What Is foldermarker.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix Its Windows Errors

foldermarker.exe is normally the Windows executable installed with Folder Marker, a utility that changes folder colors and icons. The legitimate product is currently listed as version 4.9.1 for Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11, in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. However, a filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is genuine. Verify its location and publisher, inspect any download warning or signature, and scan it before running it.

What foldermarker.exe does

Folder Marker adds a way to label folders visually. Instead of opening each folder to see its contents, you can assign a color or image-coded icon for work status, priority, completion or information type. The vendor says the change is available from a folder’s right-click context menu and can be made in two mouse clicks.

The executable that provides this integration is usually named foldermarker.exe. It may appear briefly when the program applies an icon, or remain active while its Explorer integration is available. Seeing the process in Task Manager is therefore not automatically evidence of malware.

Is foldermarker.exe safe or a virus?

A genuine copy obtained from the official Folder Marker source can be a normal utility. An identically named executable in a temporary directory, an email attachment, a peer-to-peer download or an unrelated software bundle deserves suspicion. Malware commonly uses familiar names and icons to appear harmless.

Microsoft documents malware that uses an icon making an executable “look like a folder.” A file named new folder.exe, foldermarker.exe or anything similar can still be an executable with harmful behavior. Treat the name and icon as clues, never as authentication.

Check provenance before opening it

  1. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the complete path. A location under the Folder Marker installation directory is more consistent with a legitimate installation than a random user-download or temporary folder.
  2. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the General tab. Confirm that the file type is an application and look for the publisher or product description on the Details tab.
  3. On the Digital Signatures tab, inspect any signature that Windows reports. Check that the signer is the expected software publisher and that Windows says the signature is valid. A missing signature is not conclusive by itself, but it removes one useful verification point.
  4. If the file was downloaded, read the Windows security message in Properties. Windows Attachment Manager can attach Mark-of-the-Web information to downloaded files, display a warning or block execution. Microsoft advises unblocking files only when the source is trusted.
  5. Right-click the file and choose the Microsoft Defender scanning option, or scan it with another current antivirus already installed on the computer. Allow the scanner to quarantine or remove it if it reports a threat.

Do not run a suspicious copy merely to see what it does. If the path, publisher, file type or download history does not match your expectations, quarantine it and investigate the source instead.

Why foldermarker.exe appears in Task Manager

Folder Marker integrates with Windows Explorer so that a context-menu command can apply a folder icon. The process may therefore appear while the application or its shell component is being used. A short-lived process after changing a folder is less concerning than an executable that starts from an unexplained directory, recreates itself after removal or generates repeated security alerts.

What to inspect when it stays running

  • Path: use Open file location and compare it with the folder where you intentionally installed Folder Marker.
  • Publisher and version: inspect Properties rather than relying on the process name displayed in Task Manager.
  • Security status: run a Defender scan, especially if you did not install Folder Marker or the process appeared after opening an unexpected file.
  • Behavior: note whether it returns after you end the task, launches at sign-in without a known installation, or causes repeated crashes. Those patterns warrant an uninstall and a broader malware check.

How to remove foldermarker.exe safely

Removing only the executable can break the Explorer integration and leave custom-folder metadata behind. Uninstall the program first, then investigate leftovers.

  1. Save any information you need about your custom folders. Folder Marker changes folder display metadata; deleting the program does not necessarily restore every folder’s previous icon.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Windows 10, locate Folder Marker, open its menu and choose Uninstall. On older systems, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Folder Marker and choose Uninstall.
  3. If the uninstall program asks whether to close Explorer or related processes, save your work and allow it to do so. If foldermarker.exe remains active, open Task Manager, select it and choose End task before retrying the uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows. Check the right-click menu on a test folder. The Folder Marker command should be gone after a complete uninstall.
  5. Run a Defender scan of the former installation directory and your Downloads folder. If the file was unexpected or detected as malicious, follow Defender’s quarantine and removal instructions rather than restoring it.
  6. Do not manually delete files with the same name from unrelated directories until you have verified their origin. Another application could use a coincidentally similar name.

If you only want to stop the process temporarily, use End task in Task Manager. That is not a removal method: Explorer integration may stop working until the program is restarted or Windows is rebooted.

Fix a missing “Mark Folder” right-click command

The vendor’s knowledgebase recommends reinstalling Folder Marker and ensuring that the latest version is installed when the command does not appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that Folder Marker is listed under Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  2. Restart Windows and test a normal local folder, such as one created under your user profile. This separates a missing shell integration from a network or permission problem.
  3. If the command is still absent, uninstall Folder Marker, restart, and install the current 4.9.1 package obtained from the official Folder Marker source. Choose the installer architecture that matches your Windows installation when the download offers a choice.
  4. After installation, right-click a test folder and look for the Folder Marker command. If it appears for local folders but not a particular share, follow the network troubleshooting steps below.

A third-party installer or an old copy may omit the Explorer integration or install a damaged shell component. Reinstalling from the official source is safer than downloading a replacement DLL from an unknown website.

Fix folders that stay yellow or do not show their custom icons

This symptom can have several causes: the application did not install correctly, Explorer is showing stale icon data, the folder’s metadata is inaccessible, or Windows has refused the desktop customization because its source is untrusted.

Refresh the local view first

  1. Apply a different Folder Marker icon to a newly created local test folder.
  2. Close every File Explorer window, then open Explorer again and check the folder.
  3. Restart Windows if the icon remains stale. This refreshes Explorer’s view and helps distinguish a display cache problem from a failed write.
  4. Verify that your account can create and modify files in the folder. A read-only location, controlled share or policy-restricted directory may prevent the metadata from being written.

Check desktop.ini and trust status

Windows stores many folder customizations in a hidden desktop.ini file. The file can be present while Windows declines to use it if it came from an untrusted source or a remote location. Do not replace a trusted file with one downloaded from an unknown site.

On June 9, 2026, Microsoft changed Windows security behavior so that desktop.ini customizations from untrusted sources, including files carrying Mark-of-the-Web information or some remote paths, may be ignored. That change can make previously customized folders appear with default icons even though Folder Marker is installed correctly.

Unblock-File -Path "C:pathdesktop.ini"

Replace the path with the exact trusted file. Do not run this command on unknown content, and do not broadly disable Windows protections merely to restore an icon. Microsoft recommends narrowly scoping any trusted-source policy and using it only when necessary.

Fix network folders that work locally but fail on a share

The vendor has a separate Windows 10/11 article for network-folder problems and notes that the cause may be the network environment or path handling rather than the Folder Marker 4.7 update itself.

  1. Apply an icon to a local folder first. If local folders work, the installation and basic Explorer integration are probably functioning.
  2. Test the same operation on the network share while signed in with the account that normally uses it.
  3. Ask the share administrator to verify that you have permission to create or modify the folder’s metadata files. Read-only access can allow browsing while preventing customization.
  4. Check whether the path is mapped, uses a UNC address, or crosses a trust boundary. Different path types can be subject to different Windows security policies.
  5. Review trust-zone and security policy with an administrator before changing anything. Do not weaken protections for an entire company share to fix one folder.

If the same share works from one computer but not another, compare Windows updates, account permissions and trust-policy settings rather than repeatedly reinstalling Folder Marker.

Why Dropbox or copied folders lose their appearance

The vendor says Dropbox can ignore Folder Marker’s distributable desktop metadata. As a result, a folder that is colored on one computer may display the default color on another computer or after synchronization. The same limitation can affect copied folders when the metadata is not preserved or when Windows treats the destination as untrusted.

Fix crashes or “Folder Marker not working” on Windows 10 or 11

  1. Confirm that the computer is running one of the Windows releases listed by the vendor: Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11. The listed 4.9.1 package supports x32 and x64 systems.
  2. Record the exact symptom: missing context-menu entry, crash when applying an icon, unchanged local folder, network-only failure or icons disappearing after synchronization. Each points to a different branch of this guide.
  3. Install the current 4.9.1 release from the official source after removing a damaged older installation. Restart before testing.
  4. Test a newly created local folder. This avoids confusing an application problem with a stale icon cache, restricted permissions or untrusted desktop.ini data.
  5. Scan foldermarker.exe and the installer with Defender if the crash began after a download from an unexpected source.
  6. If Windows reports a blocked file or a security warning, resolve the trust issue for the specific trusted file instead of disabling protections globally.

If the process crashes only on a particular share or synchronized directory, preserve the local test result and provide the path type, Windows version, Folder Marker version and any error text to the software vendor or your administrator. Those details are more useful than repeatedly ending the process.

Choosing a download and edition

Choice What is established What to verify yourself
Official Folder Marker download Best provenance for the vendor’s installer and the listed 4.9.1 release Correct domain, expected file type, publisher and valid signature
Third-party download May redistribute an installer, but its chain of custody is not established by the filename Source reputation, download warnings, signature and Defender result before execution
Free edition Listed as part of the product family Exact features and current licensing terms are not stated here
Home edition Listed as part of the product family Exact features and current licensing terms are not stated here
Pro edition Version 4.9.1, 36.8 MB listed file size and $34.95 listed price at the October 18, 2026 check Whether the price or features have changed before purchase

Download-source choice matters more to safety than whether the file name looks familiar. If you did not intend to install Folder Marker, investigate why the executable exists before deciding that it is harmless.

When to treat the file as suspicious

  • The process runs from a temporary, browser-cache or unrelated application directory.
  • Properties show no expected publisher information, or the signature is invalid.
  • The executable arrived as an email attachment, pirated bundle or unsolicited download.
  • Defender reports a threat, or the file repeatedly returns after quarantine.
  • The icon resembles a folder but the file extension is hidden in Explorer.
  • Folder Marker is not installed, yet the process launches at sign-in or consumes resources continuously.

In these cases, do not open the file or use an online “fix” that asks you to whitelist it. Disconnecting from risky activity, quarantining the file with Defender and reviewing recent downloads are safer first actions.
