The Nifty 50 is the benchmark equity index those contracts relate to. In short: GIFT Nifty is tradable; the Nifty 50 is an index. GIFT Nifty can provide an overnight reference for market sentiment, but it does not guarantee how the Nifty 50 will open.
What is GIFT Nifty?
GIFT Nifty is the name for Nifty-linked derivative contracts traded on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City. It is not a second version of the Nifty 50 index. NSE describes Nifty 50 futures as contracts based on the Nifty 50 index, while its GIFT Nifty announcement describes derivative contracts traded on NSE IX. NSE’s Nifty 50 F&O page and NSE’s GIFT Nifty announcement set out those distinctions.

How are GIFT Nifty and the Nifty 50 different?
| Comparison | GIFT Nifty | Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Nifty-linked derivative contracts | A benchmark equity index; it is the underlying named in NSE’s Nifty 50 futures specification |
| Where it trades or is used | Contracts trade on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City | The index is a benchmark for the Indian domestic equity market; it is not itself a futures contract |
| Trading access | NSE described almost 21 hours of access at the 2023 launch; current sessions can change | An index level, not a derivative trading session |
| How to read it | A live derivatives-market reference that can reflect information when the domestic cash market is closed | The benchmark level of the underlying index |
NSE’s 2023 announcement describes GIFT Nifty derivatives as dollar-denominated. Current contract specifications, including lot size and settlement terms, should be checked with the exchange rather than assumed from an older description. NSE notes that permitted lot sizes may change.
Why is it called GIFT Nifty?
Nifty derivatives had previously traded on the Singapore Exchange. NSE reported that they moved to NSE IX and were renamed GIFT Nifty. NSE’s milestones record the GIFT Connect operations and the GIFT Nifty identity launch in fiscal year 2023–2024. This was a change of venue and product identity, not the creation of a new benchmark index.
Does GIFT Nifty predict the Nifty 50 opening?
It can serve as an overnight indication: its prices show where Nifty-linked derivatives are trading outside the domestic cash-market window. That is useful context, not a forecast guarantee. The official exchange information establishes the relationship between the contracts and the index, but does not establish a forecast-accuracy rate or prove that the Nifty 50 must open in the same direction.
Prices can move before the domestic market opens, and a futures price is not the same observation as the Nifty 50 spot index. A meaningful price comparison should identify whether it is comparing GIFT Nifty futures with the spot index or with domestic Nifty futures, and should name the contract expiry and observation time. There is no universal fixed price gap established by the exchange pages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long does GIFT Nifty trade?
When GIFT Nifty launched in 2023, NSE described access as “almost 21 hours,” overlapping Asian, European and US trading hours. Treat that as a launch-era description, not a permanent timetable. An NSE IX FAQ dated 2024 lists market hours of 06:30 to 02:45 the next day, Indian Standard Time; because schedules can change, check NSE IX’s current trading-hours page or latest circular before relying on exact session times or holidays.
