What Is El Niño, and How Does It Affect Weather Around the World?

El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a recurring pattern involving both the tropical Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere above it. When Pacific waters warm and trade winds weaken, tropical rain and rising air shift eastward. That change can alter winds, the jet stream, storm tracks and seasonal rainfall far from the Pacific. The effects are regional tendencies—not promises of a particular storm, rainy day or drought.

What El Niño is—and what it is not

El Niño is not simply unusually warm water in one part of the Pacific. It is a coupled ocean–atmosphere pattern: ocean temperatures change, winds respond, and the location of tropical rainfall shifts. Those atmospheric changes are part of what makes an El Niño event, and they help transmit its influence to weather patterns in other regions.

ENSO has three broad phases. El Niño is its warm phase; La Niña is its cool phase; and ENSO-neutral conditions describe periods when neither phase is present. The pattern is centered on the equatorial Pacific, especially its central and eastern areas, but its strongest impacts are not confined to the tropics.

The name has a longer history than the modern scientific definition. Peruvian fishers recognized recurring warming off tropical South America in the 1600s and called it “El Niño,” or “Little Boy,” because it often occurred around Christmas. That original usage referred to the coastal warming. Today, scientists use El Niño for the larger Pacific ocean–atmosphere pattern.

How El Niño changes the atmosphere

In ordinary conditions, easterly trade winds push warm surface water westward across the tropical Pacific. During El Niño, those winds weaken. Warm water spreads farther east, and the zone of rising air, clouds and tropical rainfall shifts with it. These are connected changes rather than independent signs: warmer water can help shift convection, while altered winds and atmospheric circulation further affect the ocean.

The resulting chain is useful for understanding why a change in the tropical Pacific can matter elsewhere:

  1. Pacific waters warm: Sea-surface temperatures rise across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.
  2. Winds and rain shift: Weaker trade winds allow warm water and tropical rainfall to extend farther east.
  3. Circulation adjusts: The location of tropical heating changes pressure and wind patterns in the atmosphere.
  4. Remote weather odds change: The atmospheric pattern can affect the Pacific jet stream, storm tracks and seasonal rainfall in distant regions.

This remote influence is often called a teleconnection. It does not mean that the same weather occurs everywhere. The response depends on the season, location and event, and local conditions still matter. An El Niño pattern can tilt the odds toward certain seasonal outcomes without determining what happens on a particular day.

How NOAA identifies and monitors an El Niño episode

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) FAQ describes an El Niño episode using a three-month mean sea-surface temperature departure greater than +0.5°C in the east-central equatorial Pacific. That threshold is one part of the identification, not a complete explanation or a stand-alone guarantee of impacts: the atmosphere also needs to respond in the characteristic coupled pattern.

NOAA says it transitioned to operational use of the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) on February 1, 2026. Traditional monitoring compares sea-surface temperatures with a historical baseline in a defined Pacific region. RONI subtracts tropical-mean sea-surface temperature departures from the traditional index. NOAA describes this adjustment as making the measure less dependent on the selected 30-year baseline and more representative of the atmospheric response expected from the Pacific pattern. This describes NOAA’s monitoring method; it should not be assumed that every climate agency uses the same operational index.

An index summarizes a large-scale ocean pattern. It is not a local forecast. NOAA cautions that index values do not necessarily correspond directly to the strength of impacts, and even a stronger event does not guarantee a particular outcome in a particular place.

Where El Niño can affect weather

NOAA notes that El Niño’s effects are most strongly felt in the tropics, while also disrupting local weather patterns around the world. The following examples describe common seasonal tendencies, not fixed outcomes for every event.

Western South America: heavier rain and flood risk

Parts of Peru, Chile and Ecuador can receive much heavier rainfall during El Niño, particularly when the event is strong. NOAA describes record rainfall in parts of these countries. Intense or prolonged rain can increase flood risk, but the pattern does not mean every location in western South America will flood, or that every El Niño brings the same rainfall.

Australia and Indonesia: greater drought risk

El Niño is often associated with drier conditions and drought risk in Australia and Indonesia. The link follows the eastward shift in tropical rainfall: areas that normally receive more of that rainfall may become drier when the rain-bearing pattern moves away. The risk is seasonal and variable, rather than a certainty for every place or year.

United States: a wintertime north–south contrast

During Northern Hemisphere winter, the southern tier of the United States tends to have wetter and cooler conditions, while the northern tier toward the Great Lakes tends to be warmer and drier. A shifted Pacific jet stream helps explain this broad pattern by influencing the routes and frequency of storms. The dividing line is not a precise boundary, and the tendency does not replace local forecasts.

Tropical cyclones: effects differ by ocean basin

El Niño can shift the odds of tropical cyclone activity in opposite directions in different basins. NOAA reports a 60% reduction in North Atlantic hurricane days during moderate to strong El Niño years. It also describes fewer North Atlantic cyclone numbers and lower overall system intensity in those years. In contrast, activity can be favored in the central and eastern Pacific.

These are basin-specific tendencies, not a guarantee that the Atlantic will be quiet or that the Pacific will be active. Exceptions occur, and the seasonal ENSO pattern does not determine whether a particular storm will form or where it will go.

Marine ecosystems off northern South America

Warmer ocean temperatures and altered currents can shift the distribution and abundance of fish and other marine species off northern South America. This is an ocean impact rather than a direct weather forecast, but it is part of the broader consequences of changing Pacific conditions.

El Niño and La Niña compared

La Niña is generally opposite to El Niño in its tropical Pacific oceanic and atmospheric characteristics. The contrast is useful, but it should not be treated as a perfect reversal of every regional impact. Each episode’s strength, timing and regional effects vary.

Feature El Niño La Niña ENSO-neutral
Equatorial Pacific temperatures Central and eastern Pacific surface waters are warmer than usual. Central and eastern Pacific surface waters are cooler than usual. Neither warm nor cool phase is present.
Trade winds Typically weaker than usual. Generally show the opposite ocean–atmosphere tendency to El Niño. No El Niño or La Niña phase is present.
Tropical rainfall Shifts farther east across the Pacific. Generally shifts in the opposite direction to El Niño. No defined El Niño or La Niña rainfall shift.
Seasonal circulation Can alter circulation, jet-stream patterns and regional seasonal odds. Can produce a generally opposite broad pattern, with impacts that still vary. Neither phase’s characteristic circulation pattern is present.

The comparison describes the broad Pacific pattern. It cannot by itself tell a reader whether a specific town will have a wet winter, a dry summer or a particular storm.

How often El Niño happens and how long it lasts

NOAA describes El Niño episodes as typically recurring every 2–7 years and lasting about 9–12 months. These figures are historical typical ranges, not a fixed schedule or a minimum and maximum that every event must follow. Strength and duration vary, and the regional weather signature can differ from one episode to another.

El Niño and La Niña are recurring natural climate variability, not synonyms for long-term global warming. NOAA also studies how ENSO dynamics and impacts may change over coming decades; that separate question does not make an individual El Niño event equivalent to global warming.

What the October 2026 outlook can—and cannot—tell you

NOAA CPC’s October 2026 RONI outlook shows positive forecast distributions for the overlapping SON 2026 through DJF 2026–27 seasons. Those season abbreviations refer to September–October–November 2026 and December 2026–January–February 2027. CPC says the outlook is assembled by a team using multiple models and observations and is updated monthly.

A positive forecast distribution is context about the likelihood of the large-scale ENSO pattern, not a promise of local impacts. CPC cautions that the index does not necessarily translate directly into impact strength. Because seasonal outlooks change as observations and forecasts are updated, check the latest CPC outlook for current ENSO probabilities and consult the relevant national or local weather service for regional seasonal probabilities.

Seasonal climate outlooks and short-range weather forecasts answer different questions. An ENSO outlook estimates the odds of a large-scale climate state over a season; a weather forecast addresses expected conditions over shorter periods and at a more local scale. Use the latter to make decisions about an approaching storm or day-to-day conditions.

How to interpret an El Niño forecast for your location

  1. Check the date and season. ENSO status and outlooks are updated, so make sure the forecast applies to the months you care about.
  2. Look for a regional outlook. A Pacific index alone cannot tell you what the seasonal odds are where you live. Use the outlook issued for your country or region.
  3. Read probability language literally. “Tends to be wetter” or “increased drought risk” describes shifted odds, not a guaranteed outcome.
  4. Use short-range forecasts for immediate decisions. Seasonal ENSO patterns are not substitutes for local forecasts, warnings and observations about specific storms or hazards.

This distinction matters because the same El Niño can contribute to different outcomes in different regions, and local weather is shaped by more than ENSO alone. A seasonal tendency is useful for preparedness and planning, but it cannot say whether a particular household will experience flooding, drought or an ordinary season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during El Niño or La Niña?

During El Niño, central and eastern equatorial Pacific waters warm, trade winds weaken, and tropical rainfall shifts eastward. La Niña is generally the opposite pattern, with cooler central and eastern Pacific waters and opposite broad tendencies in winds and rainfall. In either phase, the connected ocean and atmosphere can influence circulation and seasonal weather odds.

How often do El Niño and La Niña occur, and how long do they last?

NOAA says El Niño episodes typically recur every 2–7 years and last about 9–12 months. These are historical typical ranges, not a regular calendar or a guarantee that every event will have the same length. Strength, duration and regional effects vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an El Niño forecast mean my area will be wetter or drier?

No. ENSO can shift seasonal probabilities, but it does not predict a particular local day or guarantee a specific outcome. Check a regional seasonal outlook for probabilities where you live, and use short-range local forecasts and warnings for immediate weather decisions.

What does NOAA’s +0.5°C El Niño threshold mean?

NOAA CPC’s FAQ describes the threshold as a three-month mean sea-surface temperature departure greater than +0.5°C in the east-central equatorial Pacific. The atmosphere must also respond for the coupled phenomenon to be present. NOAA transitioned to operational RONI monitoring on February 1, 2026, so the temperature threshold alone is not a complete current diagnostic.

How can El Niño affect hurricanes?

NOAA reports that moderate to strong El Niño years have 60% fewer North Atlantic hurricane days, along with fewer North Atlantic cyclone numbers and lower overall system intensity. Activity can be favored in the central and eastern Pacific. These are basin-specific tendencies with exceptions, not a forecast for an individual storm.

The Bottom Line

El Niño is a coupled Pacific ocean–atmosphere pattern that shifts tropical rainfall and can alter seasonal weather odds far away. Its effects differ by region and event, so use seasonal outlooks for broad planning and local forecasts for specific weather decisions.
