What Is examine.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix examine.exe Errors on Windows

examine.exe is not a standard Windows component with one authoritative owner. The filename is used by legitimate programs such as Examine64 Text Search, Examine32 Text Search and ChinarSoft Examine, but malware can copy the same name. Do not judge it by the filename alone: first identify the full path, publisher, digital signature, provenance, file hash and Microsoft Defender result.

This guide shows how to identify the file, assess whether it belongs to software you intended to install, scan or remove a suspicious copy, and repair common startup, missing-file and application-error situations without downloading a replacement executable from an unknown site.

What examine.exe is

Windows does not require a canonical system file named examine.exe. It is a reused executable name. Different vendors have used it for unrelated products, so two files with identical capitalization can have completely different owners and behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented legitimate examples include Examine64 Text Search, whose command-line manual shows installations beneath a directory such as C:Program FilesExamine64 Text Search ...; Examine32 Text Search, associated with Aquila Software; and ChinarSoft Examine 1.0.0, which commonly installs under C:Program Files (x86)ChinarSoftExamine and includes ExamineUpdater.exe. A separate malware-analysis report also examined a file named Examine.exe. The engines used in that one analysis marked that sample clean, but the result applies only to that exact analyzed hash, not to every file with the same name.

Therefore, “Is examine.exe a virus?” has no filename-only answer. A file in an expected vendor directory, signed by that vendor and installed when you deliberately installed the associated program is a different case from an unsigned copy launching from a temporary or user-profile folder.

Why the filename cannot prove that it is safe

  • Names are easy to copy. Malicious software can use a familiar name to look routine. Exact capitalization, a Windows-style spelling or the presence of an .exe extension does not establish ownership.
  • Location provides context, not proof. A Program Files path is reassuring only when it matches software you recognize; a file in Downloads, Temp, AppData or another unexpected directory deserves closer review, but location alone does not prove malware.
  • A clean scan is specific to the scanned object. A result for one hash or one moment does not authenticate another copy that happens to be called examine.exe. A file can also change after an update or replacement.
  • Missing signatures are a warning, not a verdict. Some legitimate utilities may be unsigned, while a valid-looking signature can still belong to software you did not intend to install. Always compare the signer with the product you knowingly installed.

Identify the exact file before changing anything

Use these steps while the process is running. If it is not running, locate every copy with File Explorer search and inspect each one separately. Several unrelated programs can leave copies in different directories, and a startup error may point to a stale copy rather than the program you use today.

  1. Record the path. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Details, find examine.exe (or Examine.exe), right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path and note the exact capitalization. If Task Manager closes the process before you can inspect it, search the path shown in any alert or startup entry instead.
  2. Check whether there are multiple copies. Search all local drives for the filename, then record each full path. Do not assume the first result is the process that generated the warning. A known search program and an unrelated startup entry can legitimately or maliciously use the same name.
  3. Read the file metadata. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and review Details for Product name, File description, Company and File version. A product name that matches software you installed is useful context; generic or blank metadata warrants more checking. Record the version before uninstalling or replacing anything.
  4. Check the digital signature. Open the Digital Signatures tab, select the signer and choose Details to verify that Windows reports the signature as valid. Compare the signer with the publisher of the application you intended to install. If the tab is absent, do not treat that fact alone as proof of malicious code; use the path, provenance and scan results with it.
  5. Establish provenance. Ask when and why the file appeared. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10) for a matching product. A program you do not recognize, an unexpected updater or an installation you cannot explain should be treated cautiously. Look for the original installer or vendor account that supplied the application rather than relying on the filename.
  6. Calculate a hash when possible. In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathexamine.exe", replacing the quoted path with the one you recorded. Compare the resulting SHA-256 value with a hash published by the known software vendor, if one is available. A matching hash is strong evidence that the file is the vendor’s published build; an unmatched or unavailable vendor hash leaves the other checks important. Keep the hash with your notes if you need help from the vendor or a technician.
  7. Record the launching context. Note whether the process started with a search job, an updater, a login or a scheduled event. A process that runs only when you open an identified utility is different from one that launches at every boot with no visible parent application.

Product or sample Documented identity Path or evidence How to interpret it
Examine64 Text Search Examine64 The vendor manual documents examine.exe; example installations are under C:Program FilesExamine64 Text Search .... A plausible location when you intentionally installed Examine64 Text Search and the metadata or signature agrees.
Examine32 Text Search Aquila Software Associated with Examine32 Text Search; a specific installation path is not established here. Verify the installed product and signer rather than assuming every Examine32-named file is authentic.
ChinarSoft Examine 1.0.0 ChinarSoft Commonly under C:Program Files (x86)ChinarSoftExamine, alongside ExamineUpdater.exe. A matching directory and updater can explain a startup process if you installed this product.
Unrelated analyzed sample Not established as one of the products above A malware-analysis report covered one Examine.exe hash and recorded executable capabilities and indicators. The engines’ clean result applies only to that hash; it cannot certify another file.

If two legitimate-looking candidates appear, compare them by publisher and signature, installation path, product and version metadata, installation source, update mechanism, expected behavior and Defender result. The shorter or more familiar path is not automatically the genuine one.

How to decide whether your copy is safe

Use the following comparison rather than relying on a single clue. Treat the evidence as a set: a known path with an unrelated signer is not reassuring, and a valid signature in an unexpected location still deserves an explanation.

Check More reassuring Needs investigation
Publisher and signature Valid signature and publisher match the application you chose. Unsigned, invalid or unrelated signer.
Installation path Expected vendor directory under Program Files or the product’s documented folder. Temporary, Downloads, an unfamiliar AppData subfolder or a system directory that the product does not use.
Product and version Details tab identifies the installed product and a plausible version. Blank, misleading or inconsistent metadata.
Source You installed or updated the program from its official vendor site. You cannot recall installing it, or it arrived bundled with another download.
Behavior It runs only when the associated search utility or updater is used. It launches at every boot without a known parent application, creates unexplained network or file activity, or keeps returning after removal.
Defender result Microsoft Defender scans the file without a detection and the other evidence agrees. Defender reports malware or a potentially unwanted application (PUA), or the alert returns after removal.

Do not whitelist or execute a file solely because its name looks familiar. Microsoft warns that malware can pretend to be something it is not and recommends obtaining software from the official vendor’s website. If you did not choose the program, do not treat an installer bundle or an unexpected updater as proof of consent.

Scan and remove a suspicious examine.exe

  1. Update security intelligence. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and select Protection updates > Check for updates. Let the update finish before scanning so the scan uses current security intelligence.
  2. Run a Full scan. In Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and choose Scan now. Keep the computer powered on until the scan completes. A quick scan is not the escalation step described here when the file keeps returning.
  3. Review the result. Open Protection history. For a confirmed detection, choose the available Quarantine or Remove action and follow Windows Security’s prompts. Do not restore the file merely because the filename resembles a legitimate utility. Record the detection name and affected path before clearing the history.
  4. Escalate persistent detections. If the alert returns, or you suspect that the file starts before normal Windows services, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan > Scan now. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans before normal Windows loads. Save open work first and let the restart and scan finish.
  5. Uninstall unwanted software. If the file belongs to an application you do not want, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on Windows 10), select the matching application and choose Uninstall. Restart, then run another scan. If the software is legitimate and wanted, repair or reinstall it from the publisher instead of deleting its executable manually.
  6. Preserve evidence when compromise is possible. Keep the full path, SHA-256 hash, signature details and Protection history entry. This information helps a vendor or technician distinguish an unwanted application from a damaged legitimate installation without requiring you to circulate the executable.

Microsoft recommends leaving potentially unwanted-app protection enabled and enabling both app and download blocking. Do not disable those protections to make an unexplained alert disappear. An exclusion is not a repair: it changes what real-time scanning checks and can hide a continuing problem.

Fix examine.exe errors by symptom

“examine.exe application error” for a known program

  1. Write down the complete message and any hexadecimal error code. Note whether it appears when launching the search utility, during an update or at Windows startup. The timing identifies whether the parent is the main program, an updater or a stale startup reference.
  2. Confirm the path and publisher using the identification steps above. This prevents repairing the wrong program when several copies exist.
  3. Use the application’s own repair option if its uninstaller provides one, or uninstall it from Windows Settings and restart. Avoid deleting only the EXE, because shortcuts, uninstall information and scheduled tasks can remain.
  4. Download a current build only from the software publisher you have identified, then reinstall it. Do not obtain a replacement executable or DLL from a generic EXE/DLL download site; the file may be modified, incompatible or bundled with unwanted software.
  5. Run a Defender scan after reinstalling if the original error was accompanied by a security warning, unexpected startup behavior or a changed file location.

Windows Security reports malware or a PUA

Allow Windows Security to quarantine or remove the detection, complete a Full scan and use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection persists. Do not add an exclusion simply to suppress the alert. Microsoft states that an exclusion stops real-time scanning of the excluded file or process, which can leave the device exposed. If the alert identifies an application you intentionally installed, verify the publisher and contact that publisher rather than restoring the file blindly.

The file is missing after you uninstalled a program

A missing-file message often means that a shortcut, startup entry or scheduled task still points to an application that is no longer installed. First identify the parent program from the message or path. If you no longer want that program, remove the stale reference; reinstall only when you actually need the application. If the message names a task or service, inspect that entry before deleting anything so you do not remove a reference belonging to another product with the same filename.

The error appears at every startup but no parent program is known

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect entries whose command or file location points to examine.exe. Disable only an entry you can attribute to an unwanted or uninstalled program. Disabling an unexplained entry is not the same as proving the file is malicious.
  2. Open Task Scheduler by pressing Win+R, entering taskschd.msc, and reviewing the Task Scheduler Library. Check each suspicious task’s Actions tab for the full executable path and its Triggers tab for the condition that launches it. Record the task name and path before removing a task.
  3. Open the Services console with Win+R, enter services.msc, and inspect services whose executable path names the file. Do not stop or delete a service unless you can identify the software that created it.
  4. Use Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the time of the error. The event details can reveal the launching path, product name or faulting module.
  5. If the evidence points to malware, preserve the path, hash and Defender detection details before making extensive changes, then complete the Full and Offline scans described above.

“Why does examine.exe keep running?”

A legitimate text-search program may remain active while its interface or command-line job is open. ChinarSoft Examine may also have an updater named ExamineUpdater.exe. If the process returns after you end it, find the launch source in Startup apps, Task Scheduler or Services and compare it with the installed product. Repeated launches from an unexplained directory, especially after quarantine, are a reason to investigate rather than repeatedly terminate the process. Ending the process alone does not remove the startup mechanism that launches it.

What not to do

  • Do not assume that a familiar spelling or capitalization makes the file a Windows component.
  • Do not download a substitute examine.exe or a DLL from an unaffiliated file repository.
  • Do not add a Defender exclusion to silence an unexplained alert. Exclusions remove that file or process from real-time checking.
  • Do not delete a file from Program Files before checking which installed application owns it; manual deletion can leave broken uninstallers, shortcuts or scheduled tasks.
  • Do not treat one online scan result, one digital-signature check or one path as conclusive in isolation.
  • Do not restore a quarantined file merely because a similarly named product is legitimate. Confirm the hash, publisher and installation history for the exact object.

When to seek additional help

Escalate to the software vendor or a qualified technician when the file has an invalid signature, an unknown origin, recurring Defender detections, unexplained persistence or symptoms affecting other accounts and applications. Provide the exact path, SHA-256 hash, publisher and version, the complete error text, Protection history details and the steps that reproduce the problem. Those details distinguish a damaged installation from a potentially compromised system without requiring you to circulate the executable itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is examine.exe a Windows system file?

No. examine.exe is a reused filename, not a canonical Windows component. Legitimate copies are associated with products such as Examine64 Text Search, Examine32 Text Search and ChinarSoft Examine, but an unrelated or malicious program can use the same name.

Is examine.exe a virus?

The filename alone cannot answer that. Check the exact path, publisher, digital signature, installation source, SHA-256 hash and Microsoft Defender result. An unexplained copy in a temporary or user-profile directory needs more scrutiny than a matching, signed file in a product’s documented folder.

Why does examine.exe keep running?

It may be a legitimate search process or ChinarSoft’s updater, but repeated launches can also come from Startup apps, Task Scheduler or Services. Identify the launching path and compare it with installed software instead of repeatedly ending the process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove examine.exe?

First determine which application owns the exact file. For a Defender detection, use Quarantine or Remove, run a Full scan and use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection returns. For unwanted software, uninstall the parent application through Windows Settings; do not manually delete an EXE before checking its owner.

How do I fix an examine.exe application error?

Record the full message and path, verify the publisher, then repair or uninstall and reinstall the identified application from its official vendor. Do not download a replacement EXE or DLL from a generic file site. Scan afterward if the error included a security warning or unexplained startup behavior.

What if examine.exe is missing from Windows?

A missing-file message commonly comes from a leftover shortcut, startup entry or scheduled task after an application was removed. Identify the parent path, remove the stale reference if you no longer want the program, and reinstall only from the publisher if you still need it.

Should I add examine.exe to Microsoft Defender exclusions?

Not to silence an unexplained alert. Microsoft says an exclusion stops real-time scanning of the excluded file or process and can leave the device vulnerable. Verify the file and resolve the detection instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I give a technician?

Provide every relevant copy’s full path, publisher and signature status, product and version metadata, SHA-256 hash, complete error text, Protection history details and the steps that reproduce the issue.

The Bottom Line

examine.exe is a shared filename, not proof of a Windows component or proof of malware. Identify the exact path and owner, compare the signature and provenance with the software you intended to install, calculate a hash when possible, and scan with Microsoft Defender. Repair or reinstall only the identified legitimate application; quarantine unwanted copies and use Offline scan for persistent detections. Never suppress an unexplained alert with a Defender exclusion or an untrusted replacement download.
