git-commit.exe is the Windows executable used by Git’s commit implementation. Most people never launch it directly; they run git commit, and Git for Windows routes that command through wrapper programs and the underlying Git binaries. A copy inside a genuine Git for Windows installation is normally expected. The filename alone, however, does not prove that a copy is safe. Verify its full path, digital signature, installation source and the result of where git before deleting anything.
When a commit fails, the cause is usually a mismatched or conflicting Git installation, a damaged or outdated installation, long-path handling, SSH or hook configuration, permissions, security software quarantine, or repository/index state. The sequence below separates those cases without destroying your repository or the commit message you already wrote.

What git-commit.exe actually is
Git’s normal user-facing command on Windows is git commit. That command creates a new commit from the changes staged in the repository. git-commit.exe is part of the implementation that performs the commit operation; it is not a separate product that you need to download or start from a shortcut.

The project’s documentation explains that its visible entry points, including git-bash.exe, cmdgit.exe and binbash.exe, are not the actual binaries that implement all of Git’s functionality. The wrappers set environment variables and arrange the program search path before launching the appropriate Git executable. Consequently, a valid git-commit.exe can appear to be broken when a different Git, Unix utility or environment variable is being selected first.

A normal installation places the executable somewhere below the Git for Windows installation directory. The exact folder can differ between a standard installer, a portable package and a 32-bit or 64-bit setup, so the path must be considered together with the installation you intentionally chose.
Is git-commit.exe safe?
It is consistent with a legitimate Git installation when all of the following are true:
- The full path is under the Git for Windows directory you installed, rather than a temporary, browser-download or unrelated application folder.
- The file’s Properties dialog shows a plausible digital signature from the software publisher.
where gitandgit --versionresolve to that same installation when run in the shell that reports the error.- You obtained Git from the official Git for Windows installer or portable package, not an unverified repackage.
A same-named executable in %TEMP%, a download directory or an application that has nothing to do with Git deserves a malware scan and signature review before you run or remove it. Do not assume that deleting a suspicious file is harmless: another program may have placed it there, and removing the wrong copy can make diagnosis harder.

Git for Windows also publishes security advisories, including advisories involving credential helpers, NTLM handling, bundle URIs and Git CMD. Keeping the installation current is therefore both a troubleshooting and a security measure. Packages exposed through Windows package managers can be convenient, but the project notes that winget and Chocolatey packages are not maintained by the Git for Windows project and may differ from its official build.
Check the path and signature without deleting anything
- Open the same shell in which the failure occurs: Git Bash, PowerShell or Command Prompt.
- Run
where git. Record every path returned, in order. Multiple results indicate that PATH order may be selecting an unintended installation. - Run
git --versionand record the complete version string. - In File Explorer, open the installation directory represented by the selected path and locate the related executable. Right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab.
- Compare the path, version and signature with the installation you intended to use. Preserve screenshots or copied text if you need to contact support or investigate a suspicious file.
Why commits fail on Windows
Different symptoms point to different layers. Treating every failure as a corrupt executable often leads to unnecessary deletion or a lost repository state.

Preserve evidence and your commit message first
Copy the complete error text, the command that produced it and the current directory before changing settings. Avoid deleting the .git directory, resetting the repository or recloning until you know whether the problem is the executable, the index or a hook.
The upstream git commit manual states that if the command exits with an error before creating a commit, a message entered by the user, including text still in an editor session, remains available in Git’s message file. It will be overwritten by the next invocation of git commit. Save that text externally before retrying if the message matters. Git also treats path names as byte sequences, with Windows-specific conversions, and documents warnings for non-UTF-8 commit messages; record those warnings rather than dismissing them as an executable failure.

1. Reproduce the failure in the correct shell
Open the shell that fails and move to the repository. Run the same command once, then copy the entire output. If Git Bash works but PowerShell or Command Prompt fails, or vice versa, that difference is evidence of a shell-specific PATH or environment problem rather than proof that git-commit.exe is malicious.
2. Resolve the Git installation
Run:
where git
git --versionIf more than one path is listed, note which one appears first. The Git for Windows wrapper intentionally puts Git’s own tools first; another Git installation or Unix tool earlier in PATH can produce misleading errors. Temporarily test the intended installation by opening its Git Bash shortcut or by correcting the system and user PATH entries so the intended cmdgit.exe is first. Restart the shell after editing PATH; an already-open terminal retains its old environment.
3. Verify the executable and installation source
Follow the path resolved in step 2, inspect the executable’s Properties and Digital Signatures, and compare the version with the release you expect. If the path is in a temporary or unrelated directory, disconnect that copy from PATH and scan it before taking further action. Do not overwrite a suspicious file with a random download; use the official Git for Windows installer or portable package.

4. Update Git for Windows
For an existing installation, the FAQ-supported updater command is:

git update-git-for-windowsRun it from the intended installation. If the command is unavailable, the updater fails, or the installation is not trusted, download the current official installer or portable package from the Git for Windows project instead. The reviewed release page lists version 2.56.0, dated October 5, 2026; availability can change, so confirm the current release when you perform the repair.
5. Choose repair or reinstall deliberately

Before uninstalling, export or record any nondefault PATH entries and Git configuration you rely on. Repositories are separate from the program files, but a careless cleanup or reset can still remove local work. After reinstalling, open a new terminal and repeat where git and git --version.
6. Test with a clean repository
Create or use a disposable test repository in a short, local path and perform a minimal commit. If the clean repository succeeds while the original fails, stop reinstalling Git and investigate the original repository’s hooks, index, permissions, path names and available disk space. If every repository fails in every shell, return to installation and PATH checks.
7. Fix long-path errors
Git for Windows documents that long paths are disabled by default. When supported operations fail with a filename-too-long or checkout/commit path error, inspect the setting:

git config --show-origin --get core.longpathsEnabling the property allows supported Git operations to handle long paths:
git config --global core.longpaths trueUse the repository’s documented policy before changing a global setting, and reopen tools that cache Git configuration. Shortening the working-tree location can also reduce path length. This setting does not make every Windows program path-aware, so a failure in another tool may remain after Git succeeds.
8. Correct SSH-related environment problems
If the failure involves SSH authentication, ensure Git’s provided OpenSSH directory is first on PATH and that the required SSH_AGENT_PID and SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment variables are present for the shell and account that runs Git. A shell launched before those variables were set will not see later changes; close it and open a new one. Test the same command from the shell where the variables and PATH are correct, then compare the result with the failing shell.
9. Check hooks, permissions, quarantine and disk space
- Hooks: A repository hook can abort a commit even when the executable is healthy. Inspect the repository’s hook configuration and preserve the hook’s exact error before changing or bypassing it.
- Permissions: Confirm that your account can read and write the repository, its index and the directory where Git stores temporary commit data. A protected or network location can behave differently from a local test folder.
- Security quarantine: Review the antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine log if
git-commit.exevanished after installation. Verify the publisher signature and installation source before restoring anything. - Disk space: Check free space on the volume containing both the repository and the relevant temporary directories. A full disk can interrupt index or commit-file writes.
These checks are independent: clearing disk space will not correct a PATH conflict, and changing PATH will not repair a repository hook.

10. Review release notes and known Windows issues
After updating, read the current Git for Windows release notes and search the project’s issue tracker using the exact error text, Git version, Windows edition and shell. Include whether the failure occurs in a clean repository, the output of where git, and the installation source. This information distinguishes a known Windows-specific regression from a local configuration problem.
Installer, portable package and shell choices
The safest option depends on how you manage Windows, not on a claim that one package is universally better.

For a fair comparison, run where git and git --version in each shell and record the results separately.
Symptom-based decisions
The error appears immediately in every repository
Prioritize where git, the file path, the signature, PATH order and an update or reinstall. A clean test repository that fails identically supports an installation-level diagnosis.

Only one repository fails
Preserve the error and commit message, then inspect hooks, permissions, index state, path lengths, disk space and non-UTF-8 path or message warnings. Do not remove .git or reset until local work is backed up.
The error mentions a long filename
Check core.longpaths, enable it when appropriate, and consider moving the working tree closer to the drive root. Re-test the exact path that failed.
Git Bash succeeds but another shell fails
Compare PATH and environment variables. The wrapper’s intentional PATH changes may be masking a conflicting executable. Correct the shell’s PATH, open a new terminal and verify with where git.
The file was quarantined or is outside Git’s directory
Do not run it. Preserve its path and metadata, scan it, verify its signature and obtain a clean official package. A filename match is not a trust decision.
