Instead of following Jin Sakai’s grounded campaign, it tells supernatural tales rooted in Japanese folklore and lets players fight together—or compete—using one of four specialized classes. You can play two-player Story missions, four-player Survival and Raid activities, or two-team Rivals matches.
What Ghost of Tsushima: Legends actually is
Legends is a separate multiplayer experience set in the same broad world as Ghost of Tsushima, but its tone is deliberately mythic. The stories are presented by Gyozen the Storyteller, whose accounts lead players into encounters with supernatural enemies and locations inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology. It is not a second version of Jin Sakai’s single-player campaign and does not replace that campaign.

The mode is built around online parties, character classes and equipment-based progression. You choose a Samurai, Hunter, Ronin or Assassin, then earn gear, techniques, perks, abilities and cosmetic items by completing activities. Your equipped gear determines a numerical Ki rating, the game’s measure of player power.
There are four main activities. Story and Survival are cooperative missions, Raid is a coordinated four-player challenge, and Rivals is a competitive race between two teams. Party size and objectives change substantially between them, so the best starting point depends on whether you want narrative missions, wave defense, a demanding group puzzle or player-versus-player competition.

The four Legends modes at a glance
| Mode | Party format | What you do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story | Two players | Complete mythic co-op missions | Players who want a guided narrative and a smaller party |
| Survival | Four players | Defend locations against enemy waves and complete bonus objectives | Teams that enjoy escalating combat and endurance |
| Raid | Four players | Complete a coordinated, three-part adventure in Iyo’s realm | Organized groups with strong gear and reliable communication |
| Rivals | Two teams of two | Race through waves, spend Magatama to hinder the opposing team and finish Final Stand waves first | Players who prefer competition over pure co-operation |
The party sizes above are game rules documented in PlayStation’s current overview, not estimates of the active player population.
Story: two-player mythic missions
Story missions are designed for two people. Each chapter follows one of Gyozen’s supernatural tales and presents objectives, combat encounters and exploration in a more controlled sequence than the wave modes. Difficulty tiers increase the strength and variety of enemies, add tougher encounters and introduce bonus objectives. Higher difficulty therefore provides a reason to replay chapters after you have learned their basic layouts.
Story is the most approachable way to learn a class, understand how abilities interact and begin replacing starter equipment. A partner can cover a second role—such as pairing a melee-focused Samurai with a ranged Hunter—without requiring a full four-person group.
Survival: four-player defense
Survival puts four players together to defend locations from successive enemy waves. The team must move between threatened areas, defeat attackers and keep the defense from collapsing. Bonus objectives appear during the activity; completing them and surviving longer increases the rewards earned at the end.
Because enemies arrive repeatedly, Survival emphasizes role coverage and positioning more than a single burst of damage. A team that can hold a location, revive safely and answer both close-range and ranged threats will generally have an easier time than four players using identical builds.

Raid: a three-part test in Iyo’s realm
Raid is a four-player adventure set in Iyo’s realm and divided into three parts. PlayStation describes it as requiring top-tier gear, teamwork and communication. Unlike a quick match, it is intended for a prepared group that can coordinate movement, combat responsibilities and problem-solving across the entire run.
The top-tier gear requirement matters because Raid is not simply another queue at the same difficulty as early Story missions. Build your Ki rating through other activities first, and make sure every player understands their abilities and can communicate before attempting it.

Rivals: competitive co-op against another team
Rivals has two teams of two fighting through enemy waves at the same time. Defeated enemies provide Magatama, a resource that your team spends to hinder the other team. Spending Magatama also unlocks the Final Stand waves. The first team to complete those final waves wins.
This structure makes Rivals more than a race to defeat enemies quickly. Your team must decide when to spend Magatama, whether to accelerate your own progress or obstruct the opponents, and how to preserve enough momentum for Final Stand. It is competitive, but the combat itself remains class-based and cooperative within each pair.
How the four classes differ
| Class | Primary role | Signature ultimate or ability | Choose it if you enjoy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samurai | Front-line combat | Hachiman’s Fury | Staying in the fight and defeating enemies at close range |
| Hunter | Ranged damage | Eye of Uchitsune, an arrow volley | Picking targets from distance and using explosive arrows |
| Ronin | Support and recovery | An ultimate that can revive the whole team; can summon a Spirit Dog | Keeping a group alive and creating opportunities to recover |
| Assassin | Stealth and burst damage | Shadow Strike, a teleporting attack | Approaching unseen, isolating targets and ending fights quickly |
Samurai
The Samurai is the straightforward front-line option. Its design favors remaining in combat, absorbing pressure and dealing dependable close-range damage. Hachiman’s Fury is the class ultimate identified by PlayStation’s official description. Choose Samurai when you want the team’s attention on you rather than on setting up elaborate ranged or stealth attacks.

Hunter
Hunter specializes in ranged attacks and explosive arrows. Eye of Uchitsune unleashes a volley of arrows, allowing the class to remove priority targets or soften a wave before it reaches the defense line. Hunter is a natural fit for players who prefer distance, target selection and careful positioning over trading blows at close range.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ronin
Ronin is the dedicated support class. Its ultimate can revive the entire team, and the class can summon a Spirit Dog. Those tools give a group additional recovery options when several players are down or a defense position has been overwhelmed. Ronin is especially valuable in difficult activities where one failed revive can end a run.
Assassin
Assassin combines stealth, agility and high damage. Shadow Strike is its teleporting attack, letting the class rapidly reach a target. Assassin suits players who enjoy choosing an opening, eliminating a dangerous enemy and repositioning before the rest of the wave reacts.
Progression, difficulty and Ki
Legends progression is tied to the activities you complete and the equipment you earn. Missions can award gear, techniques, perks, abilities and cosmetics. Gear is not merely visual: your equipped items contribute to your Ki rating, which represents your character’s power and helps determine whether you are ready for more demanding content.
PlayStation describes difficulty tiers running from bronze through gold, along with weekly Nightmare challenges. Lower tiers are useful for learning a class and assembling equipment. Gold and Nightmare activities provide tougher encounters and better reasons to refine a build, coordinate cooldowns and specialize your role.

There is no official player-population figure in the published PlayStation material used for this explanation. Claims that Legends is currently “packed,” “dying” or otherwise popular would require current platform data that is not provided here.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
The standalone PlayStation listing says PS4 and PS5 players can play together. It also says Legends progression carries over between those two console versions. The current US PlayStation overview states that an internet connection and PlayStation Plus are required to download and play Legends on PlayStation.
If you already own another PlayStation version of Ghost of Tsushima, the overview says you can access Legends without an additional Legends charge. The exact edition you own still matters for what else is included: the standalone release contains the online multiplayer mode but not the single-player campaign.
PC
The PC Director’s Cut includes Legends. The PlayStation announcement for the PC release says PC players can play with PS4 and PS5 players by inviting friends through PlayStation Network, and that a PlayStation Network account is required to access Legends. Steam lists “Legends Unlock” as free downloadable content that requires the base Director’s Cut.
That documented arrangement should not be expanded into a blanket promise that every matchmaking queue or every platform combination behaves identically. The published PC condition specifically describes inviting friends through PSN, so check the current game and platform account prompts when organizing a cross-platform session.

| Platform or purchase route | What is included | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost of Tsushima on PS4 or PS5 | Access to Legends in an owned version of the game | Internet connection and PlayStation Plus are required on PlayStation, according to the current US overview |
| Standalone Legends on PS4/PS5 | Legends multiplayer only | Single-player campaign is not included; PS4 and PS5 players can play together and progression carries between those versions |
| Director’s Cut on PC | Legends included with the base game | PlayStation Network account required; the documented PC cross-play method uses PSN invitations |
| Steam “Legends Unlock” | Free DLC entitlement | Requires the PC Director’s Cut base game |
What does Legends cost?
Pricing depends on whether you already own a qualifying version of Ghost of Tsushima and which platform you use. PlayStation’s 2021 standalone announcement recorded a $19.99 launch price. That is a historical launch figure, not a guaranteed current price.
The current US PlayStation page displayed a standalone Legends entry at $19.99 with a “Trial” label when checked, but that storefront presentation is ambiguous and should not be treated as a verified current purchase price. Confirm the live listing, region, edition and any trial terms before buying.
On PC, the published arrangement is different: the Director’s Cut is the base product, and Steam identifies Legends Unlock as free DLC requiring that base game. On PlayStation, buying the standalone version gives you Legends but not the single-player campaign; buying a full edition gives you both the campaign and multiplayer.
How to choose your first activity
- Start with Story if you are new. Its two-player format is easier to organize, and the mission structure gives you time to learn your class and equipment.
- Move to Survival for a four-person combat test. Choose it when you want repeated waves, location defense and bonus objectives rather than a linear chapter.
- Prepare for Raid only after building your Ki. The official description calls for top-tier gear, teamwork and communication, so it is better suited to an organized group than a first session.
- Choose Rivals for competition. Bring one teammate, defeat waves, manage Magatama spending and race the opposing pair through Final Stand.
Your class choice should match the team’s needs, not just personal damage preference. Samurai can hold the front, Hunter can pressure enemies at range, Ronin can recover a collapsing team and Assassin can remove high-value targets. A mixed group also makes it easier to respond when a mode changes the pressure from one location or wave to another.
What Legends is—and is not
- It is: an online mode with cooperative Story, Survival and Raid activities, plus the competitive Rivals format.
- It is: a supernatural interpretation of the setting presented through Gyozen’s tales.
- It is: a class-and-gear progression system with Ki, difficulty tiers from bronze through gold and weekly Nightmare challenges.
- It is not: the single-player campaign with optional co-op added to every mission.
- It is not: a mode with one universal party size; the number of players depends on the activity.
- It is not: guaranteed to have identical cross-play matchmaking behavior in every queue; the PC announcement specifically documents inviting PS4 and PS5 friends through PSN.
Bottom line for prospective players
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is a substantial multiplayer branch of Ghost of Tsushima, not a minor side feature. Its four classes provide distinct jobs, its activities support parties from two to four players, and its equipment-and-Ki system gives repeated missions a clear progression path. Choose Story to learn the format, Survival for wave defense, Raid for a coordinated endgame-style challenge, or Rivals when you want to race another team. Check your platform edition carefully: the standalone PlayStation release omits the campaign, while the PC Director’s Cut includes Legends and requires a PlayStation Network account for access.
