ergfsdcsv.exe is not identified in authoritative Microsoft or vendor documentation as a normal Windows component. A 2020 ForoSpyware diagnostic report recorded a 50,062-byte file with that name in C:UsersoscaanzcAppDataRoamingergfsdcsv.exe, with no publisher shown, alongside another randomly named executable. That location and naming pattern deserve investigation, but they do not prove that every file named ergfsdcsv.exe is malware.

Do not open, delete, or replace the file on the basis of its name alone. Verify its complete path, digital signature, hash, launch mechanism, and scan results first. The procedure below shows how to do that safely, how to remove the file when security tools identify it, and what to do when a legitimate application is responsible for the error.

What ergfsdcsv.exe is—and what is not known

An EXE file is a Windows program, but its filename is only a label. Windows does not assign meaning to an unfamiliar string such as ergfsdcsv.exe, and the researched Microsoft and vendor material contains no authoritative identity, product association, publisher, command line, or documented Windows role for this exact name.

The only exact-name result identified in the available evidence was a 2020 ForoSpyware diagnostic report. It listed:

  • Path: C:UsersoscaanzcAppDataRoamingergfsdcsv.exe
  • Size: 50,062 bytes
  • Publisher: none shown in the report
  • Context: another similarly random filename appeared in the same user profile

A per-user AppDataRoaming folder is writable by applications and is not, by itself, proof of malicious activity. It is also not the normal location readers expect for core Windows binaries. The report is historical and tied to one computer; it cannot establish a malware family or classify every file with this name.

Is ergfsdcsv.exe safe?

There is not enough evidence to answer “safe” or “virus” from the filename alone. Treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until the file itself has been checked. Microsoft explains that Authenticode signatures and the reputation of trusted certificate authorities contribute to SmartScreen decisions, but a signature is useful only when it belongs to software you intentionally installed and the file has not been altered.

Finding on your PC What it means What to do next
File is in a known program’s installation directory and has a valid signer matching that program Could be legitimate, although the unusual name still warrants confirmation Identify the owning application; repair, update, or uninstall it through its official installer
File is in a user-writable folder such as AppDataRoaming, has no signer, and starts without an intentional installation Suspicious context, not a conclusive malware verdict Record the path and hash, scan it, and inspect persistence before removal
Microsoft Defender or another reputable scanner detects it The scanner has classified the file or its behavior; the exact detection name matters Quarantine it and complete a full scan; keep the detection record
File is signed but the signer is unrelated to software you installed A valid certificate does not make an unexpected program trustworthy Check the certificate chain, file path, parent process, and hash before allowing it
Only a pop-up mentions the name, but no file can be found Could be a stale startup entry, a failed task, or a notification generated by another program Capture the exact message and inspect startup locations and Task Scheduler

Why Windows may show an ergfsdcsv.exe error

Because no specific Windows error code or documented owner has been established for this filename, the message can have several causes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A suspicious executable is being launched at sign-in, from a scheduled task, or by another process.
  • A security product removed or quarantined the file while a startup entry still points to it.
  • An application that once created the file was partially uninstalled, leaving a broken shortcut or task.
  • The file is damaged, incomplete, or incompatible with the application that calls it.
  • The name is being displayed by a misleading notification, while the actual cause is a different program.

Do not assume that deleting the executable will repair Windows. Removing a file without first recording its launch path can leave the error recurring, and deleting a legitimate application’s component can create a new failure.

Before you investigate

  1. Do not execute the file. If it is in Downloads, an email attachment, a temporary directory, or a browser cache, leave it closed. Do not double-click it “just to see what happens.”
  2. Disconnect only if you see active suspicious behavior. Unexpected network traffic, repeated credential prompts, or rapid file changes justify disconnecting Wi-Fi or Ethernet while you preserve evidence. Otherwise, keep the computer online so Defender can update and scan.
  3. Save the exact message. Copy the wording, note when it appears, and record whether it occurs at startup, sign-in, shutdown, or when a particular application opens.
  4. Use an administrator account for later cleanup. Some scheduled tasks, services, and registry entries cannot be changed from a standard account.

Step 1: Locate the actual file

If the process is running, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes or Details tab, look for ergfsdcsv.exe. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Write down the complete path before closing anything.

If the process is not running, search File Explorer for the exact filename. Turn on View → Show → Hidden items when available in your Windows edition, and search the drives where the message was observed. Do not broaden the search to similar names until you have recorded exact matches.

For each copy, record:

  • Full path, including the drive letter
  • File size and modified date
  • Creation date, if shown
  • Whether the file reappears after a restart
  • The parent process shown in Task Manager, if available

A path under C:WindowsSystem32 is not automatically safe, and a path under a user profile is not automatically malicious. Location is a comparison point, not a verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Inspect the publisher and digital signature

  1. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  2. On General, confirm the path and size. If Windows shows an Unblock option, note that the file may have come from another computer or the internet; do not enable it.
  3. Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists. Select each signature and choose Details.
  4. Check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid, identify the signer, and open the certificate details to review the certification path and validity dates.
  5. Record the Original filename and product information on the Details tab when present.

A missing signature, an invalid signature, or a signer you do not recognize raises concern. A valid signature still needs to match software you deliberately installed; certificates can be issued to many legitimate companies and do not explain why an unexpected file is on your computer.

Step 3: Calculate a SHA-256 hash

A cryptographic hash lets you compare the exact bytes of the file with a trusted incident-response or support source. It is not a diagnosis by itself, and no authoritative hash for this filename has been established.

In PowerShell, quote the complete path so spaces are handled correctly:

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathergfsdcsv.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

Alternatively, open Command Prompt and run:

certutil -hashfile "C:fullpathergfsdcsv.exe" SHA256

Copy the resulting 64-character value into your notes. Do not upload the file to an unknown website merely to obtain a verdict. If you use a multi-engine scanner approved by your organization, review its privacy terms and submit only when you are authorized to disclose the file.

Step 4: Scan with updated Windows security tools

Microsoft recommends Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Safety Scanner, including a full scan when malware is suspected. Use current signatures before scanning.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection and choose Protection updates → Check for updates.
  3. Return to Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
  4. Choose Custom scan and select the containing folder or drive. Then run a Full scan so other persistence locations are checked.
  5. Open Protection history and record the detection name, action taken, file path, and date.

If the computer repeatedly restarts, Defender cannot complete a scan, or you suspect an active infection, use Microsoft Safety Scanner obtained from Microsoft’s official channel and follow its current instructions. A detection name is evidence about that particular file or behavior; it is not proof that every file with the same filename has the same classification.

Step 5: Find what launches it

Startup apps

In Task Manager, open Startup apps. Disable an entry only after recording its name, publisher, command, and impact. Disabling a startup item prevents automatic launch but does not remove the file or scheduled task.

Task Scheduler

  1. Press Start and search for Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler Library and inspect tasks whose triggers are At log on, At startup, or recurring intervals.
  3. On the Actions tab, look for an action that points to ergfsdcsv.exe or its containing folder.
  4. Record the task name, author, trigger, and action. If the task is clearly unwanted, choose Disable first. Delete it only after preserving the details and confirming that no legitimate program depends on it.

Run registry keys

Use Registry Editor only if you are comfortable restoring a key. Before changing anything, select the relevant key and choose File → Export to create a backup. Check these common per-user and machine-wide locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce

Look for a value whose command contains the exact path. Do not remove an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar; verify the executable path and owner first. A broken entry may produce a “file not found” message after the file has already been quarantined.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 6: Choose the correct remedy

If Defender identifies the file as malware or an unwanted application

  1. In Protection history, choose the item and select Quarantine or Remove, according to the available action.
  2. Do not choose Allow on device unless you have independently verified the file and understand why it is needed.
  3. Restart Windows and run another full scan.
  4. Recheck Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and the Run keys. Remove or disable the persistence entry only after recording it.
  5. Change important passwords from a separate, trusted device if you observed credential prompts or other account-risk indicators.

Keep the detection name, hash, path, and timeline if the computer belongs to an employer, school, or managed network. An administrator may need those details for incident response.

If a known application owns the file

Use the application’s own Repair, Update, or Uninstall option from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, or from the application’s official installer. Do not download a replacement ergfsdcsv.exe from an unofficial DLL or EXE site. If repair restores the file, rescan it and confirm that its signer and path match the installed application.

If no owner can be established

Leave the file isolated rather than running it. If it is not active, copy it to a protected evidence location only when your security policy permits; otherwise, let Defender quarantine it. For a work or school computer, contact the administrator. For a personal computer with unresolved persistence or account concerns, seek a qualified incident-response or technical-support service and provide the path, hash, signature details, scan result, and launch mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: Deal with the recurring error after removal

A recurring pop-up after quarantine usually means a reference remains. Recheck the exact command in Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and the Run keys. Also inspect shortcuts for the application that displays the message: right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and review the Target field for a path to the missing executable.

If Windows reports that a DLL or application cannot start, identify the program named in the dialog before installing anything. Reinstall that program from its official source, apply Windows updates, and restart. Do not replace a missing system file with a similarly named download. If the error began immediately after a known software installation or update, use that application’s documented rollback or repair option.

How to compare competing explanations

When the evidence is ambiguous, compare the possibilities using the same six questions:

Question Legitimate application file Leftover entry Malicious or unwanted file
Where is it? Usually within the owning application’s documented folder May remain in an old profile or application folder after uninstall Often uses a writable or concealed location, although location alone proves nothing
Who signed it? Signer matches the installed publisher and the signature is valid May still be valid but tied to software no longer installed May be unsigned, invalid, or signed by an unexpected publisher
What is the hash? Matches the application’s trusted release or support record Matches an old component or cannot be corroborated Matches a security detection or differs from the expected release
What starts it? Documented service, shortcut, or application action Broken startup task or registry value points to a missing file Hidden or unexplained scheduled task, startup value, or parent process
What does it do? Behavior is consistent with the installed program Usually fails because its owner is gone Security tools or observed behavior indicate unwanted activity
Was it intentional? You can name the installer and reason for installation You recognize software that was removed or upgraded No one can explain why it exists

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not declare the file a virus solely because the name looks random.
  • Do not declare it safe solely because it has a familiar-looking icon or a digital signature.
  • Do not run it to test whether the error disappears.
  • Do not delete registry values or scheduled tasks before recording their commands and exporting a backup when appropriate.
  • Do not use a download site to obtain a replacement executable.
  • Do not restore a quarantined file unless you have verified its owner, signature, hash, and purpose.
  • Do not confuse a general malware-removal article with an identification of this exact filename; no specific malware family has been established here.

When professional help is warranted

Escalate promptly if the file returns after quarantine, launches from several accounts, disables security tools, changes browser or account settings, or is accompanied by unexplained network activity or encrypted files. Preserve the timeline and hashes, disconnect affected systems from shared networks when appropriate, and use a trusted support or incident-response channel. On an employer-managed computer, follow the organization’s reporting procedure instead of attempting a full cleanup yourself.

It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
