This path is a useful plausibility check, not a guarantee. Community troubleshooting records are not a substitute for checking the signature and scanning the actual file installed on your PC. Client updates can also change file versions and supporting files.
What does the overlay actually do?
The overlay is a client-side layer that can appear while a GOG game is running. Depending on the game and the current GALAXY release, it may expose social tools, achievement information, friends or other integration controls without requiring you to leave the game. It is separate from the game executable itself. A game can often launch when the overlay is disabled, but overlay-dependent features may no longer be available.
GalaxyOverlay.exe may start only when GALAXY or an integrated game needs it, so seeing it briefly in Task Manager is not automatically a problem. A process that remains active after you exit the client, repeatedly restarts, or consumes substantial CPU deserves investigation.
Is galaxyoverlay.exe safe?
A copy in the expected GOG GALAXY directory, signed by the legitimate publisher and reported clean by Microsoft Defender is plausibly the genuine component. A file with the same name in Downloads, Temp, a random user-profile folder or an unrelated program directory should be treated as untrusted until it has been verified.
Check the location in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find GalaxyOverlay.exe on the Processes or Details tab. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the complete path before closing the window.
- Compare the path with
C:ProgramDataGOG.comGalaxyredistsoverlay. A different path does not automatically mean malware, but it requires additional verification.
ProgramData is a shared Windows data location and may be hidden in File Explorer. You can paste the complete path into the address bar instead of trying to browse to it manually. Do not assume that every file under a folder named GOG.com is genuine; the complete path and the file’s properties still matter.
Verify the publisher signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the EXE and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details and confirm that Windows reports a valid certificate and a trusted signer.
- Check the certificate validity dates and whether Windows says the digital signature is intact. The exact certificate subject and file hash can vary by client release, so do not rely on a value copied from another computer.
An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not a reason to download a replacement from a third-party site. Leave the file isolated while you determine which installer put it there. A legitimate update can change the signing certificate or binary, which is why verification should be performed on the file currently installed on your computer.

Scan the file and the system
- Right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender if that option is available.
- For a broader check, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan and start the scan.
- If suspicious behavior continues after a normal scan, return to Scan options and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first because Windows restarts to perform the check.
Microsoft SmartScreen reputation warnings are caution signals, not automatic proof that a file is malicious. An uncommon or newly updated file can trigger a warning, but an unsigned file, a detection, or a suspicious location warrants quarantine and investigation. Do not create a Defender exclusion merely because the name looks familiar.
GalaxyOverlay.exe versus NVIDIA’s overlay
These are separate components. NVIDIA’s current in-game overlay is part of the NVIDIA App and is used for recording, performance monitoring, game filters and related GPU controls. It is not GalaxyOverlay.exe and is not repaired by reinstalling GOG GALAXY.

If the error mentions NVIDIA App, GeForce overlay, display drivers or GPU filters rather than GOG GALAXY, follow the NVIDIA branch below instead of deleting GalaxyOverlay.exe. Looking only at the word “overlay” in an error message can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
Why GalaxyOverlay.exe errors happen
- Damaged or incomplete installation: an interrupted update can leave the EXE without its DLL, DAT or PAK dependencies.
- Out-of-date client: a game or GOG GALAXY update may expect a newer overlay component.
- Security software quarantine: Defender or another security product may have isolated a file after a detection or reputation warning.
- Conflicting overlays: multiple game, recording or monitoring overlays can interfere with hooks into the same game.
- High resource demand: a faulty overlay session can repeatedly restart or consume substantial CPU. Reports of high CPU are user observations, not a universal measurement or guaranteed defect.
- Permissions or profile problems: blocked access to the shared
ProgramDatadirectory can prevent the overlay from starting. - Game-side changes: a recent patch, damaged game files, an overclock or a display-driver problem can appear to be an overlay failure.
- Imposter file: malware can use a familiar filename in an unrelated directory, which is why path, signature and scan checks come first.
The symptom can also be misleading. A crash that occurs as the overlay opens may actually come from a newly patched game, a display driver or another overlay. Note exactly when the failure occurs: at client startup, when a game launches, when a shortcut opens the overlay, or after the game has been running for a while. That timing helps separate a missing dependency from a conflict or resource problem.
Manual fixes for GalaxyOverlay.exe crashes, missing-file errors and high CPU
1. Close GOG GALAXY completely and restart Windows
- Open GOG GALAXY, use its tray icon menu and choose Exit rather than merely closing the window.
- Open Task Manager and confirm that GOG client and overlay processes have ended. Do not terminate unrelated Windows processes.
- Restart Windows, launch GOG GALAXY again and test the same game.
A clean restart clears a stuck overlay session and establishes whether the problem is temporary. If the process immediately returns with the same error, continue with the checks below.
2. Check that the supporting overlay files are present
- Use Task Manager’s Open file location command for GalaxyOverlay.exe.
- In that folder, look for the overlay DLL, DAT and PAK files installed with the client.
- If the EXE is present but the supporting files are missing, do not copy files from another PC or download individual DLLs. Repair the client installation instead.
Do not “fix” a missing DLL by registering a random download with Windows. Overlay files are version-matched; mixing files from another GALAXY release can create a different startup error or an unstable client.

3. Update GOG GALAXY from its official installer
Install the current GOG GALAXY client using GOG’s own installer or the client’s built-in update mechanism. An update can replace a damaged overlay component and restore dependencies. Close the client before running the installer and reboot afterward if Windows requests it.
4. Reinstall GOG GALAXY when updating does not help
- Back up game saves that are not synchronized and note any custom library or installation settings.
- Uninstall GOG GALAXY through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from GOG, install the client, sign in and test the affected game.
Do not reinstall by replacing only GalaxyOverlay.exe. The overlay depends on the rest of the client and its redistributable files. Use GOG’s installer rather than an executable or DLL mirror so the component set and versions are restored together.
5. Temporarily disable the GOG in-game overlay
If GOG GALAXY opens normally but a particular game crashes when the overlay appears, open the client’s game or overlay settings and turn off the in-game overlay temporarily. The exact label can vary between client releases. Launch the game again to see whether the crash disappears.

6. Address a recurring CPU spike
- In Task Manager, sort by the CPU column and confirm that GalaxyOverlay.exe is the process consuming resources.
- Exit and restart GOG GALAXY. A one-time spike while a game starts is different from sustained high usage at idle.
- Temporarily disable the in-game overlay and retest. If CPU use returns to normal, leave the overlay disabled until the client update or reinstall is complete.
- Check for updates to GOG GALAXY, the affected game and Windows.
- Run a Defender Full scan, followed by Defender Offline if unwanted behavior persists.
There is no authoritative universal CPU percentage or failure rate for this executable. Resource use depends on the client release, game and other software running on the PC. A user report that ending the process did not immediately stop gameplay is only an observation; it does not guarantee that every game will behave the same way.
7. Check security-software history before restoring anything
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Review the detection name, file path and action taken.
- Restore or allow a quarantined file only after its path and signature match the legitimate GOG installation and a current scan is clean. If the location or signature is suspicious, leave it quarantined and remove the program that installed it.
Never download a replacement EXE from a DLL or EXE mirror. A replacement can be tampered with, mismatched with your client version or bundled with unwanted software.

8. Repair the game and check for conflicts
- Use GOG GALAXY’s game-management option to verify or repair the affected game’s files, when that option is available.
- Temporarily turn off other game overlays, recording tools and hardware-monitoring overlays one at a time. Re-enable them individually to identify a conflict.
- Undo recent GPU or CPU overclocks while troubleshooting.
- Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates from their official update channels.
If only one title fails, prioritize that game’s files and recent patches. If every title fails immediately after a graphics-driver change, test the driver branch instead of repeatedly reinstalling GALAXY.

When the problem is NVIDIA’s overlay instead
NVIDIA’s documented troubleshooting path begins with a reboot. If that does not resolve an NVIDIA App or graphics-overlay failure, stop NVIDIA services, remove the previous NVIDIA installation when necessary, and reinstall the NVIDIA App or display driver using NVIDIA’s installer. For crashes or freezes, also check recent game patches, repair damaged game files, reinstall the display driver and reduce overclocks.
These steps apply to an NVIDIA overlay or driver error, not to a GOG GalaxyOverlay.exe file that fails its path, signature or Defender checks. Identify the process and its owner before changing drivers.
Should you disable or delete GalaxyOverlay.exe?
Disabling the in-game overlay is a reasonable diagnostic step when the overlay itself triggers a crash or CPU spike. Deleting the executable is not a repair: GOG GALAXY may recreate it during an update, and the client can lose overlay-dependent features or fail to start correctly. If the file is suspicious, quarantine it through your security software and investigate the installation rather than manually deleting random components.
