GTAVLanguageSelect.exe is Rockstar Games’ language-selection utility for the Windows PC version of Grand Theft Auto V. A copy inside your legitimate GTAV installation, installed through Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Launcher, is expected game software. It is not a file you should download from a random website.
The correct fix depends on your launcher. Steam users can run the utility from the GTAV folder; Rockstar Games Launcher and Epic users should change the language in their launcher. If the file is missing or will not run, update the game, verify its files, repair prerequisites and the Rockstar launcher, then use the game logs and Windows diagnostics before escalating to Rockstar Support.

What GTAVLanguageSelect.exe does
GTAVLanguageSelect.exe is the Windows executable Rockstar documents for selecting a language in the PC edition of Grand Theft Auto V. It presents a language choice and then offers Update and Close or Update and Run. The utility is a configuration component, not a separate game or a general Windows language tool.

Where the file should be
For the Steam procedure, Rockstar gives this default installation directory:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V
Your path will differ if Steam was installed on another drive or in a custom library. The important test is that the executable is inside the same Grand Theft Auto V folder as the rest of the installed game files. A copy in a temporary folder, a downloads folder or an unrelated directory does not have the expected provenance.

Is GTAVLanguageSelect.exe safe?
A GTAVLanguageSelect.exe that arrived with a genuine Grand Theft Auto V installation from Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Launcher is the expected language utility. Rockstar’s published instructions identify the file and explain how Steam users run it.

Rockstar’s instructions do not publish a dedicated malware verdict, a cryptographic hash or a digital-signature record for this particular executable. That means provenance and local inspection are the sensible way to assess an unexpected copy; they are not a Rockstar certification.
Checks for an unexpected copy
- Open the file’s containing folder and confirm that it is the installed Grand Theft Auto V directory for your launcher.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures when that tab is available. An absent tab is not, by itself, proof of malware.
- Use Windows Security to scan a copy you did not expect, especially one received outside your normal game installation.
- Do not replace the file with an executable from a third-party download site. Verification or a launcher reinstall obtains files from the installation source instead.
Change the GTA V language with the correct launcher
Use the launcher that owns your installation. Trying to force the Steam utility on a Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic installation can send you to the wrong repair path.

Steam: step-by-step
- Exit GTAV if it is running.
- In File Explorer, open the Steam library that contains Grand Theft Auto V. The default path is
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V, but a custom Steam location takes precedence. - Locate
GTAVLanguageSelect.exe. If extensions are hidden, it may be displayed asGTAVLanguageSelect. - Run the utility, select a supported language, and choose Update and Close to save the setting without launching, or Update and Run to save it and start the game.
- If the utility is absent or closes with an error, stop trying to obtain a replacement executable and follow the repair sequence below.
Rockstar Games Launcher: step-by-step
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open Settings.
- Under General > Language, choose the preferred language for games.
- Launch GTAV from the launcher.
Epic Games Launcher: step-by-step
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and go to your library.
- Open the settings for the Grand Theft Auto V library item.
- Select the desired language from the language drop-down.
- Launch GTAV and check whether the selection is applied.
Why the file opens Rockstar Games Launcher
GTAVLanguageSelect.exe is part of a launcher-managed game installation. Launching it can therefore invoke Rockstar Games Launcher for account, entitlement, update or game-start operations. This behavior is not, by itself, evidence that the executable is malicious or that the file is the wrong one.
If the game was installed through Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic, use that launcher’s language setting instead. The Steam-specific utility procedure is intended for the Steam installation path.

Common causes of GTAVLanguageSelect.exe errors

Official repair sequence for errors
Work through these steps in order. Each step uses the installed launcher or Windows components, so it avoids the provenance risk of downloading an isolated executable.
1. Confirm the launcher and use its language control
Identify whether GTAV came from Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic. For Rockstar Games Launcher and Epic installations, change the language in the launcher as described above. For Steam, run the utility from the installed GTAV directory. If you use the wrong control, later verification may not address the actual installation.
2. Connect to the internet and update
Rockstar advises launching while connected to the internet so the latest available patch can be applied. Close the game and launcher completely, reopen the owning launcher, allow pending updates to finish, and retry the language operation.

3. Verify the game files
Use the launcher’s built-in file-verification command for Grand Theft Auto V. Steam commonly labels this as a verification of the integrity of installed files; other launchers may use Verify or similar wording. Let the process finish before launching the game.

Verification is the appropriate response to a missing or damaged GTAVLanguageSelect.exe. It compares the installation with the launcher’s managed copy and can restore a file without relying on an unofficial download. If verification reports that files were reacquired, restart the launcher and try the language setting again.
4. Repair DirectX and Visual C++ prerequisites
Open the GTAV installation folder and then its Redistributables folder. Run the DirectX installer or the Visual C++ installer when the error points to a missing or damaged prerequisite. Allow each installer to complete, restart Windows if it requests a restart, and test GTAV again.
Do not delete random runtime files from the Windows folder. The redistributable installers supplied with the game are the safer repair source for the components Rockstar identifies in its troubleshooting guidance.
5. Check security software without leaving protection disabled
Security software can quarantine or block a game file. Review its detection and quarantine history for the GTAV installation and check whether the game is configured as an allowed exception, following the security product’s documentation.

If you temporarily test whether interference is the cause, keep the test brief, disconnect from untrusted sources, and re-enable protection immediately afterward. Use a trusted configuration once the diagnosis is complete. This step does not mean GTAVLanguageSelect.exe is infected; it checks whether a security product is preventing a legitimate installation from running.
6. Repair the Rockstar Games Launcher
For launcher initialization errors or messages indicating an incomplete installation, install the latest Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in again. Use the official launcher installer rather than a download site offering a standalone GTAVLanguageSelect.exe. After signing in, allow the launcher to update and then start GTAV from the owning library.
7. Read the launcher log
Open this file in File Explorer:

Look at the entries created at the time of the failure. The log can distinguish a launcher-start problem from a file, update or prerequisite problem. Preserve the original log before deleting or replacing anything so the timing and error text remain available.

If GTAV or the launcher crashes, generate a DxDiag report and an MSInfo report. These Windows diagnostic reports record system and software details that can reveal the component associated with the failure. Keep the reports together with the launcher log.
9. Escalate with evidence
If the launcher setting, update, file verification, prerequisite repair and launcher repair do not resolve the problem, contact Rockstar Support and provide the launcher log, DxDiag report and MSInfo report. Include the launcher you use, the exact Windows message, the installation path and the step at which the failure occurs. That information is more useful than attaching an executable copied from another computer.

Do not download a single replacement file from an unofficial site. A similarly named executable can be modified, incomplete or built for a different game version, and Windows may not provide a reliable way to establish its origin.
- Confirm that you are looking in the correct Grand Theft Auto V installation directory.
- Check your security software’s quarantine history in case the file was removed.
- Run the owning launcher’s file-verification process.
- Restart the launcher and test the language setting again.
- If verification cannot restore the installation, repair or reinstall the launcher, then contact Rockstar Support with the log and diagnostics.
Choosing the right repair path
- Language only: Use the launcher-specific language setting; Steam installations can use GTAVLanguageSelect.exe.
- Missing or damaged executable: Verify files through the owning launcher, not a third-party download.

Bottom line
GTAVLanguageSelect.exe is a documented Grand Theft Auto V PC language utility when it resides in the game’s legitimate installation. Use Steam’s utility only for a Steam installation; use the language controls in Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic for those editions. For errors, update and verify the game, repair the supplied prerequisites, check security interference, repair the Rockstar launcher, and preserve logs and diagnostics. An unofficial standalone executable is not a safe substitute for those steps.
