El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO): a coupled ocean-and-atmosphere pattern in which sea-surface temperatures become unusually warm in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific, trade winds weaken, and tropical rainfall shifts eastward. The resulting changes in pressure, winds and jet streams alter the odds of rain, drought, storms and temperature extremes around the Pacific and far beyond it. El Niño changes seasonal probabilities; it does not guarantee a particular storm or a particular city’s weather.
What is El Niño?
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center defines El Niño as “the large-scale ocean-atmosphere climate phenomenon linked to a periodic warming in sea-surface temperatures across the central and east-central equatorial Pacific (between approximately the date line and 120°W).” The phrase ocean-atmosphere is essential: El Niño is not simply a patch of warm water. Ocean temperatures, trade winds, rainfall, surface pressure and large-scale circulation reinforce one another.

Operationally, NOAA watches the Niño-3.4 region, a belt from 5°N to 5°S and 170°W to 120°W. Onset is identified when the three-month-average sea-surface-temperature departure there exceeds +0.5°C, together with an atmospheric response. NOAA’s broader description looks for monthly Niño-3.4 temperatures at least 0.5°C above normal for five consecutive overlapping three-month periods while the atmosphere shows weaker trades and rainfall shifted toward the central and eastern Pacific.

El Niño is one of ENSO’s three states. La Niña is the cool phase, with unusually cool east-central equatorial Pacific waters and generally opposite wind and rainfall patterns. Neutral conditions mean neither phase is established. Neither El Niño nor La Niña follows a perfectly regular calendar.

Why a warm equatorial Pacific changes weather
In a typical year, easterly trade winds blow along the equator. They push warm surface water toward the western Pacific, where heat and moisture accumulate near Indonesia and northern Australia. In the east, winds help draw colder, nutrient-rich water up from below through upwelling. Rising warm, moist air over the western Pacific helps drive the Walker circulation, a broad east-west overturning pattern in the tropical atmosphere.
During El Niño, the trades weaken. Warm surface water sloshes eastward, and the thermocline—the boundary separating warm surface water from colder deep water—becomes deeper than average in the central and eastern Pacific. The location of strongest evaporation, rising air and tropical thunderstorms moves east as well. More convection and rain occur over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, while Indonesia, the western equatorial Pacific and northern Australia become more likely to experience suppressed rainfall.
| Feature | Typical neutral pattern | El Niño pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Trade winds | Easterly trades push warm water westward | Trades weaken, allowing warm water to move east |
| Sea-surface temperatures | Warmer west; cooler eastern upwelling zone | Warmer central and east-central equatorial Pacific |
| Thermocline | Relatively shallow in the east | Typically deeper in the central and eastern Pacific |
| Tropical convection | Concentrated mainly over the western Pacific | Shifts toward the central and eastern Pacific |
| Rainfall tendency | Wet Indonesia and western Pacific; drier east | Wetter central/eastern Pacific; drier Indonesia and western Pacific |
| Walker circulation | Stronger east-west overturning | Weakens as the rising branch moves east |
For a typical El Niño, NOAA describes east-central Pacific surface temperatures about 1.5–2.5°C above average and subsurface temperatures near the thermocline about 3–6°C above average. Those figures describe common event conditions, not a minimum threshold that every El Niño must reach.
How often does El Niño occur, and how long does it last?
Episodes typically recur every three to five years, although historical gaps have ranged from two to seven years. An event commonly lasts nine to twelve months. Development often begins during March–June, the event tends to peak from December through April, and it usually weakens during May–July. Long or unusually strong events can depart from that sequence, so the calendar is a guide rather than a rule.

Scientists track an event through overlapping three-month averages rather than a single daily reading. That smoothing prevents a brief warm spell or a single storm from being mistaken for a basin-wide ENSO phase. The atmosphere must also respond: persistent changes in winds, pressure and tropical rainfall help distinguish El Niño from an isolated marine heat wave.
How El Niño affects weather around the Pacific
The eastward shift of tropical heat and thunderstorms changes upper-level winds and the location of storm tracks. These are seasonal tendencies. They raise or lower the odds of certain outcomes but cannot determine the weather of every day, storm or town.
Central and eastern equatorial Pacific
More frequent or intense tropical convection develops over warmer central and eastern waters. Rainfall increases in areas that are normally relatively dry, while the eastern Pacific warm pool expands. The associated pressure changes can further weaken the trade winds, reinforcing the event.

As rising air and thunderstorms shift east, sinking air becomes more prevalent over Indonesia, the western equatorial Pacific and northern Australia. El Niño therefore tends to bring drier conditions there, increasing the likelihood of drought, heat and wildfire-favorable weather. A seasonal tendency is not a guarantee: local rainfall also depends on monsoons, shorter-lived weather systems and other climate patterns.

Peru, Ecuador and coastal South America
Enhanced tropical convection and altered circulation can produce unusually heavy rain along parts of Peru, Ecuador and Chile. NOAA notes that El Niño has been associated with record rainfall in these countries. Flooding, landslides and debris flows are possible where intense rain falls on steep or saturated terrain, but the exact location and severity vary by event.
California and the Pacific Northwest
NOAA describes an eastward dip, or trough, in the Eastern Pacific jet stream during El Niño. The jet can steer tropical moisture and storms toward California and farther south than usual. In a very strong event, the average storm track can reach Southern California. California consequently has a higher seasonal chance of above-normal rain and episodes of flash flooding or debris flows, while the Pacific Northwest tends to be drier. A wet El Niño winter does not mean every California storm will be extreme, nor that every part of the state will be wet.
United States in Northern Hemisphere winter
| Region | Typical El Niño winter tendency | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Southern United States, from central California to Florida and up the East Coast | Wetter and cooler than average | Higher odds of a cool, wet season; individual storms remain unpredictable |
| Northern tier through the Great Lakes | Warmer and drier than average | Lower seasonal precipitation odds and a warmer average tendency |
| Pacific Northwest | Drier than average | Storm tracks are more often displaced southward |
These broad zones are not sharp borders. Elevation, coastlines, snow cover, local topography and other atmospheric patterns can override the typical signal in a particular week.

A strong El Niño can increase hurricane activity in the central and eastern Pacific while suppressing Atlantic hurricane formation. The mechanism is linked to changes in tropical heating and vertical wind shear. The direction and size of the effect depend on the season, the event’s strength and the basin; an El Niño signal does not provide a storm count for a specific year.

What NOAA’s 8 October 2026 update says
ENSO status is time-sensitive. In its diagnostic discussion issued 8 October 2026, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said El Niño was continuing to strengthen and judged a strong-to-very-strong event likely through January–March 2027, with the probability remaining above 83%. The discussion is a dated forecast, not a permanent description of ENSO; CPC scheduled the next diagnostic for 12 November 2026.
| Measure in the 8 October 2026 discussion | Reported value |
|---|---|
| Niño-3.4 sea-surface-temperature anomaly | +2.1°C |
| Niño-3 anomaly | +3.0°C |
| Niño-1+2 anomaly | +3.9°C |
| Parts of the eastern equatorial Pacific | Anomalies above +4.0°C |
| Chance of a historic-strength event, September–November | 54% |
| Chance of a historic-strength event, October–December | 83% |
| Chance of a historic-strength event, November–January | 70% |
In that advisory, “historic” meant a three-month Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) value of at least +2.5°C. The percentages describe the forecast windows and definition used in that specific discussion; they are not probabilities that every location will experience a particular impact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How El Niño is monitored and forecast
NOAA combines several observing systems: satellites, moored and drifting buoys, sea-level analyses, expendable buoys and computer models. Together they measure surface and subsurface temperature, winds, pressure, currents and rainfall. Subsurface observations matter because warm water stored below the surface can move east and later emerge, providing an early clue to the evolution of an event.
On 1 February 2026, NOAA moved to operational use of the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI). RONI adjusts the traditional Oceanic Niño Index by accounting for tropical-mean sea-surface-temperature departures. The adjustment makes the index less dependent on whichever 30-year baseline is selected. When reading a bulletin, check whether a value is an SST anomaly, an ONI value or a RONI value; they are related measures but not interchangeable numbers.

How to read an ENSO outlook
- Check the issue date. ENSO forecasts evolve as new observations arrive.
- Identify the index and region. Niño-3.4, Niño-3 and Niño-1+2 describe different parts of the equatorial Pacific.
- Look for the time window. A probability for October–December is not a forecast for a single October storm.
- Separate event probability from impact probability. A high chance of El Niño does not assign the same risk to every country or season.
- Use local outlooks for decisions. Water managers, emergency agencies and farmers should combine ENSO information with their national and regional forecasts.
El Niño and La Niña compared
| Comparison point | El Niño | La Niña |
|---|---|---|
| Sea-surface-temperature anomaly | Warm anomaly in the central/east-central equatorial Pacific | Cool anomaly in the central/east-central equatorial Pacific |
| Trade winds | Generally weaker easterly trades | Generally stronger easterly trades |
| Rainfall and convection | More central/eastern Pacific rain; less over Indonesia and the western Pacific | More Indonesian/western Pacific rain; less over the eastern Pacific |
| Walker circulation | Weakens | Generally strengthens |
| Typical United States winter signal | Wetter/cooler south; warmer/drier northern tier | Often broadly opposite, though local outcomes vary |
| Forecast meaning | Shifts seasonal odds; does not dictate a local storm | Also shifts odds; does not dictate a local storm |
Common mistakes when interpreting El Niño
- Calling it only warm water: without the wind, pressure and rainfall response, the definition is incomplete.
- Treating +0.5°C as a universal intensity label: it is an operational onset criterion for a specified region and averaging period, not a promise of a strong event.
- Assuming every El Niño produces the same map: season, strength, location and interactions with other patterns alter the effects.
- Turning a seasonal tendency into a daily forecast: a wetter winter can still contain dry weeks, and a drier region can still experience a major storm.
- Using an old bulletin as current: consult the latest NOAA CPC diagnostic because probabilities and event strength can change.
What El Niño means for practical planning
Use El Niño as a background risk signal. A water utility in a region with a typical dry tendency may review drought and reservoir scenarios; a flood-prone community in a region with a wetter tendency may check drainage, debris-flow and emergency plans. Farmers can incorporate the seasonal outlook into crop, irrigation and planting decisions, while households should rely on official short-range warnings for actual storms, heat, flooding or wildfire weather.
The key decision rule is simple: first establish the current ENSO phase and forecast confidence, then translate the broad regional tendency into a local seasonal outlook, and finally use short-range weather forecasts for immediate action.
Bottom line
El Niño is a recurring, coupled Pacific climate pattern in which central and east-central equatorial Pacific waters warm, trade winds weaken and tropical rainfall moves east. That displaced heat reorganizes jet streams and storm tracks, making some regions wetter and others drier, but only as a probability shift. NOAA’s 8 October 2026 assessment described a strengthening event likely to remain strong to very strong through January–March 2027; the next advisory can revise that assessment.
