FPS means frames per second: how many successive video frames your stream captures, encodes, or delivers each second. For many talking-head streams, interviews, and presentations, 30 fps is a practical starting point. Choose 60 fps when smooth fast motion matters—such as gameplay or sports—and your camera, encoder, computer, upload connection, and streaming platform can all sustain it. There is no universal best frame rate: FPS, resolution, and bitrate work together.
What is FPS in streaming?
A frame is one still image in a video. Frame rate, measured in frames per second (fps), describes how many images are shown or sent each second. At 30 fps, the stream delivers 30 frames each second; at 60 fps, it delivers 60. A higher rate can make movement appear smoother because it represents motion with more frequent images, but it does not automatically make the whole stream look better.

Perceived quality also depends on resolution, bitrate, encoding, source footage, and the viewer’s playback conditions. Amazon IVS puts the relationship plainly: “Bitrate, FPS, and resolution are interrelated.”
Should I stream at 30 or 60 FPS?
| Consideration | 30 fps | 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| Motion | Often sufficient for talking heads, interviews, slides, and other relatively static scenes. | Can show fast movement more smoothly; consider it for gameplay, sports, and other motion-heavy content. |
| Stream demands | May be easier to sustain, depending on resolution, codec, content, and platform. | Typically requires more from the bitrate, encoder, computer, and connection; the added demand is not a fixed doubling. |
| Best fit | When motion is modest or the full streaming setup cannot reliably sustain 60 fps. | When smooth motion matters and the entire capture-to-platform pipeline supports it. |
These are practical distinctions, not guarantees. Cloudflare says high-motion, high-frame-rate content typically needs more bitrate than low-motion content such as slides. The right setting depends on the stream you are actually sending and the platform receiving it.

Does 60 FPS use more bitrate?
Often, a 60 fps stream needs a higher bitrate than a comparable 30 fps stream, especially when the picture contains fast movement. But bitrate does not have to double when frame rate doubles. The appropriate amount also depends on resolution, codec, content, and the platform’s ingest guidance. Higher frame rates can also ask more of the encoder and computer; Google Cloud notes that adding 60 fps steps to an encoding ladder requires more computing power.
Use each platform’s current recommendations as a starting point for that platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate—not as interchangeable or universal settings. The following figures are specific to the named services and their documentation, accessed in 2026.
Amazon IVS recommendations
| Resolution and frame rate | Amazon IVS recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | Up to 1,500 Kbps |
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | Up to 4,500 Kbps |
| 1080p at 30 or 60 fps | Up to 8,500 Kbps |
These are Amazon IVS configuration recommendations; they are not a promise that every source, network, or ingest path will achieve the same result. See Amazon IVS streaming configuration guidance.

Cloudflare advises live creators to typically use a bitrate well under 12 Mbps and distinguishes high-motion, high-frame-rate content from low-motion presentations when planning bitrate. That guidance is specific to Cloudflare’s documentation and should not be combined with the provider tables above as if all services use the same ingest pipeline. See Cloudflare’s live-stream setup guidance.
What FPS should I use for streaming?
Start with the content and confirm the limits of the complete setup. A camera that can capture 60 fps is not enough if the encoder, computer, connection, or destination cannot reliably handle the selected output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Match FPS to the motion. For a mostly static presentation or conversation, try 30 fps. For fast gameplay, sports, or similarly rapid movement, consider 60 fps if smoothness matters to viewers.
- Check the source and platform. Confirm that the camera or capture source, encoder software, computer, and destination platform support your chosen frame rate at the selected resolution. Amazon IVS and YouTube support up to 60 fps in the cited guidance; Amazon IVS also lists PAL rates. A source or platform limit can prevent a higher setting from working as intended.
- Set a platform-appropriate bitrate. Use the current recommendation for the exact destination, codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check that your sustained upload capacity can carry the stream; a speed-test result is useful, but a rehearsal helps reveal real-world instability.
- Rehearse representative action and audio. Run a speed test and a pre-stream test. Include movement similar to the real event, then monitor stream health instead of judging only a static preview. YouTube explicitly recommends testing upload bitrate and making a pre-stream test.
- Adjust one or more settings if the stream struggles. If frames drop or the stream becomes unstable, lower FPS, resolution, or bitrate as appropriate, then test again. Keep the revised settings within the platform’s current guidance and confirm that the actual stream is healthy.
For a 1080p 60 fps webcam stream, the camera must be able to capture at that rate, but camera capability alone cannot guarantee a stable stream. The rest of the encoding and network path still has to keep up.

Common FPS and live-streaming problems
- The encoder cannot hold the selected frame rate. The computer may be short on processing or graphics capacity, or competing applications may be consuming resources. Reduce the output rate or resolution, close resource-heavy applications, and rehearse again.
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable. The upload path may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the source may be constrained. Test upload capacity; then reduce bitrate, resolution, or FPS and check stream health during another rehearsal.
- The platform or source does not support the chosen setting. Check the current limits of the camera or capture source, encoder, and destination. Select a supported frame rate and resolution rather than assuming that one component’s specification applies to the whole pipeline.
- 60 fps looks no better than 30 fps. The content may have little motion, or another part of the stream may be limiting perceived quality. Compare the same representative movement at both rates and assess resolution, bitrate, and stability too.
Amazon IVS’s multitrack guidance identifies older GPUs, poor first-mile networks, resource contention, user settings, and codec support among constraints that can affect streaming configurations. A lower frame rate is often a sensible troubleshooting choice when a system cannot sustain the higher one.
Keep a YouTube stream running without a computer at home
For a camera-based event, FPS is a capture and encoding choice: set it on the source and encoder, then test the stream. For a different use case—keeping uploaded, pre-recorded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream—StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media. It loops uploaded videos or playlists, so a home computer does not have to stay on.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.
StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Its flat per-slot price covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps without re-encoding or quality tiers. It includes 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
