record the product name, file version and original filename. Save the SHA-256 hash if you need to compare the file with an administrator or security team; do not replace the file merely because its version differs from another computer.
Confirm the service
- Press Win+R, type
services.mscand press Enter. - Locate Credential Vault Host Storage.
- Open its properties and check the executable path shown under Path to executable. It should point to the same verified Broadcom file.
- Note whether the service is running and whether its startup type is configured by the vendor. Do not change the startup type until you know which authentication features your PC uses.
Common hoststorageservice.exe error situations
Errors may appear as an application crash, a service that stops immediately, a startup warning, a message that the file cannot be found, or a blue-screen or stop-code event that occurs while credential hardware is active. The message alone does not identify the cause. Typical possibilities include a damaged vendor installation, a missing dependency, Windows file corruption, storage errors, an outdated BIOS or firmware layer, a faulty ControlVault device or malicious replacement of the executable.
- “File not found” or missing-entry errors: the service registration remains after the executable was removed, quarantined or moved.
- Repeated application crashes: the Broadcom component, its driver stack, Windows system files or related hardware may be damaged.
- Stop codes or boot problems: investigate Safe Mode, Device Manager, BIOS or firmware, hardware diagnostics and malware before changing files.
- Copy, move, rename or delete failures: Windows file and folder permissions or the file system may be at fault rather than the executable itself.
Manual fixes, in the safest order
1. Preserve evidence and scan before changing anything
- Write down the complete path, the service name, the file version and the time the error occurred.
- Do not download a replacement EXE from an unofficial DLL or EXE-download site. A replacement can be tampered with, incompatible with your vendor package or missing required registration.
- Run a full scan with a current, reputable antivirus product. Allow the security software to quarantine or isolate a confirmed threat, then follow its recovery instructions. If the scan flags the file, do not restore it merely to make the service start.
- If the path, signature or service registration is inconsistent, disconnect the PC from untrusted networks while you investigate and obtain help from your organization’s administrator or the hardware vendor.
2. Use the File and Folder Troubleshooter for file-operation failures
When the specific symptom is an inability to copy, move, rename or delete files and folders, use Microsoft’s File and Folder Troubleshooter. Select the option that matches the operation that failed and let it apply the suggested repair. Reboot and retry the operation. This tool addresses Windows file and folder handling; it does not validate an executable’s publisher or remove malware.

3. Test in Safe Mode and inspect hardware context
- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 or the corresponding recovery settings on Windows 10.
- Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now. At the recovery menu select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose Safe Mode.
- In Safe Mode, check whether the crash or startup message still occurs. A problem that disappears there is more likely to involve a startup service, driver or third-party interaction.
- Open Device Manager and inspect entries for security devices, biometric readers, smart-card readers, USB devices and system devices. Look for warning icons and review each device’s driver details.
- Install current BIOS or firmware and hardware diagnostics supplied for your exact computer model. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep the PC connected to reliable power during firmware updates.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent fix. Do not remove the executable simply because it is absent or inactive there.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Check the drive with CHKDSK
- Right-click the Start button and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
chkdsk /scan
This performs an online scan of the Windows volume. Read the result carefully. If Windows reports errors that require an offline repair, save your work and follow the prompt to schedule the repair for the next restart. Back up important files before any repair when the drive shows signs of failure.
5. Repair Windows system files and the component store
- In the same elevated Terminal or Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears paused for several minutes.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and check the service again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies system files; System File Checker then checks and replaces protected files. These commands do not reinstall Broadcom’s vendor component, so a continuing vendor-specific crash may still require package repair or removal.

6. Review updates, drivers and recent changes
- Open Settings > Windows Update, install available quality and security updates, and restart.
- In Device Manager, review the security and system devices related to ControlVault or Broadcom USH. Use the device’s Properties > Driver tab to note the provider, date and version.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver or firmware change, use the device’s documented rollback option or reinstall the exact package for your computer model. Avoid mixing packages from different models.
- Check whether the error began after a Windows upgrade, a security-software quarantine or a restore operation. That timeline helps determine whether the package is missing, blocked or incompatible.
7. Repair or remove the parent package
If the file is verified as part of an unused Dell ControlVault or Broadcom USH Host Components installation, remove the parent package rather than deleting only hoststorageservice.exe.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. On older interfaces, open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Find the Dell ControlVault, Broadcom USH Host Components or similarly named vendor entry.
- Choose Uninstall or Change. If the installer offers a repair option, try repair first when you still use the related fingerprint, smart-card, TPM or biometric feature.
- Restart Windows and verify that the unwanted service entry is gone and that the hardware features you need still work.
Deleting the EXE directly can leave a broken service registration, produce a missing-file error at startup or disable credential-related hardware. If no package is listed but the service remains, do not delete registry entries blindly; obtain the exact vendor removal procedure or professional assistance.

Should you disable Credential Vault Host Storage?
Disable it only when you have confirmed that your PC does not use the associated ControlVault or Broadcom USH functions and you have a recovery plan. A safer diagnostic test is to record the current startup setting, stop the service temporarily from its Services properties, restart and test the affected hardware. If fingerprint, smart-card, biometric or other credential functions fail, restore the original setting and reinstall or repair the vendor package.

Stopping the service is not a malware-removal method. If the executable is in an unexpected location or has an invalid signature, scan and isolate the computer instead of merely disabling the service.
When to seek specialist help
- The file is unsigned, has a non-Broadcom publisher or appears in several unexpected locations.
- A security scan detects the file or Windows cannot complete the scan.
- CHKDSK reports recurring errors, the drive is unusually slow or files become unreadable.
- Blue screens continue after Safe Mode testing, system-file repair and current firmware.
- The computer is managed by an employer or school, or it uses smart cards or other authentication that you cannot risk disabling.
Provide the helper with the exact path, signature result, service name, file version or hash, scan result, recent changes and the commands’ output. Do not email an executable copy unless your security team specifically requests it through a safe process.
Quick Recap
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems; it can also reduce CPU, RAM and disk load through settings tweaks, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Practical decision checklist
- Correct path, valid Broadcom signature, matching service and clean scan: keep the component and troubleshoot Windows, storage, drivers and firmware.
- Correct path but repeated crashes: test Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, update firmware and run CHKDSK, DISM and SFC.
- Unused package and no dependent hardware: uninstall the parent ControlVault or Broadcom USH package, then restart.
- Unexpected path or failed signature: treat the file as suspicious, scan and obtain help; do not download a replacement or delete evidence.
