A copy installed with Fldigi, in the suite’s documented folder structure, is consistent with legitimate software. The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe, however. A copy in a temporary or unexpected folder, one downloaded separately, or one repeatedly detected by Microsoft Defender should be treated as untrusted until you verify its origin and scan it.
What is flarq.exe?
Flarq.exe is the Windows program file for Fast Light ARQ. It is distributed as part of Fldigi, a suite used for amateur-radio digital communications. Fldigi’s Windows build documentation lists fldigi.exe and flarq.exe as build outputs, and W1HKJ documentation lists flarq.exe with the other NBEMS applications.

The expected installation is normally a complete Fldigi package rather than a separately downloaded flarq.exe. The W1HKJ Flwrap manual describes a zipped Fldigi archive containing flwrap.exe, fldigi.exe and flarq.exe. Fldigi uninstall records also list flarq.exe beside the suite’s other executables. A portable installation may instead place the programs in the documented FL_APPS folder.
One executable-analysis record identifies the file description as “Fast Light ARQ Application,” gives the original filename as flarq.exe, reports product version 4.3.9, and includes GPLv3-or-later licensing metadata. Those details can help you compare a file with a known-good copy, but metadata is not a substitute for checking where the file came from and scanning it.

Is flarq.exe safe, or is it a virus?
There is no safe-or-malicious verdict based on the name alone. Malware can use a familiar filename, while a legitimate Fldigi executable can be flagged because of a damaged file, an unusual package, or a detection that requires review. Treat the file’s origin, location, publisher information and scan results as a set of evidence.

Microsoft’s guidance is conservative: quarantine moves a detected file to a safe location and blocks it from running, while an Allow action should be reserved for software whose publisher and origin you trust. If you cannot connect the file to a known Fldigi installation, keep it blocked and continue with the verification steps below.

Verify a copy before you run it
- Do not open an unknown copy. In File Explorer, note the complete path. Record whether it is under the Fldigi installation directory, in a documented portable
FL_APPSfolder, or somewhere unexpected such as a temporary or user-download directory. - Inspect the file’s properties. Right-click
flarq.exe, choose Properties, and review the Details tab. Compare the description, original filename and product version with the documented Fast Light ARQ metadata. If a Digital Signatures tab is present, inspect the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. An absent or unfamiliar signature is a reason to investigate, not an automatic malware verdict. - Identify the installation source. Look for the Fldigi program files and the suite’s normal uninstaller. A complete Fldigi archive that includes
fldigi.exeandflarq.exeis materially more credible than a lone executable copied from a download page. - Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence. Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, open Protection updates, and select Check for updates. Menu names can vary slightly by Windows release.
- Scan the file and its surroundings. In Virus & threat protection, open Scan options and run a Full scan. If you need to target the Fldigi directory, use Custom scan and select that folder. A scan of only the executable can miss a second file responsible for a recurring problem.
- Use Defender Offline when the problem persists. If detections return after removal, or suspicious software appears to start before Windows is fully loaded, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; the computer restarts and scans outside the normal Windows session.
- Review Protection history. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Read the detection name, affected path and action taken. Leave the item quarantined or removed unless you can independently establish that it came from your trusted Fldigi package.
Why does flarq.exe keep crashing or failing?
No single, documented flarq.exe error cause is established by the available project and Windows-security documentation. The exact message, path, Fldigi version and Defender result are needed to distinguish among several different situations.

A startup message that Windows cannot find flarq.exe can indicate an incomplete extraction, an interrupted installation, accidental deletion, or security software having quarantined the file. Check Protection history and the Fldigi folder before copying a replacement from elsewhere. A missing companion executable is best repaired by reinstalling the complete suite.

The file is damaged or the installation is inconsistent
A crash immediately after launch, or an error that began after an update or manual file replacement, can be consistent with a damaged executable or mismatched companion files. The available evidence does not identify a universal crash signature, so preserve the exact text and version rather than assuming a particular cause.
Defender or another security product blocked it
If the event appears in Protection history, Windows may have quarantined the file and prevented it from running. Do not bypass the block merely to see whether the program starts. First establish whether the file belongs to a known-good Fldigi package, then rescan the original package and review the detection details.

The executable is not the Fldigi copy you expected
A file with the right name in a temporary folder, a user-writable directory, or an unrelated application’s folder does not match the documented bundle layout. Repeated launches from such a location, especially after reboot, deserve an offline scan and further investigation rather than a repair attempt.

How to fix flarq.exe errors on Windows
1. Capture facts before changing files
- Copy the complete error text, including any error code or named path.
- Record the full path of the executable.
- Note the installed Fldigi version and whether the package is portable.
- Save the relevant Protection history entry, including detection name and action.
- Write down whether the failure occurs at Windows sign-in, when Fldigi starts, or only when you select a particular function.
These details prevent a legitimate installation problem from being confused with a suspicious standalone copy.
2. Remove or quarantine an untrusted copy
If flarq.exe was downloaded separately, came from an unknown mirror, or is running from an unexplained directory, do not attempt to repair it in place. Let Microsoft Defender quarantine or remove it, and do not choose Allow without establishing the publisher and origin. If the file returns after removal, disconnecting the computer from unnecessary networks while you collect detection details and running Defender Offline is prudent.
3. Repair a legitimate Fldigi installation by reinstalling the suite
- Close Fldigi and any related NBEMS applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on an older Windows release), find the affected Fldigi version, and use its normal uninstaller. If the package provides its own uninstaller, use that instead.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Obtain the complete Fldigi package from a trusted project distribution. Do not use a random “DLL fixer,” software mirror, or a standalone flarq.exe download.
- Install or extract the suite as directed by its package. The expected archive should restore the companion structure that includes
fldigi.exeandflarq.exe; the documented archive may also containflwrap.exe. - Before launching the repaired copy, scan the downloaded archive and the resulting installation folder with current Microsoft Defender security intelligence.
- Open the newly installed Fldigi program and confirm that the error no longer occurs. If you use a portable installation, verify that the programs are in the intended
FL_APPSfolder rather than a temporary extraction directory.
4. Handle a Defender detection after reinstalling
If a cleanly obtained Fldigi package still triggers a detection, do not repeatedly restore the file. Compare the detection path with the installation path, check Protection history for the exact action, and run a full scan followed by Defender Offline if the detection persists. An allow-list exception should be considered only after you have independently verified the package and understand the detection; the filename or a claim that the program is “needed” is not enough.
5. Diagnose a crash that remains after a clean reinstall
- Confirm that the error names the newly installed path, not an old copy left in another directory.
- Check the file’s Details and Digital Signatures tabs again and record the product version.
- Run another full scan and review Protection history for a second file being blocked.
- Test whether Fldigi itself starts while flarq.exe remains untouched. This helps separate a suite-wide installation problem from a problem isolated to the ARQ component, without replacing files from an unknown source.
- When seeking project support, provide the exact error text, Fldigi version, Windows version, complete path and Defender result. Do not upload or share a suspicious executable.
Known-good and suspicious copies: a practical comparison

No single row proves legitimacy. The most reliable conclusion comes from the combination of trusted package origin, expected path and bundle, consistent metadata, and current security scans.

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
- The file returns after Defender removes it.
- It launches from a temporary or user-writable folder.
- Multiple detections appear, or the detection remains after a full scan.
- You cannot determine which Fldigi installation created the file.
- The exact error changes after each attempted repair.
In these cases, preserve the detection and error details, run Microsoft Defender Offline, and seek help from a qualified Windows or Fldigi support channel. Do not send a suspicious executable to other people or add a broad exclusion simply to suppress the alert.

Flarq.exe is normally the Fast Light ARQ component bundled with Fldigi, not inherently a virus. Verify its path and package origin, inspect its properties, update and run Microsoft Defender scans, and leave unexplained detections quarantined. For a legitimate but missing or damaged copy, uninstall the affected Fldigi installation and reinstall the complete suite from a trusted distribution. A recurring detection or a copy that runs outside the expected Fldigi structure warrants Defender Offline and further investigation, not an automatic allow rule.
