Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →eppshellreg.exe is normally an EditPlus component, not a standard Windows system file. EditPlus is the Windows text editor made by ES-Computing, and third-party file inventories list eppshellreg.exe beside files such as eppshell.dll, eppshell64.dll, eppie.exe, launcher.exe and the main EditPlus executable. It appears to support EditPlus shell or Windows Explorer integration.
A copy in the expected EditPlus installation folder can therefore be legitimate. The filename alone does not authenticate it, however. Check its complete path, publisher and digital signature, version context, creation date and current security-scan results before allowing it to run or creating an exclusion.

What eppshellreg.exe does
EditPlus is a Windows text editor from ES-Computing. Its official description includes built-in FTP, FTPS and SFTP capabilities, syntax highlighting, an HTML preview browser, search and replace, and related editor functions. The surrounding files reported in EditPlus inventories indicate that eppshellreg.exe is an installation and shell-registration utility rather than an independent Windows feature.
“Shell registration” generally refers to registering an application’s integration with Windows Explorer or context menus. That explains why the file may be present even when you are not actively editing a document: EditPlus can add or maintain an Explorer action, while the executable itself does not need to run continuously. The available information does not establish that it is a Windows core executable, that it must always be running, or that every release uses an identical file.

There is no single published hash, file size or certificate that applies to every EditPlus release and to both 32-bit and 64-bit builds. Use the copy installed on your computer, not a filename-only database, as the object of your investigation.
Is eppshellreg.exe safe?
The answer is conditional. A file is likely legitimate when all of the following are true:
- Its path is inside the EditPlus installation directory, commonly under a vendor-selected folder in
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86). - It appears beside the other EditPlus files, such as
editplus.exe,eppshell.dlloreppshell64.dll. - Its Properties dialog identifies the expected ES-Computing publisher and shows a valid digital signature, when that build provides one.
- The version and file date make sense for an EditPlus installation or update you recognize.
- An up-to-date security scan does not find a threat.
It needs investigation if it is in a temporary directory, a random download folder, a user-profile location unrelated to EditPlus, or an unrelated system directory. An invalid or unexpected signature, a creation date that predates any EditPlus installation, repeated recreation after deletion, or a security detection also changes the risk assessment.

Do not create an antivirus exclusion simply because an alert is inconvenient. Malwarebytes advises allow-listing a file only when you are absolutely certain it is harmless. Microsoft recommends current antivirus protection, full scans and removal of unwanted software; an Offline scan is appropriate when suspicious software persists.
Quick safety decision table
| What you find | How to interpret it | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| EditPlus folder, expected publisher, clean scan | Consistent with a legitimate EditPlus component | Keep EditPlus and repair or reinstall it if the file is damaged |
| EditPlus folder but no signature or an unexpected signer | Not authenticated; the build or file may be altered | Scan it and verify the installer source before restoring or allowing it |
| Temporary, download or unrelated system folder | Suspicious location for an EditPlus shell utility | Quarantine or leave it blocked while you investigate and scan |
| Security software detection | Could be malware, a potentially unwanted application or a false positive | Keep it quarantined until path, signature and scan evidence support a decision |
| File absent but EditPlus is installed | Often a partial uninstall, moved folder or damaged installation | Repair by reinstalling the matching EditPlus build |
Why eppshellreg.exe errors appear
Most ordinary errors are installation or integration problems rather than proof of an infection. Typical causes include:
- Partial uninstall: EditPlus was removed incompletely, leaving a shortcut, Explorer registration or startup reference that still points to the executable.
- Moved or renamed program folder: Copying an EditPlus directory to another drive breaks references that contain the original path.
- Damaged installation: A failed update, disk error or security-software quarantine removed the executable or one of its companion DLLs.
- Architecture mismatch: A 32-bit and 64-bit component set was mixed, or a DLL belongs to a different EditPlus build.
- Permission changes: Access-control changes prevent shell registration from writing where it needs to write.
- Unwanted software using the name: A similarly named file outside the EditPlus directory may be unrelated and should be treated as suspicious.
- Explorer integration: A context-menu action or shell registration is being invoked repeatedly, making the file appear to launch unexpectedly.
Check the exact file before changing anything
Do not delete a file based only on a pop-up or process name. First establish which copy Windows is referring to.

- Open the location. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. If an alert or error dialog provides a path, copy that complete path. If the process is not running, search for
eppshellreg.exein File Explorer and note every copy. - Compare the neighboring files. A legitimate copy should normally be near the EditPlus executable and related files such as
eppshell.dlloreppshell64.dll. A lone copy in a temporary or download folder deserves extra scrutiny. - Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. Check the product name, file description, version and signer. A missing signature is not conclusive by itself, but an invalid signature or an unexpected publisher is a warning.
- Record timing. Compare the file’s creation or modification date with the date you installed or updated EditPlus. A date that has no connection to the program is a reason to investigate further, not a standalone proof of malware.
- Do not run an unknown copy manually. Avoid double-clicking a suspicious file to “test” it. Preserve the path and Properties information for your security scan or support request.
Scan eppshellreg.exe with Windows security tools
Scan before restoring a quarantined file, adding an exclusion or downloading a replacement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Update protection and run a full scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, then select Protection updates and check for updates to the security intelligence.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start the scan.
- Review the result and the detected file path. A detection in the EditPlus folder and a detection in an unrelated folder should not be treated as the same case.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the problem persists
If a suspicious copy returns after removal, launches again outside the installation folder or cannot be cleaned while Windows is running, save your work and use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can prevent persistent software from hiding or relaunching.
Handle a quarantine or false-positive alert carefully
Leave the file quarantined while you verify its path, signature and parent installation. A potentially unwanted application classification is not identical to proof of malware; ESET describes such applications as grayware that can be misleading or bundled with other software. Even so, do not restore the file merely because EditPlus is familiar. Restore it only after the evidence supports a false positive and the installer source is trusted.

Fix “eppshellreg.exe not found” or a missing DLL error
This message commonly follows a partial uninstall, a moved EditPlus folder or a damaged installation.
- Confirm whether EditPlus is still listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- If you intentionally use EditPlus, close the editor and any Explorer windows that are using its context-menu integration.
- Use the EditPlus uninstaller from Windows Settings or the program’s own uninstaller. Do not remove individual DLLs or registry entries by hand while the installation is still registered.
- Restart Windows. This clears stale processes and allows Explorer to reload its shell registrations.
- Download the matching EditPlus build from the official ES-Computing source and install it normally. Do not obtain a loose executable or DLL from an unofficial “DLL download” site.
- Open EditPlus and test the operation that previously failed. If the error names a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL, install a consistent build rather than copying a DLL from another computer.
If you did not intend to keep EditPlus, remove it completely instead of replacing one missing file. Then scan again and check whether the message disappears after the next restart.
Fix access-denied or shell-registration failures
An access-denied message can result from changed permissions, security-software quarantine or a mismatch between the executable and its companion DLLs.
Best Value
- Verify that the file is in the genuine EditPlus directory and that its publisher and signature are acceptable.
- Review Windows Security > Protection history and any third-party security-software quarantine history. A missing file may have been isolated rather than deleted.
- Confirm that all EditPlus files came from the same installer and architecture. Do not mix files from separate releases.
- Run the official uninstaller and reinstall while signed in with an account allowed to install desktop applications. If the installer offers a per-user or all-users location, keep the chosen location consistent.
- Restart Windows and test Explorer integration again. Avoid changing broad folder permissions or disabling security protection just to force registration.
If the file remains blocked after a clean reinstall, retain the exact error text and check the Windows event information rather than repeatedly granting permissions.
Stop repeated launches or high activity
eppshellreg.exe is not documented here as a process that must run continuously. Repeated launches therefore require context.
- Use Task Manager’s Open file location command each time the process appears and confirm whether the path is unchanged.
- Check whether you are invoking an EditPlus Explorer context-menu command, opening a file association or repeatedly starting EditPlus itself.
- If the process appears only when Explorer refreshes or a context-menu action is used, repair or remove EditPlus through its installer rather than deleting the executable.
- If a copy recreates itself in a temporary, profile or random folder, disconnect the computer from sensitive networks if appropriate, keep the file blocked, update security intelligence and run a full scan followed by an Offline scan.
- After cleanup, restart Windows and verify that only the expected EditPlus installation remains.
Remove EditPlus when you do not want it
- Back up any EditPlus settings or documents you still need.
- Uninstall EditPlus from Settings > Apps or by using its own uninstaller.
- Restart Windows so Explorer can release the old shell registration.
- Check for leftover EditPlus folders and shortcuts. Remove leftovers only after confirming they are not shared with another installation or needed data.
- Run a full security scan. If the executable was found outside the normal installation directory or keeps returning, use Microsoft Defender Offline.
Do not use a generic registry cleaner or a “DLL fixer” as a substitute for uninstalling and reinstalling the parent application. Such utilities do not establish whether the file is genuine and can remove unrelated registrations.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Windows Error Reporting and Event Viewer for recurring crashes
When the file is in the expected EditPlus directory but Windows still reports crashes, verify the failure details instead of guessing.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application around the time of the crash.
- Look for an application error naming
eppshellreg.exe, a companion DLL, an exception code or a faulting module. - Compare the event time with EditPlus launches, Explorer context-menu actions and security-software events.
- Use the information to decide whether the repair is an EditPlus reinstall, a security investigation or an Explorer-integration problem.
Windows Error Reporting records application faults and can provide troubleshooting details, but an event entry by itself does not prove that the executable is malicious.
Quick Recap
Keep EditPlus or remove it: which path fits?
| Question | Keep and repair EditPlus | Remove EditPlus and scan |
|---|---|---|
| Did you intentionally install the editor? | Yes, and you still need its editing or Explorer features | No, or nobody using the computer recognizes it |
| Where is the file? | Inside the known EditPlus installation directory | Temporary, download, profile or unrelated system directory |
| What does the signature show? | Expected ES-Computing publisher or otherwise credible installer evidence | Invalid, unexpected or absent together with other warning signs |
| What is the symptom? | Missing file, missing DLL or installation error | Security detection, persistence or unexplained recreation |
| Do you need Explorer integration? | Keep it and reinstall the matching build | Uninstall and remove the integration through the documented uninstaller |
What not to do
- Do not assume every file named
eppshellreg.exeis safe because one copy belongs to EditPlus. - Do not delete a legitimate installation file before checking whether an uninstall entry or repair is available.
- Do not download a replacement executable from an unofficial DLL or software-collection site.
- Do not add an antivirus exclusion before checking the path, publisher, signature and scan results.
- Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit EditPlus components.
- Do not disable Microsoft Defender merely to make a warning disappear.
Practical checklist
- Record the complete path and every copy of the filename.
- Confirm whether EditPlus is installed and whether you recognize that installation.
- Check Properties, Details and Digital Signatures.
- Update security intelligence and run a full scan.
- Use Defender Offline when a suspicious copy persists or returns.
- For a wanted but damaged installation, uninstall, restart and reinstall the matching official build.
- For an unwanted or suspicious installation, uninstall it, rescan and monitor for recreation.
- Use Event Viewer or Windows Error Reporting details for crashes that continue after a clean reinstall.
