genprism.exe is normally the Windows executable for genprism, a Radiance command-line utility that generates a 3D prism or extruded-polygon description for a lighting scene. It is not a Windows system component. A copy inside a Radiance installation is consistent with legitimate software, but the filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe.
To decide whether your copy is trustworthy, verify its full path and source, inspect its publisher and signature, and scan it before running an unexpected copy. Most “not recognized” errors are installation or PATH problems; errors after the program starts usually involve the documented input syntax, vertex files, polygon order, or extrusion settings.

What genprism.exe does
The Radiance manual defines the utility as “genprism – generate a RADIANCE description of a prism.” It converts a polygon into a Radiance scene description by combining a material name, an object name, polygon vertices, and optional geometry controls. The resulting object can be used by other Radiance tools in an architectural-lighting or rendering workflow.
Radiance is commonly used from a command prompt, script, or build process rather than through a graphical application. That is why genprism.exe may appear briefly in a console window, in a script log, or as a child process of another Radiance command. Its normal job is to write geometry; it is not a background Windows service and is not required for Windows itself to boot.

How genprism.exe is supposed to work
The documented command form is:
genprism mat name { - | vfile | N v1 v2 .. vN } [ -l lvec ] [ -r radius ] [ -c ] [ -e ]
The first two arguments identify the Radiance material and the object. The remaining required part supplies the polygon vertices in one of three ways: a hyphen tells the program to read vertices from standard input, vfile names a file containing them, or N is followed by the coordinate pairs or triples expected by the installed Radiance build. Optional switches alter how the polygon is extruded and closed.
| Element | Purpose | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
mat |
Radiance material name applied to the generated surfaces. | Use a material that exists in the scene or material file you are using. |
name |
Name assigned to the generated object. | Use a distinct object name so later scene edits and logs are understandable. |
- |
Read polygon vertices from standard input. | Useful in a pipeline, but the upstream command must actually provide correctly formatted coordinates. |
vfile |
Read vertices from a file. | Confirm the file exists, the path is correct, and spaces in the path are quoted. |
N v1 v2 .. vN |
Supply a vertex count followed by the coordinate values. | Make sure the count matches the number of vertices and that every coordinate is present. |
-l lvec |
Provide an extrusion vector. | Check its direction and magnitude; it determines where the prism extends. |
-r radius |
Round polygon corners. | Use a radius that fits the polygon. The manual notes a limitation when normals face inward. |
-c |
Suppress the closing face. | Use only when an open-sided result is intended. |
-e |
Suppress end polygons. | Check that the missing end faces are deliberate, not an accidental switch. |
Vertex order and the extrusion vector determine surface orientations. A polygon can therefore be numerically valid while still rendering inside out or facing the wrong direction. The manual’s documented example creates an equilateral triangular prism; use it as a syntax reference rather than assuming that every polygon is triangular.
Is genprism.exe safe?
Safety is a property of the particular file, its source, and its behavior—not of the name. A genprism.exe located in a known Radiance installation directory and launched by a Radiance script is more consistent with the documented utility than a copy placed in a temporary folder, a user startup directory, or an unrelated download directory.

Seeing more than one result is not automatically malicious. Radiance may have been installed more than once, or one copy may be inside a Windows installation while another is inside a WSL2 or project-specific environment. The important questions are which copy your command resolves to and whether each copy has a credible installation context.
2. Check publisher and digital signature
Open the file’s Properties dialog and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. Also check the publisher shown on the Details tab. An unsigned file is not conclusive proof of malware, particularly for older or open-source utilities, but an unexpected publisher, a signature that fails validation, or a copy whose metadata does not match its installation history deserves additional scrutiny.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Scan before executing an unexpected copy
Keep Microsoft Defender or another current antivirus product updated. If you did not intentionally install Radiance, or if the file arrived through an unknown download, scan it before opening it. When Defender detects the file, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, review the detection and its path, and quarantine it unless you can independently verify the source. Microsoft advises using its file-submission process when you have evidence that a detection is a false positive.
4. Understand a SmartScreen warning
SmartScreen reputation warnings use download and antivirus signals. A warning that an application is “not commonly downloaded” means that caution is warranted, especially when the file is unsigned; it does not, by itself, prove that genprism.exe is malicious. Verify the source and scan the exact file instead of bypassing the warning solely because the filename looks familiar.
5. Inspect behavior if the origin remains unclear
Microsoft’s Process Explorer can show the process owner, parent process, open handles, and loaded DLLs. A genprism.exe started by a Radiance command or your own script is expected. An unexpected parent process, unusual child processes, or dependencies loaded from temporary or user-writable directories are reasons to stop, quarantine the copy, and investigate before allowing it to run again.

What is not known about an authentic file
There is no single current hash, certificate thumbprint, or universal file size that identifies every legitimate genprism.exe. Radiance versions, operating-system builds, compiler settings, and distribution methods can change those values. One third-party inventory records a historical example at 19.00 KB, but that figure is not a reliable authenticity test and should not be used as a replacement for checking provenance and a trusted build.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix “genprism.exe is not recognized” or “genprism.exe not found”
This message means Windows cannot resolve the command you typed to an executable in the current directory or on PATH. It does not necessarily mean the program is broken.
- Confirm that Radiance is installed. Use File Explorer to search the installation directory you selected, or run
Get-Command genprism.exe -All. If no result appears, the executable may not be installed in that environment. - Run the intended copy by full path. In Command Prompt, quote paths containing spaces:
"C:Path With SpacesRadiancebingenprism.exe" ...Replace the path and arguments with your actual installation and command.
- Add the correct directory to PATH if you use the command repeatedly. Open Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings > Environment Variables. Edit the user or system
Pathvariable and add the folder that actually contains genprism.exe. Open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window afterward; existing shells keep their old environment. - Check for an environment mismatch. A native Windows Radiance install and a Linux Radiance install inside WSL2 do not automatically share the same executable or PATH. Run the command in the environment where Radiance was installed, and do not copy a random executable between environments.
- Reinstall from a trusted Radiance project distribution if the file is missing. Avoid standalone executables from unverified mirrors. Packaging differs by distribution, so follow the installation instructions for the specific Radiance build you chose.
Fix “The system cannot find the file specified”
This error often concerns an input file rather than genprism.exe itself. Work through the command from left to right:
- Print the current directory with
cdin Command Prompt orGet-Locationin PowerShell. - Check the vertex file directly, for example
Test-Path "C:Pathtovertices.txt". A result ofFalsemeans the path is wrong or the file is unavailable. - Quote every path that contains spaces.
- Check spelling, file extension, and capitalization where the surrounding toolchain is case-sensitive.
- Make sure the script is not changing directories before it invokes genprism.exe. Use absolute paths while troubleshooting.
If the executable works with a simple test from its installation directory but fails in a script, compare the script’s working directory and environment variables with those of the interactive shell.
Fix syntax and input errors
When genprism.exe starts but exits with a usage message or geometry error, compare the command with the documented synopsis instead of changing switches at random.

- Provide both a material name and an object name.
- Provide exactly one vertex source: standard input (
-), a vertex-file path, or a vertex count followed by the coordinates. - Check that the vertex count agrees with the number of supplied vertices.
- Ensure each vertex has the required coordinate values and that no line contains an accidental comma, label, or extra character.
- Place optional
-l,-r,-c, and-earguments in the positions accepted by your Radiance build. - Use a material that the rest of your Radiance scene recognizes; a valid executable cannot compensate for a missing or misspelled material definition.
Start with the smallest polygon that you know is valid, then add the extrusion vector, rounding, or face-suppression switches one at a time. This isolates whether the failure is in the vertex data or in an optional geometry control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix geometry that looks wrong
Inside-out or reversed surfaces
Reverse the polygon’s vertex order and test again. Surface orientation is determined by vertex order together with the extrusion vector, so a mathematically closed polygon can still face away from the intended side.
Prism extruded in the wrong direction
Inspect the components of lvec. A negative component or a vector defined in a different coordinate convention can extend the object opposite to the one you expect. Verify the scene’s coordinate system and render a simple, known polygon before restoring the full command.
Strange rounded corners
Temporarily remove -r and confirm that the unrounded prism is correct. Then use a smaller radius and retest. The Radiance manual specifically notes that the rounding option has a limitation when normals face inward, so correct the vertex orientation before judging the radius.

Missing faces
Remove -c and -e for a closed test object. If the faces return, re-enable only the switch that matches the intended scene. -c suppresses the closing face, while -e suppresses end polygons; they are geometry choices, not repair options.

What to do if Windows Defender quarantines genprism.exe
- Do not restore the file merely because the filename is familiar.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and record the exact path, detection name, and action taken.
- Verify that the path belongs to the Radiance installation you intended to use.
- Update Defender and run a full scan. If the file came from an unexpected source, leave it quarantined while you investigate.
- Compare the file with a trusted Radiance distribution or a hash supplied by that distributor, when one is available.
- If you have evidence of a false positive, submit the file through Microsoft’s file-submission process rather than repeatedly disabling protection.
Microsoft also notes that a potentially unwanted application can remain blocked until you select an action. Review the detection and choose the appropriate remediation in Windows Security; do not treat a blocked status as proof that every Radiance installation is unsafe.
Why genprism.exe keeps appearing
A legitimate copy may appear whenever a Radiance script, build step, or rendering workflow generates a prism. Identify the parent process and command line in Task Manager or Process Explorer. If you did not start a Radiance workflow, inspect the script, shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry that launches it and disable the entry only after confirming what depends on it.
Repeated pop-ups accompanied by “not found” messages usually indicate a broken shortcut, stale PATH entry, or an automation job pointing to a removed installation. Repeated launches from a temporary or unrelated directory, especially with a suspicious parent process, should be treated as a security investigation rather than a normal Radiance error.

If PowerShell or a search finds multiple copies, compare them using the same criteria rather than choosing the one with the newest timestamp alone.
| Comparison | What a reassuring result looks like | What deserves investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Full path and context | Inside the Radiance installation or a clearly documented project environment. | Temporary, cache, downloads, startup, or unrelated application directory. |
| Version and timestamps | Consistent with the Radiance build you installed and with nearby files. | One copy appeared unexpectedly or has an unrelated version history. |
| Publisher and signature | Information is consistent with the distributor; a valid signature is present when supplied. | Unexpected publisher, invalid signature, or unexplained metadata. |
| SHA-256 hash | Matches a hash published for the same trusted build, if available. | No match, or no trusted reference exists and other indicators are also suspicious. |
| Parent process and dependencies | Started by your Radiance command or script and loads expected libraries. | Started by an unknown process or loads DLLs from unusual writable folders. |
| Defender and SmartScreen | No detection after current scans, with the source independently verified. | Detection, repeated reputation warning, or an unexplained quarantine. |
You can calculate a local SHA-256 value with PowerShell:
Get-FileHash "C:PathTogenprism.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
A hash is useful only when you can compare it with a trusted value for the same version and distribution. There is no universal hash for all legitimate genprism.exe files.
Quick Recap
A safe manual recovery sequence
- Stop running the unexpected copy and note its full path.
- Locate every copy with
Get-Command genprism.exe -Alland File Explorer. - Verify which copy belongs to your Radiance installation or WSL2 environment.
- Inspect Properties, publisher information, and any digital signature.
- Update your security software and scan the exact file.
- If the source is untrusted or the file is detected, quarantine it and obtain Radiance again from a trusted project distribution.
- If the file is legitimate but not found, run it by full path and repair PATH.
- If it launches but fails, validate the vertex source, material, object name, optional switches, vertex order, and extrusion vector in that order.
- Test with a minimal known-good polygon before restoring the full automation workflow.
