garfield.exe is not a standard Windows component, and the filename alone cannot tell you whether a file is safe. A malware-analysis report dated February 24, 2019 marked one file named Garfield.exe as “Malicious activity.” Separately, an old copy of Garfield: Caught in the Act uses a similarly named installer file and can produce a WING32.dll error. Those are different possibilities, so identify the exact file before opening, deleting, or repairing it.
Treat an unexplained copy in Downloads, Desktop, a temporary folder, an email attachment, cracked software, or removable media as untrusted. A copy inside a known game installation from original or trusted media may instead be a legacy compatibility problem.

Why the name garfield.exe is ambiguous
Windows executable names are not unique identifiers. Two unrelated programs can use the same basename while having different publishers, code, hashes, and behavior. Microsoft defines malware as malicious software, but a filename by itself does not establish that a file is malware.

Its report lists the sample path as C:UsersadminDesktopGarfield.exe and gives a “Malicious activity” verdict. ANY.RUN also warns that analysis can be affected by user actions and does not guarantee that a sample is malicious or safe. That report is evidence about that sample, not every file called garfield.exe.

A separate legacy-game troubleshooting page for Garfield: Caught in the Act refers to garfield.ex_, an installation file that is expanded to create the game executable, and documents a possible WING32.dll error. A trusted game file can therefore share the name without being the same object as the analyzed sample.
How to decide whether your copy is safe
Do not double-click an unknown executable “just to see what happens.” Compare the file using all of these checks:

Manual safety and removal procedure
1. Preserve evidence without launching the file
- Disconnect the computer from the internet if the file is running, repeatedly appearing, or causing suspicious activity. If you need online help, use a different trusted device.
- Write down the exact filename, full path, creation date, source, and the message that appeared. Take a screenshot if the wording may disappear.
- Do not rename, modify, or move the file before you record its location. Do not download a replacement
garfield.exefrom a random “DLL fix” or executable-download site. - If it came from removable media or an installer, leave the media disconnected until it has been scanned.
2. Update Microsoft Defender
In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates. Let the security-intelligence update finish before scanning. Security software that is not current can miss newer detections.

3. Run a full scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
- Choose Full scan, then select Scan now.
- Allow the scan to complete. Review every detection and use Start actions to quarantine or remove items you confirm are unwanted.
Do not add a broad antivirus exclusion merely to make an unknown copy run. An exclusion suppresses protection around the excluded location and can hide a problem rather than solve it.
4. Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the behavior persists
If the file returns after removal, starts before normal Windows tools load, or Defender cannot clean it, return to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options and choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). Save open work and start the scan. Windows restarts and scans outside the normal desktop, which can prevent persistent software from hiding while Windows is running.
5. Keep reputation protection enabled
Open Windows Security → App & browser control → Reputation-based protection. Keep potentially unwanted app protection enabled, including controls for blocking apps and downloads. Microsoft notes that a potentially unwanted application (PUA) detection may be blocked but not removed until you select an action and start it. SmartScreen reputation uses signals such as antivirus results, download history, download volume, and URL reputation, so a warning is a reason to investigate provenance rather than proof that every file with this name is malicious.

6. Remove software you do not need
Uninstall an unfamiliar program that installed the file: open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10), sort by installation date, and remove software you did not intend to install. If the entry is clearly part of a game you want to keep, do not uninstall it before checking the game-specific branch below.
7. Check persistence after cleaning
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and inspect Processes and Startup apps. Right-click an unexpected entry and choose Open file location or Search online only after recording its details. Also review Task Scheduler for recently created tasks that launch the same path. Disable an item only when you can identify it; disabling a Windows component or a legitimate game launcher can create a different failure.
If garfield.exe already ran
Assume the device may be exposed until a scan says otherwise. The Federal Trade Commission advises stopping sensitive logins on the affected computer, updating security software, scanning, changing passwords from a trusted device, and enabling two-factor authentication.

- Stop using the affected PC for banking, shopping, email, password-manager access, and other sensitive accounts.
- From a different, trusted device, change passwords for accounts used on the PC. Start with your primary email because it can reset other accounts.
- Enable two-factor authentication wherever it is available and review account sessions, recovery addresses, and security alerts.
- Run the Defender full scan and, if necessary, the offline scan before resuming sensitive work on the original device.
If you entered payment details or see unauthorized transactions, contact the financial institution using its official number. A scan cannot undo a password disclosure, so account protection remains necessary even when the file is removed.

Repeated prompts usually mean something is trying to launch the file again. Common possibilities include a startup entry, scheduled task, installer that failed halfway, a game shortcut pointing to a missing path, or unwanted software that recreated the file. The filename does not identify which case applies.

If the path changes between prompts, record each one.
- Check Task Manager → Startup apps and Task Scheduler for entries that reference that path.
- Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for a recently installed program and uninstall it if you do not recognize or need it.
- Run Defender scans after disabling or removing the responsible entry. If the prompt returns, use Defender Offline rather than repeatedly deleting the visible file.
- If the path belongs to a game installation, repair or reinstall the game from original or trusted media instead of deleting individual files.
Fixing “garfield.exe has stopped working” for a legitimate game
First establish that the executable came with Garfield: Caught in the Act or another trusted Garfield game installation. Scan the installation media and extracted files before running them. If the file came from an unknown download, follow the malware-removal procedure instead of trying compatibility fixes.
When the installer uses garfield.ex_
The legacy troubleshooting instructions describe garfield.ex_ as a compressed installation executable that must be expanded to create garfield.exe. Use the original media and the game’s documented extraction procedure; do not substitute an executable downloaded from a DLL or “error fix” site. After extraction, scan the resulting file and verify that its path is the game’s installation directory.
When Windows reports WING32.dll
WING32.dll is associated with the old game’s compatibility requirements. Record the exact error text, your Windows edition and version, the installation source, and the path of the extracted executable. Re-run the trusted installer or its documented extraction step rather than copying a random DLL into System32. A replacement DLL from an arbitrary website can be tampered with or mismatched and may create a new security problem.
Safe compatibility checks
- Confirm that the game files were read from original or trusted installation media and that Defender reports no threat.
- Try the game’s documented setup or repair process before changing system files.
- Use the executable’s Properties → Compatibility settings only for a file you have verified; compatibility mode cannot make an untrusted executable safe.
- Do not grant unnecessary administrator rights or create permanent antivirus exclusions.
- If the trusted installation still fails, provide the exact Windows version, error text, installation source, and full path when seeking compatibility help.
Can you delete garfield.exe?
Delete or quarantine an unexplained copy only after recording its path and scanning it. If Defender identifies it as unwanted, choose its recommended quarantine or removal action and then rescan. If the file is inside a game directory you recognize, deleting it may break the game; use the installer’s uninstall, repair, or reinstall process instead.
Do not delete files from System32, the Windows folder, or another shared directory solely because the name looks suspicious. The name is ambiguous, and manual deletion can damage Windows or another application without removing the process that recreates the file.
