frag.exe is not a unique Windows component. The same filename appears in unrelated software, including a game depot and an old Microsoft Hardware Compatibility Test archive; FRAGSTATS documentation also refers to a different executable named frg.exe. A filename alone therefore cannot tell you whether a copy is legitimate or malicious.
Before deleting anything, identify the exact path, owning application, publisher, digital signature, parent process and command line. Then scan the file with current Microsoft Defender intelligence. If the copy belongs to a clean application, repair or reinstall that application from its official source. If Defender detects it or the file has an unexplained location and persistence, remove the associated unwanted software and run an offline scan.

What frag.exe can refer to
Windows does not reserve the name frag.exe for one built-in service. Any software publisher can choose that filename, and unrelated programs can therefore create files with the same name. The examples below demonstrate why the name must be investigated in context.
| Context | What is documented | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| FRAGSTATS | FRAGSTATS documentation describes an executable named frg.exe, launched with model, batch and output arguments. |
This is a similar-looking but distinct filename. Do not assume a file called frag.exe is the FRAGSTATS program. |
| Game software | A 2020 game depot listing contains Frag.exe. |
A game installation can legitimately contain the name, depending on the title and its installation directory. |
| Microsoft HCT archive | An old Hardware Compatibility Test archive lists frag.exe beneath an iostress test directory. |
Legacy test tools can also contain the name. Their age and purpose should be verified before use. |
Case does not create a separate Windows identity: Frag.exe and frag.exe normally refer to the same spelling on a case-insensitive Windows volume. The decisive evidence is the complete path and the program that launched it, not capitalization or the icon shown in Task Manager.

Is frag.exe a virus or malware?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Microsoft evaluates malware and potentially unwanted applications by behavior such as deception, installation without meaningful choice, persistence, interference with security controls and other unwanted activity. A file in a vendor’s expected directory with a valid signature and a normal parent process is a different situation from an unsigned copy that starts from a temporary folder and recreates itself after you terminate it.
Evidence that supports a legitimate installation
- The path is beneath the folder of an application you intentionally installed, rather than a random temporary or user-data directory.
- File Properties identifies the expected publisher and the digital signature is valid and current.
- The parent process and command line match a game launcher, test utility or other program you recognize.
- The file’s timestamps fit the application’s installation or update, and the program stops when its owning application closes.
- Microsoft Defender and other security checks do not report the file.
Evidence that warrants investigation
- The file appears in
%Temp%, a randomly named folder, a user profile data directory or another location unrelated to installed software. - The publisher is missing, the signature is invalid, or the file claims to be from a company you did not install.
- It launches from an unexpected startup entry, scheduled task or script, or a parent process you cannot explain.
- It repeatedly returns after deletion, changes security settings, displays deceptive prompts or causes other unwanted behavior.
- Defender reports a detection, including a detection specifically associated with the file or its parent application.
SmartScreen reputation is useful but not conclusive. Microsoft says an App Reputation warning is not, by itself, proof that a download is malicious; uncommon or newly distributed files can lack reputation. Treat the warning as a reason to verify the publisher, source and hash rather than as a verdict.
Identify the exact copy before changing it
Do not delete a process merely because its name looks unfamiliar. Record enough information to identify the owner and to restore the application if the file turns out to be legitimate.
- Locate the executable in Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, open the Details tab, locatefrag.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process exits before you can select it, note when it appears and continue with the startup and scheduled-task checks below. - Inspect the process tree. Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can show the full path, parent process, command line, owning account and loaded handles or DLLs. A game launcher, test harness or application executable as the parent is meaningful context; a script host or an unrelated program requires closer review.
- Check File Properties. Right-click the file, select Properties and review Details for product and publisher information. On Digital Signatures, select a signature and choose Details to confirm that Windows reports it as valid. An absent signature is not automatic proof of malware, but it removes one useful confirmation.
- Record the command line and timestamps. The command line can reveal a model file, batch file, game parameter or a suspicious script location. Note creation and modification dates and compare them with the installation or update date of the application that should own the file.
- Calculate a hash if you need to compare copies. In PowerShell, use
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath 'C:fullpathfrag.exe'. A hash is a precise fingerprint; it becomes useful when the software vendor or your organization’s administrator provides a trusted value for comparison. - Check the signature from PowerShell when the graphical view is unclear. Run
Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath 'C:fullpathfrag.exe'and record theStatusand signer. Do not treat a valid signature as permission to ignore unexpected behavior: a signed application can still be unwanted, compromised or misused.
Keep the path, signer, hash, parent process, command line and exact error message in a note. Those details let the application’s vendor or a support technician distinguish a missing application file from an active security incident.

Scan a suspicious or unidentified copy
Use current security intelligence before deciding that the file is safe. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Protection updates, choose Check for updates, then return to Scan options, select Full scan and choose Scan now. A full scan examines the system rather than only the visible frag.exe file.
If a detection appears
Allow Microsoft Defender to quarantine or remove the detected item, and follow its recommended restart. Do not restore the file merely because an application stops working; first establish whether the application is legitimate and obtain a clean replacement from its official source. Microsoft Security Intelligence’s entry for Trojan:Win32/Fragtor.A states that Defender detects and removes that threat, but remnants can remain, so an updated full scan is important. That statement applies to that named threat, not to every file called frag.exe.
If the unwanted behavior continues
Run Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan > Scan now. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can inspect files that are difficult to remove while Windows is running. Save work first and allow the restart to finish. After Windows returns, review Protection history, update intelligence again if offered and run another full scan.

Never replace a missing or quarantined executable with a download from a generic EXE website. A similarly named file can belong to different software, contain unwanted code or simply be the wrong version. Use the owner application’s installer, repair function or official store instead.

Remove frag.exe safely
When it belongs to an application you recognize
- Close the application and its launcher. If the process remains, end it from Task Manager only after saving work.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10, to select the owning application and choose Uninstall. For older software, use its own uninstaller or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- If you want to keep the application, use its Repair or Verify/Repair files option when available, then reinstall from the official vendor or store if repair fails.
- Restart and confirm that the expected application works. Only remove a leftover file after the application has been uninstalled and Defender reports no active threat.
When Defender identifies unwanted software
- Let Defender quarantine or remove the detection and complete the requested restart.
- In Settings > Apps, uninstall the associated program if it is listed and you did not intentionally install it.
- Open Task Manager’s Startup apps tab and disable an entry that clearly points to the removed program. Do not disable random Windows entries merely because their names are unfamiliar.
- Open Task Scheduler and inspect tasks whose action points to the same path. Delete a task only when you have confirmed that it belongs to the unwanted program; an incorrect deletion can break legitimate software.
- Run Defender Offline followed by a full scan after the uninstall. Persistent detections should be escalated to Microsoft or a qualified administrator rather than handled by repeated manual deletion.
When the file is an orphan with no owner
An orphan can remain after an incomplete uninstall or a failed update. First export or record its path and hash, then check Task Manager startup entries and Task Scheduler for references to that exact path. Disable or remove the confirmed orphaned reference, restart, scan, and delete the file only when no legitimate application needs it. If Windows reports that the file is in use, identify the locking process in Process Explorer instead of forcing deletion.
Fix a frag.exe application error
The exact wording and timing matter. Capture the complete dialog, including any module name or status code, and note whether the error appears at Windows sign-in, when launching a game, while running a test, or after closing another program. Then match the repair to the application that owns the path.
Missing-file or corrupted-file message
Use the application’s repair option or reinstall it from its official installer or store. For a game, use the launcher’s built-in file verification or repair feature if it provides one. For a specialist test program, reinstall the same supported release and restore its model, batch and output files from a known-good backup. Do not download a standalone frag.exe to satisfy the message: the missing file may have version-specific dependencies, configuration or licensing that a random replacement will not contain.

Error immediately after an update
Check whether the update changed the installation directory or left an old shortcut pointing at a deleted path. Use the executable location and command line recorded earlier to correct the shortcut or reinstall the affected application. If the application offers a rollback, use the vendor’s documented rollback rather than replacing individual binaries.

Error only when Windows starts
Inspect Task Manager > Startup apps and Task Scheduler for an entry that launches the old path. Disable the confirmed orphan, restart and test. If the error disappears and no legitimate program requires the entry, remove the associated application through its normal uninstaller.
Error after a security cleanup
A clean application may fail because Defender removed one of its files. Verify the detection name and path in Protection history, then reinstall the application from its official source. If the replacement is detected again, stop reinstalling and ask the vendor to explain the detection; repeated exclusions can hide a real threat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does frag.exe keep running?
A process can return for several different reasons, and the parent process usually distinguishes them:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Application relaunch: a game launcher, updater or test harness starts the executable whenever its main program runs or crashes.
- Startup registration: a shortcut or startup entry launches it at sign-in.
- Scheduled task: Windows Task Scheduler starts it at logon, on a timer or after an event.
- Service or helper process: another installed component monitors and restarts it.
- Unwanted persistence: a suspicious program recreates the file or its launch entry after removal.
In Process Explorer, inspect the parent process and command line at the moment frag.exe appears. Then check the corresponding startup entry and scheduled task. Ending the process proves only that it stopped once; it does not remove the mechanism that launches it. If the parent is a legitimate application, change that application’s startup or update settings or uninstall it. If the parent is unknown or Defender reports a detection, follow the quarantine and offline-scan procedure instead.
Best Value
Can I delete frag.exe?
| What you found | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Expected vendor directory, valid signature, recognized parent application | Keep it. Repair or reinstall the owning application only if it is broken. |
| File is left behind after you intentionally uninstalled its application | Scan first, remove confirmed startup references, then delete the orphan. |
| Defender detection or unexplained persistence | Quarantine or remove through Defender, uninstall the associated unwanted software and run Defender Offline; do not rely on manual deletion alone. |
| Unknown file required by a program you still use | Do not delete it until the program’s vendor confirms its role. Reinstall from the official source if corruption is suspected. |
Deleting an executable while its legitimate application is installed can create a new missing-file error, and deleting only the visible copy of an unwanted program can leave its launcher or scheduled task behind. Quarantine is safer than permanent deletion while you are still collecting evidence.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you written down the full path rather than only the filename?
- Do the publisher and digital signature match the application you intended to install?
- Does the parent process and command line explain why the file is running?
- Is the location expected for that application, or is it temporary, random or unexplained?
- Did current Defender intelligence and a full scan report anything?
- If a detection persists, have you completed an Offline scan?
- If the file is clean but broken, have you used the owning application’s repair or official reinstall path?
- Have you preserved the exact error text for the vendor before deleting files?
When to contact support
Contact the owner application’s support team when the file has a valid signature and expected path but fails after an official repair or reinstall. Include the application’s version, Windows edition, full error text, executable path, command line, signature status and hash. Contact Microsoft or your organization’s security administrator when Defender reports a threat that returns after Offline scanning, when security settings are being changed without permission, or when you cannot identify the parent process. Do not send an executable to an untrusted support address; provide the recorded metadata first and follow the support channel’s instructions.
Bottom line
frag.exe is an ambiguous filename, not a diagnosis. Identify the copy, verify its owner and signature, scan with updated Defender intelligence, and then either repair the legitimate application or remove the confirmed unwanted software. A generic filename-based deletion or replacement is the least reliable fix.
