Short answer: him.exe is only a filename, not a unique Windows component. Files with that name have appeared in legitimate software and in malware samples, so the name alone cannot tell you whether your copy is safe. Check its complete path, publisher, digital signature, SHA-256 hash, antivirus results, and behavior before deleting it, allowing it, or trying to replace it.
Why the name him.exe is not enough
Windows identifies executable files primarily by their path and contents, not by a globally unique filename. Different developers can create unrelated programs called him.exe. A game, utility, installer, startup helper, or malicious program could all use the same name.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Search evidence shows legitimate-looking uses of HIM.exe, including an executable associated with a Steam game and references in HIM software manuals. That does not make every file with the name trustworthy. It only shows why a blanket rule such as “all him.exe files are viruses” or “him.exe is a Windows file” is unsafe.
No authoritative statistic establishes how common him.exe infections or errors are. Treat each file as a separate case and make your decision from evidence tied to that exact file.

What the malware evidence actually shows
| Evidence | What was observed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ANY.RUN sandbox report | A sample at C:UsersadminAppDataLocalTemphim.exe was identified as Azorult, ran from a temporary directory, and contacted a command-and-control domain. |
This is strong evidence that this analyzed sample was malicious. It is not proof that every file named him.exe is malicious. |
| FreeFixer sample | The cited file had no vendor or version information, no digital signature, and was detected by 43 of 55 antivirus engines. | The detection count applies to that sample only. An unsigned, unidentified executable with broad detections should be treated as high risk. |
| HPE community discussion from 2005 | A HijackThis log included C:WINDOWSSystem32him.exe as an autorun entry during an adware-removal case. |
This is old, anecdotal evidence. It does not classify current files or establish that a System32 copy is safe. |
| Legitimate software references | Search results include a Steam game executable and HIM software documentation using the name. | A known product, expected installation folder, valid signature, and clean scan can materially change the assessment. |
The practical lesson is to compare several independent signals instead of relying on one label. Path, signature, hash, reputation, intended software, startup behavior, and network activity should point in the same direction before you trust a file.
How to compare two files that share the name
| Check | Lower-risk indication | Warning indication |
|---|---|---|
| Path | Inside the expected folder for software you installed | Temp, Downloads, or an unexplained user-profile folder |
| Publisher and signature | Identifiable publisher and a valid signature matching that publisher | No publisher, no product details, or an invalid or absent signature |
| Hash and scanner results | Hash matches the vendor’s known release and scans clean | Broad multi-engine detections or a hash associated with malware |
| Installation history | You intentionally installed the related game, utility, or application | The file appeared without your consent or after an untrusted download |
| Runtime behavior | Runs only with the expected application and has explainable activity | Starts at sign-in, recreates itself, or contacts unexplained domains |
| Windows Security status | No alert, or a documented false positive confirmed by the publisher | Malware or PUA detection that returns after removal |
How to verify your exact him.exe file
Do not approve, delete, or replace the file until you know which copy Windows is referring to. If an error appears but no process is running, use the startup and application checks later in this guide to find the entry that still points to it.
1. Record the complete path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes or Details tab, find
him.exeif it is running. - Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Copy the complete path, including the drive letter and filename, into your notes.
A path under a program’s known installation directory is easier to explain than a random copy in a user profile. A location such as AppDataLocalTemp, Downloads, or an unexpected folder deserves additional scrutiny, especially when the file appeared without your consent. A familiar-looking folder is not proof of safety either; malware can be placed in system-looking locations.
2. Inspect publisher and signature information
- In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Properties.
- On Details, note the product name, description, company, file version, and copyright fields.
- If a Digital Signatures tab is present, select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
An absent signature is not automatic proof of malware; some legitimate programs are unsigned. However, an unsigned file with no publisher or product information is a substantially higher-risk combination when it is also in a temporary or download directory. A signature is evidence about who signed the file, not a guarantee that the program is desirable or free of vulnerabilities. Make sure the signer makes sense for the application you intended to install.
3. Calculate a SHA-256 hash
A hash lets you compare the exact bytes of your file with reports or scans without relying on its name. Open PowerShell and run this command, replacing the path with the one you recorded:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathhim.exe"
Save the resulting SHA-256 value with the path, signature status, and date. Submit the file or its hash to a reputable multi-engine scanner or scan it with Windows Security. Uploading a file can disclose its contents, so do not submit confidential documents or proprietary software to a public service without authorization. A hash mismatch means you have a different build or a changed file; it does not, by itself, prove that either file is malicious.

4. Check whether you installed the related software
Ask whether the file belongs to an application, game, driver package, or utility you intentionally installed. Compare the path with that product’s normal installation directory and check the product’s own uninstaller. A known publisher, expected folder, valid signature, and clean scan are materially different from an unexplained executable that appeared in a temporary directory.
If you cannot connect the file to software you recognize, do not “test” it by launching it. Preserve the path and hash, scan it, and investigate the startup entry or parent application that invokes it.
5. Look for persistence and unexpected activity
Note whether the process launches at sign-in, recreates itself after removal, or makes network connections while no related application is open. Also record whether Windows Security labels it as malware, a potentially unwanted app (PUA), or a possible false positive. These observations help distinguish a legitimate program from a file trying to remain active without a clear reason. The ANY.RUN sample’s command-and-control connection is an example of why unexplained network behavior matters.
Use Microsoft Defender before manual deletion
Microsoft advises: “Download apps only from trusted sources, such as Microsoft Store, and be thoughtful about which apps you install.” Windows Security is built into supported Windows editions and should be your first cleanup and verification tool. You do not need to buy a separate security product merely to perform these checks.
Update security intelligence
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Check for updates.
Updating first gives the scanner the latest available detection information for the scan you are about to run.

Apply the result in Protection history
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
- Open the entry for
him.exeand read the detected name, file path, and classification. - If the item is unwanted or malicious, choose the offered action to Quarantine or Remove it.
Microsoft explains that a detected potentially unwanted app remains blocked until you select an action. Do not restore or allow the file merely because an application displays an error after quarantine; first identify the parent application and verify that the detection is a false positive. Keep the detection name and path in your notes in case you need help from Microsoft, the publisher, or IT.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence is suspected
If the alert returns after removal, the process starts before normal Windows tools load, or you suspect rootkit-style persistence, run Microsoft Defender Offline from the scan options. Windows restarts into a recovery environment and scans outside the normal Windows session, where some persistent malware has less opportunity to hide. Save open work before starting because the computer will restart.
Do not create an exclusion to silence the warning
Microsoft warns that an exclusion prevents Defender from checking the excluded file or process during real-time scanning and can leave the device vulnerable. An exclusion is not a repair. If a false positive is plausible, submit the file to Microsoft for analysis and obtain a corrected application update from the legitimate publisher instead of disabling protection.

Fix a him.exe startup or missing-file error
A message such as “him.exe was not found,” “cannot start him.exe,” or “the specified module could not be found” often means that Windows is trying to launch a program whose file was quarantined, removed, or moved. The message identifies a broken reference, not necessarily the original cause. A missing-file dialog can therefore appear after a successful cleanup.
1. Capture the exact message
Write down the full text, when it appears, and whether it occurs at sign-in, when opening a specific application, or during shutdown. If the dialog names a parent product, use that name in the next steps. Do not download a replacement executable based only on the filename.
2. Inspect Startup apps
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and open Startup apps in Task Manager.
- Look for an entry that refers to
him.exeor to an application you no longer recognize. - Check its Startup impact and publisher columns, then note the command or location when available.
If the entry belongs to an unwanted or broken program, disable it temporarily while you investigate. Disabling startup does not remove the file; it stops that launch trigger so you can work safely. If the entry is clearly part of software you still use, prefer repairing or updating that software instead of deleting its executable.

3. Identify and remove the parent application
- Open Settings → Apps and review Installed apps (the wording can vary by Windows edition).
- Find the application associated with the startup entry or error.
- If you do not recognize or no longer need it, uninstall it using Windows’ normal uninstall control.
For a legitimate application that you still need, use its official publisher’s installer or built-in repair option. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than copying a standalone him.exe from an EXE or DLL download site, because the parent program may require additional files, registry entries, and a particular version. Download only from the publisher you can verify, not from a generic file repository.

Run another Windows Security scan after the parent application is removed or reinstalled. If the same startup reference remains, revisit Startup apps and the relevant application’s own settings. Preserve the original path and hash in your notes in case Microsoft, the software publisher, or your organization’s support team needs them. If reinstalling recreates a detection, stop and investigate instead of repeatedly restoring the file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you delete him.exe?
| Situation | Safer action |
|---|---|
| Windows Security detects malware or a PUA | Use Protection history to quarantine or remove it, then run the recommended scan. Do not restore it simply to stop an error. |
| The file is in Temp or Downloads, unsigned, unidentified, and not tied to software you installed | Keep the device protected, preserve the path and hash, scan it, and remove the associated startup or parent application after the scan. |
| The file belongs to a known application, has a valid expected signature, and scans clean | Do not delete it directly. Repair, update, or uninstall the parent application through its official installer. |
| You cannot determine what launches it | Do not guess. Disable the suspicious startup entry, run Defender Offline if needed, and seek trusted technical or organizational support. |
Deleting an executable without removing the entry that calls it can leave repeated “file missing” messages. Conversely, deleting a legitimate file can break the application that installed it. Quarantine through Windows Security and removal of the parent program are preferable to arbitrary manual deletion.
Should you allow him.exe through Windows Defender?
Not based on the filename or an error message. Allowing a file or creating an exclusion reduces the protection that Defender provides. Only consider a false-positive path after you have verified the publisher, signature, installation directory, hash, intended software, and scan results, and after the file has been submitted to Microsoft or confirmed by the legitimate publisher. If the evidence remains mixed, leave the file blocked and replace or reinstall the parent application from its official source.
What to do if Windows is unstable or compromise is suspected
- Disconnect the computer from networks while preserving the information needed for diagnosis, especially if the process is making unexplained connections.
- Do not sign in to sensitive accounts on the affected device until scans are complete.
- Run Microsoft Defender Offline and follow the action shown in Protection history.
- Use a trusted support channel if the detection returns, security controls are disabled, or the system cannot complete a scan.
- On a work or school computer, contact IT before deleting startup entries, clearing security settings, or changing exclusions. Organization policies and evidence-preservation requirements may apply.
Do you need to buy a cleanup product?
For a suspected him.exe file, the essential steps—updating definitions, running a full scan, using Defender Offline, and applying Protection history actions—are provided by Windows Security. No physical product or paid download is required for that workflow. A third-party repair utility may help with unrelated application problems, but it does not replace malware scanning, signature verification, or the publisher’s installer. Check any product’s current features, price, trial terms, and claims before installing it, and do not use a cleaner to justify allowing a detected executable.

Prevent similar errors and detections
- Install applications only from the Microsoft Store or the software publisher’s official distribution channel.
- Keep Windows and Windows Security security intelligence up to date.
- Read installer screens carefully and decline unrelated bundled software.
- Keep a note of unusual filenames, paths, hashes, and detection names instead of relying on memory.
- Do not download replacement EXE or DLL files from generic file repositories.
- Review Startup apps after installing software and remove entries for programs you no longer use.
- Keep the original installer or vendor support information for software you intentionally installed, so a missing-file error can be repaired from a known source.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is him.exe a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Some him.exe files are associated with legitimate software, while documented samples were malicious. Check the exact path, publisher, signature, SHA-256 hash, scan results, and behavior.
Best Value
Can I delete him.exe?
Do not delete it solely because of its name. Quarantine or remove a detection through Windows Security; for a clean file, repair or uninstall its parent application instead.
Why does Windows say him.exe is missing?
The application or startup entry may still point to a file that Windows Security quarantined, or that was deleted or moved. Identify the requesting program in Startup apps, Installed apps, or the relevant event or log entry.

Not until the publisher, signature, path, hash, intended software, and scan results support a false positive. An exclusion stops Defender from checking that file and can leave the device vulnerable.
Is a him.exe file in System32 safe?
No location proves safety. A 2005 adware-removal discussion mentioned a System32 autorun entry, so verify the current file rather than trusting the folder name.
What if him.exe is in AppData\Local\Temp or Downloads?
Those locations deserve heightened scrutiny, especially with no publisher or signature. Preserve the path and hash, scan with updated Defender, and investigate the startup or parent application.
How do I check a him.exe hash?
In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:\full\path\him.exe". Record the value and compare that exact file with reputable scanner results.
Will reinstalling fix a him.exe error?
Reinstall the complete parent application only from its official publisher after checking that the file is legitimate or removing the unwanted program. Never download a standalone replacement executable from a generic repository.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: him.exe is not a unique Windows component. Verify the exact path, publisher, signature, SHA-256 hash, intended software, and runtime behavior. Use updated Microsoft Defender, a full scan, and Defender Offline when needed; quarantine detections through Protection history; and repair or remove the parent application instead of downloading a replacement file or creating an exclusion.
