GTA VI is officially presented as a story about Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

What “canon ending” means in GTA 5
Grand Theft Auto V gives Franklin three possible conclusions. Unlike a story with one fixed finale, the game lets the player decide which major character, if any, Franklin sacrifices. A canon ending is the outcome treated as the one that happened in the shared timeline used by later stories.

It is therefore more accurate to call Option C the best-supported canon reading or de facto canon than to say Rockstar officially announced it.
The three GTA 5 endings compared
Franklin’s final decision produces three broad outcomes. The table separates who survives from how well each ending fits the later continuity described in GTA Online.

The important distinction is not that the other endings are invalid in your personal save. Each is a playable ending. The continuity question asks which result best accommodates later stories that refer to the characters as though they are still alive.

Why Deathwish is considered the canon route
It keeps all three protagonists available
Option C preserves Franklin, Michael and Trevor. That gives later fiction the widest range of characters without having to explain away a death chosen by the player. The other choices permanently remove one of the two older protagonists from the story’s possible future.
GTA Online supplies the continuity clues
Subsequent GTA Online dialogue and updates have been read as showing Michael and Trevor alive. Franklin also continues to appear in the online story. Taken together, those appearances are consistent with “The Third Way” and inconsistent with an interpretation in which either Michael or Trevor was killed at the end of GTA V.

It is still an inference, not a formal declaration
The available support is reported in-game continuity, rather than a direct Rockstar quotation saying, “Option C is canon.” That limitation matters when explaining the answer. “Deathwish is the best-supported ending” is precise; “Rockstar officially confirmed Deathwish as canon” overstates the evidence.
What happens if you choose another ending?
Option A: Kill Trevor
This route ends Trevor’s part in the central story while Franklin and Michael remain. It is a legitimate branch of the single-player campaign, but it creates a continuity problem for later material interpreted as showing Trevor alive. If you replay GTA V and select this outcome, the game does not treat your save as a mistake; it simply records the branch you selected.
Option B: Kill Michael
This route removes Michael and leaves Franklin and Trevor. It similarly conflicts with later material reported to place Michael alive. The conflict is about the shared narrative implied by later content, not about whether the ending is playable or meaningful.
Option C: Deathwish and “The Third Way”
Deathwish is the choice in which Franklin attempts to avoid killing either ally. “The Third Way” then concludes the main conflict while preserving the three protagonists. Because later GTA Online content can use Michael, Trevor and Franklin as living characters, this branch requires the fewest continuity exceptions.
Does GTA 5’s ending directly affect GTA 6?
No direct effect has been confirmed in the official GTA VI material reviewed. Rockstar’s published overview does not say that GTA V’s final choice controls GTA VI’s plot, and it does not identify any of GTA V’s three protagonists as returning characters.

The official premise instead centers on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Their relationship, criminal circumstances and reliance on one another are presented as the foundation of the new story. The setting is Vice City and the broader state of Leonida, rather than a continuation explicitly framed around Franklin, Michael or Trevor.

The continuity-safe inference
If GTA VI uses the same continuity suggested by GTA Online, Deathwish is the least contradictory GTA V ending. Keeping Michael and Trevor alive means a future story could reference them without undoing a prior canonical death. This is a logical consequence of the continuity evidence, not confirmation that either character appears in GTA VI.
What the inference does not prove
- It does not prove that Franklin will be a GTA VI protagonist, supporting character or cameo.
- It does not prove that Michael or Trevor will return.
- It does not prove that GTA VI will mention “The Third Way” or any GTA V finale.
- It does not show that your individual GTA V save file is imported into GTA VI.
The safest conclusion is conditional: Deathwish leaves the most room for future continuity, but Rockstar’s official GTA VI overview does not establish a story connection or promise an appearance by anyone from GTA V.
Who are Jason and Lucia in the confirmed GTA VI premise?
Rockstar’s official overview identifies Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as the central pair. Their circumstances draw them into a criminal conspiracy, and the premise emphasizes that they depend on each other. The story takes place in Vice City and across Leonida.
This information is enough to describe GTA VI as a new protagonist-led crime story. It is not enough to claim that the game ignores GTA V, shares every GTA Online event, or brings back a specific former protagonist. Until Rockstar publishes a direct connection, those possibilities remain speculation.

How to discuss GTA 5 canon without overstating it
- Start with the status of the evidence. Say that Option C is the best-supported or de facto canon reading, based on later GTA Online continuity.
- Name the mission. Explain that the Deathwish choice leads to “The Third Way.”
- State the survival outcome. Franklin, Michael and Trevor all remain alive on this route.
- Separate GTA Online from GTA VI. Continuity clues in GTA Online support the all-survive interpretation, but the official GTA VI overview does not make the same claim about its plot.
- Use conditional language for predictions. “Would avoid a contradiction” is supportable; “will return” is not confirmed by the available official material.
What the release information does—and does not—tell us
When checked on October 13, 2026, Rockstar’s landing page listed GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a planned release date of November 19, 2026. That platform and date information is time-sensitive and should be rechecked near publication. It provides launch context only; it is not evidence about which GTA V ending is canonical or whether a GTA V character appears.
Rockstar has also announced GTA V and GTA Online for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Platform availability does not resolve the story question, but it explains why continuity discussions often consider GTA Online material alongside the modern console versions of the games.
Common mistakes in answers about the canon ending
Calling Deathwish an explicit Rockstar confirmation
The evidence supports a conclusion from continuity, not a quoted announcement. Presenting the inference as an official declaration makes the answer sound more certain than the source material allows.
Assuming every player’s ending is overwritten
GTA V still allows all three outcomes in the single-player campaign. Calling Deathwish the de facto canon route describes the timeline most compatible with later material; it does not invalidate the other choices in a player’s own playthrough.

Treating online appearances as a complete chronology
GTA Online provides useful clues about who is alive, but those clues do not automatically explain every relationship between the online events and GTA VI. Use the appearances to support the GTA V continuity reading, not to manufacture an unannounced GTA VI plot.
Can you replay all three endings?
Yes. The single-player finale presents Franklin with the three choices, and selecting a different option on another playthrough lets you see the alternate outcome. For a continuity-focused replay, choose Deathwish and complete “The Third Way.” For an examination of the branching design, play each route separately and compare which protagonist is removed.
Replay choices do not provide evidence that Rockstar has selected a different official ending. They demonstrate the game’s branching structure; the canon discussion comes from how later stories treat the characters.
Will Franklin, Michael or Trevor be in GTA 6?
There is no confirmed answer in the official material described here. The published GTA VI overview does not announce a role for any of them. It is reasonable to say that Deathwish keeps all three available for a possible future appearance, but it is not accurate to report that any one of them is confirmed to return.
Until Rockstar provides a character announcement, trailer detail or story statement connecting GTA V to GTA VI, treat return claims as speculation rather than established plot information.
