That association does not authenticate every file carrying the name. Treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until you verify its full path, digital signature, SHA-256 hash and security-scan results.
Available sandbox reports show different behavior between samples: one Gyazo setup created the executable alongside other Gyazo files, while another sample contacted Gyazo, certificate-status and analytics endpoints and generated a TLS-handshake-failure alert. Those observations are sample-specific, so they cannot prove that every gyonboarding.exe file is either safe or malicious.

What gyonboarding.exe is
Reports from the ANY.RUN analysis service associate gyonboarding.exe with Gyazo onboarding and installation activity. In a GyazoSetup 4.1.2.0 report, the file was created in the same installation sequence as other Gyazo components and read environment, Internet Explorer and cache settings. That pattern is consistent with a setup or first-run helper rather than a random Windows system file.
The name is not a Windows component name that proves authenticity. Windows allows any program to use an .exe extension, and malware can copy the name of a legitimate application. Microsoft describes unfamiliar or uncommon software as higher risk until its reputation is established. Malwarebytes likewise explains that an .exe extension only identifies an executable; safety depends on where the file came from and what its code does.

Why reports can look contradictory
Executable behavior depends on the Gyazo version, installer build, operating system and network conditions. A Gyazo 4.3 sandbox run recorded connections to gyazo.com, assets2.gyazo.com, certificate-status services, Google Analytics and other endpoints. The run also included reputation labels for some endpoints and an alert for potentially bad traffic caused by a TLS-handshake failure. A single sandbox result does not establish that every official Gyazo installation is malicious, nor does a clean result certify an unknown copy.
Use the file’s origin, location, publisher, hash, scan detections and persistence together. No single clue, including the filename, is enough.
Is gyonboarding.exe safe?
It can be a legitimate Gyazo component when it was installed by the official Gyazo installer, resides in the expected Gyazo program directory, carries a valid signature from the expected publisher and matches the installer version you obtained. It deserves investigation when it arrived in Downloads, Temp, an email attachment, a crack or keygen folder, or an unexpected AppData directory; when its signature is missing or invalid; or when security software flags it.

Safety checks before you open or delete the file
Do not double-click an unfamiliar copy just to see what happens. Opening it can execute code before you have collected evidence. Work from a standard Windows account when possible, and use an administrator account only when Windows explicitly requires it.
- Leave the unknown copy closed. If it is in Downloads, Temp, an email attachment, a crack or keygen folder, or an unexpected AppData location, do not launch it. Disconnecting from the internet is sensible if the file has already run and compromise is plausible.
- Locate the exact file. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes or Details tab, find gyonboarding.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete path, file size and creation date. If it is not running, search the path shown by a startup warning or use File Explorer’s search; do not assume that every copy on the disk is the same file.
- Check the digital signature. Right-click the file, choose Properties, then open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the publisher is the expected Gyazo publisher. An unsigned file is not automatically malware, but it removes an important authenticity check.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. In PowerShell, use
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:pathtogyonboarding.exe", replacing the path with the one you recorded. Save the resulting hash with the file version and date. Compare it with a hash from the same official Gyazo installer or a trusted internal reference; a name match without a hash match is not sufficient. - Scan the file before running it. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose the Microsoft Defender scan option. If the file is unexpected, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, update protection intelligence, and run a Full scan. A Defender warning is an early warning, not something to dismiss because the filename looks familiar.
- Get a second opinion when the result is unclear. Malwarebytes recommends checking an unfamiliar executable with a service such as VirusTotal. Uploading a file can disclose its contents to the service and its security partners, so consider whether the file contains sensitive or proprietary material. Record the detection names, number of engines reporting it and scan time.
- Preserve evidence before removal. Copy the path, hash, signature details, detection name and timestamp into a note. If a security product quarantines the file, keep the quarantine record. These details help distinguish a damaged Gyazo installation from a masquerading executable and are useful if you need support.
Fixing a gyonboarding.exe application error
Messages such as “GyOnboarding.exe has stopped working,” an application error dialog or a crash at Gyazo startup usually indicate a damaged component, an incomplete update, a security-product quarantine or a stale startup reference. First note when the problem began and whether it followed a Gyazo update, a Windows update or a security alert. That timing determines which repair is safest.
1. Stop the failing process
If the process is repeatedly crashing, open Task Manager, select gyonboarding.exe and choose End task. Do not end a process merely because its name is unfamiliar if the path and signature have not been checked. Ending it stops the current crash loop but does not repair the installation.

2. Confirm whether the installation is genuine
Apply the path, signature, hash and scan workflow above. If the file is in an unexpected directory or a scanner reports a threat, do not attempt to repair it by launching or replacing it. Quarantine it and follow the security-alert procedure below.
3. Uninstall and reinstall a verified Gyazo copy
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows editions).
- Find Gyazo, open its menu and choose Uninstall. Complete the uninstaller and restart Windows.
- After restart, check that the old Gyazo directory and startup entries no longer point to a missing gyonboarding.exe. Do not delete unrelated files simply because their names contain “Gyazo.”
- Download a fresh installer only from the official Gyazo distribution channel, verify that the download is the version you intend to install, and run a Defender scan before opening it.
- Install Gyazo, restart if requested, and test onboarding. If the error returns immediately, record the new path, version and event details rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Reinstallation is appropriate only when the file has been verified as part of a legitimate Gyazo installation. It is not a safe remedy for an unknown executable.
4. Check the faulting module in Event Viewer
Open Event Viewer from the Start menu and go to Windows Logs > Application. Filter or sort around the time of the crash and open the event whose source is Application Error or a related Windows Error Reporting entry. Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code and timestamp. A module belonging to Gyazo points toward an application repair; a Windows or security-product module may indicate a broader compatibility or quarantine issue. Do not download replacement DLL files from random websites based on a module name.

5. Check security-product history
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and look for a quarantine event at the time the error began. A quarantined Gyazo component can leave the onboarding executable or its startup command behind. Restore a file only when you have independently verified its path, signature and hash and are confident the detection is a false positive; otherwise leave it quarantined and reinstall from the official source.

A startup warning often means Windows is still trying to launch a command left behind by an incomplete uninstall or update. Related Gyazo setup activity has been observed in autorun and Task Scheduler locations, so check both rather than changing only one setting.

Right-click and choose Disable only when the path is missing, quarantined or otherwise verified as stale. Disabling an entry does not delete the executable.
- Inspect scheduled tasks. Open Task Scheduler and review Task Scheduler Library for a Gyazo-related task. Open its Actions tab and check the exact program path and arguments. Disable or delete a task only after confirming that it points to the missing or untrusted file; preserve the task name and action in your notes first.
- Inspect per-user Run entries. In Registry Editor, review
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunfor a Gyazo onboarding command. You may also need to inspect the corresponding machine-wide Run location if the entry was installed for all users. Export the key before changing it, and remove only a verified stale value. Editing unrelated registry values can prevent other programs from starting. - Restart and test. Restart Windows after disabling the stale reference. If the message returns, the command may exist in another startup location or the Gyazo installation may still be incomplete; uninstall and reinstall the verified application rather than repeatedly deleting files.
What to do after a security alert or unusual network activity
If Defender or another scanner flags gyonboarding.exe, or you observe network activity that does not fit your installation, treat the event as a security investigation rather than an ordinary application crash.
- Quarantine the file using the security product. Do not choose an allow or restore action merely because the filename resembles Gyazo.
- If the file has run, disconnect the affected computer from the network temporarily and avoid signing in to sensitive accounts on it until a scan is complete.
- Update Defender protection intelligence and run a full scan. Follow up on every detection, including downloaders, trojans or command-and-control indicators; a filename alone cannot classify the event.
- Preserve the path, SHA-256 hash, detection name, process start time and any network indicators before deleting evidence. These details help a security professional determine whether the event was a false positive, a compromised installer or a masquerading program.
- If the alert remains unexplained, submit the suspicious file through Microsoft’s malware-analysis process or consult qualified incident-response support. Do not upload confidential files to a public scanner without considering the disclosure implications.
Can you delete gyonboarding.exe?
Do not manually delete it while Gyazo is installed and working. Removing one executable can break onboarding, leave a startup command that produces a “file not found” message, or destroy evidence needed to investigate a detection.
For a verified Gyazo installation, uninstall Gyazo from Windows Settings first, restart, confirm that no Gyazo startup task remains, and then remove clearly identified leftover folders if the uninstaller leaves them behind. For an unexpected or detected copy, quarantine it with your security product, preserve its details and complete a full scan. Delete the quarantined item only after you have recorded the evidence and no investigation requires the original file.
Why two copies can have different risk
Compare the complete context, not just the spelling of the filename. A legitimate installer may create a file under a program directory and register a startup action; a masquerading file can copy the name while using a different folder, publisher and hash. Even two files from Gyazo installations can differ by version and behavior, which is why the sandbox observations cannot be generalized to every release.

A practical decision path
- Unknown path or unknown origin: do not run it; record the path and hash, then scan and seek a second opinion.
- Expected Gyazo path, valid signature and matching hash: if the error is limited to Gyazo, end the process, reinstall from the official channel and review Event Viewer.
- Missing file at startup: inspect Startup apps, Task Scheduler and Run entries; disable only the stale command, then reinstall Gyazo if you still need it.
- Security detection or suspicious traffic: quarantine, disconnect if compromise is plausible, update Defender, run a full scan and preserve evidence.
- Unresolved case: do not keep experimenting with registry edits or random DLL downloads. Use the recorded path, signature, hash, event and detection information when contacting the software publisher or a security professional.
