A filename alone cannot prove that every copy is identical, so check the exact path, hash, digital signature and source. Do not run or whitelist the file. Quarantine it, scan Windows, secure your accounts if it ran, and repair Garry’s Mod through Steam.
What is gmod_updater.exe?
gmod_updater.exe is an executable name found in historical torrent and other unofficial Garry’s Mod distributions. It is not established as a current official Steam component. Facepunch Studios identifies the Steam Online Store as the official place to buy Garry’s Mod and directs users to Steam for installation and updates.

The name is therefore a clue about provenance, not a complete identification. Malware can be renamed, copied into another folder or bundled with a modified game installer. ThreatInfo records the same hash under names including Gmod_Updater.exe, Gmod_Updater.new.exe and $R9F5XY4.exe, with paths linked to unofficial distributions. Two files with different capitalization or names may still be the same binary, while two files with the same name may be unrelated.
What the reported sample did
In its September 8, 2024 analysis, ANY.RUN labeled a reported Gmod_Updater.exe sample malicious. The report observed loader behavior, executable replacement or dropping, requests for files from the Internet, and HTTP traffic to update.bruss.org.ru. Those observations justify treating an unexpected copy as a potential malware incident until it has been checked.

The report describes a particular sample, not every file bearing the name. There is no authoritative prevalence statistic establishing how often this filename represents an infection. Your file’s location, hash, signature and origin are needed for a more confident conclusion.
Is gmod_updater.exe safe?
An unexpected copy is not safe to assume legitimate. Steam’s account-security guidance warns that malware is often disguised as “Pirated software, cheats, fake game demos / betas, or gaming adjacent utilities such as communications software, mod / inventory managers, etc.” An updater obtained with a torrent, crack, repack or unknown mod installer falls into that risk category.

If a security product has already detected the file, follow its quarantine recommendation rather than adding an exception. Do not launch it “just to see what happens.”

Preserve enough information to identify the copy and to explain what happened if the file ran. Perform these checks without opening the executable.

- Record the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click the detection or shortcut and choose Open file location. Copy the full path, including the drive letter. A location under a torrent, crack, temporary-download or unknown mod folder is materially different from a file installed by Steam.
- Check the file details. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the size, creation date, modification date and Digital Signatures tab. A missing signature is a warning, not conclusive proof; a signature must also be valid and belong to an expected publisher.
- Calculate a hash. In PowerShell, run:
Get-FileHash "C:pathtogmod_updater.exe" -Algorithm SHA256Replace the path with the one you recorded. You can also use the built-in command prompt utility:
certutil -hashfile "C:pathtogmod_updater.exe" SHA256Save the resulting SHA-256 value with the path and date. Compare hashes, not just names, with a trusted security report or with the installer source you deliberately chose. Do not assume that a hash mentioned for one reported sample applies to your file.
- Identify the source. Ask whether you installed Garry’s Mod from Steam or whether the executable arrived in a torrent, repack, crack, cheat, mod manager or unsolicited download. If you cannot account for its arrival, treat it as untrusted.
- Do not run, whitelist or submit the executable to an exception list. An exception can allow a malicious file to continue operating and can make later scans less useful.
Remove or quarantine a suspicious copy
Use the following order when the file is unexpected or came from an unofficial distribution.
- Disconnect the source of the file. Close the torrent client, unofficial installer or mod manager that supplied it. Do not reinstall from the same package after deleting the executable.
- Quarantine with your security software. Let the current security product isolate the file. If it offers a choice between quarantine and deletion, quarantine preserves evidence while preventing normal execution. Do not restore the item unless a later hash and signature review establishes that it is legitimate.
- Run updated scans. Steam advises using updated spyware, adware and virus-scanning utilities when malware interferes with Steam, and says to download such tools only through official, trusted websites. Run a full scan rather than relying only on a quick check. If detections persist after Windows starts normally, use an offline or boot-time scan offered by your security software.
- Remove the associated unofficial distribution. Uninstall the repack or crack, delete its installer and remove shortcuts or scheduled launchers it created. Keep personal saves and configuration files only after scanning them and confirming that they are not executable payloads.
- Restart and scan again. A second scan after reboot can reveal files that were locked while Windows was running. Record any new paths and names instead of repeatedly allowing the same detection.
Do not manually delete random files from C:Windows, the registry or the Steam installation simply because their names look unfamiliar. Removing the wrong system component can create a separate startup problem and will not reliably clean an infection.

If gmod_updater.exe already ran
Assume that credentials may have been exposed if the executable launched, downloaded additional files or was allowed through a security prompt. Carry out account protection from a device you trust, or after the affected Windows installation has been scanned.
- Change the Steam password. Use a clean device if possible. Do not reuse the old password on another service.
- Change the password for the email account linked to Steam. An attacker who controls that mailbox can attempt password resets even after Steam’s password changes.
- Review authorized devices and sessions. Remove devices or sessions you do not recognize and sign out where Steam provides that option.
- Enable Steam Guard. Use the strongest available verification method and check for unexpected changes to the account email, phone number, inventory or trade activity.
- Check for continuing symptoms. Repeated browser redirects, unexplained startup entries, new scheduled tasks, disabled security tools, credential prompts or recurring detections indicate that the incident may extend beyond the original executable.
Steam’s guidance specifically recommends changing the Steam and associated email passwords, reviewing authorized devices, signing out everywhere and enabling Steam Guard when an account may be compromised. Do not postpone these steps while trying to make the game launch.
Fix Garry’s Mod without gmod_updater.exe
The supported repair route is Steam. Install or reinstall Garry’s Mod from the Steam store rather than from an unofficial updater. Complete malware triage first if the suspicious file executed; otherwise a fresh game installation could simply reintroduce the same unwanted package.

1. Restart Steam and close leftover processes
Exit Steam completely, not just the window. Open Task Manager and close leftover Garry’s Mod or related game processes if they remain. Start Steam again and test the game before changing several settings at once. This separates a stuck process from a damaged installation.

2. Remove interference from overlays and security software
Temporarily disable or close overlays and other utilities that hook into the game, then test again. Facepunch’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies antivirus interference as a possible factor. Do not permanently weaken protection or create a broad exclusion for the game directory; if an exclusion is necessary for a controlled test, remove it immediately afterward and scan the folder.
3. Verify the game files
In Steam, open your Library, right-click Garry’s Mod, choose Properties, open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam compares the installation with its depot and replaces missing or damaged files. Allow the operation to finish, then launch the game from Steam. A verification repair is preferable to copying executables from a third-party download.
4. Apply the documented startup cleanup
Facepunch’s 2026 support update references deleting the game’s bin folders and verifying game-cache integrity for certain startup problems. Follow the current Facepunch instructions for the affected build, delete only the specified bin folder or folders, and run Steam’s integrity check afterward so required files are downloaded again. Do not delete the entire Steam library or unrelated Windows folders.
5. Try the direct executable only when support calls for it
Facepunch documents launching hl2.exe directly as an appropriate troubleshooting route in some cases. Use the copy that belongs to your verified Steam installation, not a similarly named executable supplied by a torrent or unknown installer. If the direct launch works but the Steam launch does not, return to Steam’s process, overlay and file-integrity checks rather than adopting an unofficial updater.
6. Reinstall as a last game-level step
If verification and the documented cleanup do not resolve the error, uninstall Garry’s Mod in Steam, restart the computer, and install it again from the Steam store. Preserve saves or configuration only after malware scans are clean and you have identified which files are safe to keep. Reinstalling the game does not by itself remove malware that has created startup entries, browser changes or files outside the game directory.

- An unofficial installer keeps restoring it. Remove the installer, torrent job, crack or launcher that supplied the file; deleting only the executable leaves the source intact.
- A scheduled task or startup entry launches it. Review Task Manager’s Startup apps and Windows’ scheduled tasks for entries pointing to the recorded path. Disable or remove only entries you can identify, and scan before rebooting.
- A security product is reporting a renamed copy. Compare the hash and path for each detection. Threat reports show that one hash can appear under several names.
- A legitimate game repair is being confused with an unofficial updater. Use Steam’s verification and reinstall process. Official repair files should come through Steam, not through a separate updater downloaded from an unknown site.
- Another component remains compromised. Browser redirects, repeated downloads or account alerts after deletion require broader incident response rather than another game reinstall.

Can you delete gmod_updater.exe?
Yes, you can remove the suspicious copy after recording its path and hash, but deletion is not the whole fix. If it came from an unofficial distribution, remove that distribution and scan Windows so the file is not recreated. If the executable ran, protect Steam and email accounts even if the file is gone. If Garry’s Mod then fails, repair it through Steam’s verification or reinstall process instead of downloading another updater.
When to escalate beyond manual cleanup
Seek deeper incident-response help if detections return after reboot, browser redirects continue, security settings are changed without permission, unknown startup tasks remain, or Steam and email accounts show activity you did not authorize. A Windows reset or reinstall may be appropriate when you cannot establish that the system is clean, but back up only documents and other files that have been scanned. Do not restore unknown executables, cracks or installers.
