Gears of War: E-Day is a mainline prequel and origin story set 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago as the Locust Horde first erupts from beneath Sera during Emergence Day.
The immediate campaign takes place over three days and nights in the city of Kalona. Marcus and Dom are young veterans of the Pendulum Wars, still processing the death of Dom’s older brother Carlos, and their friendship is only beginning to take the shape that later defines the series.

What is Gears of War: E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day is a mainline entry in the Gears of War series, not a side story or replacement for the later games. It is an origin story focused on the first appearance of the Locust Horde and on the early bond between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago.
“E-Day” means Emergence Day: the moment the Locust rise from underground across Sera and launch an assault on humanity. In the original series, Emergence Day is already a defining historical event. This game puts the player inside that first shock, when civilians and soldiers do not yet know what the creatures are, where they came from, or how an ordinary military response could possibly stop them.

The setting gives the game a different dramatic premise from a conventional sequel. Marcus, Dom and their squad are not investigating a familiar enemy after years of war. They are trying to identify an overwhelming threat while it is actively destroying their world. The developers described the Locust design brief in those terms. Matt Searcy said: “The design brief was pretty simple,” explains Searcy. “Locust are the ‘monsters under the bed.’ What would happen to the people of Sera in seeing this overwhelming army of monsters and trying to figure out…what are you going to do?”
Where does E-Day fit in the Gears timeline?
The confirmed placement is straightforward: E-Day occurs 14 years before the original Gears of War. That is the relative date given by the official franchise information and Xbox Wire material. It establishes the game as a prequel to the first numbered campaign, rather than a retelling of it.
| Game or event | Chronological position | What that means for the characters |
|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: E-Day | 14 years before the original Gears of War | Marcus and Dom are Pendulum Wars veterans confronting the Locust for the first time. |
| Emergence Day | The opening crisis depicted by E-Day | The Locust are an unknown, seemingly unstoppable enemy to the people of Sera. |
| Original Gears of War | 14 years after E-Day | The Locust conflict is an established war, and Marcus and Dom already have the bond familiar to players. |
| Gears 4 and Gears 5 | Later than the original trilogy; an exact interval is not established in the material cited here | Their storylines remain part of the series’ continuing direction rather than being discarded by the prequel. |
This is a relative placement, not a complete numbered chronology of every campaign, novel, or historical event. The available official material confirms where E-Day sits in relation to the first game, but it does not provide a mission-by-mission timeline for the entire franchise.
What happens during the immediate E-Day campaign?
Three days and nights in Kalona
The launch guide describes the playable campaign as a struggle lasting three days and nights in the city of Kalona. That figure describes the immediate events of the game, not the entire history of the Locust War or every operation shown elsewhere in the series.
Kalona is therefore more than a backdrop. It is the contained setting in which the squad tries to survive the first wave, understand what is happening and respond while normal assumptions about the enemy collapse. The short time span reinforces the emergency: the characters are making decisions across consecutive nights and days while the invasion is still unfolding.

The first encounter with the Locust
At this point in the timeline, the Locust are not a known military category. Soldiers do not have decades of field knowledge, established tactics or a settled explanation for the underground emergence. The game’s tension comes from learning about the invasion at the same pace as the characters.
That perspective changes the meaning of familiar series elements. A weapon, defensive position or battlefield maneuver is not simply part of a mature war effort; it is an improvised answer to an unprecedented attack. The story can show why Emergence Day became the foundational trauma of Sera without requiring players to know every later revelation about the Locust.

Veterans of the Pendulum Wars
Marcus and Dom are not inexperienced civilians when Emergence Day begins. Both are veterans of the Pendulum Wars, the human conflict that predates the main Gears of War storyline. Their military experience gives them discipline and battlefield instincts, but it does not prepare them for an enemy that appears from beneath the planet in overwhelming numbers.
The loss of Carlos Santiago
Their relationship is also shaped by a shared personal loss. Carlos Santiago, Dom’s older brother and Marcus’s close friend, died during combat. Marcus and Dom are grieving when the game begins, and that grief is part of the foundation of their connection.
In later games, Marcus and Dom are presented as an inseparable partnership forged by years of war. E-Day shows an earlier stage: they know each other through Carlos and through military service, but their bond is still developing. Their shared history makes the first Locust attack personal before the larger war has even taken shape.

Whose point of view does the story use?
The story remains with Bravo Squad throughout. Rather than jumping between distant fronts or showing the invasion from several political and military viewpoints, the campaign follows Marcus, Dom and the squad as they experience the first emergence.
This limited viewpoint is important to the premise. Players discover the Locust as the squad does: through incomplete information, sudden attacks and the need to protect people in the immediate area. It avoids giving the audience an all-knowing explanation before the characters have earned one.
Keeping the focus on Bravo Squad also narrows the story’s claims. The game depicts what these soldiers and the people around them experience in Kalona; it does not, by itself, establish a complete account of everything happening on Sera at the same time.
How does E-Day connect to the rest of the series?
It is a mainline prequel
Xbox Wire identifies E-Day as a mainline series entry set earlier in the established timeline. Its purpose is to add context to the franchise’s past, especially the event that turned the Locust into humanity’s defining enemy and the experience that shaped Marcus and Dom.

That makes the game useful to longtime players without requiring it to rewrite the original campaign. The first game remains the later point in the chronology, while E-Day supplies the circumstances that lead toward it.
It does not erase Gears 4 or Gears 5
The developers have explicitly said that telling this earlier story does not mean abandoning the storylines introduced in Gears 4 and Gears 5. The prequel adds historical and character context; it is not presented as a replacement continuity that makes the later games irrelevant.
For readers deciding whether they need to know the later games first, the practical answer is no. The premise is anchored before the original Gears of War, and the campaign’s restricted viewpoint is designed around characters encountering the Locust for the first time. Familiarity with the series can add recognition, but the chronological position is deliberately earlier.
What the game does not establish
The official information currently available does not provide a complete mission-by-mission chronology, a full list of every continuity reference or a detailed account of every event occurring elsewhere on Sera during the invasion. Claims that go beyond the confirmed 14-year placement, the Kalona campaign and Bravo Squad’s viewpoint should be treated as interpretation until an official source establishes them.

| Marcus and Dom | Young Pendulum Wars veterans, grieving Carlos and forming their defining bond | Veteran partners with an established friendship | Their earlier history informs later events, while Gears 4 and Gears 5 pursue their own storylines |
| Primary viewpoint | Bravo Squad throughout | Focused military perspective during the established war | Story scope and protagonists vary by entry |
The most useful comparison is therefore chronological, not commercial. E-Day answers “how did this begin?” rather than “what comes after Gears 5?”

Why the timeline matters
Placing the game fourteen years before the original changes the emotional context of nearly every major relationship. Marcus and Dom have not yet become the partnership that later players recognize. The Locust have not yet become a familiar military opponent. Sera’s institutions and civilians are reacting to an event that has no established playbook.

The short answer
Gears of War: E-Day is the series’ mainline origin story: a prequel set fourteen years before the first Gears of War, covering the Locust’s initial emergence on Sera. Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, Pendulum Wars veterans connected by the death of Carlos Santiago, fight with Bravo Squad across three days and nights in Kalona. The game expands the history behind the original trilogy while leaving the later Gears 4 and Gears 5 storylines intact.
