A copy downloaded from NirSoft, whose checksum matches the publisher’s value and which passes a current security scan, is the strongest safety case. The filename alone proves nothing: malware can be renamed.
Windows launch failures usually result from an incomplete or altered download, antivirus or firewall blocking, a damaged archive, an unavailable drive, or permissions on the file’s location. The sequence below verifies the copy first, then repairs the common access and blocking conditions without broadly disabling security.

What hashmyfiles.exe does
HashMyFiles is NirSoft’s freeware checksum utility. It reads a file or folder and calculates one or more hash values that can be compared with values published by a software vendor. This lets you detect an altered, corrupted or incomplete download before installing or opening it.

The official page currently identifies HashMyFiles version 2.51 and copyright 2007–2026. NirSoft lists support for Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, 10 and 11. On a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer, the program is therefore a legacy-compatible, self-contained utility rather than a service that must be installed.

Is hashmyfiles.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer based solely on the name. The legitimate file belongs to NirSoft’s HashMyFiles freeware, but an attacker can rename any malicious executable to hashmyfiles.exe. Treat the copy’s provenance and integrity as the deciding evidence.
Signals that support a legitimate copy
- You downloaded the ZIP or executable from NirSoft’s official HashMyFiles page, not from a re-upload or an unsolicited attachment.
- The file’s MD5, SHA1 or SHA-256 value matches the corresponding value NirSoft publishes for that release, when a matching release hash is listed.
- Your current antivirus or endpoint-security scan finds no threat.
- The archive and executable have a sensible download time and have not been unexpectedly replaced or modified.
NirSoft explains that HashMyFiles can calculate hashes for downloaded tools so you can compare them with publisher-provided values. That workflow is useful, but it does not make an unknown copy trustworthy by itself: verify HashMyFiles before using it to verify anything else.
What the publisher’s disclaimer means
NirSoft’s disclaimer says: “The software is provided ‘AS IS’ without any warranty or implied warranties.” This is a warranty limitation, not evidence that the file is malicious. It means you should keep normal backups and security controls and should not treat the utility as guaranteed software.

Why Windows may block or fail to open it
NirSoft’s FAQ specifically describes antivirus or firewall software automatically blocking downloaded executables and cites the message “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.” A block can occur even when the program itself is legitimate, because reputation and policy systems judge the download, location or behavior rather than your intent.
Other causes are practical inferences from the same access and download behavior. Confirm them against the exact message and the location of your copy:

- Incomplete or altered download: a truncated ZIP or changed executable will not match the publisher’s checksum.
- Quarantine: security software may have moved or removed the executable, leaving a shortcut or extraction folder that points to nothing.
- Restricted location: the account may not have permission to run files from a protected folder, network share or another user’s profile.
- Unavailable media: a disconnected USB drive, mapped share or failing disk can make the path inaccessible.
- Damaged archive: extraction can fail or produce a corrupt executable if the ZIP is damaged.
- Enterprise policy: an administrator may prohibit downloaded or portable executables regardless of their source.
Safety checks before you try a fix
- Do not run an unknown copy. If the file arrived by email, an unexpected download or a third-party mirror, close the prompt and set it aside.
- Record its location and name. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties and note the full path, size and modification date. Keep the original ZIP or executable for review rather than repeatedly overwriting it.
- Check Protection history. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Look for an entry naming the file, its archive or its containing folder. On a managed computer, also check with your security administrator; a local exclusion may violate policy.
- Do not broadly disable protection. If a warning identifies a threat or your organization blocked the file, stop and ask the administrator. A temporary, narrowly scoped review is safer than turning off antivirus or firewall protection system-wide.
How to fix hashmyfiles.exe errors on Windows
Follow these steps in order. The early steps establish whether the copy is genuine; later steps address extraction, path and permission problems.
1. Remove the questionable copy
Delete the executable and its extracted folder if the source is unknown, the checksum is wrong, or security software quarantined it. Emptying the Recycle Bin is optional until you have finished documenting the incident. Do not restore a quarantined item merely to see whether it opens.

2. Download a fresh copy from NirSoft
Use NirSoft’s official HashMyFiles page and choose the release appropriate for your Windows system. Save the original ZIP or executable to a local folder such as Downloads or Desktop. Avoid download managers, repackaged installers and “cracked” bundles; HashMyFiles is designed to run without an installer.
3. Preserve the archive and inspect it
Keep the downloaded ZIP unchanged so its source, timestamp and checksum can be reviewed. In File Explorer, open the ZIP and check that it contains the expected HashMyFiles executable rather than a nested installer, script or unrelated program. If Windows reports that the archive is invalid, download it again instead of extracting repeatedly.
4. Compare a published checksum
When NirSoft lists a hash for the matching release, calculate the same algorithm on your downloaded file and compare every character. You can use Windows’ built-in command-line tools from a terminal opened in the file’s folder:

Do not run the file simply because its name is correct; delete it, investigate the source or network path, and download again. If no matching publisher value is listed for your release, rely on the official source, a current security scan and your organization’s policy rather than inventing a pass result.
5. Scan the archive and executable
Scan both the ZIP and the extracted executable with your current endpoint-security product. A clean result reduces risk but is not a guarantee, especially for a newly modified file. If a detection appears, leave the item quarantined and follow the product’s or your administrator’s incident process.
6. Check quarantine and firewall records
Review antivirus history and any firewall or application-control log for the exact path. If the event says the file was blocked, read the reason and rule name. On a personal PC, restore or allow a file only after its source and checksum are established and only through the security product’s normal per-file workflow. On a work or school PC, request an administrator review instead of creating your own exception.
7. Extract to a simple local path
Right-click the verified ZIP, choose Extract All, and select a local folder such as C:Users<your-account>DownloadsHashMyFiles. Avoid running directly from a preview window, a cloud-only placeholder, a disconnected network share or removable media. If extraction creates a zero-byte or unexpectedly small executable, discard it and repeat the download.

8. Test the drive and permissions
If Windows still says it cannot access the specified device, path or file, confirm that the drive is connected and that the folder opens normally. Copy the verified extracted folder to a location your account controls, such as your own Desktop or Downloads folder, and try again. Do not take ownership of system folders or change permissions globally just to launch a portable utility.
9. Test whether policy, not corruption, is stopping it
On a managed device, application-control policy can block all portable executables or files downloaded from the internet. The event may appear in Windows Security, your endpoint product or an enterprise management console. Give the administrator the file path, release information, checksum and block event; do not disable policy or firewall protection yourself.
10. Recheck after a restart
Restart Windows if security software has just completed remediation or if the drive was temporarily unavailable. Then launch the verified copy from its local extracted folder. If it opens, test a small, non-sensitive file first and confirm that the displayed hashes are stable before processing a large folder.

HashMyFiles can load files or folders, calculate the supported algorithms and export the results. For a downloaded installer, calculate at least the algorithm the publisher provides, then compare the complete value character-for-character. For higher assurance, calculate a second algorithm as an additional check, while remembering that the publisher’s matching value and trustworthy distribution channel are the key evidence.
The optional Explorer context-menu integration can make one-off checks easier. Enable it only if you want that convenience; it is not required for the program to run. Because the utility runs without installation or extra DLL files, removing it later generally means deleting the executable or extracted folder after closing it.
What to do when the error persists
The file disappears immediately
Return to Protection history and quarantine records. Repeated deletion usually indicates an active security rule, not a damaged desktop shortcut. Keep the file quarantined and ask your administrator or security vendor to analyze the detection. Do not create a blanket exclusion.
The checksum never matches
Verify that you are comparing the same release and algorithm, not a hash for a different archive or version. Check for download caching, proxy replacement or a damaged storage device. A second download on a trusted connection that still differs should be treated as unverified.
Only a network or USB path fails
Copy the verified archive to the local disk and retry. If the local copy works, troubleshoot the share, drive health or access rights separately. Do not conclude that HashMyFiles is defective when the original path is unavailable.

It opens but another program still reports a bad download
HashMyFiles calculates values; it does not certify the publisher or repair another file. Recalculate the exact file that the vendor’s instructions identify, use the same algorithm and compare against the vendor’s published value. A different filename, repackaged archive or updated release will naturally have a different hash.
