There is no evidence that file-psd-save.exe is a Windows system file. EchoTrail recorded only four endpoint executions and ranked the name 8,100th among programs in its dataset when the page was accessed on October 16, 2026. The observed copies were in C:Program FilesGIMP 2libgimp2.0plug-ins and were generally launched by gimp-2.8.exe. ProcessLibrary also associates the name with a GIMP plug-in and a Total Commander Ultima Prime context. These are process-database observations, not a guarantee for a file on your computer.
One separate 54 KB sample, MD5 f0adfc69a38f948483ca410ac5930a6c, was last analyzed on August 2, 2024 and labeled Risk.NetCat by ThreatInfo/GridinSoft. That record lists GIMP-related Program Files paths and attributes a valid signature to Jernej Simoncic. A valid signature, a familiar filename or a GIMP-looking path is not sufficient by itself: malware can be renamed, copied into a trusted-looking folder, or bundled with an altered installer.

The practical verdict is conditional. A copy installed with a known GIMP package, launched only while GIMP is working, signed consistently with the package and cleared by a current scan may be a plug-in. A copy that arrived unexpectedly, runs at startup, produces repeated security alerts, makes unexplained network connections or sits outside the GIMP plug-in directory needs malware triage before you open it or allow elevation.

None of these checks is conclusive alone. Use the combination of path, provenance, identity, behavior and a current scan to decide what to do next.
Why is file-psd-save.exe running?
If the file is in the GIMP plug-in directory, GIMP may load it as part of its plug-in system while opening, editing or exporting images. The observed telemetry most often shows gimp-2.8.exe as the parent process, so an installation using that executable can explain a temporary appearance in Task Manager.

If GIMP is not installed, the process appears before GIMP starts, or it remains active after GIMP closes, investigate further. A renamed executable can use a plausible image-editing name to avoid attention. The name itself does not tell you whether it is a plug-in, a damaged file, a potentially unwanted program or malware.
In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the full path before ending the process. Do not double-click the file, approve an elevation prompt or add a security exclusion merely because an application reports that it needs the executable.
Safety triage: verify the file before running it
- Do not launch an unexpected copy. If the file came from an attachment, download, temporary folder or unknown software bundle, leave it closed. Do not approve a User Account Control prompt for it.
- Inspect the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click the file, select Properties and note the location, size, creation date and downloaded-from context. Compare the path with the known GIMP plug-in directory. A path outside the installation deserves extra scrutiny.
- Review the digital signature. On the Digital Signatures tab, check the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. Also inspect the General tab for a security block indicating that the file came from another computer. A valid signature supports provenance but does not prove that the current copy is safe.
- Check the file type and metadata. Confirm that the item is actually an executable, not a document with a misleading extension. Compare its size and timestamps with the rest of the GIMP installation. The 54 KB ThreatInfo sample is one historical record, not a universal expected size.
- Scan the individual file. Right-click it, choose Show more options > Scan with Microsoft Defender, and wait for the result. Microsoft documents this context-menu procedure for scanning a specific file or folder.
- Update security intelligence and run a full scan. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates, check for updates, then choose Scan options > Full scan. Keep the file quarantined if Defender or another reputable scanner detects it.
- Escalate persistent detections. If the detection returns after removal, or other signs of persistence appear, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts and scans outside the normal desktop, which makes it harder for hidden malware to defend itself while Windows is running.
- Do not create an exclusion to silence the warning. An exclusion stops real-time checking for the excluded item and can expose the device and its data. Only consider an exclusion after you have independently established that a file is trusted, and do not use one as a substitute for investigation.
What to do when a scanner quarantines the file
Leave the item in quarantine while you identify the parent application and any persistence mechanism. Do not restore it simply because GIMP stops launching. First determine whether GIMP itself is damaged or whether the executable came from an untrusted package.

If the file belongs to a known GIMP installation
Record the GIMP version and installation path, then uninstall that installation through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions). Restart Windows, scan again, and reinstall GIMP only from its official distribution channel. Avoid copying the quarantined executable back into the new installation. If the new installation generates the same detection, stop and investigate the installer rather than repeatedly restoring the file.
If the file is unrelated to GIMP
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to remove the program that placed it there, if you can identify one. Review Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps list for an entry that points to the same path; disable an unknown entry only after recording its name and location. Check browser downloads, email attachments and recently installed bundles for the source. A recurring detection after a restart is a reason to run Defender Offline and seek professional incident-response help rather than repeatedly deleting copies.
Do not confuse the executable with PSD or PSB save errors
Many searches for this filename actually describe a Photoshop document that will not open or save. Adobe documents errors including “Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document” and “Could not save as [filename].psd because of a program error.” Those messages concern the PSD/PSB file or the Photoshop environment; deleting an executable named file-psd-save.exe is not a general fix.

Adobe identifies several possible causes for PSD and PSB failures: file corruption, a mismatched extension, graphics-card problems, storage or hardware faults, and wider software conflicts. Treat the original document as evidence that can be damaged further: work from a duplicate or backup, and save recovered material under a new name.
Step-by-step fixes for a PSD or PSB that will not open
- Preserve the original. Copy the PSD or PSB to another local folder or an external backup before attempting recovery. Work on the copy so that a failed repair does not overwrite the only version.
- Confirm the extension. In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions. Verify that the file really ends in
.psdor.psb. Correct only an obvious, accidental rename; do not change an unknown file’s extension to force Photoshop to open it. - Check whether the file is incomplete. Compare its size with a known backup and consider whether a download, copy or network transfer was interrupted. A truncated file may not be recoverable by changing its name.
- Use Photoshop’s documented recovery and composite-opening procedures. Adobe’s recovery guidance can sometimes open a flattened composite even when individual layers are damaged. Save any recovered result as a new file and retain the original copy for further attempts.
- Move the work to reliable storage. Save to a local NTFS drive or Creative Cloud rather than directly to a network share. Adobe notes that network locations are more vulnerable during saves because connectivity and write operations can be interrupted.
- Check free space. Photoshop needs room for the document and its temporary working data. Clear enough space on the destination and the drive used for scratch data, then retry with a new filename.
- Test recently changed components. If several unrelated documents fail, review recently installed software, graphics drivers, storage health and Windows changes. A pattern across files points more strongly to the application or hardware than to one corrupt document.
- Configure automatic recovery for future work. In Photoshop, open Edit > Preferences > File Handling on Windows and enable automatic recovery information. Adobe documents five- or 10-minute intervals; choose one and confirm the setting so a later crash leaves a more recent recovery point.

- Run a new individual scan and then a full scan with current Defender security intelligence.
- Check the original path and any startup entry for recreated copies.
