Frame-dragging is the general-relativistic effect in which a rotating mass slightly turns the local inertial frames around it. Earth’s spin therefore twists nearby spacetime, changing the orientation of an orbiting gyroscope by only a few dozen milliarcseconds per year. NASA’s Gravity Probe B mission measured a drift of −37.2±7.2 milliarcseconds per year, close to Einstein’s predicted −39.2 milliarcseconds per year.

What frame-dragging means

Spacetime supplies local directions

In everyday mechanics, an ideal gyroscope keeps pointing in the same direction unless a torque acts on it. General relativity changes what “the same direction” means. Matter and energy curve spacetime, and each freely falling observer carries a local inertial frame: a small reference system in which an untorqued gyroscope maintains its orientation.

A nonrotating spherical mass produces the familiar curvature associated with gravity. A rotating mass adds another feature. Its angular momentum alters the orientation of nearby inertial frames, so a gyroscope that is free of ordinary torques slowly changes its direction relative to distant stars. That dragging of local inertial frames is frame-dragging, also called the Lense–Thirring effect.

Why Earth can twist spacetime

Earth has angular momentum because it spins. In the weak gravitational field around our planet, that rotation creates a gravitomagnetic component of the gravitational field. “Gravitomagnetic” is a useful analogy to magnetism in the equations, not a claim that Earth’s gravity is an ordinary magnetic field. The effect is strongest close to a rapidly rotating body and falls rapidly with distance, which is why the change near low Earth orbit is extremely small.

The predicted motion is not a visible whirlpool in space. Nothing has to circulate around Earth like water in a drain. Instead, the axes that define nonrotating directions are minutely reoriented by the planet’s angular momentum. An orbiting gyroscope reveals the change because its spin axis serves as a very stable direction marker.

Origin of the name

Physicists Josef Lense and Hans Thirring derived the effect in 1918 as a consequence of general relativity. Their result says that a rotating central body should produce a precession of nearby orbital or spin directions. The effect is now commonly called frame-dragging or Lense–Thirring precession.

Frame-dragging versus geodetic precession

An orbiting gyroscope experiences two relativistic influences that are easy to confuse. Geodetic precession comes from the gyroscope’s motion through spacetime curved by mass. Frame-dragging comes from the central body’s rotation. The signals occur together in Earth orbit, but the geodetic signal is far larger.

Feature Frame-dragging (Lense–Thirring) Geodetic precession
Physical cause Rotation and angular momentum of the central body Orbital motion through spacetime curved by mass
What it tests around Earth The gravitomagnetic part of general relativity The curvature produced by Earth’s mass
Gravity Probe B orientation Primarily an east–west spin-axis drift Primarily a north–south drift in the mission’s analysis
Measured drift −37.2±7.2 milliarcseconds per year −6601.8±18.3 milliarcseconds per year
Einstein prediction quoted by NASA −39.2 milliarcseconds per year −6606.1 milliarcseconds per year

The signs in the table specify direction in the coordinate convention used for the experiment. The size of each number is the more intuitive comparison: roughly 39 milliarcseconds per year for frame-dragging versus roughly 6,606 milliarcseconds per year for geodetic precession.

Why the distinction matters

Measuring the large geodetic effect does not automatically establish frame-dragging. A test must separate the much smaller rotation-dependent drift from the curvature-dependent drift and from ordinary spacecraft and instrument disturbances. Gravity Probe B was designed to make that separation possible.

How Gravity Probe B tested Earth’s frame-dragging

A nearly polar orbit and a guide star

NASA and Stanford University’s Gravity Probe B (GP-B) placed the experiment in a nearly polar orbit about 642 kilometers above Earth. The spacecraft repeatedly observed the guide star IM Pegasi with an onboard telescope. The star supplied a fixed reference direction in the sky, while the gyroscopes supplied the nearly inertial directions to be compared against it.

A polar orbit was useful because the predicted relativistic drifts have a clean geometry relative to Earth’s spin axis. As the spacecraft circled the planet, any gradual change in a gyroscope’s spin direction could be expressed in components associated with geodetic precession and frame-dragging.

Four cryogenic spherical gyroscopes

The payload contained four spherical gyroscopes. Each rotor was made to be as close to a perfect sphere as manufacturing allowed and spun inside a cryogenic instrument so that thermal and mechanical disturbances were minimized. The mission’s basic idea was simple: a free spinning rotor should preserve its orientation, making any long-term drift measurable against IM Pegasi.

In practice, the required precision was extraordinary. The frame-dragging signal is only about 39 milliarcseconds per year. One milliarcsecond is one-thousandth of an arcsecond, and an arcsecond is 1/3,600 of a degree. Stanford compared the apparent angular size of the entire frame-dragging signal with the apparent width of Pluto as seen from Earth. A disturbance far smaller than ordinary engineering tolerances could therefore mimic the effect.

Keeping non-relativistic torques out of the result

GP-B used cryogenic operation, drag-free control, magnetic shielding, extensive calibration and detailed modeling of disturbances. Drag-free control allowed the spacecraft to follow the freely falling gyroscopes instead of pushing them through the atmosphere. The experimenters also had to account for magnetic fields, thermal effects, rotor imperfections and other torques that could slowly turn a rotor.

These controls were not optional refinements. A small residual force or an unmodeled coupling could produce a drift larger than the relativistic signal. The final result therefore depended on combining the gyroscope data with calibration measurements and models of the spacecraft environment.

What the telescope and gyroscopes measured

The telescope established the spacecraft’s pointing relative to IM Pegasi. The gyroscopes established how an inertial spin direction changed over time. Comparing the two provided a direct measurement of the accumulated angular drift. Because four gyroscopes operated as independent sensors, their results could be checked against one another and combined in the mission analysis.

What the final numbers show

NASA’s final 2011 analysis reported a frame-dragging drift of −37.2±7.2 milliarcseconds per year. General relativity predicted −39.2 milliarcseconds per year for the GP-B orbit. The measured value differs from the prediction by about 2.0 milliarcseconds per year, well within the quoted one-standard-deviation uncertainty of 7.2 milliarcseconds per year.

The same analysis measured geodetic precession at −6601.8±18.3 milliarcseconds per year, compared with an Einstein prediction of −6606.1 milliarcseconds per year. That agreement provided a simultaneous check of the much larger curvature-driven signal while the smaller rotation-driven signal was extracted.

How to interpret the uncertainty

The ±7.2 figure is an uncertainty on the reported frame-dragging drift, not a range in which the effect might be absent. The predicted value lies inside the measured uncertainty interval. In other words, the data are consistent with the general-relativistic prediction at the precision achieved by the mission.

The result is also not a claim that every possible model of Earth or every future experiment has been tested. It is a measurement for GP-B’s orbit and analysis, with its stated instrument calibration and environmental models. More precise tests can still improve the uncertainty or test alternative gravitational theories more stringently.

A conceptual sequence: how Earth’s rotation produces the signal

  1. Earth rotates. The planet’s mass distribution carries angular momentum.
  2. That angular momentum enters the gravitational field. In general relativity, the rotating source modifies the local inertial structure of spacetime in addition to producing ordinary mass-induced curvature.
  3. A gyroscope follows its local inertial frame. If external torques are suppressed, its spin remains locally nonrotating.
  4. The local frame changes relative to distant space. As the spacecraft orbits Earth, the gyroscope’s locally nonrotating direction slowly shifts relative to the guide star.
  5. The shift accumulates. The change is tiny each orbit but becomes measurable after long observations and careful calibration.

This sequence explains why the effect is described as Earth “dragging” spacetime. The phrase refers to the orientation of inertial frames, not to a material substance being pulled around the planet.

Is frame-dragging real?

Within the accuracy of Gravity Probe B’s final analysis, the measured frame-dragging drift agrees with the general-relativistic prediction. The experiment used a direct gyroscope observable rather than inferring the effect solely from a model of another body. Its four cryogenic rotors, stellar reference and drag-free spacecraft were built specifically to detect the predicted spin-axis drift.

“Real” does not mean large or easy to notice. Near Earth, the effect is so weak that ordinary navigation instruments cannot simply display it. Detecting it required a purpose-built satellite, a nearly polar orbit, cryogenic gyroscopes, magnetic shielding and years of calibration and analysis.

General relativity predicts much stronger frame-dragging signatures near rapidly rotating compact objects. Neutron stars and rotating black holes pack far more mass and angular momentum into a much smaller region than Earth. Their environments are also difficult to probe directly, so Earth-orbit measurements remain valuable controlled tests of the same underlying theory.

Common misconceptions

  • “Frame-dragging is the same as ordinary gravity.” No. Ordinary gravitational attraction and mass-induced spacetime curvature exist whether or not the body rotates. Frame-dragging is the additional rotation-dependent effect.
  • “It is the same as geodetic precession.” No. Geodetic precession is caused by motion through curved spacetime; frame-dragging is caused by the central body’s spin. GP-B measured both.
  • “The 39 milliarcseconds is a one-time angle.” No. It is a rate, approximately 39 milliarcseconds accumulated per year for the GP-B orbit.
  • “The negative sign means the measurement failed.” No. The sign records direction in the experiment’s coordinate system. Agreement is assessed using both direction and magnitude relative to the prediction.
  • “A normal spinning toy gyroscope can reproduce the experiment.” No. A classroom gyroscope is affected by friction, air resistance, support forces and ordinary torques many orders of magnitude larger than the target signal. GP-B required free-falling, cryogenic rotors and extensive environmental control.
  • “Earth twists all nearby objects dramatically.” No. The twist is a small relativistic correction. Its relative importance rises near rapidly rotating compact bodies, not in routine terrestrial settings.

Why this measurement matters

Frame-dragging is one of the distinctive predictions of general relativity because it links gravity to rotation. Measuring it tests whether spacetime responds not only to mass but also to angular momentum in the way Einstein’s equations require.

GP-B also illustrates a broader lesson in experimental physics: a phenomenon can be physically real yet extraordinarily difficult to isolate. The mission had to distinguish a drift comparable to the apparent width of Pluto from magnetic, thermal, mechanical and spacecraft-motion effects. Its result put a measured number on Earth’s gravitomagnetic influence and showed that the number is compatible with the relativistic prediction.

Earth therefore does twist spacetime, but only slightly. The clearest evidence is not a visible swirl; it is the tiny, accumulated change in an orbiting gyroscope’s spin direction, measured against a distant star and found to match the Lense–Thirring effect predicted in 1918.
