What Is geradrel.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix geradrel.exe Errors on Windows

geradrel.exe has no verified public identity as a Microsoft component, legitimate vendor program, or named malware family. Treat the copy on your PC as unknown. Do not open it to “see what happens.” Its safety depends on the file’s location, publisher signature, cryptographic hash, parent application, and security detections—not on the filename alone.

What geradrel.exe means on Windows

The .exe ending only means that Windows recognizes the file as an executable program. It does not identify who made the program or whether it is safe. The exact name geradrel.exe has no established identity in the available Microsoft or security references, so Windows users should not assume that it is a normal system file.

That uncertainty cuts both ways. The filename alone does not prove malware, but it also provides no reason to trust the file. A malicious program can use an invented name or imitate a familiar-looking one. A damaged or missing component from a legitimate application can also produce an error mentioning a filename that has little public documentation.

Your first task is attribution: determine which copy Windows is referring to, where it came from, what application launched it, and what its digital and antivirus checks report.

Is geradrel.exe safe?

There is no honest yes-or-no answer based only on the name. Use several independent signals and treat them as evidence rather than proof.

Check What supports a legitimate file What should increase caution
Full path A location inside a known application’s installation folder, obtained from its official installer A temporary folder, a user profile subfolder with a random name, an email attachment, or an unexpected Downloads location
Publisher and signature A valid, current Authenticode signature from the application’s actual publisher No signature, an invalid signature, an unfamiliar signer, or a certificate that does not match the parent application
Hash reputation A SHA-256 hash associated with the same signed file and clean detections Multiple reputable antivirus detections or no trustworthy reputation for a file you did not expect
Parent process A known application launches it as part of a feature you intentionally installed An unknown process, script, scheduled task, or startup entry launches it without an obvious reason
Persistence The file appears only when the verified application runs It returns after quarantine, reboot, or manual removal, suggesting a startup or reinstall mechanism

A familiar folder or a valid-looking filename is not a guarantee. Malware can imitate legitimate names, and a signed file can still be unwanted if you did not authorize the software. Combine the checks before deciding what to do.

Do this before opening or deleting the file

  • Do not execute it. Leave it closed if it is in Downloads, an email attachment, a browser cache, or a temporary folder.
  • Do not immediately delete it. Preserving the file and its context helps Windows Security or a malware-removal specialist identify the source.
  • Disconnect only when appropriate. If the computer is behaving suspiciously or an antivirus product reports a threat, disconnecting from the internet can limit communication while you investigate. Keep the machine powered on if you need to preserve volatile evidence for professional support.
  • Record the alert. Copy the complete error or detection text, the date and time, the full path, the file size, and the application or scheduled task named in the message.

How to identify the copy on your PC

Find the complete path

  1. If a dialog names the file, select any available option that reveals its location, such as Open file location. Do not double-click the executable.
  2. For a running process, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select the process, right-click it, and choose Open file location. If it is not running, do not start it merely to perform this check.
  3. For a startup item, open Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager’s Startup apps page. Note the item name and its command or file location when Windows displays it.
  4. For a scheduled task, open Task Scheduler, inspect the task’s Actions tab, and record the executable path. Do not run the task.

Write down the path exactly, including the drive letter and every folder. A path such as C:Users<account>Downloadsgeradrel.exe tells you something different from a file installed under a verified program’s directory, but neither path is conclusive by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect Properties without launching it

  1. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  2. On General, note the size, creation and modification dates, and whether Windows shows an Unblock option indicating that the file came from another computer or the internet.
  3. On Details, record the product name, description, company, original filename, and version. Blank or inconsistent fields are warning signs, not a final verdict.
  4. On Digital Signatures, select each signature and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer matches the application you expected.

A missing or invalid signature deserves caution. A valid signature is supporting evidence, not a guarantee that the program is desirable or that the file was obtained from a source you trust.

Calculate a SHA-256 hash safely

A hash gives you a precise fingerprint for the exact file you have. It does not execute the program. In PowerShell, open a normal window and run:

Look at the returned Status and signer information. These commands are evidence-gathering steps; they do not establish that the file is safe on their own.

Scan geradrel.exe with Windows Security

Run a targeted scan first

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Scan options.
  3. Choose Custom scan, select the folder containing geradrel.exe, and start the scan.
  4. Allow Windows Security to quarantine a detected file. Do not choose an option that restores or allows it unless you have independently verified the file and understand the risk.

Update protection definitions before scanning: in Virus & threat protection, select Protection updates > Check for updates. If the targeted scan is clean but the behavior continues, run a Full scan so other files and persistence mechanisms are checked.

Use Microsoft Safety Scanner as an additional check

Microsoft documents Microsoft Safety Scanner as an additional malware-removal tool. Download it only from Microsoft’s official site, obtain the current version, and run the scan according to Microsoft’s instructions. Its results are a separate check; they do not replace keeping Windows Security enabled and updated.

The Microsoft threat record for Backdoor:Win32/Geratid.A describes that threat as “a trojan that allows unauthorized access and control of an affected computer.” That record does not identify geradrel.exe as Geratid.A. It does, however, illustrate why an unknown executable that returns after reboot or establishes startup persistence should be investigated rather than ignored.

What to do if Windows Security detects the file

  1. Choose Quarantine or the recommended removal action in Windows Security.
  2. Record the detection name, affected path, and action taken before closing the alert.
  3. Restart only when Windows Security requests it, then run a full scan after the restart.
  4. Check whether the same path or a newly created copy appears again. A return after quarantine can indicate a startup entry, scheduled task, parent application, or another file recreating it.
  5. If detections continue, avoid restoring the file and seek qualified malware-removal assistance with the recorded detection details.

Do not assume that an antivirus label proves the filename’s identity. Detection names often describe behavior or a broader family, while a filename can be changed easily.

Why does geradrel.exe keep popping up?

Repeated dialogs usually mean that something is trying to launch the file each time a trigger occurs. Common triggers include a startup entry, a scheduled task, a Run key, a verified application that is missing one of its files, or malware that recreates itself. The dialog may be an error because Windows cannot find the file, cannot load a required library, or blocks it after a security action.

Check startup entries

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup. Disable an entry that clearly points to the unknown file, but record its name and publisher first.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect the Startup impact, publisher, and command information.
  3. Do not disable a known security product or system component merely because its name is unfamiliar. Verify the path and signer before changing it.

Inspect scheduled tasks

Open Task Scheduler and review Task Scheduler Library and any vendor folders. Select a suspicious task and read its Actions, Triggers, and History tabs. Do not run the task. If its action points to geradrel.exe and no trusted parent application explains it, disable the task temporarily and preserve its name and action details for removal or support.

Review Run keys carefully

Windows can start programs through per-user and machine-wide Run registry keys. Microsoft’s documentation for the related Geratid.A threat shows why this persistence method deserves attention. Editing the registry incorrectly can prevent programs from starting, so export a key before changing it and remove only an entry you have positively attributed to the unwanted file.

How to fix a geradrel.exe error

An error mentioning the filename does not establish that it belongs to Windows. First complete the identity and security checks above. Then choose the branch that matches what you found.

If a trusted application owns the file

  1. Confirm the application’s publisher, installation source, and digital signature.
  2. Check whether the application has an official Repair option in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions).
  3. Use that repair workflow, restart Windows, and test the application.
  4. If repair does not work, uninstall the application through Windows or its own uninstaller, restart, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official source.
  5. Apply the application’s updates after reinstalling. Do not copy an executable from another computer or download a replacement from a random DLL or “fix” site.

Only follow this branch when the parent application and file are verified and security scans do not identify a threat. If the file was quarantined, use the application’s legitimate repair or reinstall process to restore a clean component instead of restoring the quarantined executable manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no trusted parent application can be identified

Do not attempt to repair the file by downloading another copy. Keep the detection and path information, allow security software to quarantine it, and investigate the startup or scheduled mechanism that launched it. If it persists, seek malware-removal support. The available references do not document a legitimate geradrel.exe package or a known error code, so there is no responsible filename-specific repair command to provide.

If Windows says the file is missing

A “file not found” or “missing entry point” message can appear after an antivirus quarantine or an incomplete uninstall. Identify the program that displays the dialog. If that program is trusted, repair or reinstall it from its official installer. Removing a leftover startup entry may stop the message, but do so only after confirming that the entry does not belong to a needed application.

Can you delete geradrel.exe?

Do not delete it solely because the name is unfamiliar. First record the path and properties, calculate the hash, and scan it. If Windows Security has identified and quarantined it, let the security product manage removal. If the file is clean and belongs to a verified application, deleting it manually can break that application; repair or uninstall the parent program instead.

Manual deletion is reasonable only after you have confirmed that the file is unwanted, stopped the process, disabled the responsible startup mechanism, and retained the detection details. If Windows reports that the file is in use or access is denied, do not force removal with random “unlocker” utilities. Recheck the parent process and use Windows Security or qualified support.

When the problem returns after reboot

  1. Run an updated full scan again and note whether the detection path changes.
  2. Check Startup apps, scheduled tasks, services, and the Run keys for commands that recreate or relaunch the file.
  3. Inspect recently installed applications and browser extensions. Remove only software you can identify and uninstall through its legitimate uninstaller.
  4. If the system is unstable, boot into Windows Recovery options and use Safe Mode for investigation. Safe Mode limits third-party startup components; it does not prove that a file is malicious.
  5. For continuing detections, preserve logs and obtain professional malware-removal assistance rather than repeatedly deleting individual copies.

How to compare two copies of the file

If you find more than one geradrel.exe, compare the copies on the same five axes:

Axis Questions to answer
Path and source Which folders contain the files, and which installer or download created each one?
Signer Is the certificate valid, and does the signer match the expected application?
SHA-256 and detections Do the hashes differ, and do reputable scanners report either hash?
Parent process Which application, service, script, or scheduled task launches each copy?
Persistence Does either copy return after quarantine or a reboot?

Different hashes mean you are dealing with different binaries even when the filenames match. A copy with a valid signer and a known installation path is not automatically safe, but it is materially different evidence from an unsigned copy launched by an unknown scheduled task.

What not to do

  • Do not open the executable to test whether it is harmless.
  • Do not trust a familiar-looking folder, company name, or filename without checking the signature and hash.
  • Do not download a replacement executable from a random DLL, registry, or “error fix” website.
  • Do not restore a quarantined file merely because an application displays a missing-file error.
  • Do not edit the registry or scheduled tasks blindly; record and verify each entry first.
  • Do not assume that a clean single-file scan rules out a compromised parent application or another persistence mechanism.

Optional shortcut after the manual checks

Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. It can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes an app-crash log and cleanup tools. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. A free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a subscription.

Bottom line

There is no verified public identity for geradrel.exe. Keep it closed, capture its full path and context, inspect Properties and Digital Signatures, calculate a SHA-256 hash, and scan with updated Windows Security. If it is detected, quarantine it and run a full scan. If it returns, trace the startup entry, scheduled task, Run key, or parent application responsible. Repair or reinstall only a verified parent application, and never download a replacement executable from an untrusted fix site.
