fph.exe is not a unique Windows component. The same filename has been used by third-party software, including Fasoo DRM/fph Module and older PC Tools Spyware Doctor records. A copy in C:Program FilesFasoo DRM with a valid Fasoo.com, Inc. signature can be legitimate when you intentionally use Fasoo software. An unsigned copy in a temporary, user-profile or otherwise unexpected folder, or a file flagged by current security software, deserves investigation before it is allowed to run.
The filename alone cannot tell you whether fph.exe is safe. Identify its full path, digital signer, parent application, version and exact hash first. Then repair or remove the owning program rather than deleting a single executable blindly.

What fph.exe is
Windows uses the .exe extension for executable programs, but it does not reserve the name fph.exe for one Microsoft service. File databases associate that name with more than one product:
- A Fasoo DRM component described as “Fasoo SCP Service” or an fph Module.
- Older records associated with PC Tools Spyware Doctor.
Those products can have different versions, hashes, launch methods and behavior even though the filename is identical. One documented Fasoo variant is normally installed beneath C:Program FilesFasoo DRM and is reported as digitally signed by Fasoo.com, Inc. An older Fasoo record lists product/file version 1.5.1.6 and a special build date of 2005-07-08. That age is a reminder that a file record for one variant does not authenticate every other copy called fph.exe.

fph.exe is not a protected Windows core file. File.net classifies it as a non-essential process and notes that malware can imitate the name. Consequently, “fph.exe” in Task Manager is only a starting clue; the path and provenance determine what you are actually looking at.
Is fph.exe safe?
There is no universal safe-or-malware verdict for the filename. Use several independent indicators together:

File.net gives fph.exe a 54% dangerous technical rating. That is the site’s heuristic, not a Microsoft or antivirus determination. A FreeFixer record for one sampled Fasoo-associated hash reported detections by 3 of 54 VirusTotal engines when the page was accessed in 2026; this is a historical, sample-specific snapshot and is not a current detection rate for every fph.exe. Another older FreeFixer page records a 67% removal vote from only six users. Such a tiny, self-selected poll cannot establish that the file is malware.

Reports associated with fph.exe include memory read or write faults, a “Fasoo SCP Service has stopped working” dialog, a nonresponsive process, and “fph.exe is not a valid Win32 application.” The same message can have different causes depending on the copy involved:

- Damaged or incomplete installation: the parent DRM or legacy security program may have missing files, mismatched DLLs or a broken service registration.
- Version conflict: an old module can collide with a newer application, Windows update or another driver or security component.
- Wrong executable: a file with the right name but the wrong format, architecture or contents can trigger the Win32 error.
- Permission or service problems: the process may be unable to read a required file, start under its service account or access an open handle.
- Unwanted or malicious replacement: a rogue program can copy a familiar name into a different directory.
- Windows component corruption: this is a separate possibility; System File Checker can repair protected Windows files, but it does not authenticate third-party fph.exe.
Identify the exact file before changing anything
Capture evidence while the error is visible. Do not begin by deleting the executable or downloading a replacement from an EXE or DLL repository.
1. Open the file location from Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Windows 11, select Details; on Windows 10, select the Details tab if necessary.
- Right-click
fph.exeand choose Open file location. If the process has already exited, use the error dialog, a startup entry or a service entry to locate the file instead. - Copy the complete path, including the drive letter, and note the file size, product name, file version and modified date shown in Properties.
A path such as C:Program FilesFasoo DRM is materially different from a path under %TEMP%, AppDataLocalTemp, a user profile or a randomly named directory. Location is evidence, not proof: a malicious file can be placed in a plausible folder, and an unwanted but signed program can be installed under Program Files.
2. Check the digital signature
- Right-click the executable, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Record the signer name and certificate status. A Fasoo-associated copy should identify Fasoo.com, Inc.; an absent, invalid or unrelated signature changes the risk assessment.
A signature verifies that the signed content came from the certificate holder and has not changed since signing. It does not prove that the software is compatible with your system or that you still want it installed.

3. Inspect the parent process and handles
Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can show the process tree, owning account, open handles and loaded DLLs. Run it with appropriate privileges, locate fph.exe, and inspect which service or application launched it. A Fasoo service parent supports the Fasoo explanation; an unexpected script, temporary launcher or unrelated program warrants a deeper scan. Loaded modules and open handles can also reveal which component is failing when the process reports a memory or DLL error.

4. Record a hash and scan the exact sample
Use an up-to-date security product to scan the file in place. If you submit it to a multi-engine service, submit the exact file or its cryptographic hash and preserve the result with the path and signature information. A result for another fph.exe, another version or another hash does not establish the status of yours. Do not disable protection merely to make the process run.
Manual fixes for common situations
Fasoo software is intentional and the file is signed
If you use an application that depends on Fasoo DRM and the executable is in the expected directory with a valid Fasoo.com, Inc. signature, do not delete it. First close the application that uses the DRM component and restart Windows. If the error returns, use that application’s official installer or repair option to restore its service and files. An update or clean reinstall of the owning Fasoo product is safer than copying an isolated fph.exe from another computer.
Check whether the failure began immediately after an application or Windows update. If the parent application offers a documented compatibility update, apply it through the application’s normal update channel. Keep a record of the original version and path so that you can undo a change if the DRM-protected application stops launching.

The parent application is unwanted or obsolete
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. On older systems, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the Fasoo product, PC Tools Spyware Doctor or another application that Process Explorer identified as the owner.
- Select Uninstall and follow the vendor’s removal steps. If the uninstaller offers to stop a service or remove a startup component, allow it to complete.
- Restart Windows. Recheck Task Manager, Services and startup apps for the old entry.
Removing only fph.exe can leave a service registration, scheduled task or startup command that repeatedly generates errors. If the normal uninstaller fails, use Windows’ installed-app repair or change option first, then retry the uninstall. Preserve the installer or recovery information until you have confirmed that the parent application is gone.

The file is unsigned, misplaced or detected
- Disconnect the computer from sensitive work if you suspect active compromise, but do not delete evidence before scanning.
- Allow your current security software to quarantine the exact file, or quarantine it manually if the product provides that option.
- Record the hash, path, signer and the process that launched it. Keep the security product’s detection name and date.
- Review installed applications, services, startup entries and scheduled tasks for the parent that created the file.
- After quarantine, reboot and run another full scan. If a legitimate application breaks, restore only after verifying its installer and signer.
Do not trust a replacement downloaded from a generic DLL or EXE repository. Even a file with the same name can have a different version, architecture or malicious payload.
“fph.exe is not a valid Win32 application”
This message commonly indicates that Windows cannot parse the file as a valid executable for the system. A partial download, corruption, wrong architecture, renamed non-executable file or malicious replacement can all produce it. Verify the path and signature, compare the file version with the owning application’s records, and scan it. If the file belongs to software you need, repair or reinstall that parent application using its official installer. Do not solve the message by downloading a random fph.exe.
“Fasoo SCP Service has stopped working” or a nonresponsive process
- Note whether the error occurs at startup, when opening one DRM-protected document, or continuously in the background.
- Use Process Explorer to identify the service parent and loaded DLLs. Close the dependent application and restart Windows.
- Repair or update the identified Fasoo product. If you no longer need it, uninstall the parent application and reboot.
- Check whether another security product is blocking the service. Do not create a permanent exclusion until the file’s signer and hash are verified.
- If the process still crashes, capture the Windows error details and the application version for the software vendor’s support channel.
Memory read/write faults
A memory exception does not by itself indicate malware. It can result from a damaged module, incompatible version, conflicting injected DLL or a failing parent application. Start with path, signer and parent checks, then repair or remove the owner. If several unrelated programs also crash, test Windows memory and hardware using the diagnostic tools appropriate to your edition; an fph.exe-specific fix will not correct a system-wide hardware fault.

Run System File Checker only for Windows-file symptoms
Microsoft describes System File Checker as a utility that “scans and verifies the integrity of all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct versions.” It is appropriate when Windows reports protected-file corruption or multiple built-in components are damaged, not as a way to decide whether a third-party fph.exe is genuine.
- Save work and open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. - Read the final result. If Windows repaired files, restart and test the original application. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, preserve the result and use Microsoft’s documented servicing guidance rather than replacing fph.exe manually.
SFC may repair a damaged Windows dependency used by a third-party program, but it will not validate the Fasoo signature, remove a rogue copy or reinstall the parent application.
Recheck startup after every change
After uninstalling, quarantining or repairing the owner, restart Windows. Confirm that the old service or startup entry is gone, the original error no longer appears, and the application that needed the component behaves normally. If fph.exe returns, identify what recreated it before taking another action; a scheduled task, repair process or still-installed parent may be responsible.

What not to do
- Do not judge safety from the filename, icon or Task Manager description alone.
- Do not treat a database’s danger percentage or a handful of user votes as a malware verdict.
- Do not delete fph.exe before identifying the parent; orphaned services and startup entries can create new errors.
- Do not download a replacement executable from an unverified repository.
- Do not disable antivirus or security protections permanently to suppress a crash.
- Do not run SFC expecting it to authenticate or reinstall a Fasoo or PC Tools component.

fph.exe is a shared third-party filename, not a Windows identity. A signed Fasoo copy in the expected Fasoo DRM directory can be normal, while an unsigned or misplaced copy must be treated as untrusted until its hash, parent process and security-scan result are clear. Capture evidence first, repair or uninstall the owning application, use quarantine for suspicious files, and reserve sfc /scannow for Windows protected-file problems.
