help-browser.exe is associated in filename-specific references with the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), where it appears as a plug-in executable. It is not Microsoft’s WinHlp32.exe. The filename alone cannot prove that a copy is safe: check its full path, parent process, publisher and digital signature, then scan unexpected copies with Microsoft Defender.
What help-browser.exe does
The name help-browser.exe is linked by third-party process references to GIMP. One reference describes it as a GNU Image Manipulation Program plug-in associated with GIMP 2.10.12 and located under a GIMP plug-ins directory. Another lists C:Program FilesGIMP 2libgimp2.0plug-ins among common paths and identifies gimp-2.8.exe as a common parent process. These references are useful clues, not an authoritative Microsoft or GIMP signature database, so treat the path and provenance as the deciding evidence.

When GIMP starts a plug-in, Windows may show the executable in Task Manager, an error dialog or a crash report. A missing or damaged copy can therefore look like a Windows problem even though the underlying fault is usually the GIMP installation. The safest repair is to repair or reinstall GIMP from its official distribution rather than copy a single executable from a file-sharing or “DLL/EXE download” site.

Similar names cause many incorrect fixes. Microsoft’s WinHlp32.exe is the Windows Help component used to display legacy 32-bit .hlp files on supported Windows releases. Microsoft distributes that component through its Download Center. help-browser.exe, by contrast, is the filename associated with a GIMP plug-in in the available process references.

If an error mentions a missing .hlp viewer, it is probably asking for WinHlp32.exe, not help-browser.exe. Installing or copying the wrong file will not repair the application that generated the error.
Can you trust help-browser.exe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer based only on the filename. A copy inside a genuine GIMP directory and launched by GIMP is consistent with the available evidence. A copy in a temporary folder, a user-download folder, a Windows system directory, or another location unrelated to GIMP needs investigation. The same is true when the file has no publisher information, an invalid signature, an unexpected parent process, or a Microsoft Defender detection.
Check the complete path
- When the error dialog identifies a location, copy the entire path, including the drive letter and every folder.
- For a running process, open Task Manager, locate the process, right-click it and choose the option to open its file location. If the process is hidden under GIMP, expand the GIMP entry first.
- Compare the result with the folder where GIMP is actually installed. A path beneath the GIMP installation is more plausible than a copy in
%Temp%,Downloads, a browser cache or an unrelated system folder.
Do not judge a file by a shortened path shown in a notification. Malware and unwanted software can use familiar names in unrelated directories, while a legitimate plug-in can be installed on a drive other than C:.

- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- On the General tab, note the location and whether Windows reports that the file came from another computer.
- On Details, review the product, description, original filename and publisher fields. Missing fields do not prove malware, but they remove useful provenance.
- On Digital Signatures, if the tab is present, inspect the signer and use View Certificate to check whether Windows reports the signature as valid. An absent or invalid signature is a reason to investigate, not an automatic verdict.
Do not treat a hash posted on an unofficial download page or a claim that a file is “100% clean” as a substitute for knowing where the file came from. Provenance, path, process behavior and a current security scan provide more meaningful context.

Identify the parent process
Task Manager can show whether GIMP launched the executable. A GIMP parent process is consistent with the plug-in explanation. A browser, script host, document viewer or an unknown process launching a copy from a temporary directory is not consistent with that normal use and should be handled as suspicious until scanned.
Scan the file and its folder
Use the context menu in File Explorer to scan the file or its containing folder with Microsoft Defender. On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases, you can also open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, select Scan options and run a Full scan. A full scan checks more of the system than a quick, on-demand check.
If the copy keeps returning, launches at startup, or is associated with other unwanted behavior, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan in the same area. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can make it harder for persistent unwanted software to hide. Save work and close applications before starting an Offline scan.
Fix a missing or broken help-browser.exe safely
Use the branch that matches what you found. The objective is to restore the parent application from a trusted installer, not to obtain a loose executable.

1. Record the error and path
Take a screenshot or write down the exact wording, the application named in the dialog, and the full path. “The code execution cannot proceed because help-browser.exe was not found” points to a missing file, while an access-denied, side-by-side or crash message may indicate a damaged installation or a security action. Keeping the original path prevents you from repairing the wrong program.
2. Close GIMP and restart Windows
Exit GIMP and any plug-in process shown in Task Manager. Restart Windows once, then launch GIMP again. A locked or incompletely updated plug-in can produce a one-time error; a recurring message needs the repair steps below. Do not repeatedly launch an executable directly from an error dialog or from a search result.
3. Repair or reinstall GIMP from its official installer
- Download the GIMP installer only from the official GIMP distribution channel. Do not use a page offering an isolated
help-browser.exedownload. - Close GIMP and any installer or updater already running.
- Use Windows Settings to remove the existing GIMP installation if the installer cannot repair it: open Apps, then Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows), select GIMP and choose Uninstall.
- Run the official installer and allow it to place the plug-ins in the application’s own directory.
- Restart Windows after installation and test GIMP by opening the workflow that previously produced the error.
Some GIMP installers may offer a repair or reinstall path instead of requiring a separate uninstall. Use that supported option when it is available. Keep personal project files and exported images in a separate location; the repair concerns the application files, not your artwork.

Do not move a suspicious copy into the GIMP folder to make the error disappear. If the path is unrelated to GIMP, the parent process is unexpected, or Defender reports a detection, allow Defender to quarantine the item. Then run a Full scan. For a persistent or repeatedly recreated file, run Microsoft Defender Offline as well. Reinstall GIMP only from its official source after the security checks have completed.

5. Restore only through a trusted application reinstall
If Defender quarantined a legitimate GIMP plug-in, do not restore an isolated executable downloaded elsewhere. Confirm that the alert refers to the copy in the GIMP directory, update Defender definitions, and reinstall GIMP from the official installer. This replaces the application’s files as a set and gives you a fresh provenance trail.

“help-browser.exe was not found” when GIMP starts
Confirm the path in the message and check whether the file is absent from GIMP’s plug-ins directory. If it is absent and no security product removed it, reinstall GIMP. If Defender quarantined it, complete the scan and reinstall rather than copying a replacement. A missing plug-in file is not repaired by installing WinHlp32.exe.
GIMP crashes after launching the plug-in
Check whether GIMP, rather than another process, launched the executable. Record whether the crash occurs every time or only with one operation. A repair or clean reinstall from the official installer is the supported manual remedy in this situation. If a new copy appears outside the GIMP directory, stop troubleshooting the crash as an ordinary application fault and perform the security checks described above.
Windows reports that the publisher cannot be verified
Unsigned or invalidly signed files deserve closer scrutiny, especially when their location and parent process are also unexpected. A missing signature alone does not identify malware, but it means you should not grant the file additional trust. Scan it with Defender and obtain the application again from the official GIMP installer.
A browser page displays an error and asks you to call
Close the browser tab or window and do not call the number. Microsoft states: “Microsoft’s error and warning messages never include phone numbers.” A web page that uses a help-browser.exe name, an alarming warning and a support number is not evidence that Windows has diagnosed a problem. Do not install a remote-access tool or give the caller access to your PC.
The problem concerns a legacy .hlp file
Identify the filename in the error. If it asks for the Windows Help viewer for a 32-bit .hlp file, research the supported WinHlp32.exe package for your Windows release through Microsoft. That is a separate component with a separate purpose. Installing it will not fix a GIMP plug-in error, and installing GIMP will not add the Windows Help viewer.
Choosing the right repair path

What not to do
- Do not download
help-browser.exefrom a file mirror and overwrite the copy in GIMP. - Do not replace it with
WinHlp32.exe; the names refer to different programs. - Do not ignore a copy found in a temporary or user-download directory simply because the filename looks familiar.
- Do not restore a Defender-detected file before understanding its path, parent process and detection.
- Do not call a phone number shown in a browser warning claiming to be a Microsoft error message.
- Do not assume a clean result from one scan proves the file’s origin; retain the path and installation source as part of your assessment.
Preventing the error from returning
- Install GIMP and other applications from their official vendor sites or the Microsoft Store when an application is offered there.
- Keep the installer used for GIMP identifiable so you can repair the application without searching for individual executable files.
- When an error appears, record the complete path before deleting or moving anything.
- Keep Microsoft Defender enabled and allow its definitions to update before running a Full or Offline scan.
- Separate genuine application dialogs from browser pages. A web page can imitate a system warning, but it cannot establish that a local executable is legitimate.

Treat help-browser.exe as a context-dependent GIMP plug-in name, not as proof of a Microsoft component or proof of safety. Verify the full path, parent process, properties and signature; scan unexpected copies with Microsoft Defender; and repair the parent GIMP installation from its official installer. Use Microsoft’s separate WinHlp32.exe component only for legacy 32-bit Help files, and never trust a browser warning that asks you to call a phone number.
