What gta-v-launcher.exe is—and what the name does not prove

Windows uses an .exe file to start a program, but the displayed filename is not an identity certificate. Anyone can rename a file to gta-v-launcher.exe. The name therefore cannot establish that the file belongs to Rockstar Games, that it is a required GTA V component, or that it is malware.

Rockstar’s documented Windows launcher executable is Launcher.exe, normally installed at C:Program FilesRockstar GamesLauncher. GTA V itself can also contain executables supplied by the game or by the store that installed it. A file with the gta-v-launcher.exe name could consequently be a legitimate component in a particular installation, but the official support material does not publish a hash or certificate thumbprint for that exact filename. Treat the path and provenance as decisive evidence instead of relying on the name.

When the file deserves immediate suspicion

• It is in Downloads, a temporary folder, an unrelated Windows system directory, or a newly created folder outside the game and launcher installation.
• It arrived in a cracked, pirated, cheat, mod, or “DLL repair” package rather than through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games.
• Its Properties window has no digital signature, an invalid signature, or a signer that is not the expected Rockstar or platform publisher.
• Microsoft Defender or another security product identifies the file or its containing directory.

Quarantine a suspicious copy rather than trying to make it run. Obtain the game through the official platform and let that platform recreate verified files.

How to check whether the executable is legitimate

1. Confirm the complete path

1. Right-click the shortcut or process that refers to gta-v-launcher.exe and choose Open file location. If the option is unavailable, open Task Manager, right-click the relevant process, and choose Open file location.
2. Read the complete folder path. It should be within the GTA V installation or a known Rockstar, Steam, or Epic Games directory that you intentionally installed.
3. Do not trust a shortcut merely because its icon looks like GTA V. Open the file location and inspect the executable itself.

3. Scan with Microsoft Defender

1. Right-click the executable or its containing folder and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. If the context-menu entry is hidden, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
2. Update security intelligence first from Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates.
3. Run a Full scan when you are unsure about the file or have seen other unexplained detections. Microsoft says Defender “tries to block malware before it can infect your device,” but a clean result is one part of the assessment, not proof that an unknown download is legitimate.

If Defender quarantines the file, leave it quarantined until you have reinstalled the game from the official platform. Do not create an exclusion merely to force an unverified executable to run.

Before changing files, identify the failure

Write down the exact error text or code, the full executable path, whether the installation is from Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games, and your Windows edition and version. Note whether the failure affects story mode, GTA Online, or both. This record prevents a clean reinstall when a simple integrity check or runtime repair would have been enough.

Rockstar Games Launcher

1. Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in to the account that owns GTA V.
2. Open Settings.
3. Under My installed games, select Grand Theft Auto V.
4. Choose Verify Integrity.
5. Wait for the completion notification, then start the game from the launcher.

Do not interrupt the process by deleting files manually. If the launcher reports that files were replaced, test the game before making another change.

Steam or Epic Games

Use the equivalent “verify integrity” or “verify files” command in the store client that installed GTA V. The exact label and location can differ between client versions. After verification, launch from Steam or Epic directly rather than from a copied shortcut, batch file, or Command Prompt. Rockstar’s support guidance treats direct launching through Rockstar, Steam, or Epic as the supported route.

Step 2: Repair 0xc000007b, DLL, DirectX, and Visual C++ failures

Rockstar describes Windows application error 0xc000007b as typically associated with an incomplete Rockstar Games Launcher installation and possible Windows security conflicts. Rockstar also states that Visual C++ (“C++”), Direct3D (“D3D”), and Microsoft DirectX errors can indicate a damaged or incomplete DirectX or C++ installation.

Run the supplied redistributable installers

1. Open the GTA V installation directory.
2. Open C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto VRedistributables when that is the default installation path on your system. Store installations may use a different root folder; use the game folder shown by your client.
3. Run the DirectX installer and the Visual C++ installer supplied in that folder. Accept the repair or installation option offered by each setup program.

1. Open your antivirus or Windows Security history and look for an event naming GTA V, the Rockstar launcher, or gta-v-launcher.exe.
2. Check the exact path in the event. Compare it with the installation path you confirmed in Properties.
3. Update the security product and rescan the file.
4. If the file is from an official installation, has a valid expected publisher signature, and the detection is clearly a quarantine or block of that component, review the product’s documented exception process. Rockstar specifically recommends checking whether antivirus software lists GTAV as an exception.
5. Remove any temporary exception after testing if the security product permits it, and never exclude a random file simply because the game will not start.

For an untrusted file in Downloads, a cracked package, or an unsigned executable with a malware detection, do not add an exception. Quarantine it and reinstall from the official platform.

Step 4: Read the launcher log and collect Windows diagnostics

When verification and runtime repair do not resolve the crash, diagnostics can show whether the failure occurs in the launcher, the game, a driver, or Windows itself.

Find the Rockstar launcher log

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Go to My DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV.
3. Open launcher.log in Notepad.
4. Look near the end of the file for the timestamp matching your latest attempt. Record the exact error, referenced path, and any message about permissions, updates, or missing data.

Do not edit or delete the log before saving a copy. A support technician can use the unmodified entries alongside your error code and platform information.

Generate DxDiag and MSInfo

1. Press Windows key + R, type dxdiag, and press Enter. Choose Save All Information to create a text report.
2. Press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. Use File → Export to save the system-information report.
3. Keep the reports with launcher.log, the executable path, the exact error, and the launcher platform when contacting Rockstar support.

These reports can reveal graphics, audio, Windows, and hardware details that a filename alone cannot. Remove personal information you do not want to share before sending a report.

Step 5: Resolve launcher permissions and repeated UAC prompts

Repeated User Account Control prompts do not automatically mean the executable is malicious. They can occur when the launcher needs to update files in a protected installation directory or when a shortcut points to the wrong location.

1. Confirm that the shortcut targets the launcher you installed, not a duplicate copy in Downloads or a temporary folder.
2. For the documented default launcher, inspect C:Program FilesRockstar GamesLauncherLauncher.exe.
3. Right-click the launcher, choose Properties → Compatibility, and use Run this program as an administrator only when needed for the documented launcher or a support-directed test.
4. Apply the setting, start the launcher once, and check whether the prompt or error changes. If it does not, return to the normal setting instead of granting administrator rights to an unverified executable.

Administrator mode cannot repair corrupted game data and should not be used to bypass a malware warning.

Step 6: Launch GTA V correctly, especially for GTA Online

Start GTA V through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games. Avoid a copied executable, an unofficial mod loader, a batch file, or a shortcut whose target you have not inspected.

For GTA Online, Rockstar states that BattlEye is required to connect to official GTA Online servers. Launching without BattlEye will not permit that connection. If story mode works but GTA Online does not, check that the supported launcher path is being used and that BattlEye has not been disabled or blocked by security software.

Step 7: Clean-reinstall the Rockstar launcher only when necessary

Rockstar’s support articles for failed zlib and critical-data errors attribute persistent failures most likely to corrupted installation files and provide a clean launcher reinstall. This is the highest-impact option in the workflow, so preserve your game data and use it only after verification and runtime repair have failed.

Prepare safely

• Back up saved games and any personal settings you need to keep.
• Close GTA V, Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic Games.
• Note the current installation location so the launcher can find the existing title afterward.
• Do not delete arbitrary GTA V folders, save files, or mod files as a substitute for the listed cleanup.

Remove the launcher while leaving game data

1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps in Windows and uninstall Rockstar Games Launcher.
2. When the uninstaller offers an option to remove game data, leave that option unchecked so the large GTA V installation remains.
3. Remove only the Rockstar Games and Social Club folders specified in Rockstar’s clean-reinstall instructions. Folder names and locations can vary with the launcher version; do not broaden the deletion to unrelated folders.
4. Restart Windows.
5. Download the launcher from Rockstar’s official Social Club launcher page, install it, sign in, and let it scan for existing titles.
6. Verify GTA V again after the launcher recognizes it, then launch from the supported client.

Rockstar’s related support articles were updated on January 7, 2025, for failed zlib errors, and April 29, 2024, for critical-data errors. Follow the current folder list in those instructions rather than relying on a remembered cleanup recipe.

Should you download a replacement gta-v-launcher.exe?

No. A replacement executable from an unofficial site cannot be authenticated by its filename, may be modified, may carry malware, and may not match your GTA V edition or launcher version. “DLL fix” sites have the same problem for runtime libraries. Use the official platform’s verification process to obtain matching files, or reinstall the launcher through Rockstar’s official distribution channel.

If you already downloaded a replacement, disconnect it from the game directory, scan it, and remove it. Then verify the installation and check the launcher path and digital signature again.

Use the error pattern to choose the next action

The game reports a missing or corrupt file

Run Rockstar, Steam, or Epic file verification. If files are repeatedly corrupted after replacement, inspect security-product events and the launcher log before attempting a clean reinstall.

Windows shows 0xc000007b

Run the DirectX and Visual C++ installers in the game’s Redistributables folder, restart, and verify the files. If the message continues, collect launcher.log, DxDiag, and MSInfo.

The launcher opens, but GTA V immediately closes
