fileinfo.exe is not one uniquely defined Windows component. Different third-party utilities and device programs have used that filename, so the name alone cannot tell you whether a copy is legitimate or malicious. Check its full path, owning application, publisher, digital signature, hash, origin and a current Microsoft Defender scan before opening, deleting or replacing it. If a trusted program reports that the file is missing or damaged, repair that parent program instead of downloading a replacement executable from an untrusted site.
The short answer
There is no single, standard Windows file called fileinfo.exe whose identity can be inferred from the filename. A SourceForge project describes a FileInfo.exe utility that identifies file types and their associated programs; its project page says the file was registered in 2012 and last updated in 2013. A separate historical Softpedia listing describes a portable command-line FileInfo utility that reports file type, attributes, timestamps, size and other metadata. Those are unrelated third-party programs.

Printer software is another example. A FileInfo.EXE record in Star Micronics directories is attributed to STAR MICRONICS CO.,LTD.; that particular record says the binary was signed and verified and had zero detections in a scan reported in September 2026. That result applies only to that specific sample. It does not certify every executable with the same name.
Windows treats executable files such as .exe as potentially dangerous when deciding whether to show shell or download warnings. Attachment Manager records where a downloaded file came from, including Mark of the Web information, and can warn or block files from untrusted locations. Safety therefore depends on the individual file’s context, not its spelling.

What fileinfo.exe may be on your PC
File-information utilities
Some FileInfo programs are small tools for identifying file types, associations and metadata. They may be portable and may not install a conventional Windows service. A utility obtained years ago can remain on a drive even after its publisher has stopped updating it.
Device or application components
Software bundled with a printer or another application can include its own FileInfo.EXE. A copy under a vendor’s installation directory, signed by that vendor and launched by its program, is materially different from an unsigned copy in a temporary folder.
A suspicious look-alike
Malware can choose an ordinary filename to blend in. A fileinfo.exe in %TEMP%, a browser-download directory, a random folder under a user profile or a misspelled vendor directory deserves extra scrutiny, especially if it starts automatically or has no recognizable publisher. Location is a warning sign, not proof; legitimate portable tools can also live outside Program Files.

You cannot answer that question from the filename alone. Assess the copy you actually have using all of these signals:

- Full path and owner: identify the application or device package that installed it.
- Publisher and signature: a valid signature whose certificate chain matches the installed product is stronger evidence than a filename or icon.
- Version and hash: record them before comparing with a vendor’s known release or another trusted machine.
- Provenance: determine whether it arrived through an official installer, email, messaging app, browser download or an unknown archive.
- Security scan: use current Microsoft Defender security intelligence and, when appropriate, a full or offline scan.
- Behavior: unexpected persistence, network activity, repeated crashes or launches from a temporary directory increase concern.
A signed Star Micronics copy in a Star Micronics printer directory and an unsigned copy in a temporary download directory should not be treated as equivalent. Conversely, an unsigned portable utility is not automatically malware; it simply lacks one useful trust signal.
How to inspect the file without launching it
1. Record the complete path
- If an error dialog names the file, copy the path or use its details option. Do not double-click the executable.
- For a running process, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select the process, choose Open file location, and note the directory. If the process is not running, search File Explorer for
fileinfo.exe; enable View > Show > File name extensions so a deceptive name is easier to spot. - Write down the parent product suggested by the folder, shortcut or error message. A vendor directory such as a printer suite’s installation folder is more informative than a generic filename.
2. Read Properties and the signature
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and record the General tab’s location and size.
- On Details, note File description, Product name, Company, File version and Original filename. Empty or contradictory fields are reasons to investigate further, not automatic proof of infection.
- On Digital Signatures, select a signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. Inspect the signer and certificate chain and compare the publisher with the application you installed. A valid signature proves who signed that particular file; it does not prove that the program is useful or that every copy with that name is safe.
3. Check the hash and signature in PowerShell
Open PowerShell without running the executable and substitute the real path:
Get-FileHash "C:Pathfileinfo.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:Pathfileinfo.exe" | Format-List Status,SignerCertificateSave the SHA-256 value, signature status and signer. Compare them only with a hash or release record from the software maker or an installer you obtained through its official channel. A different hash can simply mean a different version; it is not, by itself, a malware verdict.

- Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender if that command is available.
- Update Defender security intelligence in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates.
- When you need broader coverage, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and run Full scan. If you suspect persistence or a process that restarts before Windows fully loads, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan; save work first because Windows restarts.
- PowerShell administrators can start a full scan with
Start-MpScan -ScanType FullScan. The scan can take considerable time on a large disk.
If Defender identifies malware, allow it to quarantine the item and follow the remediation result. Do not create an exclusion merely to silence an alert: Microsoft warns that exclusions stop real-time checking for the excluded item and can leave the device exposed.

5. Check download blocking information
If the file came from a browser, email or messaging application, right-click it, open Properties and look for a Security message or an Unblock checkbox. This is Attachment Manager’s record of the file’s origin. Verify the source first. Do not unblock an unknown executable simply because it will not open while blocked.
Can you delete fileinfo.exe?
Deleting the file before identifying its owner can break a printer utility or another application, and deleting a suspicious file without scanning can remove evidence needed for investigation. Use this decision guide:

After uninstalling a parent program and confirming that no other application needs the file, you can delete a leftover copy and empty the Recycle Bin. If Windows says the file is in use, restart and repeat the check; do not force deletion merely to clear an error message.
Why fileinfo.exe errors happen
Missing or quarantined component
An uninstall, failed update, disk cleanup or security quarantine can remove a file while shortcuts or services still reference it. The error may say that fileinfo.exe was not found or cannot start.

Corruption or an incomplete update
A damaged executable, interrupted installer or disk error can produce “bad image,” invalid-format or application-error messages. The version may no longer match its supporting DLLs.
Wrong file or incompatible build
Replacing a file with one from another product, architecture or release can cause entry-point and side-by-side errors. A 32-bit utility and a 64-bit dependency are not interchangeable simply because both are called FileInfo.
Blocked or untrusted download
Attachment Manager may prevent an executable from running when its origin is considered untrusted. This is a security decision, not evidence that the file is damaged.
Malware or unwanted persistence
A malicious copy may start from a Run key, scheduled task or service and repeatedly fail, disappear after quarantine or recreate itself. Repeated alerts, unexpected network connections and a random launch path warrant an offline scan.
Windows or storage problems
Damaged system components, filesystem errors, failing storage or insufficient permissions can prevent a legitimate application from loading even when its own file is intact.

1. Identify and repair the parent application
- Use the path, Properties metadata and the error’s program name to identify the owner.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find that product, select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options > Repair when Windows provides it. This normally preserves user data. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, use Reset only after checking what data it removes.
- For traditional desktop software, run its official installer and choose Repair, or uninstall, restart and reinstall the current release from the publisher’s official site. Do not use a standalone fileinfo.exe download.
- For printer software, install the package intended for the exact printer model and your Windows edition. Disconnecting and reconnecting the printer after installation can force the application to rebuild its components.
2. Update Windows and the application
Install pending updates through Settings > Windows Update, restart, then update the owning application. An application built for an older Windows release may need a newer vendor version rather than a copied executable.
3. Remove a confirmed malicious copy safely
- Let Defender quarantine the detected item and record the detection name and affected path.
- Run a Full scan. If the file or its launcher returns, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and remove related scheduled tasks or startup entries only when you can identify them confidently.
- Change important passwords from a known-clean device if the scan indicates credential-stealing malware. Do not restore the quarantined file from a backup unless you have verified that backup.
4. Repair Windows component files
Use these commands in an elevated Command Prompt when the error affects several programs or Windows reports broader corruption. Run them in order and wait for each one to finish:

sfc /scannowRestart after both commands. DISM repairs the component store that System File Checker uses; SFC then replaces damaged protected Windows files. These commands will not recreate a third-party program’s private fileinfo.exe, so continue with the parent-application repair if the error is product-specific.
5. Check permissions and compatibility
- Right-click the owning application’s shortcut, choose Properties > Compatibility, and use Run compatibility troubleshooter when the program is old. Avoid permanently enabling compatibility modes until you have tested normally.
- If the error is “Access denied,” confirm that your account can read and execute the parent folder and that security software has not quarantined a dependency. Do not grant broad permissions to an unknown executable.
- Use Run as administrator only for a trusted installer or repair tool that genuinely requires elevation. Elevation does not make an unsafe file safe.
6. Test for startup conflicts
When fileinfo.exe fails only during boot or login, perform a clean boot: open System Configuration (msconfig), on Services select Hide all Microsoft services, disable the remaining non-Microsoft services, and disable nonessential startup apps in Task Manager. Restart and test. Re-enable items in groups to identify the conflicting program, then return Windows to normal startup after testing.
7. Use logs to capture the failing module
Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and filter around the failure time. Look for the application name, faulting module, exception code and path. A faulting module that belongs to the parent product points to that product’s repair process; a random module or repeated access violation may indicate a wider software or hardware problem.
8. Restore a known-good state
If the problem began immediately after an installation or update, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back when that option is available, or run System Restore from the recovery tools and select a restore point dated before the change. Back up personal files first. System Restore does not replace a malware investigation and may not affect files stored outside its restore scope.

- “fileinfo.exe not found” at startup: identify the disabled or uninstalled parent program in Task Manager’s Startup apps and repair or uninstall that product rather than downloading the file.
- “Bad image” or missing DLL: reinstall the exact parent application, then run DISM and SFC if multiple programs show similar errors.
- Windows blocks the file: verify its source and signature; leave it blocked if you cannot establish trust.
- Repeated Defender detections: quarantine, run Full and Offline scans as appropriate, and investigate startup persistence.
- High CPU or repeated crashes: check the executable’s path and parent process, capture Event Viewer details, and test a clean boot before changing permissions.
How to verify that the repair worked
- Restart Windows and confirm that the original error no longer appears at login or when the parent application opens.
- Open the parent application and exercise the feature that previously failed, such as printing or viewing file metadata.
- Recheck the executable’s path, version and signature after reinstalling; an official installer may legitimately replace the hash.
- Run a fresh Defender scan and review Protection history for unresolved items.
- Keep the installer source, version and date in your notes so a future error can be compared with a known-good state.
