git-switch.exe is not the name used for a separately documented Git command. The official feature is git switch, which changes the current branch. Git for Windows uses wrapper executables and underlying binaries in different folders, so an error mentioning git-switch.exe can indicate a PATH conflict, a damaged installation, a blocked file, or a long-path checkout problem. Check the file’s complete path, signature, version, and installation source before trusting it; then repair the relevant cause rather than downloading a loose executable.
What “git-switch.exe” means in practice
Git’s command reference calls the feature git switch and describes it as “Switch branches.” Typical forms include:

On Windows, Git can expose command entry points whose names look like git-*.exe. A message, process list, shortcut, or third-party tool may therefore display git-switch.exe even though the documented user command is git switch. The name alone does not prove that a separate, official program was installed.
Git for Windows describes its executable entry points as variants of a “Git wrapper.” A wrapper prepares variables such as PATH, HOME, and MSYSTEM, then starts the actual program. This architecture explains why two paths can appear during troubleshooting and why replacing one file rarely repairs the installation.

What happens when you run git switch
The command-line text is normally parsed by Git’s main executable and dispatched to the branch-switching implementation. Depending on the options, Git can move HEAD to an existing branch, create a new branch first, detach at a commit, or create an orphan branch. The command still depends on the rest of the distribution: wrappers must locate the correct runtime, and supporting DLLs and configuration must come from the same installation.
That is why an error naming a file does not necessarily mean that branch data is missing. A failed switch can instead result from Windows selecting an older Git through PATH, a quarantined component, an incomplete update, or a repository path that exceeds Windows’ usual limit. Test the executable independently with git --version and git status before diagnosing the branch itself.
Where Git for Windows keeps wrappers and real programs
A normal 64-bit installation commonly has a wrapper directory such as C:Program FilesGitcmd. The underlying programs are normally under the installation’s usrbin and mingw64bin directories. Older 32-bit installations can use mingw32bin instead.

The exact root can differ if you selected a custom install folder, used a portable distribution, or have more than one Git copy. The important relationship is that the wrapper and its supporting DLLs come from one intentional installation.
Is git-switch.exe safe?
There is no universal official hash published for a standalone file named git-switch.exe that can settle every case. Assess the particular file on your computer using four checks.
1. Check the complete path
A file inside the Git installation you deliberately installed is more credible than one in a browser-download folder, a temporary directory, a profile subfolder, or an unrelated Windows system directory. A surprising path is a reason to investigate, not proof of malware: some applications bundle Git or use a custom installation location.

2. Check the publisher and signature
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. The signer, signature status, and file location should make sense together. An absent signature is not by itself a verdict, because not every component is presented identically across releases, but an invalid signature or an unexpected signer warrants isolation and reinstallation.
3. Check the Git version
Run git --version from the same terminal that produced the error. An old version, a version you did not install, or different versions returned by different terminals indicate an installation or PATH problem that should be resolved before you trust the executable.
4. Check how it arrived
If you installed Git for Windows from its official installation page, keep the installer provenance and use that source again. Do not obtain a replacement EXE from an unofficial download site. A complete installer keeps wrappers, DLLs, and runtime components matched.
Why version checking matters
Git’s security history makes updating part of the safety check. The project’s advisory index lists multiple 2026 advisories, and earlier advisories describe exploitable behavior in older releases.

These advisories do not mean that every Git executable is malicious. They do mean that an unmaintained installation deserves an update and that GUI operations should not be performed casually in repositories obtained from untrusted sources.
Capture evidence before changing anything
Record every Git path and the active version. This distinguishes a missing file from a PATH conflict and gives you evidence if security software has quarantined a component.

PowerShell
- Open a new PowerShell window and run
git --version. - Run
Get-Command gitto see the command currently selected by PowerShell. - Run
Get-Command git -Allto list every matching command that PowerShell can find. - If an error names a particular file, inspect that exact path in File Explorer and note its parent folder, file version, and signature status.
Command Prompt
- Open a new Command Prompt window and run
git --version. - Run
where gitto list everygit.exefound through PATH. - Record the order of the returned paths. Windows uses the first suitable match.
Run these commands in the environment where the failure occurs. An IDE, scheduled task, service, and terminal can each have a different PATH inherited from the time it was started.
Match the symptom to the right repair

Choose the least disruptive remedy that matches the evidence. A PATH edit changes which existing installation runs; a configuration change affects behavior but does not replace files; a full reinstall replaces the distribution and is appropriate when wrappers, DLLs, or signatures cannot be trusted.
Fix a missing command or PATH conflict
Remove stale entries and put the intended installation first
- Close terminals, editors, and IDEs that use Git.
- Open Windows Search, type environment variables, and select Edit the system environment variables.
- In System Properties, choose Environment Variables.
- Under User variables and, if necessary, System variables, select Path and choose Edit.
- Remove entries for installations you no longer use, or move the intended Git wrapper directory, commonly
C:Program FilesGitcmd, above obsolete Git entries. - Confirm the dialogs, open a completely new terminal, and run
where gitorGet-Command git -Allagain. - Run
git --versionand verify that the selected version belongs to the installation you intended.
Do not delete random files from usrbin or mingw64bin to “clean up” duplicates. If you cannot identify which installation owns a DLL or wrapper, a complete reinstall is safer than manual mixing.
Repair or reinstall Git for Windows
Reinstalling the full distribution is the appropriate response to missing wrappers, mismatched DLLs, unexplained startup errors, or a file that has been quarantined. It also removes uncertainty created by copying individual executables.
- Save or commit any work in progress. Reinstalling Git does not normally delete repositories, but closing applications first avoids files being held open.
- Uninstall obsolete Git for Windows entries from Settings > Apps > Installed apps if you have multiple copies. If you need to preserve a known-good installation temporarily, identify it first with
where git. - Download the current installer from the official Git for Windows installation page. The project warns that the
Git.Gitwinget package is not maintained by the Git for Windows project and may differ from the latest official version. - Run the installer and keep the default installation folder unless you have a documented reason to use another one.
- Finish setup, then open a new terminal. Environment variables already loaded by an existing window will not update automatically.
- Run
git --versionandwhere git. Confirm that the path points to the new installation and that the wrapper and supporting folders are under the same Git root. - Retry the original
git switchoperation. If the repository itself is damaged, the executable repair will not fix repository data; test with a trusted repository to separate those problems.
Never replace only one EXE downloaded from another site. Git’s wrappers, DLLs, and runtime components are versioned as a set, so a loose replacement can create a new incompatibility or conceal a tampered file.
Fix long-path errors that appear during git switch
Windows limits paths to 260 characters by default in many situations. Git for Windows documents core.longpaths=true for operations affected by that limit. This setting addresses a path-length failure; it does not repair a missing executable, validate a suspicious file, or remove malware.

- Open a terminal using the Git installation you verified.
- Run
git config --global core.longpaths true. - Retry the checkout or branch switch.
- If it still fails, identify the exact path in the error. Shorten the repository’s parent directory, remove unnecessary nested folders, or rename an offending file when that is safe for the project.
Changing the global setting affects future repositories for that Windows user. Coordinate with a project’s build and deployment rules before renaming tracked paths.

- Do not run the flagged file to see whether it “works.”
- Allow the security product to quarantine it, and record the complete path, detection name, and time.
- Check whether the path belongs to the Git installation you intended. A copy in a temporary or download folder deserves greater suspicion than one under that installation.
- Obtain a fresh, complete Git for Windows installer from the official source and reinstall rather than restoring a loose executable.
- Update Git after reinstalling and rerun the security scan.
If the detection returns after a clean reinstall, stop using that installation and investigate the system with your security software or an administrator. Do not add a broad exclusion merely to suppress the alert.
Reduce repository and GUI risk
Keep Git current because the project publishes security fixes. Treat repositories from unknown sources as untrusted, especially when opening GUI tools or allowing hooks and build scripts to run. The historical gitk issue patched in 2.39.2 is a reminder that the current directory can be part of an attack path in vulnerable versions. Updating reduces known exposure, but it does not make an untrusted repository trustworthy.
- Clone unknown projects into a disposable location rather than beside sensitive work.
- Review instructions before running scripts, hooks, or generated commands.
- Use a current Git release and avoid GUI operations in repositories you cannot verify.
- Keep the Git installation and the repository on paths you can identify and audit.
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Downloading a single EXE: a wrapper may depend on DLLs and runtime files from its exact Git release. Copying one file can leave the installation mismatched.
- Editing PATH but reusing an old window: existing terminals and IDEs retain their previous environment. Always open a new process and verify again.
- Assuming every “not found” message is malware: missing PATH entries, stale environment data, and quarantine are more direct explanations that can be tested with the command-location checks.
- Assuming a long filename means the executable is broken: enable
core.longpathsonly when the error identifies a path-length problem. - Trusting an unexpected location because the filename looks familiar: name similarity is not provenance. Path, signature, version, and installer source must agree.
- Running a GUI in an untrusted repository while troubleshooting: update first and isolate the repository; do not use a GUI test as proof that the installation is safe.
Verify that the repair worked
- Open a fresh PowerShell or Command Prompt window.
- Run
git --version; confirm the version is the one you expect. - Run
where gitin Command Prompt orGet-Command git -Allin PowerShell; confirm that an obsolete installation is not first. - In a trusted test repository, run
git status, thengit switch <existing-branch>. - If the test succeeds but the original repository fails, compare the original error with the branches, filenames, hooks, and path lengths in that repository. The remaining problem is probably repository-specific rather than a missing
git-switch.exe.
