What Is gettube.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix gettube.exe Errors on Windows

gettube.exe has no established identity as a Microsoft component or as a documented vendor program. The filename alone cannot prove that it is safe or malicious. Treat it as an unknown executable: do not open it, check its complete path and digital signature, scan it with Windows Security, and remove the associated application only after you understand what installed it.

What is gettube.exe?

Windows executable files use the .exe extension, but a familiar-looking name does not identify the publisher or purpose. No authoritative record establishes who publishes gettube.exe, what it is supposed to do, which version is legitimate, what its cryptographic hash should be, or which installation package it belongs to. There is also no reliable evidence that every file with this name is the same program.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That uncertainty matters because two files can have the same filename while coming from completely different sources. One could be an optional component bundled with an application; another could be an unwanted program placed in a user profile, temporary folder, removable drive, or startup location. A renamed malicious file can use almost any ordinary-sounding name.

Microsoft’s guidance is that uncommon software is not automatically malicious, but unknown software carries greater risk for typical users. Therefore, neither “gettube.exe is definitely a virus” nor “gettube.exe is safe” is justified without examining the specific file on your PC.

Is gettube.exe safe?

Safety depends on evidence tied to your copy of the file. Use all of the following checks together rather than relying on the name.

Check the complete file path

In File Explorer, right-click the process or file and choose Open file location when that option is available. A path under a clearly identified program’s installation folder is easier to explain than a file in a temporary directory, a random folder under your user profile, or an unfamiliar removable drive. Location is a warning signal, not a verdict: legitimate software can use different folders, and malware can imitate a legitimate path.

Check the publisher signature

Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Record the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. A missing, invalid, or unknown signer warrants caution, but a signature by itself does not prove that the program is harmless. Verify that the signer makes sense for the application that installed the file.

Record file details before changing anything

Write down the full path, file size, creation or modification time, parent application, and any detection name shown by Windows Security. If you need assistance, these details let a technician or Microsoft analyze the exact object instead of guessing from a filename.

Scan before opening, deleting, or allowing it

Do not double-click an unexpected copy, do not add a Windows Security exclusion merely to stop an alert, and do not whitelist it because a pop-up claims it is required. Scan the file or its containing folder first, then run a system-wide scan if the file is connected to an unknown application or recurring alert.

Why might gettube.exe keep appearing?

A recurring message generally means that Windows, a scheduled component, or an installed application is trying to launch the file again. The filename does not reveal which explanation applies. Common routes for unwanted software include:

  • Bundled installers in which an optional component was accepted along with another program.
  • An attachment delivered through a suspicious or unexpected email.
  • A file copied from an unknown USB stick or other removable drive.
  • A download from a compromised webpage or an unofficial software source.
  • A program that registered itself to start with Windows and now cannot find, or cannot safely run, one of its files.

A missing-file dialog after an uninstall can indicate a stale startup entry, while a security alert or a process that returns after reboot needs malware-focused investigation. Do not infer the cause until you have checked the path, the parent application, and scan results.

Safe first response: isolate and document

  1. Do not run the file. If it arrived unexpectedly or Windows Security quarantined it, leave it quarantined. Do not restore it just to test whether an error disappears.
  2. Disconnect only when appropriate. If you see signs of active compromise, such as repeated security alerts or suspicious network activity, disconnect from the internet while preserving the evidence. Do not delete the file before recording its location and detection details.
  3. Capture the context. Note when the message appears, what you were doing, the exact wording, the file path, and the application or drive associated with it. A screenshot can help, but do not click links or phone numbers in a warning.
  4. Use an administrator account only when required. Elevation may be needed for scans or uninstalling software, but approve prompts only when you recognize the Windows action you started.

How to scan gettube.exe with Windows Security

Update security intelligence

Open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, and choose Protection updates followed by Check for updates. Current security intelligence improves the chance of recognizing newly classified unwanted software.

Scan the file or folder

In File Explorer, right-click gettube.exe or the folder that contains it and choose the Windows Security scan command. If the context-menu command is unavailable, open Windows Security and start a custom scan that includes the file’s location. Wait for the result; do not assume that a clean quick check clears the entire PC.

Run a full scan

In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A full scan is the appropriate built-in check when unwanted software is suspected because it examines files and running locations beyond the single executable. The duration varies with the amount of data and the speed of the drive, so keep the PC connected to power and avoid interrupting the scan.

Follow the result, not the pop-up

If Windows Security quarantines or removes the file, restart Windows and scan again. Record the detection name and affected path. If it reports no threat but the file still launches, continue with the application and startup checks below; a clean scan does not establish the file’s publisher or intended function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use Microsoft Defender Offline

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the detection returns after reboot, the file cannot be removed while Windows is running, or the system behaves as though a process is protecting itself. Offline scanning restarts the computer and examines it outside the normal Windows environment, which can prevent a running threat from hiding or recreating files.

Save open work first. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and start it. Windows will restart and perform the scan before the normal desktop loads. Afterward, return to Protection history to review the action and rescan if the alert persists.

Remove the application that installed it

If the path and file details tie gettube.exe to an unwanted or unknown application, remove that application rather than deleting one executable and leaving its startup tasks behind.

Try Repair or Reset first for a recognized app

For a program you recognize and have verified as legitimate, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Select the application’s three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and use Repair if available. Repair attempts to correct the installation without removing its data. If that does not resolve the error, Reset reinstalls or reinitializes the app and may remove its local data, so read Windows’ warning before confirming.

Uninstall an unwanted or unnecessary app

From Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application and choose Uninstall. If malware is suspected, complete the Defender scan and any required offline cleanup before uninstalling; removing a visible program first can leave a malicious startup component behind. Restart Windows after the uninstall and check whether the message returns.

Reinstall only from a trusted source

If a legitimate application is damaged, download its replacement from the software publisher’s official website or the Microsoft Store. Avoid “DLL fixer,” cracked-software, and unofficial driver or codec packages offered by search results. A new installer from an unverified source can recreate the same problem.

How to stop gettube.exe from starting with Windows

Do this only after scanning and identifying the associated program. Disabling an entry can stop a symptom while leaving the underlying file in place, and disabling a security component can reduce protection.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps. Sort by name or startup impact and look for an entry that points to gettube.exe or to the same unfamiliar parent application.
  3. Right-click the entry and choose Open file location to verify the path. If it belongs to an unwanted program, uninstall that program rather than merely disabling startup.
  4. If the entry is clearly unwanted and the file has already been quarantined or removed, choose Disable, restart Windows, and confirm that no error appears.

Do not delete random registry values or startup folders based only on the filename. If the startup entry returns, run Defender Offline and review the installed-app list again instead of repeatedly disabling it.

Other ways to investigate a recurring error

If Windows says the file is missing

A missing-file dialog can be a leftover startup reference after an incomplete uninstall. Identify the startup entry’s path and parent application, then uninstall or repair that application. Do not download a replacement gettube.exe from a file-collection website; there is no verified public package that establishes what this filename should contain.

If the application crashes

Restart Windows, apply pending Windows updates, and use Repair or Reset for the recognized application under Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If the crash continues, uninstall the application and reinstall it from its official source. A crash alone does not prove malware, but a recurring security detection changes the priority to scanning and containment.

If the warning displays a phone number

Close the window without calling. Microsoft states that its error and warning messages do not include phone numbers. Treat a number, remote-support request, or demand for payment as a likely technical-support scam. Use Windows Security directly from the Start menu instead of clicking a warning’s links.

Cleanup choices compared

Option Built into Windows? Scans before deletion? Runs outside normal Windows? Primary purpose
Defender file or folder scan Yes Yes; you review the detection action No Check the specific executable or its folder
Microsoft Defender Full scan Yes Yes No Search the system for malware and potentially unwanted software
Microsoft Defender Offline Yes Yes Yes; the PC restarts for the scan Investigate threats that persist, resist removal, or hide while Windows is running
Repair or Reset Yes, for supported apps No; it changes application state No Correct a damaged legitimate installation
Uninstall Yes, through Installed apps No; scan first when malware is suspected No Remove the associated application and its registered components

Microsoft Safety Scanner and the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) are additional Microsoft options, but they serve different roles. MSRT is an on-demand tool aimed at specific prevalent threats and is not a replacement for comprehensive, real-time antivirus protection. Microsoft also directs users toward Defender Offline or Safety Scanner for broader checks. Use a current Defender installation as the primary protection and treat these tools as supplementary investigations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

  • Do not assume the filename is a Microsoft file or a trusted component.
  • Do not run an unexpected copy to see what happens.
  • Do not add an exclusion simply because an alert is inconvenient.
  • Do not delete the executable before recording its path and scan result if you may need to investigate the source.
  • Do not download a replacement executable, DLL, or “one-click fix” from an unverified website.
  • Do not disable Windows Security, firewall protections, or startup entries whose publisher you have not verified.
  • Do not call a phone number shown in a Windows-style error message.

When to escalate

Escalate if Defender and another reputable scanner disagree, if the file regenerates after an Offline scan, if new administrator accounts or security changes appear, or if you cannot determine which application owns the file. Preserve the path, hash if available, signature details, detection name, and timeline. Microsoft accepts submissions of unknown software for analysis; a file can later receive a malware or potentially unwanted application classification as more information becomes available.

For a work or school computer, contact the organization’s IT team before removing software. On a personal computer with signs of account compromise, change important passwords from a different trusted device after the system is contained, and enable multifactor authentication where available.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Unexpected file? Do not run it; leave it quarantined or isolated.
  2. Unknown path or signer? Treat the file as higher risk and record the details.
  3. Security alert? Update security intelligence, scan the file or folder, and run a Full scan.
  4. Threat persists or returns? Run Microsoft Defender Offline.
  5. Recognized legitimate app but it crashes? Try Repair, then Reset, then reinstall from the official source.
  6. Unknown or unwanted app? Remove it from Installed apps after completing malware-focused checks.
  7. Startup message remains? Inspect Task Manager’s Startup apps and remove the owning application rather than downloading a replacement executable.
  8. Evidence still conflicts? Submit the file to Microsoft or ask qualified IT support to examine the recorded details.

Bottom line on gettube.exe

There is no authoritative public identity for gettube.exe, so the safest answer is “unknown,” not “safe” and not “confirmed malware.” Verify its path and signature, scan it with updated Windows Security, use Defender Offline when it survives or returns, and repair or uninstall the associated application through Windows’ Installed apps settings. Never obtain a replacement copy from an unverified download site, and do not trust a Windows-style warning that asks you to call a phone number.

If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, check vulnerabilities, and provide tools such as real-time boost and crash logging. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It supports Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a category-based free trial of at least two days followed by a subscription.
