gbpsv.exe is usually the executable for Gbp Service, a component of G-Buster Browser Defense (also called GbpSv). It was historically installed with Brazilian banking-security software, commonly under C:Program Filesgbplugingbpsv.exe. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe or malicious.
A legitimate, signed copy can still be involved in an attack if a malicious DLL is placed beside it and loaded through DLL side-loading. Treat the path, digital signature, hash, service registration, neighboring files and download source as the evidence. The safest repair sequence is to document the file, determine whether you still need the banking component, remove unwanted software, update Microsoft Defender, run a full scan and use Defender Offline if the service returns after reboot.

What gbpsv.exe is supposed to do
GbpSv.exe (the capitalization is not significant in Windows) is the service executable for Gbp Service. Its Windows service name is GbpSv, and it belongs to G-Buster Browser Defense, a security component that was distributed with some Brazilian online-banking software.

This is legacy software. The documented version in Palo Alto Networks’ abuse report was no longer in use when that report was written. A bank may nevertheless have its own current requirement or replacement, so do not remove a component that you still need for a specific banking service without checking that bank’s current instructions.
Is gbpsv.exe safe?
There is no filename-only answer. A copy in the expected installation folder, signed by the expected publisher and installed by software you recognize can be legitimate. A renamed copy in a user-writable folder, an invalid signature or an unexplained service registration is suspicious.
Palo Alto Networks wrote that the G-Buster executable component was not malicious, while also explaining that attackers abused a signed copy to load a malicious fltLib.dll. In that campaign, the executable looked normal; the DLL loaded beside it performed the harmful activity. Therefore, scanning only gbpsv.exe is not enough.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Evidence that supports a legitimate installation
- The full path is the expected
gbplugindirectory underProgram Files, not a temporary, downloads or user-profile folder. - The file has a valid digital signature from the expected publisher, and Windows can build a trusted certificate chain.
- The
GbpSvservice points to that same file and was installed with banking software you knowingly use. - The file’s hash and creation time fit the software installation you remember.
- Neighboring DLLs are part of the same signed installation and were not dropped recently by an unknown download.
- Defender and other reputable scanners do not flag the complete installation directory.
Signs that require investigation
- The executable is in
%AppData%,%Temp%, a downloads folder, a random-named directory or another location unrelated to the banking software. - The signature is missing, invalid, expired without a valid chain, or belongs to an unexpected publisher.
- The service starts from a path containing a second, unknown DLL such as
fltLib.dll. - The file appeared after an unsolicited attachment, cracked software installer, fake update or other untrusted download.
- The service respawns after deletion, creates scheduled tasks or adds unfamiliar Run/RunOnce entries.
- Windows Security reports related files, even if it reports no detection for gbpsv.exe itself.

How attackers abused the signed executable
In the Brazilian malspam campaign documented by Palo Alto Networks Unit 42, a signed GbpSv.exe was paired with a malicious DLL. Windows loaded the executable as a service, and the executable loaded fltLib.dll from its directory. The malicious library then performed information-stealing activity and communicated with the attackers’ infrastructure.
Unit 42 observed more than 400 infected Windows computers in that 2017 campaign. That historical figure describes one operation, not the prevalence of current infections and not proof that every GbpSv.exe copy is harmful. The practical lesson is to inspect the complete folder, loaded modules and persistence entries rather than trusting a signature on one file.
Document the file before deleting or quarantining it
If you found gbpsv.exe in a detection, a crash report or Task Manager, do not execute an unexpected copy and do not immediately delete it. Record enough information to identify what installed it and whether another component is involved.
Recommended Free Tools
- In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path, including the drive letter.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and record the Digital Signatures tab, signer, timestamp and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- On the Details tab, note the product name, company, file version and original filename.
- Open Windows PowerShell and calculate the SHA-256 hash:
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:Program Filesgbplugingbpsv.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Replace the path with your actual location. - List the service registration without starting it:
sc.exe qc GbpSv
andsc.exe query GbpSv. Save the displayed binary path, start type and current state. - List the files in the same directory, paying particular attention to DLLs created or modified at the same time as the executable. Do not open unknown DLLs.
- Write down when the file first appeared and which installer, bank portal or download preceded it. This provenance often distinguishes an unwanted program from an old, intentionally installed component.
Check whether you still need G-Buster
Ask which application installed the service. If you no longer use the associated bank software, or if the component arrived without your knowledge, removal is usually preferable. If a bank still requires a browser-defense component, contact that bank for its current supported software before uninstalling; do not assume the legacy G-Buster version is still required.

Do not restore a quarantined file merely because a bank site once used G-Buster. The documented version is legacy, and a current provider may have moved to a different product or authentication method.
Remove an unwanted installation through Windows
- Disconnect from sensitive websites and close browsers and banking applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Windows 10. On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Search for G-Buster, Gbp Service, Warsaw, Diagnóstico Warsaw or the publisher name shown in the file properties. Select the matching entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the vendor’s uninstaller, then restart Windows. If no entry exists, do not delete random registry keys; continue with the security scans and persistence checks below.
- After restarting, run
sc.exe query GbpSv. A removed service should no longer be present or should report that the specified service does not exist. If it remains, note its binary path and investigate before stopping or deleting it.
Microsoft recommends uninstalling software you do not need as a first response to unwanted software. If the component is tied to a service you still require, obtain a supported replacement from the original software provider instead of downloading a copy from a file-sharing site.
Scan Windows with Microsoft Defender
Update security intelligence
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection updates, choose Check for updates, and wait for the update to finish.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it. A full scan can take considerable time on a large disk.
Allow Defender to quarantine related DLLs, scheduled tasks or other files it identifies. Record the detection names and paths rather than restoring them simply because gbpsv.exe itself was signed.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the service returns
If the service respawns after reboot, cannot be stopped, or Defender reports that it cannot remove a file while Windows is running, choose Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan > Scan now. Save open work first. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, then boots normally when the scan completes.

Review the result under Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. An offline scan is especially useful when persistence prevents normal cleanup; it does not make an unknown file safe merely because the scan finds nothing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Inspect DLLs and persistence when gbpsv.exe is involved
If an unknown DLL sits beside the executable, treat the directory as one incident. Do not copy a replacement DLL from the internet and do not register an unfamiliar library with regsvr32. Quarantine the folder with Defender or your security team’s approved process, preserve the path and hash information, and investigate what launched it.
Check service configuration
In an elevated Command Prompt, run sc.exe qc GbpSv and compare the BINARY_PATH_NAME with the file you inspected. A mismatch, an argument pointing to a temporary directory or a service that starts automatically without a known parent application warrants further investigation. Do not use sc delete until you have confirmed that the service is unwanted and recorded its details; deleting a required service can break the software that installed it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check startup locations
Review Task Manager > Startup apps, Settings > Apps > Startup, and Task Scheduler for entries created at the same time as the suspicious file. Also inspect the standard Run and RunOnce entries with a trusted administrative tool. Remove only entries that you can tie to the unwanted installation; leave unknown entries in place until they have been scanned and identified.
Best Value
Look for related events
Open Event Viewer and check Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around the time of the error or unexpected launch. Service-control events can reveal whether the service failed because a file is missing, a dependency is unavailable, a path is invalid or Windows blocked the executable. Capture the event ID and full message before changing anything.
Fix common gbpsv.exe error situations
“gbpsv.exe is missing” or “Gbp Service cannot start”
First confirm whether you intentionally uninstalled or quarantined G-Buster. If so, remove the leftover service entry through the original uninstaller or the software provider’s documented cleanup procedure. If you still need the component, reinstall it only from the bank or original vendor that supplied it; do not download a standalone executable from an unofficial site. Restart and verify the service status and Event Viewer message.
The service starts and immediately stops
Check the service’s binary path, required files and permissions. A missing or quarantined DLL, a damaged installation or an incompatible legacy component can all produce this symptom. Run a full Defender scan, inspect the Application and System logs, and reinstall from an official source only after malware checks are clear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHigh CPU, memory or disk use
In Task Manager, confirm which path owns the process and whether the load is from gbpsv.exe or a neighboring DLL. A legitimate service can be busy during browser or banking activity, but sustained high usage from an unexpected path should be treated as suspicious. Capture the process path, scan the directory and check for persistence before ending the process or deleting files.
Repeated pop-ups, browser problems or banking-site failures
Do not disable security controls simply to make a site work. Check whether the bank has retired its old browser-defense component and published a replacement. Remove obsolete software, update Windows and browsers, and reinstall only the currently supported component from the bank’s own instructions.
“Access denied” when stopping or deleting the file
Use an administrator account, but do not take ownership of a file until you know it is unwanted. A protected service may be locked because it is running; an active malicious process may also resist removal. Run Defender Offline, then recheck the service and file path. If the file is part of a work or banking system, involve the administrator or the bank’s support team rather than forcing deletion.
How to decide whether to keep, remove or escalate
| Finding | Best next action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Expected gbplugin path, valid expected signature, known bank installation, no related detections |
Check with the bank before changing it; keep it only if currently required | It may be a legitimate legacy component, but the documented version is not necessarily current |
| Unexpected path or invalid signature | Disconnect from sensitive services, preserve evidence, run Defender full and Offline scans, then quarantine or uninstall | Filename similarity is weak evidence when provenance is unknown |
| Signed executable beside an unknown DLL | Treat the folder and persistence as the incident; do not restore files based on the executable’s signature | DLL side-loading can make a signed executable the carrier for malicious code |
| Service remains after uninstall | Record the binary path, inspect startup and scheduled tasks, scan offline, and use the original vendor’s cleanup guidance | Forced registry or service deletion can leave broken persistence or damage required software |
| Defender detects related files | Quarantine and follow Protection history instructions; seek professional help if detections return | A clean result for one executable does not clear the surrounding installation |
When to get additional help
Escalate to your organization’s IT or a qualified incident-response professional if the computer handles business banking, credentials or regulated data; if unknown DLLs and scheduled tasks return after an Offline scan; if multiple accounts show suspicious activity; or if you cannot establish where the file came from. Change important passwords from a known-clean device and contact the affected bank through a number you obtained independently.
