gitk.exe is the Windows launcher for gitk, Git’s Tcl/Tk graphical repository browser. It visualizes commit history, changes, commit details, and files in revision trees; it is not a Windows system component.

A copy installed with official Git for Windows is normally legitimate, but safety depends on its source and Git version. Git for Windows versions 2.39.1 and earlier had a high-severity issue that could cause gitk to run executables from an untrusted worktree. Version 2.39.2 fixed that issue, so updating Git is the first safety step.

What gitk.exe does

Git is primarily used from a terminal, but its history can be difficult to follow in a text log. gitk supplies a graphical view of that history. The Windows executable, gitk.exe, starts that interface.

The gitk manual describes it as “The Git repository browser.” It can show:

#1 Best Overall
  • Changes introduced by individual commits.
  • The commit ancestry graph, including branching and merging.
  • Commit messages, authorship and other commit information.
  • The files and directory contents recorded in revision trees.

Gitk is written in Tcl/Tk and is distributed with Git for convenience. It reads the repository you open; it does not replace Git’s object database and it does not modify a repository merely because you view its history.

Command syntax

The general form is:

gitk [options] [revision range] -- [path…]

The double hyphen separates revision arguments from file paths. For example, gitk --since="2 weeks ago" -- path/to/file asks gitk to show recent history for one file. gitk --all broadens the view to references across branches and tags instead of limiting the graph to the default revision context.

Is gitk.exe safe?

A genuine gitk.exe delivered as part of an official Git for Windows installation is expected software. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine: an unrelated program could use the same name. Check that the executable belongs to your Git installation and obtain Git from the official Git for Windows distribution rather than downloading a replacement executable from an unknown site.

The important Git for Windows security issue

Git for Windows advisory GHSA-wxwv-49qw-35pm, published in 2023, describes a Windows problem in which running gitk could inadvertently run executables from the current directory. The advisory says that social engineering could trick a user into running untrusted code. Versions affected were 2.39.1 and earlier; version 2.39.2 patched the problem. The advisory rated the issue High, with a CVSS v3 base score of 8.6 out of 10.

The risk is especially relevant when you open a clone supplied by somebody else or obtained from an untrusted location. An affected installation should not be used to launch gitk, or Git GUI’s “Visualize History” function, in such a clone. Update Git for Windows first. Later Git for Windows release notes also contain security fixes affecting Git tooling, so staying current is part of safe operation rather than a one-time response to the 2.39.2 fix.

What to do if a clone behaves suspiciously

  1. Close gitk and stop using the questionable clone.
  2. Do not launch Git GUI history visualization on that clone while using an affected Git version.
  3. Update Git for Windows to a release newer than 2.39.1, with at least 2.39.2 required for the specific gitk issue.
  4. Inspect the repository and its worktree before reopening it. If you did not create or obtain the clone from a source you trust, treat it as untrusted and ask the repository owner for a verified copy.

This behavior does not mean every gitk installation is malicious. It is a documented version-specific vulnerability, which is why provenance and patch level matter.

Where gitk.exe comes from and where it is located

With the standard Git for Windows installer, Git commands are made available through Git Bash, Git CMD, or the Windows PATH configuration selected during setup. You normally start gitk from one of those Git-provided shells while your current directory is a Git repository.

Portable Git behaves differently. Its README states that it does not modify PATH automatically. Until you start Git Bash or Git CMD from the portable package, or add that package’s cmd directory to PATH, Windows will not resolve git.exe or gitk.exe by name. The documented portable example is C:portablegitcmdgitk.exe.

If you need to confirm which copy you are using, open the Git shell supplied by the installation and launch gitk there. A copy located in the folder belonging to the official Git installation is expected; a copy discovered elsewhere deserves additional scrutiny before you run it.

How to open gitk on Windows

  1. Open Git Bash or Git CMD from your Git for Windows installation.
  2. Change to a local Git repository. Gitk is a repository browser, so running it from an unrelated directory will not provide a project history.
  3. Run gitk. The graphical history window should open for the repository in the current directory.
  4. For a complete reference view, run gitk --all. This includes commits reachable from branches and tags represented by the repository’s refs.
  5. To narrow the view, supply a revision range or a file path, such as gitk --since="2 weeks ago" -- path/to/file.

If you use a portable package, perform the same steps inside its Git Bash or Git CMD environment. Alternatively, add the package’s cmd directory to PATH and then invoke gitk from a new terminal so Windows reads the updated PATH.

Standard versus portable Git and history options

These choices affect both how gitk starts and what you see in its graph:

Choice What it changes Typical action
Standard Git for Windows installation Git commands can be exposed through Git Bash, Git CMD, or the configured Windows PATH. Open Git Bash or Git CMD, change to a repository, and run gitk.
Portable Git package PATH is not modified automatically, so commands are not available by name in an ordinary Windows terminal until you use the package shell or add its cmd directory to PATH. Use the package’s shell, add its cmd directory to PATH, or invoke C:portablegitcmdgitk.exe.
Default repository view Shows the history from the revision context supplied to gitk. Run gitk from the repository.
All references Expands the graph to refs across branches and tags. Run gitk --all.
Filtered history Restricts the graph by a revision range, date expression, and/or path. Use a form such as gitk --since="2 weeks ago" -- path/to/file.

Fix: “gitk is not recognized” or “gitk.exe not found”

This message usually indicates a launcher context or PATH problem, not a damaged repository. Work through the following order.

1. Use the Git-provided shell

Open Git Bash or Git CMD from the Git for Windows installation, change to the repository, and run gitk. These shells are configured to find the Git programs even when a general Windows Command Prompt is not.

2. Handle a portable installation correctly

Portable Git does not add itself to PATH. Start Git Bash or Git CMD from the portable package, then run gitk from the repository. If you want to use a normal terminal, add the portable package’s cmd directory to PATH and open a new terminal window before trying again. The documented direct path example is C:portablegitcmdgitk.exe.

3. Confirm that you are in a repository

Gitk is designed to browse a repository. If you launch it from an arbitrary folder, change to the folder containing the project’s Git data and run the command again. A missing repository context can look like a launch failure because no history window is produced.

4. Check the installation source and update it

If Git Bash and Git CMD both fail to find gitk, verify that Git for Windows is actually installed and that you are using the intended installation. Update from the official Git for Windows distribution before trying to repair an old installation. Updating also removes the security exposure present in versions through 2.39.1.

5. Reinstall only from the official package when files are missing

If the installation is incomplete or gitk.exe has been removed, install Git for Windows again from its maintained installer or portable package. Do not substitute an executable downloaded from an unverified file site. A reinstall should preserve repositories stored outside the installation directory, but back up any local work you cannot recreate before changing the installation.

Fix: the gitk window does not open or closes immediately

Start from a repository and read the terminal output

Run gitk from Git Bash or Git CMD after changing to a valid repository. Keep the terminal visible while the command runs; error text printed there is more useful than repeatedly double-clicking the executable. If the command works in one repository but not another, the repository context or its worktree is the next place to investigate.

Update before deeper diagnosis

An installation older than 2.39.2 should be updated before you continue, both because of the documented gitk vulnerability and because later Git for Windows releases include additional security fixes. Retest the same command after updating.

Use a smaller test

First try plain gitk in a known-good repository. If that works, try gitk --all, then add a date filter or path filter. This sequence separates a general launch problem from a repository graph or argument problem without changing repository data.

Fix long filename and path errors

Git for Windows’ FAQ notes that Windows paths are limited to 260 characters by default and that Git operations can fail when a path is longer. For supported Git operations, enable long-path handling with:

git config --global core.longpaths true

Run that command in Git Bash, Git CMD, or another shell where Git is available, then retry the operation that failed. The setting addresses supported path-length failures; it does not restore a missing gitk.exe, correct PATH, or repair a corrupted installation. Applications that do not support extended Windows paths can still impose their own limits.

Can you delete gitk.exe?

You can remove the executable physically, but doing so is usually the wrong fix. Gitk is an optional graphical browser, not a Windows system component, so deleting it will not delete your commits or working files. It will, however, prevent gitk and Git GUI’s history-visualization feature from launching and can leave the Git installation incomplete.

If you no longer want gitk, remove Git for Windows through the normal Windows uninstall process rather than deleting one file. If you still use Git commands, keep the installation intact. If you suspect that a copy outside your Git installation is unwanted, do not execute it; verify which installation owns it and remove the unrelated program through its legitimate uninstaller after preserving any files you need.

Practical troubleshooting decision tree

  • “Not recognized” in Command Prompt: open Git Bash or Git CMD, or correct PATH for the Git installation. For portable Git, remember that PATH is not changed automatically.
  • No window from a valid shell: run the command from a repository, keep the terminal open, and read its error output.
  • Failure only with a long path: enable core.longpaths for supported operations, then retry.
  • Failure on an old installation: update Git for Windows before further testing; versions through 2.39.1 are affected by the documented gitk issue.
  • Unexpected behavior in a downloaded clone: stop using gitk on that clone, update Git, and inspect the repository before reopening it.
  • Executable found outside the Git installation: do not assume the filename makes it legitimate. Verify its provenance and remove or uninstall the unrelated software through a trusted process.

What you should remember

gitk.exe is Git’s graphical history browser for Windows. It is normally safe when it comes from an official Git for Windows installation that is kept up to date. The critical version boundary is 2.39.2: Git for Windows 2.39.1 and earlier had a high-severity issue involving unintended execution from the current worktree. Most launch failures are solved by using Git Bash or Git CMD, working inside a repository, and configuring PATH correctly for portable Git. For path-length failures, core.longpaths=true can help where the operation supports it.
