The denominator is usually next-twelve-months (NTM) EBITDA or the next fiscal year’s estimate. A complete answer therefore names the valuation date, forecast period, EBITDA definition and forecast source—not just a number followed by “x.”
What forward EV/EBITDA measures
Enterprise value represents the value of the operating business attributable to all capital providers, rather than only the value of common shares. Forward EV/EBITDA compares that value with the operating profit the business is expected to produce in a future period. Because EBITDA excludes interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, the ratio is often useful for comparing businesses with different financing structures, but it is not a measure of cash available to investors.

The word forward describes the denominator. A trailing EV/EBITDA uses historical EBITDA; a forward multiple uses an estimate. “Forward” is incomplete unless you identify the horizon. NTM means the next 12 months from the valuation date. An alternative is a named fiscal year, such as the estimate for the year ending December 31, 2027. Grant Thornton Austria uses an NTM convention in its forward chart, while valuation texts also present fiscal-year estimates as valid choices.

Build enterprise value at the valuation date
A practical simplified calculation is:
Enterprise value = equity value + debt − cash
In a public-company calculation, equity value is usually the market capitalization on the chosen date: share price multiplied by the relevant number of shares. The broader definition can include the market values of common equity, debt and preferred equity, less cash and investments. Depending on the company and the earnings scope, you may also need to include noncontrolling interests and other material claims consistently. The appropriate components depend on what the EBITDA figure consolidates.
Equity value
Use the share price and share count that correspond to the same date. If your source uses a different date, do not silently combine it with a forecast or balance-sheet figure from another point in time. State whether the share count is basic, diluted or another convention, and apply the same policy across companies being compared.
Debt and other claims
Add interest-bearing borrowings that represent claims on the business, including the debt categories your data source treats as part of enterprise value. Preferred equity, noncontrolling interests and other material claims may also belong in the numerator. Their inclusion should match the ownership and consolidation represented by the EBITDA denominator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCash and investments
Subtract cash and relevant investments because those assets reduce the net cost of acquiring the operating business. Cash is included in the gross enterprise-value bridge, but the income earned on that cash is generally not included in EBITDA. Subtracting cash therefore keeps the numerator aligned with the operating earnings measure. Aswath Damodaran’s EV/EBITDA valuation chapter discusses this bridge and related adjustments.
Ownership and cross-holdings
Check whether the numerator and denominator describe the same economic interest. Cross-holdings can distort the ratio when enterprise value includes an investment whose operating earnings are absent from EBITDA. The reverse problem occurs when consolidated EBITDA includes earnings that do not match the ownership represented in enterprise value. Make the treatment explicit rather than assuming a vendor’s screen has resolved it.
Choose a defensible forward EBITDA estimate
The denominator must identify both the period and the basis of the forecast. Common choices include:
- NTM consensus EBITDA: an aggregation of analysts’ estimates for the next 12 months.
- Next fiscal-year EBITDA: the estimate for a named reporting year.
- Company guidance: management’s published outlook, where available.
- Another forecast: a documented internal or third-party estimate, provided its assumptions are disclosed.
Also state whether EBITDA is reported or adjusted. “Adjusted EBITDA” can remove items that a company or analyst considers unusual, but adjustment policies differ. A multiple calculated with reported EBITDA should not be compared casually with one based on an aggressively adjusted figure. Keep currency, consolidation scope and adjustment policy consistent between enterprise value and EBITDA, and between the companies in a peer set.

Forecasts can change after the valuation date. Record the date on which the estimate was available and identify the source. A multiple calculated with an estimate published after the valuation date is not a contemporaneous forward multiple, even if the arithmetic is correct.
Calculate forward EV/EBITDA step by step
- Set the valuation date. Write down the date for the share price, market capitalization and balance-sheet inputs.
- Obtain equity value. Use the market capitalization for that date, or calculate it from the matching share price and share count.
- Construct enterprise value. Add debt and any material preferred-equity or noncontrolling-interest claims required by the company’s scope, then subtract cash and relevant investments.
- Select the forecast period. Label it NTM, a named fiscal year or another precise horizon.
- Collect forecast EBITDA. Identify whether the estimate is company guidance, analyst consensus or another forecast, and whether it is reported or adjusted.
- Check alignment. Confirm that the numerator and denominator use the same currency, date convention, consolidation scope and adjustment basis.
- Divide enterprise value by forecast EBITDA. Report the result as a multiple, normally with an “x” suffix, and retain enough precision to make the calculation auditable.
Worked example: why the period label matters
Corporate Finance Institute published the following educational example in 2018. It is an illustration, not current company data:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Market capitalization (March 1, 2018) | $69.3 billion |
| Debt | $1.4 billion |
| Cash | $0.3 billion |
| Calculated enterprise value | $70.4 billion |
| Reported 2017 EBITDA | $5.04 billion |
| Consensus 2018 forecast EBITDA | $5.5 billion |
| Forward EV/EBITDA | 12.8x |
The enterprise-value bridge is $69.3 billion + $1.4 billion − $0.3 billion = $70.4 billion. Dividing that figure by the forecast 2018 EBITDA of $5.5 billion produces approximately 12.8x. Using the reported 2017 EBITDA instead would produce a different, trailing-style multiple. The example demonstrates why the forecast period belongs in the label and in the calculation record. The original worked example is available from Corporate Finance Institute.
How to interpret the result
A multiple is a relative price, not a verdict
A forward EV/EBITDA of 12.8x means the enterprise value equals 12.8 times the selected forecast period’s EBITDA. It does not mean investors will receive 12.8 years of cash, nor does it prove that the company is cheap or expensive. A lower multiple can reflect weaker growth, higher risk, lower margins, greater capital needs or a forecast that is unusually optimistic. A higher multiple can reflect stronger expected growth, durable margins, lower perceived risk or better economics.

Compare like with like
Use the same horizon when comparing companies. NTM for one company and a distant fiscal-year estimate for another can create a misleading spread. Align the date of each estimate, the currency, reported-versus-adjusted EBITDA policy and the enterprise-value components.
Then assess whether the businesses have similar operating economics:
- Expected revenue and EBITDA growth
- Operating margins
- Capital intensity and maintenance capital expenditure
- Business and balance-sheet risk
- Working-capital requirements
- Accounting and adjustment policies
There is no universal “normal” EV/EBITDA multiple. Sector, business model, market conditions, estimate date and forecast basis all change the appropriate comparison. Grant Thornton Austria’s forward chart is dated 31 August 2026; its values are time-sensitive and should not be treated as permanent sector benchmarks. The chart is available at Grant Thornton Austria.

Forward versus trailing
Forward EV/EBITDA can be below the trailing multiple when EBITDA is expected to grow. It can be above the trailing multiple when forecast EBITDA is expected to decline. The direction is informative only after you verify that the periods, adjustments and forecast assumptions are comparable.

Why EBITDA is useful—and where it stops
Because EBITDA excludes interest, it can make operating comparisons less sensitive to whether a company uses more debt or more equity. Excluding taxes and non-cash depreciation and amortization can also make businesses with different asset ages or tax situations easier to compare at an operating level.
Those exclusions are also the main limitation. EBITDA does not deduct capital expenditure, working-capital investment, interest, taxes or required debt repayment. Two companies with the same EBITDA can have very different cash generation if one must continually replace expensive equipment or carry substantially more inventory and receivables. Forward EV/EBITDA should therefore be read alongside cash-flow, leverage, reinvestment and balance-sheet analysis, not as a substitute for it.
Damodaran’s discussion of multiples also explains why enterprise-value measures can be useful when earnings are unavailable or distorted. In that context, he attributes the following observation to T.C. Robillard, identified as an analyst at Salomon Smith Barney: “But when there are no earnings, you have to get at their value somehow.” The point is that an operating multiple can provide a comparison framework when net income is negative; it does not remove the need to examine the reasons for those losses.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Leaving “forward” undefined
Problem: A headline says “forward EV/EBITDA” without saying NTM or which fiscal year.
Fix: Put the period in the label, such as “NTM forward EV/EBITDA as of March 1, 2026” or “FY2027E EV/EBITDA.”

Mixing dates
Problem: The share price is from one date, debt and cash from another, and the forecast was revised later.
Fix: Freeze the valuation date, record the forecast publication date and explain any permitted reporting lag in the inputs.
Using market capitalization as enterprise value
Problem: Debt is ignored, or cash is not deducted.
Fix: Build the enterprise-value bridge and document preferred equity, noncontrolling interests and other claims when material.
Comparing incompatible EBITDA figures
Problem: One company uses reported EBITDA while another uses a heavily adjusted company-defined measure.
Fix: Use a consistent adjustment policy or show separate multiples and explain the differences.
Treating EBITDA as cash flow
Problem: A low multiple is interpreted as a guaranteed cash return.
Fix: Examine capital spending, working capital, taxes, interest and debt obligations before drawing an investment conclusion.

Trusting a screen without checking its inputs
Problem: A data provider’s multiple is copied without knowing its forecast source or EV definition.
Fix: Reconcile the displayed value to primary filings, company guidance or a documented consensus source, and note any differences.
A transparent spreadsheet layout
A simple worksheet can make the calculation reproducible. Put the valuation date at the top, then create separate cells for market capitalization, debt, preferred equity, noncontrolling interests, cash and investments. Add a clearly labeled enterprise-value subtotal. In a second block, record the forecast period, EBITDA amount, forecast source, publication date, currency and reported-versus-adjusted status. The final cell divides the subtotal by the forecast EBITDA.
Keep the unrounded inputs in the sheet and display the multiple rounded to a sensible precision. If you update the share price or forecast, preserve the previous date-stamped version so a reader can see why the multiple changed. A spreadsheet organizes the evidence; it does not validate an inconsistent forecast or an incorrect enterprise-value definition.
When this multiple belongs in a broader valuation
Forward EV/EBITDA is most informative as one view in a set. Pair it with leverage measures, free-cash-flow analysis, growth and margin forecasts, return on invested capital, and an assessment of capital expenditure and working-capital needs. For companies with negative or highly volatile EBITDA, the ratio may be unstable or meaningless; revenue, gross-profit or asset-based measures may be more appropriate starting points, subject to their own limitations.
The defensible conclusion is narrow: forward EV/EBITDA tells you how many units of a specified forecast EBITDA are represented by enterprise value on a specified date. Its usefulness depends on transparent inputs, aligned periods and genuinely comparable businesses—not on the multiple’s size alone.
