That makes it a direct prequel in the timeline, not a remake of the first game and not a side story set during an already familiar campaign. Its purpose is to show how the invasion starts and how Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago become connected at the moment their world collapses.
When and where the story takes place
Fourteen years before the original game
The stated timeline marker is simple: E-Day occurs fourteen years before the first Gears of War. Players see Marcus and Dom before the events that made them veteran soldiers and before the Locust War became a long-running struggle. This earlier point in their lives lets the campaign focus on first reactions, immediate losses and the formation of a partnership that later defines the series.

The invasion of Kalona
Xbox’s launch guide places the opening campaign in the city of Kalona. Marcus, Dom and new squadmates face the first hours of the Locust invasion there. The same guide describes the campaign as spanning three days and nights. That is a description of the story’s campaign window, not evidence that every mission runs continuously in real time or that the game uses a three-day clock for every playable sequence.
Kalona gives the invasion a specific human setting. Instead of beginning with an already established front line, the story follows a city confronting an enemy that arrives from below with little warning. The setting lets the campaign move between the shock of the first attacks and the practical problem of surviving long enough to organize a defense.
The story: Emergence Day and two beginnings
The Locust Horde emerges
The central event is the Locust Horde breaking through from beneath the surface. Humanity is pushed into a desperate fight for survival as the invasion spreads. Because the game is set at the opening of the Locust War, the conflict is presented as a sudden rupture rather than a battle whose rules and boundaries are already understood.
This perspective answers a question that later games can only assume: what did the first attack feel like to the people who experienced it? E-Day is built around that first encounter, when familiar locations become dangerous and the protagonists must respond before they have the knowledge accumulated by years of war.
Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago
Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago are the named protagonists. Their relationship is younger than the one shown in the original game, and the campaign follows the circumstances that bring them together during the invasion. New squadmates join them in Kalona, giving the story a small-unit viewpoint while the wider crisis unfolds around them.

Dom’s family loss
The Coalition’s Collector’s Edition announcement identifies the death of Dom’s brother, Carlos Santiago, as a thematic presence in the story. Carlos’s loss is part of the emotional context surrounding Dom and helps explain why the campaign is not only about military survival. The characters are dealing with grief while the planet is entering a war that will define their lives.
Nicole Fawcette, Studio Brand Director at The Coalition, described E-Day as having “two beginnings”: the day Sera falls apart and starts the Locust War, and the beginning of the unbreakable bond between Marcus and Dom as they overcome shared grief. That framing explains why the game is interested in personal history as much as battlefield history.
Where E-Day fits in the Gears timeline

E-Day retains the cover-based combat that defines Gears of War, but The Coalition says the cover system was rebuilt rather than carried over unchanged. The studio’s gameplay update also calls out movement, weapons, enemies and the broader combat sandbox as areas of attention. In practical terms, the game is intended to preserve the recognizable rhythm of moving between cover, choosing firing positions and managing threats while revisiting the underlying systems for this prequel.
Unreal Engine 5 foundation
The Coalition identifies Unreal Engine 5 as the technical foundation. That is an engine and development-platform fact, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or performance level on every device. Actual performance can vary by hardware, graphics settings and later updates.

Horde Siege
Horde Siege is a player-versus-environment mode built around surviving waves. The developer describes it as a 12-player mode with multiple squads operating on maps in Kalona. It is distinct from the campaign: the objective is sustained team survival and coordination rather than progressing through the scripted origin story.
Versus PvP
Versus provides competitive player-versus-player play. The official material confirms the mode’s inclusion but does not establish a single player-count number that applies to every playlist. Match rules, maps and playlist details can change through updates, so consult the current in-game or storefront information for the options available after launch.
Release date, platforms and access
Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, 2026. The official Xbox listing names Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11. Xbox’s launch guide also lists Steam and Game Pass availability.

Which way should you play?
Choose the campaign format first
- Solo: Best if you want to experience the origin story at your own pace.
- Console split-screen: The official listing specifies two-player local campaign play.
- Online co-op: Suitable for a larger group, with campaign support for up to four players.
Choose a platform based on your group
Xbox Series X|S is the straightforward choice for local split-screen because that feature is explicitly documented for console. Windows players can use the PC listing or Steam, depending on which storefront and account ecosystem they prefer. If friends are spread across locations, confirm the current cross-platform and account requirements in the live listing; the reviewed launch descriptions establish online co-op but do not specify every cross-play rule.
Decide between purchase and Game Pass
A standalone copy gives you access independently of a subscription while the store supports the edition you bought. Game Pass can be the more convenient route if the service is offered in your region and your plan includes E-Day. Compare the current plan catalog and renewal terms rather than assuming that every Game Pass tier or country has identical access.
What makes E-Day different from another sequel
The Coalition chose an origin story at Emergence Day instead of moving directly to a later sequel. That decision changes the dramatic questions. The campaign is not asking only how the next battle is won; it asks how Marcus and Dom become the people players recognize, how a city reacts to the first Locust attacks and how grief shapes a partnership during the first days of the war.
The prequel setting also changes the balance between familiarity and discovery. Returning players know that the Locust War will become a defining conflict, but the characters in Kalona do not have that historical perspective. The tension comes from watching them confront an enemy and a catastrophe whose scale is not yet clear to them.

The published Xbox and Coalition descriptions establish the premise, timeline, Kalona setting, principal characters, modes, release date and listed access routes. They do not provide a complete regional price table, a guaranteed long-term Game Pass catalog schedule, universal Versus player counts, or performance figures for every Xbox and PC configuration.
Those details can change with region, edition, hardware and post-launch updates. Treat storefront information as the authority for your market and current system requirements, rather than relying on a price or availability statement copied from an earlier launch listing.
Bottom line: the simplest explanation
Gears of War: E-Day is the series’ Emergence Day prequel.
