ExpressVPNNotificationService.exe is normally the notification-service component installed with the ExpressVPN Windows application, not a Windows system process. Its name alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. Check its location, verify the ExpressVPN publisher signature, scan uncertain files with updated Microsoft Defender, and then repair the installation with a compatible update, service restart, or clean reinstall.
What ExpressVPNNotificationService.exe does
ExpressVPNNotificationService.exe belongs to the ExpressVPN Notifications component used by the Windows client. It supports communication between parts of the desktop application and its notification features. It is third-party software, not an executable supplied by the Windows operating system.

That path is an example, not a rule. The exact folder can differ between ExpressVPN app generations, 32-bit and 64-bit installations, and custom installation choices. A copy in an ExpressVPN program folder is more plausible than an identically named file in a Windows system folder, a temporary directory, or a random user-profile folder.
The process can remain active when the main ExpressVPN window is closed because Windows services and background components can continue running independently of the visible user interface. Its presence by itself is therefore not proof of a problem. Repeated crashes, a service that cannot start, high resource use, or a file with suspicious provenance require investigation.
How to tell whether the file is legitimate
Use several checks together. A filename can be copied by malware, while a path or signature can change after a legitimate update.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find ExpressVPNNotificationService.exe under the Processes or Details tab.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Compare the folder with the ExpressVPN installation directory you expect.
A file in C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a user temp folder, or another unrelated location deserves extra scrutiny. Location is evidence, not a verdict: a legitimate installation can use a different directory, and malware can be placed in a convincing one.

2. Verify the digital signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the listed signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
- Check that the signer is Expressco Services LLC, the publisher identified in ExpressVPN’s installer guidance.
An absent, invalid, or unrelated signature does not automatically establish malware, but it means you should not trust the file until its origin is explained. Do not replace it with an executable downloaded from an unofficial “DLL” or “EXE fix” site.
3. Confirm the download source
ExpressVPN advises downloading its Windows application from the company’s own website and checking the installer’s Digital Signatures tab. If you obtained the program from a repack, file-sharing page, or an unknown software bundle, uninstall that copy and obtain a fresh installer from the official source instead.
4. Scan when provenance is uncertain
Update Microsoft Defender, then run a scan on the file or its containing folder. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, install available protection-intelligence updates, and choose a scan option. A full scan is appropriate when the file is in an unexpected location or other suspicious symptoms are present.

One FreeFixer record examined a particular file and reported a valid signature with no detections from 71 VirusTotal engines. That result applies only to that sampled file and version; it cannot certify every executable carrying the same name.

What security history means for current installations
F-Secure Consulting’s assessment states that the ExpressVPN Notifications Service ran without elevated privileges and created a named pipe for inter-process communication. The same 2022 assessment described insecure .NET deserialization in the assessed application and reported that serialized data sent through the named pipes could lead to local arbitrary code execution.
This is historical, version-specific evidence from an assessment published in 2022. It should not be read as proof that every current release has the same weakness. The practical response is to keep the ExpressVPN application and Windows fully updated, avoid untrusted installers, and investigate any file whose path or signature does not match the expected provenance.
Choose the response that matches the symptom

How to fix ExpressVPNNotificationService.exe errors
Step 1: Check your Windows version and app compatibility
ExpressVPN’s current installer guidance says the latest app requires Windows 10 or later. Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 require an older supported ExpressVPN build instead of the newest package. Running an installer that does not match your Windows version can produce service-start failures, setup errors, or an application that installs incompletely.

- Confirm whether the computer is running Windows 10 or 11, or an older release.
- Use the ExpressVPN installer intended for that release. Do not force the newest package onto an unsupported version of Windows.
If the operating system itself is out of support, upgrading Windows may be the durable solution. Do not attempt to solve an incompatibility by copying service files from another computer.

Step 2: Relaunch the client, install pending Windows updates, and update ExpressVPN
Temporary service-registration failures can clear after a complete restart. Close the ExpressVPN window, restart Windows, and open the app again. Then check Settings > Windows Update and install applicable updates, restarting when Windows requests it.
Download the latest compatible ExpressVPN installer from the official source. Close ExpressVPN before running setup. If the installer offers a repair or update option, use it; otherwise allow it to replace the existing compatible installation. A fresh, properly matched package can restore missing service files and registrations without changing unrelated Windows components.
If the error returns immediately after updating, record the exact wording and whether it appears during startup, connection, or shutdown. “Engine Unavailable,” “Service Unreachable,” and “Unable to Start Service” point to the background service path and are useful when choosing the next step.

- Press Windows key+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services console, locate the ExpressVPN service. The display name can vary by app generation.
- Right-click the service and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
- Open ExpressVPN again and test the action that produced the error.
If Windows refuses to start the service, note the exact error shown in the service dialog. A missing executable, permission problem, blocked dependency, or damaged installation may require the reinstall checks below. Do not delete service entries manually; doing so can leave the client in a harder-to-repair state.

Step 4: Resolve installation blockers
When setup fails, work through the environment rather than repeatedly launching the same installer.
- Permissions: Sign in with an account permitted to install desktop software. If your organization manages the PC, an administrator may need to approve the installation.
- Security software: Antivirus or endpoint protection can block a service registration or quarantine a file. Review its event history and allow only a verified installer from the official ExpressVPN source. Do not disable protection permanently; if a temporary test is necessary, restore protection immediately afterward.
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable: ExpressVPN identifies required Microsoft Visual C++ components as a possible installation dependency. Repair or install the supported redistributable through Microsoft’s official package rather than downloading DLL files individually.
- Corrupted installer records: If Windows believes an older ExpressVPN installation is still present and will not remove or update it, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. It is intended to repair damaged uninstall or installation records.
- Disk and restart state: Close other installers, reboot Windows, and retry with adequate free space. A pending reboot can prevent a service from being replaced cleanly.
After correcting one blocker, run the current compatible installer again. If it fails at the same point, save the displayed error rather than repeatedly removing random files from the ExpressVPN directory.
Step 5: Perform a clean reinstall when updating is not enough
A clean reinstall is appropriate when the service is present but repeatedly crashes, the application files are incomplete, or an update leaves the same startup error.
- Back up any information you need from the ExpressVPN installation, then close the app.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and uninstall ExpressVPN. On older editions, use Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
- Restart Windows after removal.
- Check the former installation directory. Do not delete unrelated files; remove only verified ExpressVPN remnants if the uninstaller leaves them and you understand what they are.
- Download a fresh installer that matches your Windows release and run it with the required permissions.
- Restart Windows once more, open the client, and test the service.
If the executable that remains after uninstalling is unsigned, detected, or stored outside the expected ExpressVPN folders, treat it as a separate file to investigate. Do not assume that every leftover file is a legitimate component merely because ExpressVPN was previously installed.
Step 6: Collect logs and contact ExpressVPN Support
When the crash persists after a compatible update, service restart, and clean reinstall, gather the ExpressVPN installer and application logs described in the vendor’s support guidance. Include the Windows version, ExpressVPN version, exact error text, the executable’s full path, signature result, and the steps that reproduce the failure.
Logs are more useful than a general statement that the file “stopped working.” Preserve the original files until support has reviewed them, and do not email an executable obtained from an untrusted source. If a security product quarantined the file, provide its detection name and timestamp instead of restoring it blindly.
Step 7: Remove ExpressVPN if you no longer use it
Uninstall ExpressVPN through Windows Apps or Programs, restart the computer, update Microsoft Defender, and run a scan. Check Task Manager and the former installation directory afterward. Any remaining copy should be traced to a legitimate installation path and signature; an unrelated leftover deserves separate investigation.
